A dominant season for Darfield was capped off with a dominant performance in the Final of the Canterbury Country Premier Men's Competition at the Association’s home ground of Main Power Oval in Rangiora last Saturday. Darfield dismissed LeestonSouthbridge for 113 in the 39th over and collected the required runs in the 28th over for the loss of only 2 wickets to be crowned winners of the Fulton-Wright Cup. It was fitting to have John Wright present the cup to Darfield Captain Liam Foulkes at the conclusion of the match. Darfield chose to bowl first after winning the toss on a new and green surface. There was plenty of nibble early on for the LeeBridge openers to deal with, and they were travelling alright until the 5th over when newly capped Canterbury player Zak Foulkes removed the typically stubborn Toby Doyle. Tom Innes snared Brayden Hill for 20, and Foulkes then got fellow Canterbury team
mate Harry Chamberlain for a duck when he was sharply caught at square leg by Tom Dempster. 27/3 in the 9th over was not the start Lee-Bridge had planned, and despite the best efforts of Tim Gruijters and Captain Sam Chamberlain to soak up some balls, the Darfield bowlers never wavered from their immaculate lines and lengths. Ryan Hughes removed both men to expose the middle order, and a counter attack of sorts was deployed by Dougald Munro (33) and Chris Beatson (18), but Will Greenslade snared them both after already taking the wicket of the 3rd Canterbury player involved in the match, Will Williams. Andrew Bell and Liam Foulkes picked up a wicket each, as the innings was wrapped up for an underwhelming 113. If there was ever a side to make Darfield work hard for all those 113 runs it was going to be Leeston-Southbridge. Continued on page 5...
