LOCAL COUPLE CELEBRATE 70 YEARS In 1950, John Creamer travelled to Oxford to participate in a game of rugby. The game was followed with a cup of tea that was served by Miss Leith Inch. Little did they know at the time that this chance meeting would be the catalyst that would lead to them celebrating their 70-year wedding anniversary with friends and family on January 30 this year. Following the initial meeting, Leith and John's friendship grew and they became engaged in 1953. From the time they first met, John spent a lot of time travelling to the Christchurch Hospital Nurses home or to Leith’s family home in Oxford to court her. At times, Leith would catch the bus out to Darfield to see John and would stay at his sister's home. In his words, this meant there was “no scandal”. After a four-year courtship, John Robert Creamer married Leith Maynard Inch on Saturday, January 30 at 2.30pm. The wedding was held at St Andrews Anglican Church in Oxford with the Reverend Ken Robinson officiating. A reception followed at the Oxford Town Hall with approximately 80 guests present. Following their marriage, John and Leith raised three boys, Mark, Tim, and Sonny, and they now have three grandchildren and six

great grandchildren. John first moved to Darfield in 1937. After leaving school he became an apprentice butcher and ended up owning the Darfield Butchers Shop for many years. Leith spent many years working alongside the doctors at the Darfield Medical Centre as one of the local District Nurses. Together, they have travelled widely visiting places such as Russia, China and South America and followed several international All Black rugby tours. At one point, they purchased a campervan and spent time working and travelling in Australia for a year, picking fruit as they went. Upon retirement, John and Leith travelled to the United Kingdom and worked their way around there. They have been avid walkers and have traversed many of New

Leith and John have also belonged to many local organisations and have contributed much to the local Darfield Community. In Mark’s words “reaching their 70th anniversary is one hell of an effort”.

Congratulations to Leith and John on such a wonderful milestone, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.

EMERGENCY SERVICES FAMILY DAY More than 2,000 people recently joined Selwyn’s Emergency Services teams for a family day out at the Rolleston Community Centre. There was plenty to see and do as crews from Rolleston Fire and Emergency, Police, Community Patrol, St John and Selwyn’s Civil Defence and Emergency Response Teams turned out to demonstrate their equipment and skills in a safe, fun environment as part of the Summer in Selwyn event series. Families had the opportunity to practice their CPR skills, participate in a stretcher carry challenge, police

fingerprinting, and observe how first responders access a wrecked car. The day not only provided a firsthand look at the wide ran ge of duties our

emergency services carry out but also showcase the strong partnerships that exist within Selwyn's emergency response community.

Several emergency services were on hand to demonstrate their equipment and skills at the Selwyn Emergency Services Family Day.

The opportunity to spend more time on farm while providing a dedicated service for shareholders attracted Darfield local and new environmental manager to work for Waimakariri Irrigation Limited (WIL). Ben is the first full-time internal environmental manager to work for the cooperative and he says this demonstrates the importance WIL places on assisting shareholders to meet their environmental requirements wh ile also r espon din g to current and future environmental challenges. “Spending more time out on farm with shareholders while also considering what the future holds really appeals to

me. I am keen to get to know our shareholders and find out how I can help them to achieve their environmental goals.” Growing up on his family’s farm near Ashburton, Ben understands what it takes to operate a successful farm on a practical level. Ben sees challenges and opportunities ahead for WIL’s shareholders and is looking forward to helping them navigate options for a sustainable farming future. “Obviously we have challenges in terms of regulation and climate change, but we also have plenty of opportunities including technology and efficiency gains. The irrigation scheme also has an opportunity as a cooperative

to secure a more sustainable and reliable water supply.” Along with building strong relationships with WIL’s shareholders and familiarising himself with the irrigation sc h eme, Ben will be supporting the preparation of WIL’s discharge consent renewal during the first few months of his new role. In his free time, Ben enjoys sport and the outdoors and shares his love of nature with his young family. “I love diving, fishing, hunting and cricket. Going away camping is another activity we enjoy doing as a family. We like to be outside doing stuff whenever possible.”

There’s a reason it’s the most iconic race in NZ. The event organisers, the volunteers and the supporters make the race what it is.” Julia expresses a huge thanks and appreciation to everyone that helped her train, her support crew and her family who dress up each year as ‘Where’s Wally’. It was the 10th time standing on the start line for Kirwee local and Captain of Team CP, Richard Greer. “I have been a part of every year bar one since 2001. It’s a big commitment to do this race because it demands a lot and it’s not something that you want to do any less than your best. So juggling my own expectations, work and family commitments is always a balancing act. “This year it was about making it to the start line and giving myself a chance of racing after getting crook 2 1/2 weeks prior. “I am so fortunate to have all the support to get to the start line, while out on course and every little bit in between. My family and the Teamcpnz community is amazing and makes a massive difference when you are in the hurt locker and starting to question whether lining up was a good idea… ” Richard finished 1st in the 2 Day Individual Veteran Male Category.

Darfield High School Principal Andy England (pictured on the front page) commented that it was a huge privilege to compete alongside his students in this amazing race. “I was happy with my race the pain was worth it! Dexi (my pooch) and I have been living in Whitecliffs for 7 years. We are looking for somewhere permanent to call home in the Malvern Hills/neighbouring districts. I don’t need anything flash but it must be private, independent, self-contained with the ability to connect to the internet or a section or similar with electricity and water access where I could perhaps insert a prefabricated cottage.

DARFIELD BASED

A stranded motorist knocked on the door of an inn named “George and the Dragon.” “Could you spare a poor stranded motorist a bite to eat?” he asked the woman who answered the door. “No!” she screamed, slamming the door. A few seconds later he knocked again. The same woman answered the door. “Could I please have a bite to eat?” he asked again.

“Get out, you good-for-nothing!” shouted the woman. “And don’t you ever come back!” AJer a few minutes there's another knock at the door. The woman comes to the door. “Pardon,” said the motorist, “but could I have a few words with George this me?”
