Cast out of iron for SATB choir duration: 4 minutes Text by the composer: I’ve been cast out of iron; I’ve been blackened by fire; I’m rusted and worn; The heat gets to me.

Composer’s Notes: The word “iron” is normally set in two syllables (cf. Holst’s “In the Bleak Midwinter”) but I decided it would flow better in my phrasing as a single syllable, like “fire” but with an added “n”. I was having trouble finding just the right poem for this, so I took the odd step of writing my own text. I hope its literary qualities are made up for by musical ones.
