INTERNATIONAL CRICKETING DEBUT Nineteen-year-old local, Robbie Faulkes is making a name for himself in the international cricket scene. He recently represented New Zealand in ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 held in Benoni, South Africa. Robbie says it’s his first time representing New Zealand. He got his opportunity when he was called in as a replacement for Rahman Hekmat. “It was very surreal, I didn't really think there was much of a chance of being called up so I was very shocked. To be able to represent NZ was very special.” He says his standout moment was his team’s win against Afghanistan. “To win that low scoring game against a strong team was awesome.” Asked what the pressure is like at that level of international cricket, Robbie says there was a lot of support and encouragement to just enjoy the experience but there was definitely a bit of pressure to perform. Robbie currently plays cricket for Darfield Premier and

Canterbury Country and last year played in a number of teams and tournaments including Under-19 ODI, Hawke Cup, New Zealand Provincial A Tournament, and New Zealand Under-19 Tournament. He p r e v i o u s l y p l a ye d f o r Christchurch Boys High School, representing the school in New Zealand Junior Secondary School Boys tournament. Last year, Robbie took up study at Lincoln University on a sports scholarship and is also studying a bachelor of land and property management. He says the scholarship is definitely really helpful at balancing study and cricket, but “in general studying and playing cricket doesn't really overlap too much.” “The scholarship has definitely helped my cricket a lot in the first year, the strength and conditioning program at Lincoln has been great and being able to train with the Canterbury A squad over the winter was also excellent for my game.” Robbie is not alone in his cricketing career, he has two

brothers, Zac and Liam, and his Dad, Glen, who all share his passion for cricket. Zac (21) represented Canterbury and Canterbury Country in age level and provincial cricket and is currently in the Canterbury A team and Canterbury Kings, while Liam (23) is currently the Cricket Development Officer for Canterbury Country Cricket. Robbie says having his brothers and Dad to train with while growing up was important and watching his Dad play for Canterbury Country made him love the game. When asked if his brothers and his Dad like to give him any pointers, Robbie says they love giving him advice but always encourage him to just enjoy the game. His Dad has

always been his inspiration and watching his brothers play has also inspired him. Another inspirational player is Robbie’s favourite New Zealand Black Caps cricketer, Kane Williamson. “Because of his humbleness and leadership.” Robbie is a right-hand batter and a right arm medium pace bowler but says he enjoys batting the most. While he took a great catch from his bowling when he played against Ireland U19, Robbie says playing against Afghanistan in the U19 Cricket World Cup at South Africa was his most memorable game. Robbie has played cricket since he was four years old and his advice for young cricket players is to: “Work hard and enjoy how much fun it is playing cricket with mates.”
