It has glitz. It has hits. And when the show sashays into the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in January, La Cage aux Folles will be the splashiest musical the Theatre ever has mounted. The show won a Tony Award and is one of Broadway’s all-time biggest hits. It boasts beautiful “showgirls,” a wonderful score by Jerry Herman (Mame, Hello, Dolly!) and colorful production numbers. Hear such memorable songs as The Best of Times and I Am What I Am, which became an anthem of a generation, and was recorded by countless artists. The show explores what it is to be a family, to love without condition and to be proud of who we are.

Get your feet tapping to the tunes that defined the rhythm of America before World War I, with Tintypes. Feel the patriotic fervor of You’re a Grand Old Flag. Remind yourself that you, too, can be a Yankee Doodle Boy, and savor the moment in America the Beautiful. This grand pageant, featuring works by George M. Cohan, John Philip Sousa and Scott Joplin, among others, is a blend of patriotic songs, romantic tunes and ragtime that will remind you of those who made America great in the early 20th century. It was the age of the orator, William Jennings Bryan – and the inventor Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. It also was the heyday of early Broadway and that most glamorous of Ziegfeld girls, Anna Held.

What’s next?

Kato and Mercurio will return to the work yet again, honing the music and the book, then on to a full staging. “The audience and critical response has been a dream come true for us,” said Mercurio. “We’ve been receiving calls and e-mails from so many people, so we’re hopeful there will be life after NYMF.”

“Every regional theatre needs to contribute to the national stage with new works,” said Kato. Academy is a significant contribution.

WE BROKE ANOTHER RECORD!

Fanny Brice: The Real Funny Girl concluded its run at 97% sell-out, which exceeded all other plays.

Academy won the Daegu International Musical Festival Production Award on November 22 at the NYMF Awards. The prize: an opportunity to present the show in South Korea.

“Our four children and five grandchildren have been privileged to participate in the arts available. With opportunities and exposure to other areas, they have chosen to make Jupiter their home all of their lives. We had an opportunity to do a major donation and chose the Maltz Jupiter Theatre as the recipient because of the many philanthropic programs the Maltz family has provided, adding to our cultural existence. Costs accelerate, income declines, but nurturing the arts is a necessity.”

Watching our ‘baby’ grow!

Academy made it to New York! And what a journey it was. “We’ve arrived as a regional stage,” said Malz Jupiter Theatre Artistic Director Andrew Kato of the musical, which premiered to sell-out audiences in early October at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). The idea for the musical – our “baby” –was conceived a decade ago by Kato, who helped develop it into a musical with composer John Mercurio.

Thank you to our sponsors

This “baby” has grown to adolescence after 10 years of readings (including one at Columbia University) and a reading as part of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2008 Emerging Artists in Theatre Playwriting Series, made possible through a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Its themes are universal.

and burnishing the music until it was ready for its run in Manhattan.

“With every step, you learn more about the process,” Kato said. In New York, the production values were smaller, with a cast of nine young, seasoned actors and six piece orchestra. The score has a contemporary musical theatre sound with a strong pop influence, and a nod to Mercurio’s love of classical music - think U2 and Suzanne Vega, with a touch of Sibelius and Beethoven.

In Academy, a group of prep-school students makes a bet on whether they can persuade an unsuspecting freshman to break a few rules to succeed. But when events in this Faustian tale spiral out of control, the boys become entangled in a fight for their own academic and personal survival. In the end, Academy is a pop chamber musical about boys learning to become men — and learning to be true to themselves.

The spring semester at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s Conservatory of Performing Arts is under way, with a new class schedule and a new director of education.

“We have a wonderful team of teaching artists to provide excellent instruction,” said Julie Rowe, the new director of education, who comes to the conservatory, or COPA, from St. Petersburg.

A highlight of the 17-week semester at COPA, which runs through May 8, is the Musical Theatre Wheel, which encompasses drama, dance, and voice, and will conclude in a performance onstage May 8. The Wheel is offered Monday afternoons for grades 3 – 5, Tuesday evenings for grades 6 – 12, and for home-school students on Friday mornings.

Another highlight is COPA’s full production of Fame: The Musical, which will perform onstage May 21 and 22. This audition only activity will rehearse Wednesday evenings.

New this year is a program for Pre-K children on Monday and Tuesday mornings in musical theatre, puppetry, theatre crafts, and improv. Also new this year, COPA will offer adult classes during weekdays January 4 – March 25 in Acting, Tap, Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Playwriting, or join one of the Play Reading Clubs.
