As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, welcome to the latest packed programme from The Maltings.

We pride ourselves on being the go to destination for a Great Night Out for every age and taste in Berwick, and we’ve put together a full schedule of theatre, music, dance and our own Berwick Festival Opera performances to make sure we achieve exactly that. We also have Christmas in our sights - our amazing professional team are already working hard to bring you another wonderful Panto (Sleeping Beauty this year), aiming to bring you even more glitter and sparkle than last year’s best selling Little Red Riding Hood.

We’re absolutely committed to producing high quality professional work in Berwick for Berwick and the surrounding region ourselves, and also to supporting the wealth of local talent that exists in our region. So we’re also delighted to be hosting the Pulse Dance platform early next year for the first time, and to continue to showcase the work of Tideline Runners and The Maltings Youth Theatre. We believe this is a crucial part of our remit as a local charity in receipt of public funding, and one that we devote as many of our resources to as we possibly can. However, it also relies on your support as audiences and ticket buyers to fully deliver the unique live experience we all want to be able to enjoy in the heart of Berwick.

Derek Ryan’s rise to become one of the biggest stars of Irish Country music has been phenomenal.

Few artists have made such an impact on the Irish country scene in just five years as the singer songwriter, with his distinctive new sound and original songs.

Lil’ Jimmy Reed Band

One of the last surviving performers of classic Louisiana down-home Blues, Lil’ Jimmy’s stinging guitar work, gritty vocals and haunting harmonica have been taking Europe by storm for years. In 2014 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. He is accompanied by Bob Hall, widely regarded as the UK’s finest blues and boogie pianist, and by the diminutive dynamo Hilary Blythe on rock steady bass.

A supernatural treat perfect for Halloween.

Der Vampyre (The Vampire) is conducted by Peter Ford, returning after his huge success with last year ’s The Mikado to lead Rocket Opera’s superbly talented company of North East based singers in this Romantic opera in two acts by Heinrich Marschner.

Based on the original story of The Vampyre (1819) by John Polidori (and not the garlic-hating Victorian incarnation from Bram Stoker ’s Dracula), this is the ghoulish tale of a dead man able to come back to life year on year after drinking the blood of the living by moonlight….

First performed in 1828, when Vampire tales were particularly popular throughout England, France, and Germany, Marschner ’s work played all over Europe to great acclaim. If you’ve never heard his music before, prepare for a pleasant (and possibly shocking) surprise – an opera of dramatic musical contrasts, as fresh and accessible today as when it was first performed.

LA VOIX HUMAINE Saturday 26 November 8pm & Sunday 27 November 2pm A high-octane one act opera for soprano and accompanying pianist, starring Berwick-based soprano and Berwick Festival Opera favourite Tamsin Davidson.

The opera is based on the play of the same name by Jean Cocteau, who worked closely with Poulenc on the libretto in preparation for the opera’s premiere in 1959.

It recounts the last tragic phone call between an anonymous woman known only as ‘Elle’ and the lover who’s spurned her - emotionally tense, touching and striking in its simplicity, this is perfect material for an intensely intimate Studio Theatre performance.

Pupils of The Yehudi Menuhin School Tuesday 7 February 7pm

We’re delighted that pupils of the Yehudi Menuhin School are returning to The Maltings after their first sell-out and much-praised appearance in February 2016. Talented young musicians from the world-famous specialist music school will perform a varied programme of piano solos and chamber music in Berwick, en route to their annual tour of Scotland.

The Yehudi Menuhin School was founded in 1963 and aims to give talented young string players, pianists and classical guitarists a rounded education, allowing them time to fulfil their musical potential alongside their academic studies. Many past pupils are now well-known figures in the music world, including Nigel Kennedy, Tamsin Little, Melvyn Tan, Kathryn Stott, Paul Coker, Colin Carr, Paul Watkins, and Nicola Benedetti.

Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera, conducts one of Puccini’s most popular operas, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband.

The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticised views of Japan.

Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton of his young, innocent bride.

An Evening with Jo Shapcott Friday 7 October 7pm

A fascinating encounter with award-winning poet Jo Shapcott. She is the author of ten books of poetry, including Electroplating the Baby (1988), winner of the Commonwealth Prize and Of Mutability (2010), winner of the Costa Book of the Year Award. Judges commented that her book was “very special and unusual and uplifting... The subject matter was so relevant that if any poetry book could capture the spirit of life in 2011, this would be it”. She is a phenomenal two-times winner of the National Poetry Competition (1985,1991), and received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2011.

Using precise, colloquial diction, Shapcott draws on a wide range of sources, including popular culture and science, and uses her surreal wit to great effect. She has collaborated with composers (including John McCabe, Detlev Glamert, Nigel Osborne and Stephen Montague) to set her lyrics to music, has travelled all around the world as a guest speaker, and is a regular guest on radio and TV. “Shapcott remains overwhelmingly a poet of presence, renegotiating the concrete world with as much brio as her own dancing cow… she remains a pioneer among contemporary British writers” The Guardian

LOUISE CATTRELL FIRST LIGHT

A new series of etchings, monoprints and paintings commissioned by Berwick Visual Arts and The International Print Biennale from artist Louise Cattrell, which explore the transforming qualities of natural light within landscapes that are connected to the Rivers Tweed, Tyne and Thames.

With printmaking integral to her practice, Louise has exhibited nationally and internationally including Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Towner Gallery, Eastbourne and PayneShurvell, London. She has undertaken residencies in Bulgaria, America, Switzerland and the Australian desert and won awards including a John Minton RCA award and a British Council fellowship in Sri Lanka.

"The paintings of Louise Cattrell haunt the imagination with their mysterious beauty. They appear as timeless as the landscapes they depict, and yet somehow distinctly contemporary. Each work is as it exquisitely painted as anything by JMW Turner, and seems to show a world that still looks just as it must have done in his day – the unchanging rocks, seas, hills and skies of the long ago past – but there is always another dimension to Cattrell’s art. She is a romantic for the twenty-first century."

BEYOND THE BORDER NEW CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM SCOTLAND Granary Gallery 11 February – 14 May 2017

Since the 2014 independence referendum, Scotland has faced an ongoing period of intense scrutiny. Political shifts in the 2015 general election and the 2016 European referendum ensure Scotland remains in the spotlight of national, and indeed international, politics. As the country continues to go through a period of reflection, change and re-evaluation, Beyond the Border by photography collective Document Scotland, is a timely examination of Scottish identity aiming to challenge clichés and explore the land, its people and its identity.

Sophie Gerrard’s Drawn to the Land is an intimate look at the role women farmers and crofters play in shaping the rural Scottish landscape.

Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert’s Edge of an Empire brings history to life in a fascinating study of the Antonine Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire.

Stephen McLaren reveals the world of Americans with Scottish ancestry who retain close affinity with the ‘Old Country’, even though they may never have set foot there.

Colin McPherson presents A Fine Line, a year-long exploration of the physical border between Scotland and England.

GEMMA BURDITT Our current artist in residence is Gemma Burditt, an animation director and illustrator of short films, music videos and projections.

She has an innovative approach to film-making that uses techniques including animation, live action and documentary.

Gemma is working with researchers at the Centre for Rural Economy and Institute of Sustainability at Newcastle University, to document dairy farming in Northumberland, exploring the factors that impact on its success, from disease and nutrients in the soil to current European policies and subsidies.

Work from the residency will be exhibited at The Gymnasium Gallery in Spring 2017.

The Northumberland Pulse Dance Platform, now in its sixth year, celebrates the work of dance groups across the county.
