Merry Christmas fellow road users! We'd like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all of our customers (new and old) for their continued support this year. It's been another very interesting Covid affected year in the motor trade, even still, because of our wonderful customers choosing to shop local and support local businesses we have been able to support numerous local groups, non-profit organisations and events throughout the year. Bowling Tournaments, Golf Fundraising events, Community Vehicles, District Nurses just to name a few. Thank you and Merry Christmas. Covid has affected the motor industry worse this year than last. We are noticing some car parts getting hard to source. Regular automotive parts like rear brake pads for Mitsubishi Outlanders and engine oil for Ford Rangers to name a few. We haven't run out yet but we have ended up shopping around and using different suppliers we don’t normally use. All the while

we keep sourcing quality parts from reputable suppliers with good warranties. One thing we won't skimp on is quality. There is always someone out there who will do the job cheaper, but at the end of the day, I have to go home knowing the vehicles we fix are 100% roadworthy and the parts we supply meet and exceed the vehicle’s capabilities and won't let you down. An example of this is recently we had a heavy trailer into the workshop that required four new tyres. We advised fitting good quality, commercial trailer tyres. Commercial tyres are constructed much stronger than standard car tyres and handle the stresses exerted through them during towing, especially when the trailer starts to sway in windy conditions. They are also more expensive! The customer went away and purchased four cheaper car tyres from another supplier. While car tyres meet the load capabilities of the trailer they don’t exceed them and under adverse conditions will be stressed to the

limit. Another example is we had a customer recently in the workshop that we completed one of our regular full services on their vehicle. We recommended replacing their front brake pads and front discs. They took advice from someone else who tried to convince them to take a cheaper option on the brake job. Again, the cheaper option would possibly meet the standards but would not exceed them. This in turn would cause early brake failure and a more expensive repair down the track. Your safety is our number one concern. I was recently asked tongue in cheek by a customer while completing a WOF for them, “You are just looking for something to fail me on”. I replied tongue in cheek, “Well of course I am, that's what you're paying me for”. But, it's true we just want your vehicle to be safe. You can fix it where you like and by whomever you like, but make an informed decision. So, Macca's advice to you, the customer and vehicle owner, is to question the mechanic and parts suppliers. Ask why they are using that part, is it quality, is it up to the task? Will it last, is there a better alternative and how much more is the better product, and why do they recommend that? Because as a mechanic we make decisions daily that directly affect your vehicle’s safety and performance. We would be selling ourselves short if we took shortcuts on your vehicle to save a few bucks. Happy and safe Christmas motoring from Macca, Janelle and the team at Darfield Automotive.
