East Grinstead 14 vs. Eastbourne 15

Saturday 15th February 2025 • Match report by Matt Pysden • Photos by John Feakins

As always it is a fierce encounter, with this one being played in good spirits with a very large crowd, but with no quarter given!

East Grinstead have a knack of stifling Eastbourne’s fast paced attack and in the first half this was again the case with East Grinstead, probably getting the rub of the green, but also forcing Eastbourne into plenty of errors. Following some good forward pressure, Eastbourne scored on the 28th minute through Man of the Match, Leon Wood, who dived over from short range. Captain Howe kicked the conversion to lead 7-0.

It took only 5 minutes for the home side to get into Eastbourne’s half and get a score back followed by a conversion to level things up at half time.

The second half was quite error strewn and lacked flow, East Grinstead appeared to get on the wrong side of the referee as the half went on and were regularly punished for it.

Against the run of play, East Grinstead scored and converted to lead 14-7. Following a lot of possession without result, Eastbourne eventually forced a penalty and Howe kicked it to get the away side within 4 points with 10 minutes left.

Eastbourne then had a lot of the ball for the final 10 minutes and eventually Stuart Baker crossed for Eastbourne, after a superb cross field kick into the try zone, Baker outstripped the defence to get a clear hand to the ball first and put Eastbourne in front.

With only a few minutes left, Howe used the whole minute to make his conversion, only for a frustrated East Grinstead to start the charge down early, which allowed Howe to take another whole minute off the clock.

From the restart, Eastbourne kept possession and forced a penalty, which they kicked to the corner, ran the clock down and kicked it out to take a very pleasing away win 15-14 and avenge the defeat at Eastbourne earlier in the season.

In other news, Eastbourne 2nd team (Nomads), destroyed Burgess Hill’s first team for the second time this season to remain top of their league.

Eastbourne’s third team came up short, but plenty of people playing rugby for a great club going in the right direction, which it has been for quite a few seasons now. A great example of a grass roots rugby club, doing a lot right. Well done to all involved.

Impressive win for Eastbourne as Trinity are tonked!

Eastbourne RFC’s first XV welcomed Trinity to Park Avenue on Saturday and ran out impressive 64-17 winners.

With perfect conditions and a sell-out prematch lunch in honour of the late first team player

Dave Webbon, best friend of the president Adrian Norwood, the 2nd team secured a massive win over league rivals East Grinstead II, to go top of the league.

The stage was perfectly set for the 1st team to avenge their narrow defeat earlier in the season.

Eastbourne started well and showed dominance up front which eventually transferred to a push over try from a mighty scrum, with youngster Jack Curtis scoring from No8. Three minutes later Mason Dowel, who continued his excellent form in attack and defence, crossed for Eastbourne to lead 10-0.

Against the run of play, Trinity pulled one back but neither side had kicked their conversions. That was before Dylan Viles, who was playing with man flu, bumped his way between two defenders to keep his impressive try scoring run going. This time Howe adjusted his radar and took the lead to 17-5.

Trinity eventually got some front foot ball and Eastbourne took their foot off the gas and let Trinity back into the game with another try. But Eastbourne’s hot-stepping spider monkey, Leon Wood scored to take the lead out to 24-10, with Howe kicking another conversion.

Frustratingly, Eastbourne conceded a try on the stroke of half time to only lead by seven points, following a dominant display.

The second half was by far Eastbourne’s best of the season, and treated the massive crowd to a wonderful display of running rugby and hard defence. They didn’t conceded a point and scored 38.

Josh Buckwell powered over from short range first, Dylan Viles secured his 2nd of the match, joint Man of the Match, Owen Davies was next with a deserved try to cap off another solid performance in the back row.

The spider monkey Leon Wood was at it again! This time hot-stepping multiple defenders to pass to Stuart Baker who gassed the last defenders to score out wide. Big Jerry Montes, not to be left out, got in on the act, just before Aaron ‘Andy Goode’ Hossack, bent his arms around his gut to fizz a lovely ball out wide to Maxence Saint-Andre to score. Saint-Andre also had an excellent game and a try was a nice way to cap off an industrious performance on the wing.

Howe kicked five conversions in the second half for Eastbourne to win 64-17.

Man of the Match was a three way tie between Saint-Andre, Davies and Wood. They contested the post-match Man of the Match antics among themselves as disappointingly Trinity decided to leave without coming into the bar to share food or a beer.

Eastbourne RFC vs. Combination Team of Burgess Hill and Bognor

Sunday 2 nd February 2025 | Location: Eastbourne RFC | Competition: RFU’s Inner Warrior League

Eastbourne RFC celebrated a historic moment as they fielded a full squad for the first time since the revival of the section in 2023. Facing a formidable combination team of Burgess Hill and Bognor, Eastbourne demonstrated their prowess in a highly competitive match.

The match kicked off with Eastbourne showcasing fierce determination. Key players Imogen Graham, Becks Tyler, Jasmine Lawes, and Ella Watson made their debuts, and their impact was felt immediately. The forward pack, led by Graham, Lawes, Tyler, and Faye Easton, provided a solid platform for the backs to capitalise on. Strong carries and relentless support work allowed Eastbourne to maintain momentum.

The back line, featuring Watson, Grace Seaton, Demi Norwood, and Chloe Seeley, executed excellent lines off the shoulder, making multiple line breaks into the opposition’s 22-metre area. The new half-back combination of Emily Morse and Abi Martin ensured quick ball delivery and organised plays, giving the Eastbourne backs ample opportunities to strike.

In the centres, Molly Chaput and Kayla Power, recently selected for Hong Kong U19s, displayed remarkable footwork and work rate, breaking through the initial line of defence. A standout moment of the match occurred when Martin delivered an inside ball back to Chaput, catching the opposition off guard and opening up space, thanks to the efforts of Power, Jess Hawes, and Angel Howell.

The match was capped off with an impressive 80% conversion rate from Jas Moulding, who not only showcased her kicking skills but also crossed the try line twice. Eastbourne’s dominance was evident as they cruised to a resounding victory.
