Delivering Joy and Inspiring Brighter Futures

Reach Out and Read® is a national nonprofit organization that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encourages parents or caregivers to read aloud to children.

The program, which is currently utilized by the Wilmington Hospital Health Center Pediatric Practice, helps to identify developmental milestones and teaches parents how to engage with their children through reading. And now, as the result of a generous $10,000 donation made by the Junior Board of ChristianaCare, the program will be expanded to other primary care practices throughout the health system.

In addition to this lovely gesture and in lieu of holiday gifts, the Junior Board distributed poinsettias to every patient at Christiana and Wilmington Hospital on Christmas Eve.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Junior Board for proudly supporting the Reach Out and Read® program since 1998 and for bringing holiday cheer to ChristianaCare patients!

In Our Own Words: The Katz Family

Bruce E. Katz, M.D., began his professional career as a mechanical and biomedical engineer in Silicon Valley after graduating from Northwestern University. He earned his medical degree at George Washington University, completing both his internship and residency in orthopedics at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

Bruce, a gifted board-certified spine surgeon, completed his fellowship in spine surgery at Tulane University in Louisiana, University of Louisville Health - Jewish Hospital in Kentucky and AO Trauma in Germany. He built a successful practice as a spine surgeon with First State Orthopedics, making the list of Delaware Today Top Docs many times.

He had wonderful interpersonal and technical skills and showed compassion and competence in his care of patients. He involved his patients in decisions about their care, helping them to think through their preferences. He also had a wonderful sense of humor, and his patients felt at ease with him.

When Bruce passed away after an arduous battle with cancer, we decided to honor his memory by giving back to ChristianaCare. In 2022, we established the Bruce E. Katz M.D. Endowed Annual Lectureship in Orthopedics and Surgery to teach new and innovative ideas to staff physicians.

The gift illustrates our gratitude for ChristianaCare physicians, nurses and staff who cared for Bruce during his illness: Alfred E. Bacon III, M.D., Mark J. Corso, M.D., Stuart S. Felzer, M.D., Edward M. Goldenberg M.D., Sonya Tuerff, M.D. and the dedicated sixth floor nursing staff.

We are forever grateful for the love and care Bruce received and are proud to pay tribute to his tremendous intellectual curiosity and affinity for education. He was truly an exceptional husband, father, son, brother, physician and colleague and is dearly missed. With this gift, his spirit and legacy live on.

The Healing Power of Home

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) first opened for business at 228 French St. in Wilmington, Delaware. In its first year, the staff of 12 public health nurses made 22,117 home visits across a service area that included 188,000 people.

By comparison, ChristianaCare HomeHealth caregivers made 219,091 home visits — in addition to virtual visits — in 2021 and logged more than 1 million miles of travel from Brandywine Hundred in New Castle County to Georgetown in Sussex County.

Today, Delaware has a population of nearly 1 million people. And the patients who seek out HomeHealth often have complicated health conditions that require caregivers to be able to work independently but also collaborate with others to provide optimal care for a patient.

219,091 ChristianaCare HomeHealth Caregiver visits

Elena Gomez, RN, has been a HomeHealth nurse for eight years. She values the opportunity to concentrate on one patient at a time and appreciates the team approach that HomeHealth caregivers use to meet patient needs.

“We have incredible caregivers,” said Gomez, who works in the Middletown area. “What I really like is that when patients fill out the surveys, they mention the whole team helped them to get better.”

The collaboration among HomeHealth caregivers made all the difference for Angelo Marinelli of Smyrna, who broke his right femur earlier this year during a fall at home.

After undergoing surgery and a stay at a rehab center, Marinelli headed home, where he received care from several HomeHealth caregivers, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses and aides. They helped him get back on his feet – literally – by working with him to walk using a walker and practice getting in the shower safely.

It was Angelo Marinelli’s care team that also recognized his wife needed help, too.

“They realized I was drowning,” said Barbara Marinelli, who was overwhelmed with full-time caregiving for her husband of 64 years. The team arranged for a HomeHealth aide to assist with some of his daily care activities.

“I don’t know what I would have done without ChristianaCare HomeHealth. Because of them, my husband has progressed to where he is now,” she said, noting that Angelo hopes to soon transition to a cane.

“You appreciate the professional, but you also recognize the personal impact they have on your family.”

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) first opened for business at 228 French St. in Wilmington, Delaware

“ChristianaCare is honored to have served our neighbors as trusted, expert partners in their care, and we are proud to continue our legacy of caring for our neighbors in the comfort of their homes.”

Employee Giving for Gratitude

Arvind Sabesan, M.D., first experienced working at ChristianaCare long before he had the initials M.D. next to his name. At 14 years old, he volunteered at Wilmington Hospital.

“I was able to get an early exposure to the hospital environment by volunteering in various departments throughout the hospital,” he said.

Since then, the Delaware native and resident has come to know the health system in many other ways.

“ChristianaCare has been a large part of my life,” said Dr. Sabesan. “My sisters were born at Wilmington Hospital. Many of my family members have been ChristianaCare patients and some were even treated for cancer at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

In addition, I completed my general surgery residency at ChristianaCare, mentored by Dr. Nicholas Petrelli [Bank of America endowed medical director at Graham Cancer Center].”

In July 2022, Dr. Sabesan joined the ChristianaCare staff as a surgical oncologist, working with Joseph Bennett, M.D., chief of Surgical Oncology, who mentored and trained him as a resident. He also recently assumed another new role with ChristianaCare: donor. Dr. Sabesan and his wife Richa Shah made a gift to support the Graham Cancer Center, dedicating a Multidisciplinary Care Room, where patients can conveniently meet all their doctors in one setting.

The room was dedicated to the “General Surgery Teaching Faculty.”

“This gift is our way of acknowledging the brilliant and supremely committed faculty at ChristianaCare,” Dr. Sabesan said.

“It’s a reflection of gratitude for an institution that has treated my family and others with compassion and cutting-edge care, and for the people who trained me and helped pave the way to where I am today.”

Turning Pain into Purpose

Gerret and Tatiana Copeland share ChristianaCare’s commitment to providing equitable access to the very best in breast care. Their visionary philanthropic investments include a generous gift to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute for breast cancer prevention and research for all women.

The couple recently joined Graham Cancer Center leadership to celebrate the naming of The Tatiana Copeland Breast Center.

“As longtime Graham Cancer Center supporters and as a breast cancer survivor myself who received wonderful treatment here, we are confident our investment in the Breast Center will continue to enable all women to receive the same care that I did,” said Tatiana, who also previously funded two 3D mammography units at the Graham Cancer Center.

“We hope our support inspires others to join us in the fight against cancer.”

According to the Delaware Division of Public Health, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in Delaware and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the state after lung cancer. Philanthropy like the Copelands makes a tremendous difference in the lives of women in and around Delaware.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden recognized Tatiana’s visionary investment in breast cancer care with a letter written to mark the Breast Center’s dedication:

“Tatiana is a woman with extraordinary vision and a compassionate heart. As a breast cancer survivor, she has taken her pain and turned it into purpose, ensuring that all those who come in for testing at the Breast Center will receive extraordinary care. She has put lifesaving and life-altering care within the reach of those who need it most. And through it all, she has pushed for progress, fought for patients and kept hope alive.”

The Gift of Love

Mary Ann and Edd Springer met at a high school dance more than 62 years ago. They married a few years later and were inseparable until Mary Ann passed away in 2021. During some of that time, Mary Ann was a stay-athome mom to the couple’s three sons. When the two eldest started school, she went back to school to earn a nursing degree.

“Mary Ann’s sister was an army nurse and always encouraged Mary Ann to go into nursing,” said Edd. “It was really a perfect fit. She loved caring for people and was terrific at it.”

Mary Ann worked as a ChristianaCare nurse for nearly three decades. “She loved being a part of the health system, and felt it was like a second family,” said Edd. “Then, a few years ago she was diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy, and ChristianaCare provided excellent care throughout her illness.”

The Springers were donors to ChristianaCare before Mary Ann became ill. When she was a patient, their regular giving took on new meaning.

“Mary Ann always wanted to help people and she did so in many ways: as a nurse, church volunteer, neighbor, friend, mother, and wife,” Edd said. “From her years of nursing at ChristianaCare and then as a patient, Mary Ann understood the importance of philanthropy and giving back.”

Today,Edd has his own personal experience as a patient. He is undergoing treatment for cancer at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute and gives to the center.

“There’s no question about it,” he said.

“It’s just the right thing to do to thank my caregivers for my great care and to honor Mary Ann’s memory.”

Power of Philanthropy | HEALTH EQUITY

ChristianaCare is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a $900,000 Congressional grant to implement a comprehensive “Food is Medicine” pilot program. The “Food is Medicine” program will help support pregnant women and their family members living in poor food environments, including communities most impacted by adverse social and environmental factors, like chronic disease and obesity. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons and U.S. Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester for their legislative support of this important initiative.

A Gift to a Loving Home

ChristianaCare’s Center for Special Healthcare Needs is a medical home for adults 18 and older with medical and social conditions that began in childhood and span a lifetime.

“We care for patients with complex diseases and conditions who are aging out of pediatric care,” said Charmaine Wright, M.D., MSHP, director of the Center for Special Health Care Needs.

One such condition is sickle cell disease, a group of inherited red blood cell disorders that affect hemoglobin (the protein that carries oxygen through the body). People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that are crescent or “sickle”-shaped. The cells don’t bend or move easily and can block blood through the body, leading to serious problems like stroke, infections and chronic pain.

“The Center’s Sickle Cell Program provides flexible, innovative and individualized team-based care for people with sickle cell,” said Dr. Wright. “Our goal is always to help them live their lives to the fullest.”

The William E. Proudford Sickle Cell Fund, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about sickle cell, is helping propel this goal. Announced last September at an event at ChristianaCare, the William E. and Rubye T. Proudford Sickle Cell Endowed Fund at the Center for Special Health Care Needs is designed to benefit patient care, research and education.

“It’s

critically important that patients have access to leading-edge care and compassionate care by providers who understand sickle cell and its overall impact on a person’s life,” said Karen Proudford, Ph.D., daughter of William and Rubye Proudford and president of the board of the Proudford Fund.

Sickle cell affects more than 100,000 people nationwide and disproportionately impacts people of African descent. The Center for Special Healthcare Needs’ Sickle Cell Program cares for hundreds of patients from across the Delaware region.

“The Proudford Fund’s generous investment in ChristianaCare supports our team of medical experts in their cutting-edge care for our patients,” Dr. Wright said. “And it doesn’t stop with our patients. The gift will enable us to educate other health care professionals about the disease and develop community programs that provide outreach to minority and underserved populations.”

The Proudford Fund will also support research, said Stephanie Guarino, M.D., MSHP, the Center’s clinical lead for the Sickle Cell Program. “With this gift, we also can continue our research to advance our knowledge and treatment of three specific types of the disease: sickle cell anemia, hemoglobin sickle cell disease, and hemoglobin sickle beta-thalassemia, a form of Cooley’s Anemia.”

Breast Cancer Screenings and Detection

The areas of breast health, fibroids, and cervical health are issues often overlooked or undertreated for women of color. Thanks to a generous grant award of $62,775 as part of Hologic’s Project Health Equity, ChristianaCare was able to expand its slate of cancer prevention outreach programs in Hispanic/Latinx communities during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Activities included presentations, panel discussions, referrals to primary and specialty care, scheduling mammograms and information tables featuring handouts and giveaways available in English and Spanish at local churches and community organizations, the Mexican Consulate and special events such as the Wilmington Hispanic Festival and Parade.

Longwood Foundation

Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) has a proven track record of reducing post-operative pain (due to minimal incision), accelerating one’s ability to resume daily activities (i.e., driving, lifting, working, exercising, etc.), and reducing the length of time spent in the hospital resulting in lower health care costs for the patient, hospital, and insurance payors. Thanks to a generous $400,000 grant from the Longwood Foundation, ChristianaCare was able to upgrade its fleet of robotic training simulators and consoles at its Newark Campus.

Wawa Foundation Breast Cancer Awareness Fund

ChristianaCare was among 40 local nonprofits to receive a grant award from the Wawa Foundation Breast Cancer Awareness Fund in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The $5,000 award helps to defray the cost of providing oncology patients and their families with a demonstrated financial need with the following support services: 1) stipends to pay for important and critical treatment services such as screenings, biopsies, chemotherapy, and follow up appointments; 2) preventative screenings such as mammograms and diagnostic tests that are critical to ensuring early detection and treatment of cancer; 3) stipends for transportation to/from chemotherapy/radiation appointments via public transit (or paratransit for patients with disabilities and mobility issues); and 4) instruction on food preparation steps to help patients conserve energy, sample recipes, and stipends to purchase fruits, vegetables, hydration and protein sources.

Renovations at the Maternal & Infant Center are Underway

The Maternal & Infant Center (MIC) will have a new look this summer. Redesigned with the needs of our patients, caregivers and visitors in mind, the workstations and suite of private labor and delivery rooms will feature a modern look with increased natural light, spacious waiting areas and an environment that allows women and their families to experience labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care in one suite for the duration of their stay – maximizing their comfort and overall patient experience.

The $1.8M investment has been offset in part by the generous philanthropic support of individuals and organizations as well as proceeds from the Blue Jean Ball held on November 6th at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, totaling more than $240,000. Thank you for making this important project possible!

If you would like to support the Maternal & Infant Center or other patient-focused projects at our ChristianaCare Union Hospital, please contact the Office of Philanthropy at 302.327.3305 or philanthropy@christianacare.org.
