Last weekend a team from Darfield High School competed in the South Island Secondary Schools Dragon Boating Championships, held at Lake Rua on the outskirts of Christchurch. Originally, we had two ten-person boats entered, but some members had to reluctantly withdraw in the week leading up to the event, due to illness. As we often do these days we were able to adapt, and the results on the day exceeded everyone's expectations. After only five training sessions, the team was excited and motivated to take on the challenge of competing against other South Island schools. Over the course of four hours, the team competed in six races. Winning their first-ever Dragon Race by a good four seconds. This win gave the team the encouragement and enthusiasm to give it their all in every race, and it set us up for an extremely successful day. The first two races were heats of the 250m sprints, and our time was just fractionally outside the top three. We took part in the B Final against two Rangiora High School teams, again achieving a convincing four-second win. We finished that competition in fourth place overall with a time of 24.72s. Onto the 420m Turns Finals, we had not practised this distance before the competition, so it was the unknown. Our first heat was outstanding, running away with a win and a time of 31.63s. The second heat was our fifth race and only defeat of the day, but with our fast time in the first heat, we qualified for the top three and the Trophy Finals, where we took on Rangi Ruru and Rangiora Gold. The adrenaline and excitement
going into the Final was high, with the race being neck and neck at the top mark, but the Rangi Ruru boat's turn was faultless, and they pulled away. We held on, taking second place
with our best time of 31.03s. Our coaches, Evan and Cam, were amazing with the team. The support from parents and families leading up to the event and on the day was fantastic.
A remarkable achievement from our young team. This is what making memories is all about! Pip Deans, DHS Sport Coordinator.
