The Southern Lakes Ultra (SLU) is a seven day, six-stage ultramarathon that local Mark Beattie completed. SLU is a total of 270km and 10,000m ascent. Those competing ran a stage each day, starting on Sunday, February 20th and finishing on Saturday, February 26th, with stage four taking two days due to being over 70km. Other stages ranged in distance from 16km to 50km, and there was the option of doing this event supported

or unsupported. Unsupported athletes had to carry everything they needed for the week during the race except for a tent. Mark competed in the supported category where athletes had a bag, limited to 16kg, that was transported each day by the crew and therefore only had to carry their daily requirements with them each day. Each night the crew set up camp at a different spot, which included

erecting twelve tents for the athletes and crew to sleep in each night, each tent housing six people. The race began at the top end of Lake Hawea on Dingleburn Station and finished at the Shotover Jet site just out of Queenstown. There were approximately seventy amazing athletes that took on the challenge, all from New Zealand due to Covid restrictions not allowing the many international athletes to participate. The race finished with a trip on the Earnslaw and dinner and prize giving at Water Peak Station. “I was surprised to finish second supported male with a time just

under 36 hours. The highlight of the race was the beautiful scenery on days three and four up in the mountains and pulling off first equal on stage three. Overall, the race week was an awesome experience, meeting people from all over New Zealand and making friends with many of them. The race director, Kerryn Bell and her crew put on an amazing week for all of us. I would like to thank my wife Lauren and the rest of my family for their support, and also my running coach, Karen Muller from Fit For Life, for her help in getting me race ready,” Mark commented.
