Welcome

From the Headmaster Malvern College Egypt prides itself not only on the high academic aspirations of our pupils, but also on the enormously diverse range of opportunities the dedicated staff provide to stretch the pupils beyond the usual curriculum. From sports and the arts, to community service and trips, every pupil has the chance to explore their own strengths and weaknesses whilst pushing themselves to learn more each day. We have once again seen many exceptional activities take place in the College over the year so far. From Year 4 visiting a university dentistry department to our youngest students opening the brand-new theatre with their fabulous winter concert, the College has been bustling with activity. It is always wonderful to look back and reflect on past achievements. However, I hope the articles contained within this magazine also inspire all members of our community to push their own levels of learning and have fun at the same time. Malvern College Egypt, a school of many nations, but a family of one.

MCUK Visit We were thrilled to welcome our visitors, Mr. Allan Walker, Director of International Schools, and Ms. Nicola Dudley, Director of Education from Malvern College UK, in October. This visit was linked with our termly board meeting. However, our guests also enjoyed meeting our range of students including our new prefect teams. We hope that they had a wonderful stay with us here in Cairo and look forward to seeing them again soon.

Headmasters’ Coffee Mornings It is always a pleasure welcoming parents into the College and working in partnership with them – it is what makes a true community International School. Our parents are our best ambassadors in the wider community so it is always nice to meet informally to talk over issues and just get to know each other.

Ambassador Visit We were very pleased to welcome her excellency Moshira Khattab, former Minister of Family & Population, to Malvern College Egypt in October. Moshira has done fantastic work in her career and has been awarded with the Order of Good Hope by the President of the Republic of South Korea, the highest order which can be awarded to a foreign national, as well as being awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Italian Republic by the President of Italy. It was lovely to show her around the College whilst also chatting to students about their lessons.

Leadership Investiture Assembly The Secondary School student leadership team took part in a day of leadership training. In late October Mr. Moore developed a varied programme ranging from team building activities to leadership discussions. The Head Boy, Aly Marzouk, and Head Girl, Zeina Hany also led their own activities, as they began to take on their role of running the Prefect Council.

Remembrance Day MCE were well represented by the Head Boys and Girls of both Secondary and Primary School who laid a wreath on behalf of the College. Year 5 also attended as part of their learning about the World Wars. There was time to walk around and look at the gravestones and the students commented on the young ages of many of the fallen. This was a valuable opportunity for our younger students to reflect and remember all those who died fighting for freedom in their countries and we were extremely impressed with the respect and politeness that our students demonstrated throughout the whole ceremony.

Prefect Leadership Day It was a pleasure to greet so many proud parents this week as we invested our Primary and Secondary School Student Leadership Teams. Parents and staff, indeed the whole College, are incredibly proud of all the students and wish them every success in their new role. We were wonderfully entertained with a range of musical pieces by Alia Hussein, Rola ElDebakey, Lilya Sidky, Zeina Hany, Nisan Harmanci, Mariam Abd El Latif, Salwa Khaled and Talita Jada, and both the Primary School and Secondary School choirs.

Gap Students

Coming to Malvern College Egypt was never an initial thought of mine as I was planning how to spend my Gap Year; however, once the opportunity arose, I was very keen to explore life in Cairo, and gain valuable experience in the PR and Marketing Department. Having finished my education at Malvern College UK, I travelled with a friend to Vietnam where I bought a motorbike and travelled the entire country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh, a journey of approximately 2000 kilometers, which was a once in a life time experience. I arrived at Malvern College Egypt in September after a very busy summer, ready to throw myself at every opportunity that was available to me. I have managed to help teach music, sport and academics, and have had an amazing time working with the pupils, as well as the wonderful PR and Marketing Department. Exploring parts of Cairo has been another highlight, especially visiting the iconic pyramids and of course the famous ACE club.

For me though, the best part of working at MCE are the amazing people that I have met. They have helped me forge some memories that will last a long time, as well as shape my time in Egypt into one I will fondly remember, and always want to return to. However, it has come my time to say goodbye to living here in Egypt - in January I am travelling to Kenya to volunteer at another school called Pembroke House. I have thoroughly enjoyed my three months here at MCE, and will definitely be making a visit later in the academic year!

FUE Dentistry Trip In Science Year 4 learned about teeth. We had the pleasure of visiting the Future University in Egypt’s Dentistry department to see all the dentists busy at work. The children were able to experience what it is like to be a dentist, handle the equipment, look at X-rays, give an examination, and say good-bye to cavities. They had previously been learning about how to treat their teeth with care, by cleaning them regularly and avoiding eating sugary snacks all the time. The photos speak for themselves, showing it was an exciting and educational trip for all.

Science

Circuså We welcomed ‘’Kidsxhibitions’’ to Malvern College Egypt in November to perform a very entertaining “Science Circus show” for Year 6 and 7. They demonstrated some mesmerising tricks and explained the physics behind them which really helped us to see concepts of momentum and centrifugal forces for our own eyes. It inspired the students to work hard and understand the concepts behind some of the more complex physics theories and phenomenons of todays science.

Wadi Degla Trip On the last Sunday in November, we are lucky in Egypt that the weather is still quite pleasant and it is in fact ideal for an outdoor educational trip. In the UK, things would be somewhat different! Thus we decided in Year 3 that it was the perfect time to consolidate and enrich our Autumn half-term Science topic, “Rocks and Soils”. We arranged an educational visit with the Wadi Environmental Science Centre (WESC) to Wadi Degla. The Wadi is a valley which is around 30 km in length. It passes through the limestone rocks which were part of the marine environment about 60 million years ago. Therefore, it is rich with fossils and has great examples of sedimentary rock.

10 10

Malvern View Issue 3

WESC had set up a number of engaging activities for the children to participate in. These included fossil hunting and making replica fossils as well as learning about the layers of the earth, permeability and porosity through practical investigations. The children were assisted by the WESC organisers and the parent helpers who kindly supported us on the trip. Overall this was a truly fantastic educational experience. The practical investigations within an exciting environment proved to be very valuable. The children learned lots of new things but also had lots of fun.

Volcano Experiment Year 5 had great fun erupting their homemade volcanoes as part of their Geography topic on “Earthquakes and Volcanoes. As part of this topic, they learned about the structure of the earth and tectonic plates, how earthquakes occur and their consequences, volcanic eruptions and the advantages and disadvantages of living near volcanoes. It is a fascinating subject and one that can be taught through a variety of learning styles: watching clips of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, investigating tectonic plates practically with biscuits and cream cheese, vocabulary extension through creative writing and plenty of discussion about examples that we see in the news almost every week somewhere in the world. Of course, it is also an ideal opportunity to make links with other subjects across the curriculum, including Science, English and Maths. An exciting topic all round!

Bake Sale

What a bake sale! Inter-House rivalry, effort and House spirit were on show at the bake sale held by our four Houses. It was an incredible sight to see: cinnamon rolls to cupcakes to donuts to personalised house-glazed cakes to the students behind the desks singing their hearts out for their House. Thank you to all of the students who took part - you all did your Houses proud. A tremendous 11,898.50 LE was raised for our four House charities. It is always incredible to see all students getting one hundred percent involved in the House events with such spirit and teamwork, and we consider these great qualities of our pupils at Malvern.

FoMCE Quiz Night In October, Friends of Malvern College Egypt invited the College and wider community to join us here for the MCE Quiz Night. It was such a wonderful community evening with all friends, staff and parents coming to compete in a highly competitive event. Seven categories of challenging questions, ranging from famous faces to identifying airports and rivers by their pictures, got everyone digging deep for the answers. It was a lovely way for everyone to socialise together, and it was great to see so many people taking part. Well done to The Artisans who were the quiz champions for the third consecutive time.

Elgar Dress Up Day The whole College, including many teachers, really got into the spirit of Halloween this year dressing in the theme ‘Red or Dead’, supporting Elgar House Charity dress up day in October. We saw witches, vampires, devils, ghosts, bats and pumpkins galore! An enormous thank you to all parents for making your children look so terrifyingly scary and a huge well done to all for raising so much money for the charity “Branches of the Vine” in Maadi that supports children with disabilities. It was wonderful to see how everyone made such an effort with their costumes - it just goes to show what spirit we have here in our Malvern community.

Chocolate Factory Visit

For the first half of Autumn Term the Year 4 focus in Humanities was ‘Chocolate’. The children learned all about the history of chocolate, going back in time to study the Ancient Maya period to understand when the cocoa bean’s delicious quality was discovered and how this first discovery evolved over time. To enhance the children’s learning in this subject a visit took place to the Ganache Chocolate Factory. Here, the students were able to experience at first hand how chocolate is made and learned about the journey of a cocoa bean, from bean to bar. Each child made a box of delicious chocolates to take home which were a variety of chocolate types and flavours. They discovered what the difference is between white, plain and milk chocolate, and how the process of chocolate making is quite a complicated procedure involving a great deal of scientific knowledge. Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed this valuable and delicious learning experience. They are now chocolate experts!

Police Visit

We would like to personally thank the Police for the wonderful event created at Malvern College Egypt. It was a spectacle for all to see, and was enjoyed by every single pupil who took part. We appreciate all of the effort that was put in to make the day very special for everyone involved, and we hope that we can host the Police visit again next year as it was such a success here at Malvern College Egypt.

Shoebox Appeal

Over 350 shoeboxes filled with gifts, were delivered to Al Shaimaa Primary school in December by our student council along with Mrs. Sally Dibb-Holland who has driven this initiative. Huge thanks to Sally on yet another splendid job in coordinating our children to think of others.

Pharaonic Race

Mr. Adrian Bennett, our new Art/DT teacher, took part in the charity 100km run on November 17th. He was ‘Running for Zahra’ a little girl who was born with mitochondrial disease. The funds he raised went towards buying her specialist equipment so that she can sit upright and learn how to move on her own. It was a mammoth race; 2 and a half marathons long through the desert and was first initiated back in 1977 after the Egyptologist, Ahmed Moussa discovered a piece of rock telling the story of Pharaonic soldiers running a race of 100 Km. Thanks to the support team of staff who helped Adrian complete the run, especially Mr. Luke Webb who ran the equivelant of a marathon in support. 14

INTER HOUSE SWIMMING COMPETITION

Our first ever full Inter House Swimming Competition was an amazing success. Almost every student from year 3 to year 10 took part. Personal best and school records were broken in many races.

Malvern View 15 Issue 3

Swim Meet

The competitive sports’ season started with a bang as our Lion’s Elite Swim team took to the water for the first of the swim league meets hosted by BISC. Having competed at this meet last year and coming a respectable 5th, this year we were determined to do better and we didn’t disappoint! We ranked 3rd overall and we were delighted with all students for their efforts.

Inter House Swimming Competition Our first inter-House swim galas were a wonderful success and we were incredibly proud of all the students who participated in the meets. There were numerous students who entered events who would have preferred not to, but in the spirit of MCE, did so for their House and their friends. Displaying such an attitude and willingness to participate is what these events are all about I sincerely hope that students will learn from this and participate fully in all future House sporting events.

Lip Sync Battle In October, groups of students had been busy rehearsing their renditions of songs with dedication inside and outside of lessons, and the time finally came for them to perform in Assembly in front of an esteemed panel of judges and the whole of the Secondary School. It was truly wonderful to see so many students and teachers enjoying themselves on stage. Well done to all those who took part and provided us with an afternoon full of entertainment. Well done to our winners, class 10A.

Co-Curricular Activities

From learning various musical instruments, exercising the pupils’ sporting abilities at various levels, cooking, ballet, karaoke, samba and many more, our pupils have been enjoying their extensive Co-Curricular Activities programme. The photographs go to show the variety of different activities available here at Malvern, and it is always great to see everyone throwing themselves at new opportunities and activities during their education. It is very important for our pupils to get involved around school wherever possible aside from their core education, as the skills that they will learn from these activities will help them progress their character and fundamental life skills.

Golf CCA JW Marriott One of the activities on offer for our students, is Golf at the JW Marriott Hotel. Beginning in September, our keen golfers were able to go once a week to practise their skills on the fantastic facilities provided by the JW Marriott. It is impressive to see such young players putting so well and even better than Mr. Kittermaster.

We aim to complement the students’ academic learning experience in the classroom, by delivering a varied, extensive programme of Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) for each and every student to take part in. Here is a short insight into what has been going on this term at Malvern College Egypt. Auditions were held and roles have been cast for this year’s school production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Rehearsals are now well under way, and students have been busy committing lines and choreography to memory. A whole school effort has been drafted in, with students contributing their ideas to the set and costume designs, as well as helping with the sound and lighting for the actual performance. An enormous improvement has been evident in all our aspiring ‘thespians’ as they learn techniques to assist them with the convincing portrayal of their characters. We are all looking forward to being entertained by the performance later in the year.

Students and their families alike, have all benefitted from the skills they have acquired in the Cookery CCAs, with students taking home a whole host of delicious treats that they have made including quesadillas, brownies, pizzas and fairy-cakes to name but a few, making full use of our wonderful Food Technology facilities. Our CCA programme also allows our oldest students in the school the opportunity to take part in the running of CCAs with the new ‘CCA Mentoring Scheme’. Students feel an enormous sense of responsibility and provide invaluable help during Lego, Cookery, Gymnastics and Art and Crafts. Students will be recognised for their efforts and leadership skills at the end of the year.

Winter Concert We were privileged to witness two wonderful concerts in our brand new theatre. Thanks to the entire staff at MCE who worked tirelessly before and on the day itself to make sure that our children had the best opportunity possible. It is a testimony to their professionalism that every staff member stayed for the evening concert to support their colleagues. Special thanks of course to Mrs. Tina Marsh who was the driving force behind both concerts.

Headmaster Farewell A note from Mr. Duncan Grice our founding Headmaster on his final day in December 2017: At the end of the Autumn term the whole College came together to bid farewell to Mr Duncan Grice, our founding Headmaster. Below is an extract from Duncan’s final note to our community. We wish Duncan all the best for his future endeavours. We have much to be proud of as a College and I thank all our staff for the hard work they have put throughout my tenure as Headmaster. Without them none of what has been created here could have happened. I would also like to thank the entire Malvern community for your support in trying to make MCE the number one school here in Egypt. Many of you signed up for MCE based on listening to me sell you the vision of what the College would become. I promised a school where students came first. I promised an open-door policy where parental involvement and communication was welcome. I promised to recruit excellent UK trained teaching staff. I promised to develop student leadership opportunities. I promised a focus on traditional values such as respect, manners and discipline. I promised to offer as many sporting opportunities as possible promised to develop a school with a clear focus on learning. I promised a school with parent learning opportunities through workshops. I promised a school that valued the creation of a school community working together in partnership and I promised a focus for academic excellence through target setting and tracking students. Looking back, these were bold promises but I hope they have proven to have not been empty words and that I did indeed keep my promises to you and that you have not regretted your decision to join Malvern College Egypt. I would like to leave you with a quote by the greatest cricket commentator of all time, the doyen of commentators in fact, Richie Benaud upon his retirement: “Thank you for having me. It’s been absolutely marvelous.”
