On Saturday, May 21st, the annual 250km Scooter Safari took place, with approximately 250 riders making their way from Christchurch to Hokitika.

This year, riders saw snow and the wind was brutal at times, but those who took part dug deep to honour their own experiences of surviving cancer, or as a tribute to loved ones lost to cancer. This event is a huge fundraiser for the Cancer Society, and the event last weekend raised in excess of $350,000.

Local rider Nicola Garlick commented, “We all have a tough moment on as we think about the loss of our loved ones, while dealing with the elements.

very cold rain. Arriving in town there were lots of people out supporting from their cars and front windows, with the very hardy ones outside, waving us on. I pulled up on the beach front, looked up and burst into tears to see Jim Lilly, a huge inspiration for me.

I had two wing men on the ride, Jared Neighbours AKA Red Rocket Man (son) and Rob Sies with his home built machine, and a wonderful support crew of Rebecca Sies and her Dad Chris.

FANTASTIC CRICKET SEASON Henry Shipley (26) is making waves in the cricket world, with recently being named Canterbury Cricket Men’s Player of the Year, Best Bowler and Player’s Player.

Henry grew up on a farm in Greendale and started playing Junior and Senior cricket for Greendale when he wasn't playing for school. He also played Senior cricket for Darfield, after Greendale joined with them to form a combined team, as well as playing for Canterbury Country or Canterbury.

His family have always been involved with cricket, with Dad James playing a lot for Canterbury Country and Henry’s

Uncle playing for both Canterbury and New Zealand.

“Being involved in the sport wasn't particularly surprising”.

“I think the Saturday mornings at Darfield High School with Mr D (Brian Davidson) running some Junior sessions is my earliest memory,” commented Henry.

“I have been contracted to Canterbury Cricket since 2016/17. Going forward, I'd love to keep playing cricket for Canterbury and work towards winning all three titles (Plunket Shield, Ford Trophy, Super Smash). Hopefully, from there I will reach my major goal, to represent New Zealand consistently”, Henry continued.

Gaining the recent Awards came as a bit of a surprise to Henry, but he was delighted to win.

“I think my goal at the start of the season was to get on the field and work towards being injury-free, so in many ways, I was more satisfied with that than my actual performances. To get the recognition for some good numbers throughout the season was really nice, and hopefully that rolls into next season,” Henry concluded.

Another local player, Zak Foulkes, also received Canterbury Cricket Debutants First Class and List A Awards.

DHS SADD GROUP On Tuesday, May 17th, the Darfield High School Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) Group held an event with the Year 12 and 13 students to celebrate road safety heroes in our community, and start conversations about road safety.

The event consisted of seven interactive stations which students rotated through in their Whānau Classes. Topics covered were basic vehicle maintenance with Paul McIntosh (Macca) from Darfield Automotive, tyre safety, stopping distances,

vehicle safety ratings and fuel economy, what would you miss if you were harmed in an accident, licence conditions and general road safety, followed by a SADD quiz. Overall it was a good event and it was great to see students take part and learn about vehicle safety.

Thank you to Macca from Darfield Automotive for supporting our event and helping keep the community's vehicles safe.

OUTSTANDING CAREER After twenty four years of being involved with Annabel’s Educare and Kindergartens, Area Manager and Darfield local, Ceri Foote, is retiring on Friday, May 27th.

She has been one of the hearts of the organisation over the years!

Ceri started with the business after she and owner, Annabel Ensor, struck up a friendship while Ceri’s daughter Jessica was attending the local Nursery and Preschool, where Annabel was the Supervisor.

Annabel mentioned she was going to open a local Kindergarten, which suited Ceri well as she was keen to work within her own community. Ceri started as Head Teacher in

Annabel’s first Kindergarten, before progressing to Area Manager. She has seen numerous changes over the years, including the addition of Educare, as well as the addition of other Centres throughout Canterbury.

Ceri always wanted to be an Early Childhood Teacher, so trained in this field as soon as she left school. She has a real passion for this area of education, and has worked in many different settings during her career, including towns, cities and rural centres. She has seen many changes and growth during this time. Ceri has been part of a few key journeys, including helping Kindergartens set-up and

recognised, as well as pay parity for both Kindergartens and more recently, Early Childcare Centres.

It shows how she has a real passion for children and enthuses enthusiasm when speaking about how delightful the children she has met over the years are.

“Children are exciting, special and an absolute enjoyment. They have a thirst to learn and understand things around them, which is such a thrill to see,” Ceri commented.

“The set-up at Annabel’s Darfield is unique, with having both Educare and Kindergarten. It’s lovely to see the children interacting and often you see them leaning on the dividing fence, chatting to others on the other side.

“I feel extremely proud of the contribution I have made to the organisation over the years. The teachers are very talented, professional, dedicated and committed. The camaraderie within the team is absolutely amazing and it is a real honour to have worked with them.

“Annabel’s Education is a fantastic organisation to be a part of, and Annabel is an

amazing person who is very staff and child focussed. It has been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside her,” Ceri concluded.

“Ceri and I found we worked so well together, right from when we first noticed a gap in Early Childhood Education within Selwyn area and embarked on opening a private Kindergarten together,” commented owner Annabel.

“Ceri had the experience in Kindergarten that I did not, therefore, I put Ceri into the Head Teacher role, and I worked underneath her along with Lynn Cowie and Janetta Dykes.

“It would be fair to say Ceri has been a fantastic mentor to me

throughout these twenty four years, we compliment each other nowadays. I will miss having her by my side, and I know there will be a huge void to fill, but she won’t be far away, hopefully.

“We will miss Ceri terribly, but we have to remember this is a huge milestone in her life and an extremely well deserved one,” Annabel concluded.

Heading into retirement, Ceri plans to finish a few projects with her husband Brian, do some travelling and is looking forward to heading to England to see her son Nicolas and her three granddaughters.

MALVERN U3A Malvern U3A’s guest speaker for May was Alan Blackburn, MA. He spoke about environmental issues, the Achilles heel of China’s rise and a challenge to the Chinese civilisation state.

There is more than one Achilles heel:  Food security  Environmental degradation  Dwindling water resources  Energy dependence.

China is a 3,000 year old civilisation in the body of an industrial teenager, a megarich, dirt poor, overpopulated, undernourished and ethnically diverse mass of humanity, that is going through several stages of development simultaneously, and a coal addicted powerhouse.

While attempting to pioneer new energy technologies. A communist-led, capitalist funded giant travelling at an unprecedented speed.

If that is not enough of a challenge, environmental pressures have forced the leadership to reengineer an economy before it has finished industrialising.

Alan enlarged on this theme, acknowledging the amazing growth of China since Mao, the steps underway to alleviate the shortcomings, and the possible effect on neighbouring nations.

These include building huge nuclear power plants, massive

desalination plants and diverting headwaters of rivers that arise in China, but flow into neighbouring countries such as Kazakhstan, India, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

He concluded that China has the technology and the advantage of central decision making. But, will it be able to change its course?

The recent 2022 Selwyn Art Show was a huge success. The Show has been growing in popularity, and this year the 20th annual exhibition saw over sixty artist entries. This year’s Show featured a wide range of artistic mediums, including printmaking sculpture, painting, ceramics, photography, fused glass and fibre crafts. The Selwyn Art Show opened on the evening of Friday 20th May, with an address by Chloe Cull, arts programme coordinator from the Selwyn District Council. The opening event was also complemented by wonderful mellow jazz, provided by local musician Stephanie McEwin.

Two awards were presented at the conclusion of the Art Show, with both recipients receiving $200 worth of vouchers to spend on new art supplies from The Drawing Room. The People’s Choice Award went to Esther Gane of Christchurch, for her intricate scratchboard artworks of animals. The Youth Award was presented to Olivia Cassie of Rolleston, for her carefully rendered watercolour paintings depicting lighthouses from around New Zealand.

The Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council, who organise the annual event, were pleased with the high attendance of local artlovers over the weekend and the large numbers of artworks sold.

The event aims to celebrate and support the arts in Selwyn, and so the majority of proceeds go

back to the hard-working artists themselves, and the remaining money is used to cover the running costs of the event and fund arts-related workshops during the rest of the year.

The future looks bright for the Selwyn Art Show, and Arts Heart expects the event will continue to grow and flourish. In 2023, the organising committee are hoping to attract more young artists to enter the Youth Award and for other emerging artists to consider taking part. They believe that the Selwyn District is a great spot to be an artist and that the Selwyn Art Show is an important celebration of the amazing artistic talent in our region.

FUNCTIONAL ARTWORK If you’re interested in functional artwork, look no further than Musical Instruments as Art, at Te Huanui Gallery. Opening from 6pm on Friday, May 27th, with demonstrations from artists Paul Allen and Rua Pick, everyone is welcome as Te Huanui looks forward to holding its first official opening of 2022.

Paul Allen is an amateur music enthusiast, with a fascination for the blues and rock n roll in general. After a couple of trips to the deep south of the USA, Paul became interested in Cigar Box Guitars, as well as various rough home built guitars that make sounds.

Paul builds three-string shovel guitars and has market stalls where he sells vinyl records and Cigar Box Guitars for other local hobbyist builders, trading under the Rolling Retro Mobile Market.

Rua Pick was born on Moturua Island, in 1968. Rua was named

by Rongo Puke Ahitapu and Te Aue Hakaraia, very close family friends. He grew up with an artistic family in the Bay of Islands. During 1983 and 1984, Rua was inspired by the tutorage of Selwyn Wilson, who taught him kōwhaiwhai (painted ornamentation in Maori art, typically made up of geometric swirls) and encouraged him to pursue his creative style, empowering and enabling him to follow his artistic path.

Rua’s early influences were Goya and Dali. After leaving school he studied oil painting techniques from books focusing on 17th Century Dutch Painters. He travelled to Europe in 1988. The Prado and Dali Theatre Museums were pivotal experiences on his creative journey. On returning to New Zealand with his mind

completely saturated with art, Rua moved to Whaingaroa Raglan and developed his style in the genres of Social Surrealism, Mysticism and Symbolism.

Rua’s work has followed a personal inner journey on the river of the mind. This has dealt with the process of separation, vulnerability, empowerment and integration. From 1995 to 2011, Rua set up a Studio / Gallery called Toko Mata (The Visionary Post) in central Christchurch, which was a very creative, innovative and prolific period in his art making. From 2000 to the present time, Rua developed shaped wooden formats artworks, inspired by the natural world to paint on, with layered mixed media underpainting.

Many of these works were reproduced in the book, Whispers of Waitaha, in 2006.

From his new studio, Ko Te Ätärangi Puawänanga i runga i te mata o te Rä kapakapa kura (the flower of knowledge silhouetted on the face of the beating red sun), 2011 – to the present time, Rua has taken up Whakairo wood, bone and stone carving, mostly creating Taonga Puoro (traditional sound instruments), also playing these Puoro exploring their primal healing sounds. This has led to the forming of the Waitaha Taonga Puoro collective Kiki Pounamu in 2021, releasing two albums in 2021 and 2022. This year he embarked on a new venture with partner Tuarahonu, called

Hubcap Guitars by Paul Allen.

Raukarekare, utilising both the healing arts of Mirimiri and Puoro together, creating a new sound healing space called Te Whare o Mohua. He is currently creating a new art gallery called Te Mokoroa.

MARKING THE OCCASION 2021 marked 150 years of West Melton Primary School. Those of an early vintage recall a close-knit school of farming families, many of whom still reside in the district.

Planning for a weekend of events was underway, but Covid-19 restrictions forced the cancellation of the celebrations. The committee has now decided to mark the 155th anniversary in 2026. However, not wanting to let the occasion pass, a few ex-pupils have organised a casual luncheon on the 19th of June 2022, at Langdale Vineyard Restaurant, West Melton.

If you attended West Melton Primary School between 1947 and 1960, we would love you to join us.

The formation of Coalgate Bowling Club began in early 1946, when Allan Nimmo moved from Ohau in Otago to Coalgate. At the time, there was a large subsidy from the mines department towards miner recreation activities, and there were forty three men in Coalgate and Glentunnel connected to coal mining. Allan had previous experience with forming a Club, so he called a meeting to discuss forming a Bowling Club in Coalgate. Only seven people attended, so the meeting was cancelled. A month later, a more successful meeting was held, nineteen people attended, and it was decided to form a Club.

Recently the Club held their AGM on May 15th, where the new committee was elected for the 2022/23 season.

It was very pleasing to see the interest from Club members who were keen to carry on in their elected roles or add new ones.

Murray Grice continues his great support for Coalgate Bowls and remains in the Patron role and the Club welcomes Russell Morrison, who joins the committee for the first time.

The Bowling Club also has a lot of support from members of the other Clubs in the area, who play regularly in their winter tournaments.

The Club have spare bowls for anyone who wishes to head along and join in for a social rollup or be competitive.

This year they have Steph Kimber from Mike Pero Real Estate Darfield supporting them, and sponsoring their Open Day in September (despite not being a bowler). Steph also provides sponsorship for Hororata Golf Club and co-ordinates coaches and players (both learners and returnees) with the successful ‘She Loves Golf’ program. She promotes that 90 minutes is all you need to enjoy golf and how you play isn’t the important part.

Like bowls, golf is about getting out there, meeting new people,

and having a balanced life by enjoying a change of scene. Being an integral part of her community is very important to Steph, and you will see her cheerfully contributing and involved in all sorts of local activities and sports.

DARFIELD HOSPITAL UPDATE Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) will reopen Oxford Rural Community Hospital in mid-June.

The Oxford facility will reopen first because there is limited capacity in other aged care settings in Oxford. The majority of the residents are from this facility, and there is staff capacity in Oxford to provide care for the seven residents who wish to return.

In the districts that surround Waikari, Ellesmere and Darfield rural community hospitals, there are beds available in other local aged residential care facilities, and until we have sufficient staff to ensure the safe and appropriate care of their residents, their reopening will unfortunately be further delayed.

We continue to see widespread and elevated Covid-19 infection rates among our staff and our Canterbury community, including in the areas affected by these temporary closures. Residents were relocated to other facilities because Canterbury DHB could not guarantee staffing levels, that would enable these rural

community hospitals and local aged care facilities to provide safe and appropriate care.

The current circumstances require a discussion with our rural communities on how we might deliver an improved mix of services in these rural areas, that makes the best possible use of our resources and allows some services to be provided closer to home.

Canterbury DHB is committed to investing in rural communities and wants to work in partnership with them, and our staff, who know their communities best, to develop a future service model based on modern, evidencebased practice.

A working group comprising of clinical and operational staff, together with community representation, will be convened to develop a proposal on a possible future model of care in these communities.

We are aiming to share the proposal in three to five weeks.

We will then be looking for feedback, initially from staff.

There will also be a process for

listening to the views of the current residents and their families, and later the wider community.

In the meantime, our focus will be on ensuring a smooth and welcoming return home for the seven residents coming back to the Oxford Community Hospital.

Please, all farmers and small landholders, take this advice on board now and act on it.

The common theme Police receive from our community, farmers, landholders and house occupiers about their personal and home security is, “We have been thinking about it”. How about instead of thinking about it, putting some security measures in place to help safeguard your home, property and personal possessions to reduce the chance of you and your family becoming a victim of crime.

Suggested home security advice: 1. Always leave your house locked when absent from your address.

2. Spare key for the house, hidden in a well secure and non-obvious place (definitely not under the door plant pot, floor mat or gumboot).

3. When away from your address and at night time, have your front section gate shut and locked securely.

4. Vehicles should be locked and secured in a garage overnight

on your property.

5. Remove all valuables (laptops, cameras, chainsaws, tools etc) from your vehicles when left overnight or unattended.

6. If a lockable garage is not available, the vehicle should be locked, the ignition key removed and secured up your driveway with the section gate locked.

7. Consider fitting an alarm system to your vehicle and especially with four wheel drives, a GSP tracking device.

8. Where possible do not leave your vehicle parked on the street side overnight.

9. Have an alarm home security system and CCTV security cameras fitted to your home and farm buildings.

10. If away from your address for a period of time, consider having a reliable and known person to act as a house sitter or have a neighbour check your property in your absence.

11. Fit sensor-activated spotlights on your house and outbuildings.

12. Farmers, have your farm fuel tanks in a secure, locked and alarmed shed.

13. Farmers consider installing trail cameras on your property, driveway and around your farmhouses and outbuildings.

14. Consider engraving your tools and valuable possessions with your driver’s licence number for identification purposes,

should they be stolen. The Malvern Community Patrol have engravers that can be borrowed from them for a gold coin donation to the Malvern Community Patrol.

15. The Malvern Community Patrol can also fit and install secure screws to your vehicle number plates so that the number plate cannot be removed. They can do this for a cost of $5 per vehicle. Again, make contact with a member of the Malvern Community Patrol about this.

16. Keep a computer photo and serial number inventory of all tools, computers, cameras and valuables which have engraved or attached serial numbers for identification purposes should they be stolen.

17. Engage in a reputable security company to give you advice and quotes for the installation of home security alarm and CCTV camera systems.

If you observe a suspicious vehicle driving about our district which appears to be casing out properties, please record the vehicle number plate and report it at the time to Police.

Please take this advice seriously and implement some measures to improve your home, vehicle and farm security which will hugely decrease the risk of becoming a Victim of Crime.

WEST MELTON RUGBY UPDATE West Melton Rugby Football Club enjoyed hosting Ethel and Bethel last Saturday night. It was a fundraiser for their U16 team, who are heading to the North Island in the July school holidays.

The squad will be based in Hamilton and plan to play two games of rugby against school teams in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty area. The Club tries to plan annual trips for the U16 grade, as they understand the importance of keeping youth involved in sport, and these trips help build a good team environment and morale. The U16’s have had two wins and one loss so far this season.

The West Melton’s Division 3 team, known as the ‘Warthogs’ won the Alex Wright Memorial Shield against Leeston/BDI, last Friday night in hard fought match, 25-18 at Leeston. This Saturday they play Prebbleton, who are sitting on top of the

leader board currently by one point from the Warthogs, so it should be a great game on Saturday (1:30pm kick off at West Melton).

The Club has also celebrated 50th games over the past few weeks from some true Westy lads, cousins Luke and Sam Payne, as well as Patrick Walker.

I have spent a few days trawling Grant Robertson’s fifth Budget for any sign of meaningful investment into Canterbury, and there’s nothing.

Not a brass farthing.

Since 2017, the powerhouse of the New Zealand economy has been overlooked and ignored by this Government.

One of its first tasks was to axe National’s plan to continue the four-laning of SH1 from Rolleston to Ashburton. This effectively axed thousands of jobs and billions of dollars of investment from the Canterbury economy.

Labour has willingly spent $50 million on plans for a cyclebridge over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, but apparently won’t cough up $30 million for a new bridge in Ashburton, the main thoroughfare of the South Island.

Tourism businesses across the region have been wiped out by the border closure - but didn’t qualify for the $200 million Tourism Recovery Fund. The

regions that qualify are Kaikōura, Mackenzie District, Queenstown Lakes, Fiordland and South Westland - which have now been pitted against our own operators.

Then there’s the $3 billion Provincial Growth Fund. Again, greater Christchurch was not deemed to be in need of support.

If a region as beset by natural disasters as ours isn’t deemed to be in need of a little bit of accelerator funding, then I don’t know what is.

Where are the plans for the long -promised expansion of the maternity wing at Christchurch Women’s?

Don’t get me started on immigration - another woeful failure! The Canterbury harvest was reduced and rotten with nobody to bring it in - despite the pleas for two years from the arable sector for offshore contractors, and what about the health sector? We’ve learnt last week that the Darfield and Leeston Hospitals will remain closed for the foreseeable future because the CDHB just does not have the staff to keep them open.

These are just a few examples of where the Government could have invested in our region.

Despite announcing the biggest

Budget blow-out in New Zealand’s history last week, Grant Robertson hasn’t delivered for the regions.

Not content with a $6 billion per year spending spree (by far the largest ever), they’ve also raided future budgets - spending $2 billion from Budget 2023 and $0.4 billion from Budget 2024.

That’s before you count climate spending and the cost of living payment - which are on top, taking the total spend up to more than $9 billion per year of Government spending.

Since Labour came into power, Government spending has increased by 68% - they will spend a whopping $127 billion this year, up by $51 billion.

Surpluses have been delayed until 2025.

It is no surprise, that when you’re spending at these hyper levels, you have to borrow more, and Government debt has therefore nearly tripled to $173 billion.

That means Kiwis will be paying $4.9 billion by 2025 just in interest on that debt - twice what we spend on Police.

Be very clear, Grant Robertson’s out of control spending has caused the cost of living crisis that is gripping us all.

KIRWEE RUGBY CLUB DAY This Saturday, Kirwee Domain is the place to be, with Kirwee Rugby Football Club having their annual Club Day, starting from 9:30am. This season the Club has Under 6, 9, 10 and 11 teams, plus a Division 3 (1pm game) and Division 2 team (2:45pm game).

There will be something for everyone, with bouncy castles, food, coffee and the facilities open for refreshments. After the games have finished, there will be an Auction and DJ Singh Star to keep the night rolling.

This year our Division 3 side retained some of the Kirwee stalwarts and recruited well over the off-season to include some young up and coming talent.

With a short season this year, it’s best to make the most of the great atmosphere while you can, so get along and watch. There’s

also still time to strap on the boots and have a run around.

The Kirwee Division 2 team have put last year behind them and are coming along in leaps and bounds, winning both their preseason fixtures against strong North Canterbury teams. This has continued into the season with wins over Darfield, Southbridge and Springston.

A great off-season recruitment drive by our recruitment team secured some new local and town based players who have enjoyed the competitive rugby, along with the great social atmosphere. Notably, Rueben Boyes has been leading the backs and crossing the line for some impressive tries. Big thanks to Joey Benny for recruiting some quality players. This, along with Kirwee locals Liam O’Callaghan, Adam Dally and

Matt Colee, that have been driving the culture change and attitude shift, which has positively catapulted Kirwee Rugby Club. All directed by a proven and very experienced coaching staff consisting of Andrew Pearce, Kev Nicholas and Chris Kelliher.

WINDWHISTLE GOLF CLASSIC We were thrilled to be able to hold the 17th Windwhistle Golf Classic on Thursday, May 12th, at Fable Terrace Downs Resort.

We had a big playing field of 137 golfers on the day, a record for us! The Tournament day dawned sunny, with near-perfect golfing conditions for the Ambrose Tournament. This popular annual event is the major fundraiser each year for Windwhistle School.

The players enjoyed a delicious morning tea before tee-off and packed snacks on the course, provided by school parents and members of the community. This year the sponsors enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch kindly provided by Southfuels.

Following 18 holes of golf, there was an opportunity to unwind and relax in the clubhouse before the prizegiving and dinner.

The much anticipated and annual Auction was also part of the entertainment, with George Mannering from Hazletts as auctioneer for an action-packed Auction of amazing donated items, including local experiences, accommodation, meat and art. A Silent Auction was also popular with ‘friend against friend' bidding, meaning some great funds were raised for the School. The combined Auctions were a fantastic success.

It was a wonderful day out, all in support of a special School.

WINTER ROGAINE The 23rd ‘Heights of Winter’ Rogaine is being held in the Woodbury area, on Saturday, June 11th.

Teams can enter the classic 12 hour event, which is between 9am and 9pm, or the shorter 6 hour event during daylight hours of 11am - 5pm. With entries limited to 250 individuals on each course, it makes sense to

enter early for this classic event.

The event attracts people from all age groups, from casual trampers, Spring Challenge participants to adventure racers.

Entries recently opened, and there have been some worldclass athletes sign up already.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB A fine autumnal day greeted a very small group of shooters on Saturday, May 21st, for a Club Training Day, at 600 yards. A light wind blew across the range, enough to create some issues for some shooters.

As it was a Training Day, scores weren’t kept, but it was noted that Allan shot 50, 50 and 75 for a total of 175 out of 175. Great shooting Allan! Charlie and Mark’s scores weren’t at the same level.

The work is varied and interesting with a range of small through to large frames and components to be manufactured along with repairs to existing equipment at times.

Ideally, the suitable applicant will:  Be able to confidently weld using both MIG and MMAW processes to a high standard.  Have some level of experience with fitting / fixing machinery, predominantly used in the rural sector.  Be reliable with tidy work habits and high standards.  Have good communication skills, be self-motivated and work well in a team environment.  Be able to work unsupervised.  Have a good understanding of OSH workplace practises.  Have a current clean full driver’s licence.

Renumeration will be in line with experience.
