On Saturday, May 21st, the annual 250km Scooter Safari took place, with approximately 250 riders making their way from Christchurch to Hokitika. This year, riders saw snow and the wind was brutal at times, but those who took part dug deep to honour their own experiences of surviving cancer, or as a tribute to loved ones lost to cancer. This event is a huge fundraiser for the Cancer Society, and the event last weekend raised in excess of $350,000. Local rider Nicola Garlick commented, “We all have a tough moment on as we think about the loss of our loved ones, while dealing with the elements. Thanks to all of the organisers for putting on another great event.” Ex-local Vicky Rowe also took part in this event commenting, "Christchurch turned on a beautiful crisp morning on Saturday for the Scooter Safari. The same couldn't be said for

This year not only was it tough going physically but also mentally and emotionally. Little did I know how much my life would have changed since the last time I did this ride, not only was I diagnosed with a melanoma, but my Brother Andrew (Andy) was diagnosed with bowel cancer and sadly lost the battle six months later at the young age of 47. In his memory I had photos printed on the side of Vicky Rowe and her scooter that my 50cc scooter, showing the was designed with love and in Invercargill tram that Andrew memory of her Brother Andy. had helped restore and is
