Local, Darfield High School student Hannah King and fellow Canterbury based players Lucy Jenkins, Jorja Miller and Emma Dermody (who was selected but unfortunately was ruled out through injury) have all been identified as some of New Zealand’s best emerging under twenty women rugby players, who have been selected to attend a High Performance Development Camp next year. The Camp was meant to take place this month in Hamilton, but due to Covid restrictions it has been rescheduled. Players were selected from school, club and Farah Palmer Cup rugby and represent eleven Provincial Unions. Rodney Gibbs, who coached the New Zealand Barbarians for their series against the Black Ferns in 2020, heads the coaching group for the Camp and will be joined by several former Black Ferns including Victoria Grant, Melissa Ruscoe, Anna Richards and Kristina Sue as position specific coaches. “This Camp will bridge the gap in a player’s development that has been identified. focused,” Black Ferns Assistant Coach, Wesley Clarke said. “The aim is to get these players together for a National Camp and accelerate their development by exposing them to top level position specific coaching. “The long-term goal of the programme is for New Zealand to be able to field an under twenty women’s team for international fixtures. “Women’s rugby is a massive growth area and we are seeing incredible talent coming through right across the country. It will be exciting to get them all in one place to work together for a week,” Wesley concluded. “I’m very grateful to have been given this opportunity, it’s a fantastic chance for me to mix and upskill myself with highclass players and coaches. It gives me all the incentive I need to get fitter and practice to improve my skills over the summer before the camp next year. I will also try to have a break and do some horse riding over summer to keep me fresh for rugby,” Hannah explained.
