Smelling a cover up, he instead takes the case and the entire legal system to court...

It was 1977, the year of skintight polyester, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and Saturday Night Fever. The Sex Pistols were storming up the charts, skateboarding was the latest craze and Angela Rippon danced with Morecambe & Wise. And at Hampstead Theatre in London, Mike Leigh and his cast were putting the finishing touches to Abigail’s Party, ferocious black comedy and landmark of twentieth century theatre.

In her suburban living room, Beverly prepares for the arrival of her guests. She and husband Laurence will play host to neighbours Angela, Tony and Sue. As the alcohol flows and the ‘nibbles’ are handed around, Mike Leigh’s ruthless, achingly funny examination of 1970s British life begins…

Abigail’s Party was premièred at the Hampstead Theatre in 1977, with the role of Beverly being immortalised by Alison Steadman. A record sixteen million people watched its broadcast as Play for Today, underlining its status as a true modern classic and national treasure.

‘Bold and bonkers’

A reckless reappraisal of the life of former Ugly Rumours front man and Britain’s first pop Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The story of how one man went from peace-loving, long-haired hippy and would-be pop star to warmongering multimillionaire in just a couple of decades. Throw in a stellar cast of larger-than-life characters – Cherie Blair, Princess Diana, John Prescott, Peter Mandelson, Alastair Campbell, Osama bin Laden, George W Bush, Saddam Hussein and Gordon Brown – it’s Yes, Minister meets The Rocky Horror Show! and a musical like no other.

Armonico Consort & Baroque Players

The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble Director Christopher Monks
A towering masterpiece of the early Baroque and one of the greatest pillars of music history, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 offer a stunning array of brilliant instrumental writing, opulent choruses and moving arias.
Over 400 years ago this astounding work marked the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque. The publication in 1610 almost certainly helped Monteverdi gain the prestigious post of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s in Venice, which he would keep until his death in 1643.
What better way to experience this incredible work than in this performance by Armonico Consort, led by its director Christopher Monks – the period instrument ensemble that’s built a reputation for the freshness and drama of its interpretations.

Malvern Theatres is delighted to welcome back the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company. The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company was created twenty six years ago and for over a decade has brought favourite G & S operas to Malvern in productions that have received outstanding reviews from the national press and regular four and five star ratings. All performances are accompanied by the acclaimed National Festival Orchestra.

THE MIKADO
Set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, The Mikado satirises British society, customs and pretensions through a farcical Gilbertian plot brimming with humour.
In the topsy turvy world of The Mikado, flirting is punishable by death and NankiPoo (the son of The Mikado disguised as a wandering minstrel) attempts to escape from the formidable Katisha and into the arms of his love, Yum-Yum. Meanwhile Ko-Ko, the hapless Lord High Executioner has much on his mind and needs to work hard to avoid his own decapitation!
The Mikado is arguably one of the most popular operas ever written and includes numerous memorable musical numbers: Three Little Maids, Tit Willow and A Wandr’ing Minstrel. Just the ticket for a fun-filled visit to the Royal Hall.

THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD

The Yeomen of the Guard is set in the Tower of London. Colonel Fairfax, a gentleman, soldier and scientist is wrongly accused of sorcery, imprisoned in the Tower and sentenced to be beheaded within the hour. To avoid leaving his estate to his accuser he secretly marries strolling gypsy, Elsie Maynard. Jester Jack Point is also in love with Elsie but agrees to the marriage knowing that Fairfax will soon be executed. However, Fairfax escapes, throwing the Tower into confusion and setting in motion a number of intriguing plot twists ending in tragedy for one of the players.
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE

One of the most enduringly popular of Gilbert and Sullivan’s great comic creations, The Pirates of Penzance is full of memorable melodies. Jam-packed with sentimental, swashbuckling pirates who are really peers of the realm, a completely dotty Major General and a bumbling bunch of hopeless but hilarious policemen, what could possibly go wrong?

In this classic tale of greed and guilt, Flabbergast Theatre’s Macbeth fuses a rigorous and respectful approach to text and storytelling to bring a magical, lucid interpretation of Shakespeare’s blood-soaked tragedy to life.
Flabbergast gives us an instinctive view of Shakespeare’s most wretched tragedy, working to draw out the parallels with modern society. At its heart, the dominant recurring theme and fundamental narrative that powers The Tragedy of Macbeth is the masculine fear of feminine power; and in this sense, the play is as pertinent today as it has ever been. This timeless work examines what it meant to be a man, and what it meant to be a woman and underscores the social contracts between the two that dictate the actions of the protagonists.
Playing to their strengths and background in puppetry, clown, mask, ensemble and physical theatre, Flabbergast present the bard’s original text accompanied by and supported with exhilarating live music to produce a provocative and enjoyably accessible show. The beautifully performed music and vocal work combine into a powerful live soundscape creating an atmosphere that both compliments and juxtaposes the action. With a stripped back set, and an aesthetically arresting design, the tightknit ensemble of actors performs a dark and visceral manifestation of the work’s essence and underlying themes.

Frank Hardy has a gift. A gift of healing.

A frayed banner hangs outside a desolate village hall. The sick, the suffering and the desperate arrive from out of the wind and the rain. They come in search of restoration, a cure. They are promised ‘a performance’, an opportunity to spend an intimate moment with a mercurial showman, who offers hope and salvation to the afflicted. Through the 1950s and 1960s, Hardy and his wife, Grace, travel to remote corners of Scotland and Wales, before eventually returning to Frank’s native Ireland. Accompanied by his manager Teddy, they move from village to village, bringing with them an unpredictable mix of theatricality and the spiritual. Using four enthralling monologues to interweave the stories of these three intriguing characters, Brian Friel takes us on an extraordinary journey of shifting perspectives and uncertain memories.
Brian Friel (1929-2015) was an award-winning Irish playwright and author. He is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest dramatists, having written over thirty plays across six decades. His major works include Translations, Dancing at Lughnasa, Molly Sweeney and Philadelphia, Here I Come!
Someone Like You - The Adele Songbook is an outstanding live concert performance featuring stunning vocals, a super-talented band and an incredible repertoire of all your favourite Adele hits – including songs from the brand-new album ’30.’ Hand-picked by Adele herself on Graham Norton’s BBC Special, the outstanding Katie Markham leads this world-class show - from powerhouse vocal performances to intimate acoustic songs. Prepare to fall in love again with songs such as Make You Feel My Love, Someone Like You, Rolling In The Deep, Skyfall, Easy On Me, Oh My God and many more!
