Malindo Air’s Safety Campaign

Malindo Air celebrated its 3rd anniversary recently with a safety campaign week which was officially launched by Secretary General, Ministry of Transport, Datuk Seri Hj Saripuddin Bin Hj Kassim at the main terminal of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Also present to witness the launching ceremony were Managing Director of Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad, Datuk Mohd Badlisham Ghazali, accompanied by the CEO of Malindo Air, Mr Chandran Rama Muthy. The Ministry of Transport stated that it is committed to bring about change for the betterment of civil aviation in Malaysia, whereby making the workplace safe is also a joint responsibility of both the

employers and the staff. Thus, training the employees is the key to achieving a successful safety programme and management must be committed to make investments on safety aspects. While the government and its agencies provide the leadership, legislation and guidelines, it was reminded that it is the organisations which have to take the lead. As safety and health at work is every individual’s responsibility, it is very imperative for the employees to give fullest support to their employer’s effort. Malindo Air is very serious in complying with the safety and security standards set by the authorities. The airline obtained full marks from the stringent Civil Aviation and Safety Authority

of Australia (CASA) at a recent safety audit in Perth. In January this year, Malindo Air obtained the IATA Standard Safety Assessment (ISSA), a voluntary safety audit programme, which helps airline operators to conform to global safety standards and best practices. ISSA also introduces elements of a Safety Management System (SMS). The Safety Campaign Week programme that the airline embarked on will contribute to increased emphasis on improving safety management, and aligning Malindo Air with global best practices, ensuring a convenient and safe travel experience for travelers.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

an inspiration of the

east coast “Whatever Terengganu will be in the future, I will always try to paint her because she is a part of me” - Chang Fee Ming

If there is an unofficial artist laureate of a Malaysian State, it has to be Chang Fee Ming with his attachment to 13,000 square kilometres of the East Coast. Of this mighty total, it is the 240 kilometres of Terengganu coastline that fascinates him most. Like a migrating turtle, this is where he returns with unfailing regularity. He has travelled widely and his different series are an A to Z of globetrotting, from Mount Agung to Zanzibar. Despite continuously returning to his birthplace, Chang Fee Ming and his works are now in Kuala Lumpur. “Terengganu: Selaut Kasih, Sepantai Sayang” is a ma jor exhibition by this master of microcosm, with a theme firmly anchored in his home state. Never before has such 6 | MALINDOMAG

attention been given to the fishing communities that are integral to Terengganu and yet so frequently overlooked. He weaves visual stories around their lives, using textiles to an extent that cannot be matched by any other Malaysian artist. Textiles are the essence of aesthetics on the East Coast as well as being the subject that has won him countless admirers. Far from being a seeker of superficiality, he is a detailed chronicler of his own world – a setting where the sea meets the land, and people fit in somewhere in between. With 70 paintings from more than 30 collections, accompanied by seldom seen sketches, this is an exhibition of unparalleled size and presence. Here in Kuala Lumpur, far removed from the source of his inspiration, the artist and curators have drawn us into a world that is alien even to most of their fellow citizens. The Terengganu coast and its communities are fully explored, winning him even more admirers from among those who seek social commentary as well as a visual fiesta.

Born in Terengganu, Malaysia in 1959, Chang Fee Ming is a self-taught artist who began his career in the early 1980s. Since then, he has become one of Asia’s most highly regarded artists working with water colour. His works are acclaimed-exhibited and collected throughout the world, and have appeared regularly at auction at Christie’s and Sotheby’s since 1995. For over 20 years, Chang Fee Ming’s subject has been the people and places of Southeast Asia, portrayed through an extraordinary grasp of texture and light, as well as vibrancy of colour and composition. His works are suffused with pathos as well as beauty. He has also portrayed life and culture in places as diverse as China, India and the east coast of Africa. He is currently based in Kuala Terengganu, although he returns frequently to Bali, his second home. He spends much of his time traveling through Asia. In his own words: “To travel and see and paint is for me a way of learning, part of my life philosophy”.

A Memorable

Treat by Kalpana Devasagayam

With Mother’s Day approaching, most children, young and adults, may be wandering or already planning on how they could make this special day a memorable one for their respective ‘first lady’. In conjunction with this time of the year, is also when schools will organise craft making sessions for the excited younger ones; service industries, restaurants, hotels and merchandise outlets will take the opportunity to offer packaged promotions catered in the best interest of mothers, and needless to say florists will top it all with some of the best blooms of the season knowing the exceptional demand on this significant occasion.

8 | MALINDOMAG

You should know by now that under any circumstances, anything that you choose to get your mother will definitely be precious to her and she will appreciate it with all her heart. Although in some cases, for the tough moms that they are, they may not express it in the way that you expect nor will they externally show how delighted they actually are. But never be disheartened as often they do feel the same sense of gratitude as you, when you intended a treat for her. Having said that, MalindoMAG have put together some interesting gift ideas of the season that you could surprise

all deserving mothers. And if the day has passed and perhaps you happen to overlook it due to your hectic routine, it is never too late! In fact, it may come in as a bigger unexpected surprise for the special angel who moulded and guided you or your off-springs against all odds.

A holiday escapade This usually is the ultimate best treat any mother could ask for. Not only do they get to take time off from their daily routines, but they get to enjoy an exciting time ahead and away from their nest where they can be ensured of an off-duty period. A getaway as such could simply be a carefree day trip or a short two to three days trip to a destination that you believe would be to her liking. For example, shopping haven in places like Bangkok, or for a more rejuvenating time to the serene islands as Langkawi and Bali, or if your mum is someone who simply enjoys food, then Penang will be the ultimate place for a food trail to satisfy her cravings, and enjoy something besides her own cooking for a change! Of course, the longer the holiday is, the happier the mother could be. However, if it is a surprise plan, it is best to be aware of her possible commitments for the travel dates.

10 | MALINDOMAG

Optionally, if there is limited time, a one night stay in a fairly good hotel with a special meal and quality time with loved ones is also equally ideal. If the Mother’s Day weekend is not possible, simply purchase your holiday package or flight tickets for a later date that you believe will be more appropriate. You may then Image courtesy of Naturally Langkawi

surprise her by inserting the holiday itinerary in an envelope and place it on her pillow or kitchen counter or anywhere else that is visible to her sight. You can be assured that this will result either in an exciting screech or with tears of pure gratitude.

An off-duty weekend Well if a holiday is not something to consider for the moment, then the next best thing we could offer the queen of our hearts is a weekend off. The everyday routine of a mother could be pretty tiring, and when they finally get the luxury of time to catch up on their own interest or just put the feet up to relax, it is something they would extremely be grateful for. Few incentives to throw in for this special treat are special meals either homemade, ordered in or simply take her out for her

favourite meals on this special day. It does not to need to be all that fancy. Perhaps you can look into those old time favourites that she used to favour in her younger days. Sometimes the simple things in life are often the best. Another special thing you could arrange as part of this treat is maid services, if you do not already have

one. There are numerous agencies offering this service these days. Just get on the search engine online and you are sure to come across this service near you. This not only gets the house made up for the special occasion, but mother dearest gets the opportunity to have some peaceful rest that she truly deserves.

certainly. An accessory or simple piece of jewellery that she may need to complement her favourite outfit will be good enough. You will best know her preference. Otherwise, observe her current accessories to give you a brief idea on what you could look for.

Arts & Crafts If your mother is fond of antiques or artistic materials, then look no further. A piece of art or craft should be great to add on to her collection. Receiving a handmade art or craft from the younger ones is often greatly appreciated especially when they express the sweetest and most meaningful words or visuals in cards or their craft. Kids do have a pretty creative imagination, and their expressions could be surprisingly impressive. So meet regularly, this is the best time to pay her an unexpected visit. Of course it will be best complemented with the presence of your family or kids, and a little souvenir that she is sure to be delighted with.

if you are a father or guardian, do encourage and guide the little ones in doing something special for their mother.

Bonding activities Quality time is often associated with activities done together. Some people say, ‘a family who plays together, sticks together’. So similarly make this an opportunity to plan an outing or maybe a commitment to a periodical activity that both you and your mother can

do together. These can include from a simple movie, to yoga, dance or music lessons, some exciting adrenaline pumping activity that some mothers would enjoy but never got around doing it, or simply a self-pampering session of spa!

Well if you are one of those who always planned something special on this occasion, you deserve a pat on the back. On the other hand, if you are not, then make this your first significant year. Some may not be comfortable to express affection through treats as these, especially if it was never a family practice. But there is always a first time for something, and its best to do something for the ‘first woman’ of our lives while we still can. You will be surprised to learn that the process can actually be quite thrilling and contenting at the same time. And if you are leaving abroad and away from mummy dearest, you can still make the occasion as special by making arrangements through friends or family, or simply do it online. Everything is possible in today’s technological era with advance services. Remember, it is always better to be late than never, and it is really the thought that matters in the end.

CAREER IN AVIATION

Finding the

Executive Assistant to Malindo Air’s CEO, Andrea Liong, 39, is a busy but undeniably a pleasant lady to be acquainted with. Besides having a challenging and fulfilling career, she is also a mother of two adorable girls age four and three. Family has always been her first priority. The experience of motherhood is one of her greatest accomplishment as she personally believes moulding young lives is far more challenging, but simultaneously rewarding than any other role she has been in. In conjunction with Mother’s Day, MalindoMAG is very honoured to have Andrea share her personal moving experience with the readers on her journey as a determined working mother.

14 | MALINDOMAG

CAREER IN AVIATION

Her second daughter was born prematured at six and half months and was being monitored in the incubator for four months. That was by far the most trying time for Andrea, and family. The situation was considered a rare case in Malaysia as there were no prior indications during regular checkups nor was there a reason to justify it upon delivery. Nevertheless, being a strong willed woman she is, she was motivated to give all the care and attention that her second baby needed. Her faith and strength throughout this period was fruitful. Today, her second daughter is a perfectly healthy and happy child. This inspired Andrea to further appreciate everything in her life and not take things for granted. Understanding that life has its unexpected ups and downs, prioritising is also something she learned along the way. Coming from a Marketing and Communication background, Andrea has ventured into many industries from Education, Beauty, e-Commerce/Recruitment to Banking and finall y to the Aviation industry.

“It is absolutely challenging for any mother to watch their new-born’s healing process, also considering that we have to recover from the delivery process ourselves. But the utter relief and joy of seeing my baby growing up healthily was well worth all the patience and perseverance I had to go through”. Q : Tell us about your role as an Executive Assistant to CEO. I have been in Marketing Communication for most of my career life and I am blessed with the current opportunity whereby I get to handle projects and initiatives from a slightly different perspective. My job involves doing multiple tasks. These include making inquiries for crucial problem-solving, business proposals and handling special projects. I started my first job from an entry level position till l reached this current position today. Q : How do you balance a corporate career and a family? To me, the key is to prioritise. At different situation and timing, we need to weigh what is important and get it sorted out accordingly. I also get a lot of support from my family and I personally think that it is really significant to have such support as it is impossible to do everything by myself. Besides that, I have an understanding superior to also guide me whenever needed. Q : If you could turn back the time, would you have done anything differently? I cherish every journey I have taken till today. I believe it is about how we handle situations and make things meaningful. After all, it is the experience that makes us what we have become today and I have no regrets. Q : What are the pros and cons of your job? It is definitely the exposure that I get from my job. I learn a lot of new things and get to know how the business works, as in this

industry the safety and efficiency of the business is very important. I also get to meet a lot of interesting people and acquire new knowledge. Like any other role, my job certainly comes with challenges and intense situations. But keeping my mind focused on promptly solving the situation rather than dwelling on it emotionally, has greatly aided me in overcoming tough situations. Q : Who is your role model or what is your motivational factor to your success today? I am blessed with a lot of great people in both my work and personal life. The motivating factor is understanding every breath we take is precious and we should never stop improving. Life is a continuous learning curve. Q : What is your advice to aspiring career woman who also juggles motherhood? Get help whenever it is needed either from your family or at work. Women are rewarded with utmost emotional strength and multitasking abilities. But that is not a reason to prove that we are superwomen. Stay focused on your duties, speak of your needs and never jeopardise your health at the expense of anything. If only you are fit and healthy, will you be able to take care of your family. Q : In your opinion, what’s more challenging? Being a mother or a career woman? Both are equally challenging as both requires high level of attention, patience, creativity and leadership skills, only under different circumstances. They are roles that could never be compared. Buy travel insurance It would seem that you could save the money for shopping instead of buying a travel insurance plan but mind you, if a problem does arise, the costs can be crippling. Hospitalisation costs in Southeast Asia can easily exceed RM3,200 per day. Prices start from just RM15 for trips within Malaysia and RM21 for trips outside of Malaysia. Standard benefits include baggage protection, travel delays and overseas medical expenses. 3. Passport and important documents Ensure that your passport is in good condition (e.g. lamination is intact, pages are not torn or missing) 20 | MALINDOMAG

before departure. A passport, which appears to have been tampered with, could cause you a great deal of inconvenience at a foreign airport, including refusal of entry. Take all necessary precautions to safeguard your passport and other identification documents, travel tickets, money, travellers’ cheques, credit cards and insurance documents. As a safeguard, try not to carry these items together. There is a risk of them being left, hence leaving you entirely without identification and funds in case of theft or loss. Leave a copy of your documentation at home with a family member or friend and make sure someone knows your itinerary. 4. Money Get enough local currency before you leave for your destination, as this will often get you the most for your hard earned dollars. Keep your credit card for high cost purchases. To keep your travel money safe on holiday, it is worth carrying a waist bag or pouch underneath your clothes, but put aside some money separately so that you do not need to draw attention to it too often. Many hotels will also have a safelock in which you can keep deposit your passports and cash. If money and valuables are stolen you will

need to make a report at the local police station. ACE Assistance will be able to guide you through this process. Make sure you have sufficient funds to last you during your stay. Some countries will require you to prove that you have the financial means to support you and your family whilst you are overseas. 5. Medication Carry your medication in your hand luggage as your check-in bags could be delayed or even lost. Make sure you have sufficient medication to last for the duration of your trip. Visit your doctor before you travel and if you are going far, travel vaccines may be necessary. Your doctor will be able to advise the vaccinations needed for your destination. 6. Last but not least Make sure you have durable, easily visible luggage tags on every item. Just remember, if your luggage tags have your address on them, then, carry your house keys separately. With all of these preparations done, all you have left to do is relax and enjoy yourself. Have a pleasurable trip!

Beaufort to Tenom: A Railway Adventure Text & images by: Azuan A Zahdi

Mentioning Tenom as a destination for a weekend getaway will most likely be met with slightly confused expressions. Old towns like Beaufort and Tenom are not really common on a tourist map but it have its own charms waiting to be discovered. In Tenom for example, the Sabah Agriculture Park and coffee factories are among the places worth exploring. The main attraction however is the journey between these two towns

24 | MALINDOMAG

itself. Kota Kinabalu is the gateway to Beaufort whereby the town is accessible through a 90-minute drive. Connecting Beaufort to Tenom is a service by Sabah State Railway that is known as one of the most unique train routes still operating in Malaysia. This is a train ride that creates a memorable experience with a blend of scenic views of rainforest and river, friendly locals and the thrill of being onboard an “antique train.

and goods while those with seats consist of very basic ones. However it does not take long before the initial shock settles. This is partly due to the locals’ ability to quickly break the ice with tourist-looking passengers. It usually starts with a generous smile followed with a common advice for visitors to seat on the right side of the train to enjoy the best view.

The adventure begins in Beaufort Train Station where the sight of an old engine such as a ma jestic 1971 Kawasaki Diesel Engine can be seen at the platform minutes before the scheduled departure time. Do not miss to see reactions of visitors the moment they see how classic the train and coaches are from the outside. It is far different from the usual modern electric trains that are common in many countries these days.

26 | MALINDOMAG

Passengers on this route are mainly locals on their daily routine and tourists on their way to Pangi Station for white water rafting activities along the Padas River. The interior of the train is nothing fancy and once again seeing the reaction of first-timers boarding the train is priceless. Some of the coaches do not even have seats as it is being used to transport both passengers

The view is indeed amazing. The moment the train leaves Beaufort, the sight of shops built on woodenstilt quickly fades away and is slowly replaced by view of lush jungle hills on the left side and rushing river rapids of Padas River on the other side. This is when most of the passengers start to pop their heads out of the window, enjoying both the view and natural breeze. As the train goes deeper into the rural area of Sabah, mobile phones start to lose signals and random strangers begin chatting with each other on various topics from serious current affairs to juicy entertainment gossips. From time to time, view of simple wooden houses can be seen and sometimes

WANDERLUST SABAH

the villagers especially children will run towards the train and wave to the passengers on-board. It is also normal for the locals to flag the train down for them to get in. The train makes four official stops at main stations namely Saliwangan, Halogilat, Rayoh and Pangi before reaching Tenom but there are many small platforms which allow the train to drop and pick-up passengers and goods closer to their homes. At Halogilat Station, passengers are requested to board into a different diesel locomotive with only two coaches as the final stretch to Tenom requires a lighter train to tackle the winding rail tracks that run parallel along Padas River. At

certain times, the river feels so close that it is very tempting to just jump into the river. For a ticket price of just RM2.70, the one way journey that takes about three hours in total is definitely worth much more in terms of experience. Opportunity to interact with locals, breathtaking views along the route and the chance to board on an old train is valid enough reasons to try this off-the-beaten path attraction for at least once. For those who wants additional adrenaline rush, couple this train ride with a 1-hour white water rafting experience along Padas River for a complete thrilling adventure!

Malaysia prides in its food heritage and if you are looking for the best place in Perth, Western Australia to enjoy Malaysian delicacies, just head over to Hawker’s Cuisine in Northbridge. 32 | MALINDOMAG

Loved by locals and tourists alike, in the ten years since it opened its doors, Hawker’s Cuisine has become the must-go place in Perth for affordable authentic Malaysian food. Hawker’s Cuisine was established back in 2006 to address the lack of Malaysian food in Perth. On the lookout for a bigger space, the restaurant found its home on 40 Francis Street, just off William Street in Northbridge, in 2014.

Today, it is a popular hangout for Malaysian food lovers and its’ open from Tuesdays to Sundays, from 5pm till late. Known for its extensive menu of top quality Malaysian and Chinese cuisine, the restaurant has a range of must try signature dishes. for everyone to tickle their taste buds. If you are in the area, you might also like to try another Malaysian eatery called Old Lane Street Eats. From the team behind Hawker’s Cuisine, Old Lane Street Eats is a welcome new addition to the Asian food scene in Northbridge, having just opened its doors to the public in April. Both the eateries have become quite popular now that it is pretty

normal to have a short wait for a table. But do not worry, the tables are turned over quickly, meaning visitors don not have to wait too long to tuck into their mouth-watering array of tasty Malaysian hawker food. Located where Hawker’s once stood, at 68 Roe Street, Old Lane Street Eats is on a mission to bring affordable street style Asian delicacy to the people of Perth. Here you will be able to enjoy some of the best street style food. Some of the favourites are Fruit Rojak, Mee Goreng Mamak, Bak Kwa Bun and the famous Penang Fried Kway Teow.

Nikanti Clubhouse

By Paul Myers and Golf Malaysia Text & images courtesy of Golf Malaysia

Thailand’s newest and most exotic golf club called Nikanti, offers golfers an unforgettable and unique golfing experience. Named after an ancient Sanskrit word, Nikanti roughl y means “the last step before enlightenment”. So, with that in mind, the club offers Golfers, a paradise with beautiful natural sceneries and services that matches any worldclass golf course.

pay your green fee, there is no extra charge to pay and it even includes food, drinks and your caddie tip. The golf course is also unique and consists of three six-hole layouts rather than the usual two nines. Nikanti’s unique format comprises three six-hole loops, each with two par-3, two par-4 and two par-5 holes. It is touted to be one of its kind in Asia and in the world. The combination adds up to a par72 with 18-hole golf course. Golfers are given a different type of experience, offering more scoring chances than a traditional layout with 10 (usually tough) par-4 holes. There is a lot more to Nikanti than what meets the eye. The scenic golf course is a well-planned layout with abundant water features that offers more risk and reward options than any other 18-hole courses. Nikanti also comes with a stunning six-star modern clubhouse with exquisite dining experiences that will win any architectural and interior design awards. Offering a scenic view over the course, it features the most modern and state-of-the-art lounges, restaurant and locker room facilities to any golf course in Asia. Indulge in either six or ninecourse set menus that have been created to feature the many flavourful Thai cuisine.

Another interesting feature about Nikanti, is their mode of operation whereby the golf course is opened to the public. There are no current plans to offer memberships. “We want people to really enjoy the course and feel as close to golfing enlightenment as possible,” says Nikanti Managing Director Khun Nick Sasomsub. Located near Nakhon Pathom, 50 kilometres west of Bangkok, Nikanti is designed by Pirapon Namatra after careful consideration to incorporate the area’s natural rolling terrain and environment.

He is also responsible for Bangsai near Bangkok and Banyan at Hua Hin. “I was given the task of doing something different and unique when I took on the design challenge at Nikanti, says the famous Designer, Pirapon. “At first glance, you probably think where to hit your golf balls. But once you play the course and realise there are ample landing areas, it’s not such a challenge. You just have to think your way around, which is what we set out to achieve.” With its unique set-up, players can start their round at either the first, seventh or 13th hole. Khun also mentions that, “Nikanti is more than golf. It’s a whole experience of lifestyle, whereby one can golf, dine at the best Thai delicacies or unwind with a drink. We also have meeting facilities for conducting business and lounges for discussion or leisure”. If you are in Bangkok, swing by to Nikanti for a wholesome experience of golfing and leisure.

Dear Malindo Air, I flew from Subang to Penang on 19th May 19:05 flight. Soon as I stepped on the plane I had this familiar sick feeling and couldn’t step forward; I have claustrophobia. I told flight attendant Dina (not sure correct spelling) and she was the most comforting I’ve ever experienced. She told me I could stand with her till just as it was necessary to be seated and she chatted with me to take my mind off my fear. Then she found me two empty seats and told me I could sit there since I was the last passenger to be seated. Throughout the flight Dina checked on me and made sure I was alright. I’ve flown many times with different airlines and have never felt so comfortable. I didn’t have the chance to personally thank her for being so wonderful as I was rushing off the plane. Please convery my appreciation to Dina and kudos to you guys for having such great service! Keira (Malaysia)

Took a one-way economy flight from KUL-DPS. Check-in at klia2 was swift, but I did check-in online the day before as well. Boarding call followed on time and our flight left KUL 10 minutes late, but we arrived on-time in Bali. Overall, it was a nice flight experience with a 32-inch seat pitch which was incredibly comfortable for a tall person like me. Seat reclines and comes with in-flight entertainment and various selection to entertain self. They even offer a USB connection, which is only available in Business Class. Free meal service was only crackers and water and other meals and drinks were available for charge. Would definitely book with Malindo Air again! R. Pertler (Indonesia)

I flew from Bangladesh to Thailand via Malaysia. They canceled the outward leg on the day of travel and then the return leg. I had to make my own way to another airport next day (7 hours by bus). On the way back, they helped me get an internal flight to my destination airport and a hotel overnight as I had to wait. These cancellations are regular. The aircraft they operate are really nice with professional staff. Food was great with inflight entertainment to keep you occupied. One more nice feature is that you can charge from a USB socket in your entertainment console. Though it was a hassle in the beginning, but the flight experience made it all worthwhile. Kenneally (Bangladesh)

My trip was a breeze! Staff were so friendly, they were so helpful in assisting to make my flight experience comfortable. The IFE had a good selection of movies and it was entertaining seeing that it was a 2.5 hour flight. Lastly, the food and beverages had a good selection to choose from. Well done, Malindo Air! Two-thumbs up from me!

KUL-DEL on economy and DEL-KUL on business. Overall a good flight although I think the economy seats are great in terms of legroom with comfortable chairs. Food choices aren’t great on economy as expected due to budget airline but flight attendants are extremely warm and helpful, making my flight pleasant and totally enjoyable. Nurul (Malaysia)
