Born and raised in West Melton, Sam Dickson (32 years old), will be captaining the New Zealand Men’s Sevens team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 28th to August 8th, with the Sevens competition beginning on July 29th. Sam attended St Thomas of Canterbury College and played for West Melton Rugby Club in his younger years. He played AFL (Australian Football League) for New Zealand in 2010 and 2011 and has been in the All Black Sevens since 2012. He has played in sixty World Series Tournaments, one World Cup and Olympics, and this is about to be his third Commonwealth Games. “It's a privilege to be named as captain of the team. It was never a goal, but I couldn't turn down the opportunity. Especially to captain the team at a Commonwealth Games where we have had such a rich history,” commented Sam proudly. “After the disappointment of getting injured right before the Tokyo Olympics, it’s great to be back for the Commonwealth

On Thursday, July 7th, the Malvern Schools Speech and Poetry Competition was held in Darfield. The Year 5-6 speeches were held at Darfield High School, and the Year 1-4 speeches were held at Darfield Primary School. The Competition was unable to be held last year due to Covid concerns, so all schools were really pleased that it could be held this year. There were a wide range of speech topics from ‘What really happened to the tooth fairy?’ to ‘Becoming a teacher’. The judges of the Year 5-6 speeches were Helen and Mark from Hornby Toastmasters. Both judges commented how much they enjoyed being part of this event and how impressed they were by the quality of the speeches. They found it very hard to judge the competition because of the high calibre of the speakers. Mrs Beales judged the Year 4 speeches and the Year 1-3 poetry recital. She loved the

LOCALS IN FARAH PALMER CUP Two local girls, Lucy Jenkins and Hannah King have made the 2022 Farah Palmer Cup (FPC) Canterbury Team this season. Lucy (21 years old) plays flanker and is never far away from the action. She tackles hard and turns over lots of balls. This is Lucy’s fifth year in the team. Hannah (18 years old) plays first five and has been in the Canterbury development side for two years. This is the first time she has made the squad. Hannah's strength is her running and passing game, and is a great tackler. Both girls have great rugby brains, read the game really well and train very hard. Both Lucy and Hannah started their careers at supportive local rugby clubs. Lucy played for Kirwee until Under 11, when she moved to West Melton. Hannah played all of her junior rugby at West Melton Rugby Club. Now Lucy plays for Christchurch Football Club and has played over sixty games for them. Hannah played two seasons for Christchurch before obtaining a rugby scholarship for Lincoln University, where

she currently plays. “It is fantastic that Women’s rugby is growing in strength. The FPC season started with a game against the Canterbury development team last Saturday, at Orange Theory Stadium, and

our ﬁrst competition game is on Saturday against Wellington. Canterbury are hoping to gather back the Farah Palmer Trophy after losing in the ﬁnal to Waikato last year,” Hannah commented.

Darfield High School (DHS) Sport are currently running a Fundraising Calendar Raffle. It is difficult finding new ways to raise funds within a small community that hasn't already been done, but thanks to a suggestion from one of our school parents, Ange Holland, we now have a great new initiative. Through the generous support of some of our School Whanau we were donated vouchers and funds to go towards prizes, and also purchased vouchers from our amazing local businesses. It is great to be able to give something back to the businesses that have continually supported us over the years, and the response from them has been favourable. Through the month of August, thirty one numbers will be drawn (one each day), with the winning ticket receiving a voucher/ service to the value of at least $50 from one of our local

businesses, then every fourth day the winner will also receive a bonus gift. These funds will go towards supporting and subsidising the ever increasing costs of delivering sporting activities, paying event entrance fees and providing sports equipment for individuals and teams to use. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from students (note if purchasing from a DHS student/family - they go in the draw to win $250), the

Darfield Hotel or by emailing sport@darfield.school.nz. Daily draws will take place in the School Office at 10am each day, Saturday and Sundays draw will be completed on the Monday following. Results will be published on the Facebook page: Darfield High School Sports Page. The fantastic initiative is going to become an annual fundraiser for DHS. Pip Deans, DHS Sport Coordinator.

The new Rolleston Food Truck Market launched on June 4th with nine vendors, but it is constantly attracting more and more trucks, proving to be very popular. The Market is currently based at the Rolleston Salvation Army - Generation House, 646 Springston Rolleston Road, and is bringing vendors and the community together every Saturday from 4pm to 7pm. Daniel Morbey, Rolleston local and organiser , wants to keep a wide variety of options available over winter and is looking at expanding in the warmer months to showcase more food options, as well as adding live entertainment and activities for children. Current food options include dumplings, burgers, barbeque, crepes, candy floss, gluten-free, vegan and more. The food truck idea turned into a reality for Daniel after he gauged interest off the local community Facebook page. Daniel owns and runs his own food truck, Streetbowls, which produces gluten-free and vegan meals and is a regular sight around the region.

“I’m proud to be part of giving local people a fantastic family event, with a different variety of food options and at the same time, allowing local businesses the opportunity to trade with the Selwyn community,” commented Daniel. “A special thanks goes to Stuart Duxfield of Rolleston Salvation Army, for working with me to host the event,” Daniel concluded.

HUGE MILESTONE Over three months have now passed since Kevin Burney’s freak accident, in Darfield on April 2nd. Kevin was grinding into an empty old metal drum that had previously had isopropyl alcohol in it. Sparks from the grinder went inside the drum, causing the drum to blow up, engulfing him in flames. He suffered burns to seventy percent of his body, from his head to his thighs. Kevin spent nearly three months in Middlemore Hospital after his accident, receiving treatment for his burns. During this time, he had numerous skin graft

operations, with the final grafts being completed in the middle of June. Kevin then progressed into rehabilitation through physio, to help his new skin become more flexible and work on tight areas. He was transferred back to Christchurch Hospital on June 30th, where he has been continuing with physio to get basic movements back, which will enable him to be independent and eventually look after himself again. All going well Kevin will return home to Darfield this week, with some help at home daily.

“He is really looking forward to being able to be home again. We would like to thank anyone who gave us any form of support when we needed it the most,” commented Kevin’s son, Marcus Burney.

FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED The Darfield Young Farmers Club celebrated their first birthday as a re-established organisation at the recent July monthly meeting. Great stories from past members were heard about their time many moons ago, when the Club was an established part of the community. The Club is back to create many more memories and to make a mark in the community again. “In our first year, we have maintained a strong team and achieved some great things, including taking out the win for

the Christchurch District Quiz Shield, attending events hosted by our Tasman region, members competing in the Tasman District tournament, fundraising at the Wheels and Wings event, lending a hand to the local community and created a Club Jersey. We took inspiration from the old Club colours when creating our jersey to help keep the legacy of Darﬁeld Young Farmers alive today,” commented Chairwomen Amy Musson. “We would like to say a massive thank you to the Darﬁeld Hotel,

TOP EFFORT FROM JONNY Dunsandel Young Farmer Jonny Brown, (31 years old), represented Tasman, placing third in the 54th FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition, held in Whangārei. To be eligible to compete in the Final, each contestant had to be named their region's FMG Young Farmer of the Year, after taking out their Regional Final earlier this year. They qualiﬁed for the Regional Final by making the top eight competitors from a series of district contests, held near the end of last year. The contest started on Thursday, July 7th, with a technical day before heading into the biggest day (practical day) on Friday, where the contestants battled through pouring rain for eight

hours, completing a series of modules, and time and points races. On Friday night, the seven Grand Finalists presented their speeches to a crowd of 350, at the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year and AgriKidsNZ Awards Ceremony. Saturday morning saw some down time with their families for a volunteer morning, planting trees at Barge Showgrounds to leave their legacy in Whangārei before the big Finale. The Evening Show, saw the Finalists go head-to-head in a buzzer quiz, in front of a crowd of 650, racking up last-minute points before the winners were announced. The winner was Tim Dangen

(Northern Region, Auckland Young Farmers), second was Chris Poole (Waikato Bay of Plenty Region, Te Kawa West Young Farmers) and third was Jonny Brown, who received $5,000 cash from FMG and a $1,000 New Holland voucher.

On Saturday, July 9th, in very wintery conditions, the Canterbury Cross Country Running Championships were held at the Halswell Quarry. Talented Darfield Primary School student Lulu Maley, contested the Under 12 Girl’s Grade and came away with the win, which capped off a great season to date. She has won three from three Inter-Club Cross Country races held over the last couple of months, at different venues throughout Christchurch. “Coming first in the Canterbury Cross Country is my biggest win to date, and I also really enjoyed the wet conditions last Saturday, as it made the course more challenging,” Lulu commented. Lulu is part of the Selwyn Athletics Club, based at Rolleston, where she trains twice a week. “I really enjoy training as the coaches are great to work with, and the friends I have made and compete with are all so supportive, which makes everything so much fun to be a part of.” Lulu was also part of the Darfield Primary/Malvern Cross Country team that competed a month ago in the Inter-Schools Cross

Country Championships. She picked up a cold the week of the competition, but still came away with fourth place out of 117 other Year 6 girls. Lulu also had a great summer track season for the Selwyn Athletics Club, capped off at the Canterbury Championships held at Nga Puna Wai back in March. She ﬁnished third in High Jump, second in the 800m and won the 1500m for her age group. Lulu is now part of the Te Rōpū Oma o Waitaha Runners for the Canterbury Team, which will compete at the end of September in Nelson for the Regional Championships. “It is so much fun to be part of such a fun team,” Lulu concluded.

Applicants must have an interest in indigenous biodiversity and ecology and in working both in the field and with the community to support conservation outcomes.
