Aspara Pacific Ltd are the top asparagus breeders in the Southern Hemisphere. They are a family business, based locally in Rolleston. Established in 1990, by Dr Peter and Linda Falloon, Aspara Pacific Ltd has been breeding New Zealand's own asparagus varieties. The core focus has been on improving spear quality and yields to allow growers to be market leaders. During this time they have grown high health asparagus crowns for everyone, from the home gardener, to the biggest commercial growers in the country. their varieties have been independently trialed and tested around the country. This, combined with our years of growing experience ensures you only receive the best quality plants. Dr Peter Falloon was an extraordinary man and the brains and founder of Aspara Pacific. With over forty years of experience working with asparagus he was a leader and widely respected in his field. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with first class honours in Agronomy and Plant Physiology. Prior to founding Aspara Pacific, he spent ten years with the NZ Department of Scientific and Industrial research as an asparagus breeder. During this time, he studied for his PhD

at the University of California, Davis; working on the asparagus diseases Phytophthora rot, Purple Spot and Stemphylium Leaf Spot. Peter's research has resulted in over 100 scientific publications. His passion for breeding asparagus of the highest quality is evident in the premium nature of our varieties. Sadly, Peter passed away in 2021. His amazing wife Linda, who also has forty years of experience in Asparagus, and his son Matthew will continue Pete’s legacy. Linda Falloon runs the plant tissue culture laboratory, which is the key to their success in producing virus free seed. With over thirty years of experience in this field, Linda's skills in micropropagation of asparagus means Aspara Pacific Ltd have been able to fast track high health crown nurseries. Matthew Falloon having returned from Europe, took a career change to join Aspara Pacific Ltd in 2016. His attention to detail and staff management expertise

are ideal skills for running the high health asparagus nursery and quarantine greenhouses. “We are immensely proud of what dad achieved. He did extraordinary things to develop the New Zealand asparagus industry, and it is a great honor to continue his work on. It is important to our family that we keep our business local. There was an option to sell the breeding to overseas companies but that would have been at the detriment of New Zealand growers. Our focus is to keep it local and that way we continue to provide our community with great plant stock and beautiful fresh asparagus in the spring,” commented Matthew proudly. Production of high health asparagus crowns is an exacting business with Aspara Pacific being the lead producer of high health asparagus crowns in New Zealand.
