ISSUE 1,032 Thursday 14th April 2022

Ben (16, turned 17 on NZ Secondary Schools race day), Holly (15), Jessie (13 at the time of competition) and Sam Smith (12) have enjoyed the Open Water Swim Season 21/22 despite multiple Covid disruptions. They competed in the Corsair Bay Series, NZ Banana Boat Swim Series (there are still more competitions to come this year) and both the South Island (SISS) and New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Competitions. Fit and Able ran a six race competition on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings out of Corsair Bay, Naval Point and Lake Tahi, Roto Kohatu Reserve which are fantastic training swims for the larger national Banana Boat NZ Ocean Swim Series. The four Smith kids all train out of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre but love the different aspects required to

swim in the open water. Weather conditions, tides, swim direction and generally adapting to swimming amongst hundreds of mixed aged swimmers is just part of the fun. Akaroa and the South Island Secondary Schools was a fabulous day even with Covid restrictions, meaning only groups of 100 swimmers at a time and no gathering of the entire group (no medal ceremony either). All four kids achieved great results with both girls winning their age group titles in the 2km race and Holly also managing to be the first woman to cross the finish line. Jessie wasn’t far behind in the open grade finishing a notable sixth. Ben finished third in his age group in the South Island Secondary Schools, also coming in a creditable fourth male in the open category.
