Public to be consulted on future of Malmesbury’s Victorian cemetery chapel

Public to be consulted on future of Malmesbury’s Victorian cemetery chapel with Malmesbury Town Council to stage two open days and public meeting

The future of the old Victorian chapel in Malmesbury is in the spotlight, with Malmesbury Town Council asking for ideas on how it could be used by the community.

Located in front of the cemetery on Tetbury Hill, the chapel was built in the 1880s as a non-denominational place of worship, for small services.

In recent years it has fallen into disuse and closed to the public, but now Malmesbury Town Council wants to breathe new life into the historic building. Councillors are hoping the chapel could once again be used for funeral and interment services, and also be available more widely for community groups.

On Wednesday May 28 from 7-8pm, the Town Hall will be the venue for a public meeting, to discuss ideas and feedback from the open days, which will help the council develop its plans for the chapel.

The stone chapel, which isn’t listed, is about 30 feet long and 16 feet wide, and contains period features, including a wooden vaulted ceiling.

Cllr Ian Wallis, who sits on Malmesbury Town Council’s Burial Committee, said: “It is a beautiful building, that has been part of the history of the town for around 140 years, which has fallen into disuse, and it would be nice to make it into a functional space again.

“We have written to all the local churches and funeral directors and have had a very positive response to the idea of having the chapel available when there are burials and interments.

“We have also contacted local groups, like the Warden & Freemen of Malmesbury and Malmesbury History Society, to invite them to the open days, and everyone is welcome to come along and to give their input.”

Just over a year ago, a survey was carried out to discover what work would need doing to make the chapel useable again. The building is structurally sound, but will need some restoration, redecoration and other works.

The Malmesbury Concert Band will be entertaining passers-by and shoppers in Malmesbury’s Market Cross/ Birdcage Walk on Saturday, 17th May from 1030 to 12 noon, with a selection from its new summer programme.

This will be the start of a busy summer schedule for the band, which will have included playing at the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2 in Europe in Cuckingstool Mead on Thursday, 8th May, local fetes and bandstand performances in Keynsham, Stroud, Swindon, Cirencester and Chippenham during the summer.

The band will be playing from a varied repertoire, which includes some popular numbers from artists such as Abba, Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse.

Director of Music Art Robb said: “We always look forward to playing in the Market Cross/Birdcage Walk, a regular engagement for us, and we know how much the public enjoy our music. We will be delighted to see local residents and visitors alike.”

The Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean, held on Saturday, March 29th, in Malmesbury, was a tremendous success. Volunteers collected a total of 37 bags of rubbish + A pet pushchair which was later collected and put to good use and a fold up table. During the event we covered the entire town and then tackled Filands separately. A huge thank you to everyone in the community who participated, to Jo for overseeing the refreshment tent, and to Idverde for providing all the litter-picking equipment. We will definitely look to hold another event in the future.

Why not try bellringing?

Church bellringing, known as campanology, is a centuries-old tradition that combines art, community, and engineering in a unique way. Far beyond its use to call parishioners to worship, bellringing has played a historical role in marking significant events, celebrations, and even warnings in times of peril. The melodic tolling of bells resonates not only through towns and villages but also deep within the hearts of those who hear it, evoking a sense of timeless connection.

In England, change ringing—a style developed in the 17th century—offers a fascinating challenge. Instead of playing tunes, ringers perform mathematical sequences of bell sounds, creating intricate patterns. Each bell requires precise control, with ringers carefully coordinating the timing to achieve harmony.

Bellringing is also a social activity, fostering camaraderie and teamwork within local communities. In Malmesbury we have a weekly practice every Tuesday evening as well as service ringing on Sunday mornings.

Modern technology has enhanced the world of bellringing with simulators, apps, and online resources for learning and practice. Yet, the essence of campanology remains rooted in the physicality of pulling ropes and the resonant sound of bells echoing over landscapes.

Whether you’re drawn to its music, heritage, or challenges, bellringing offers a rewarding experience, blending history with community spirit. No previous experience is necessary! We will train new recruits. Bellringing also offers a mental challenge, as you will need to remember patterns, stay alert, and adjust to changes during ringing practices.

It’s a perfect way to meet new people, develop a sense of responsibility, and contribute to the ongoing tradition of bellringing. Whether you’re young or old, churchgoer or not, we welcome all new recruits with open arms.
