The 40th annual Darfield Artweek officially opened on Friday, October 8th by Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn. With Alert Level 2 restrictions in place, a congenial crowd of close to a hundred contributing artists and sponsors celebrated the opening of the annual community art exhibition, which saw the first viewing of 351 artworks by 151 artists. The coveted Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) Premier Award went to West Melton artist, Henry Turner for his painting ‘Echos’. Shirin Khosraviani, Artweek’s Judge for 2021, commented, “This work is an outstanding example of imagination and careful use of technique. There is plenty to explore in the markmaking and the potential narrative.” The Friends of MCAC Award, donated by Dee and Gerald Innes and Meg and Jum Morten, was awarded to Mitsuyo Field for her painting ‘In the garden shade’, which the judge praised as “a brilliant example of watercolour at its finest. The artist has demonstrated a love for the medium by being restrained and celebrating the subject matter.” Neela Curran from Springfield, received one of the Malvern Business Merit Awards for her painting, ‘Calm’, described as, “A little gem that packs a punch. Excellent control of colour and the watercolour medium.” Rangiora artist Daniel Pye, was awarded the Lumino the Dentist Award for his ‘Neuro Fern’
copper sculpture, which “evokes tranquillity and the sense of wonder.” Justine Woosnam from Oxford, won the Selwyn Creative Network Award for ‘Window to the Soul’, “an outstanding mixed media work deserving of recognition. The artist has perfect control over her chosen medium.” Two prizes were awarded in the newly created Youth Category, generously sponsored by Bob
Justine Woosnam from Oxford, whose ‘Window to the Soul’ (top artwork) won the Selwyn Creative Network Award.
