Charing Cross Cheesery at Riverside Market in Christchurch are celebrating. They have just been awarded a Top New Zealand Cheese Store 2021 accolade, which has come as an unexpected delight to owners Sue and Guy Trafford. Trafford The award from the NZ Specialist Cheesemakers Assn recognises cheese shops across Aotearoa which celebrate and support the local industry by educating cheese lovers and promoting locally made cheese. The Trafford’s both make and sell cheese. Since 2012, they have operated Charing Cross Sheep Dairy, a boutique sheep dairy on their property on Bealey Road, Charing Cross. Initially, they planned to make ice cream, but have branched out into making a range of products in a processing room attached to the dairy. In 2019, they were offered the opportunity to open a cheese shop at Riverside Market in Central Christchurch to compliment the three other ‘buy local’ cornerstone market shops setting up there. “The Market environment is wonderful, with lots of diverse shops and eating places in a beautiful setting and it is really popular with locals and tourists. There is a great community spirit amongst the shop holders and active support from Riverside’s owners and managers,” commented Sue. The Market has given them a perfect venue to showcase their award-winning sheep milk products and those of other South Island artisan cheesemakers. “We only sell South Island cheeses and we curate a range of
cheeses that are now highly sought after and so the shop has been a real hit. They are very committed to a ‘buy local’ philosophy and a relationship-based consumer experience where people can taste and discuss products before they buy. It really confirms for them that shoppers are looking for something new, different, local and award-winning products, a meaningful personal experience and to have their cheeses cut at the counter after tasting and selecting them. Sue and Guy have noticed an increasing demand for sheep, goat, buffalo and other nonbovine cheeses. They chose to milk sheep because sheep milk is a highly versatile, nutritious, milk that offers significant sensory, health,

While it took a bit of convincing people to try the products initially, it is a whole different story now as sheep milk products are much more common in New Zealand and increasingly so in Canterbury.
They found post-earthquakes an increasingly diverse public were looking for more diversity in cheeses reminiscent of what is available internationally but artisan based and New Zealand produced.
