Exploring the roots of

SYDNEY By Lesley Lee Photos by Destination NSW

When you fly in to Sydney International Airport, you will be landing where the first European settlers landed, which is Botany Bay. As the site was found to be less substancial for a permanent settlement, the location of modern Sydney was identified to be more ideal for building a town. There was fresh water and soil substancial for harvesting vegetables and fruits to support the small population. As the population grew, Sydney town expanded and while some of the roads are straight with regular cross streets, many follow the lie of the land. This makes Sydney a great place to go walking. But make sure to have a map in hand or clear directions. If your goal is to explore the city, then stay somewhere central. There is good accommodation available in the Central Business District (CBD) for all budgets, especially if you book early. Staying central lets you start your discoveries early and also makes it easier to have a rest in between trips. Even a two or three day stay allows you to explore extensively if you are located at the right spot.

“The Opera House sails are lit for various events, most well known of which is the annual three week Vivid Sydney Celebration.” The Powerhouse Museum started life as a power station. However, as the city grew, the site really was not suitable for what used to be quite a dirty industry and the power generation was moved, leaving the beautiful brick buildings empty. The buildings are currently home to an impressive collection of ingenious inventions, historical displays of life in developing New South Wales and even some large displays. These large displays include a spacecraft, trains and the pre-electronic timetable from Sydney’s Central Station. Do not forget to try a ride on the penny farthing bicycle. It is fixed in place, you will not fall off! But rechecking before you visit as there are moves to relocate the museum and re-purpose the building. Wander around The Rocks area, where you can see some of the city’s oldest buildings and where you will find the entrance to the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. Book beforehand. For a real treat,

try a sunrise or sunset climb. The Opera House dominates the Harbour skyline, so a visit is a definite ‘must do’. Whether you go to a concert, join a tour of the building, have a meal in one of the restaurants or just enjoy the building from the outside, it is a treat. The Opera House sails are lit for various events, most well known of which is the annual three week Vivid Sydney Celebration, held annually in May/June. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair will also give you a wonderful view of the harbour. The chair was carved out of the sandstone by convicts in 1810. You can walk through parkland to the water all the way from Hyde Park. Start at the Anzac Memorial at the southern end of the Top: Large displays at The Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo Left: A Kaleidoscopic Tale light installation illuminating the ferris wheel at the Luna Park precinct during Vivid Sydney 2019.

park near Liverpool St. After looking around the war memorial, walk north through the park. Detour at Park St to visit the Australian Museum on the corner of Park and College Streets. Or you can continue to the Archibald Fountain and the northern end of the park, over Park St. To your right, you will see the magnificent St Mary’s Cathedral, well known for the beautiful light display on its walls on Christmas Eve. Stop by the old Sydney Hospital, the Old Mint or the Sydney Art Gallery. For a different view of the Opera House and the city, why not try a ferry ride. Short ones you can try include those to Luna Park or Cremorne Point if you want that perfect photo opportunity. From Cremorne Point, there is a park and great views back to the Opera House Bridge and city. Catch the

Get off at Jeffrey Street Wharf, North Sydney, it’s about 500m from Luna Park & North Sydney Olympic pool, and 700m from the Sydney Harbour Bridge walkway. If you want to catch the train, Luna Park is a three minute walk from Milsons Point train station. The trains leave to/from Central, Town Hall and Wynyard every five minutes during peak time. lifesavers. If the weather’s good, a walk round the path to nearby Bronte beach is popular. Whether you choose to walk, or go for a swim, or just thinking about exercise makes you hungry, you need not worry. Well known restaurateur and writer Bill Granger has one of his three Sydney restaurants a short walk from the beach. Not surprisingly, it’s called ‘bill’s at Bondi’ and yes, with a small ‘b’. Go for Saturday brunch, though they’re often really busy. If you’re lucky it should only be only a short wait for a table for four even if you haven’t made a booking. The menu will tempt you to try one of everything, but if you’re a small group, make sure you share ‘tastes’. Our group voted the Ricotta pancake ‘definitely to die for’, good enough to make a return trip to Sydney for the experience. The ‘crispy salmon belly and green mango salad’ is also a must try. They also do breakfast and dinner. With great service, excellent coffee, delicious food in a casual, friendly atmosphere, bill’s was a great taste of Sydney.

Hanoi : The ideal Indochina Getaway By Shah Shamshiri

Beckoning visitors from all over the world, Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi continues to enthrall the curious and seekers of old Asian charm. Situated in the northern bit of the country, Hanoi currently stands as the second largest Vietnamese city by population. According to Wikipedia, the population total was 7.7 million in 2015 and continues to grow along with the rapid progress of the city. Conquered by the French in 1873, it became the administrative centre of the colony of French Indochina. And like all former French colonies, the city was given a French ‘make-over’ when the colonisers built a modern administrative city south of Old Hanoi, creating broad, perpendicular tree-lined avenues of opera, churches, public buildings, and luxury villas. These changes have turned Hanoi into the popular tourist haunt it is today, attracting thousands each year. And if you have just a few days to spare, Hanoi may just be the place for a quick extended weekend getaway. Demanding a flight time of about three hours from Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi’s Noi Ba International Airport greets international visitors with a seamless arrival process, bearing friendly immigration officers and helpful locals at hand. And to kickstart a tour of Hanoi, it is best to begin by exploring the Old Quarter of the city situated about 30 minutes from the airport. With the convenience of ride-hailing applications like Grab, drivers can easily pick up passengers at the arrival gate without any hassle. Within half an hour, first-time visitors should be able to see the myriad of colours that make up the Old Quarter of Hanoi. From street vendors selling food and drinks, to motorcycles filling up the streets and sidewalks along with trishaws and rickshaws, the old city truly depicts a glimpse of what could have been the original Hanoi from yesteryears. Take a walk within the streets of old Hanoi and you will see flourishing businesses housed in the old buildings surrounding the city. Apart from the usual shops and cafes which Hanoi is famous for, the Old Quarter is also home to countless new age boutique hotels offering unique, attractive and affordable lodgings and other services. The pulse or heart of the old city is said to begin at the Hoan Kiem

Lake where locals usually flock to hang out during the evenings of most weekends. Naturally it is also where most tourists go to take pictures of the buildings and cafes circling the lake. Several restaurants around the area also provide a nice view of the lake after sunset. Right next to the lake is also the famous Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, which stages the world renowned one-of-a-kind water puppet show. The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi has its roots in an art form that dates back to the 11th century. The tradition of water puppet theatre stems from a time when rice paddy fields were flooded and villagers would make entertainment by standing in the waist-deep water with the puppets performing over the water. Using large rods to support the puppets it appeared as if they were moving across the water with the puppeteers hidden behind a screen. This tradition is unique to North Vietnam but has recently found fame on stages all over the world; so it’s a rare treat to see the puppets perform in their original location at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. Performances are accompanied by a Vietnamese orchestra playing traditional music using drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals. After an entertaining evening of puppets and music, be sure to check out Hanoi’s famous night market which is held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It runs through the Old Quarter district from 7pm, starting from Hang Dao Street and goes all the way north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market. Here you can find all sorts of items, from clothes to food and drinks, as well as various souvenirs consisting of local handicraft products. If you wish to buy other goods like Vietnam’s famous cashew nuts, lotus or waterlily seeds and even dried fruits, then be sure to visit Dong Xuan Market which is also the main market of Hanoi. Apart from food items, it is also famous for clothing material that are sold according to the requests of customers. Cloths wielding a million colours

can be found here to make an assortment of garments for both men and women. For those who just love the idea of chilling by the street and find pleasure in peoplewatching, then head over to Bia Hoi Junction. This junction in the centre of the Old Quarter is the place to be with friends in the late evenings. Foreigners and locals alike spend time here drinking and socializing while ‘checking out’ people as they pass by this busy street filled with several shophouses turned mini bars and cafes with plastic stools spilling out onto the streets. Most of the shops are opened throughout the day and late into the night. Be sure to try out their famous local delicacies such as the ever popular Vietnamese spring roll and of course Pho, traditional rice noodle soup cooked with different types of meat. And another favourite is Chả Cá Thăng Long, the celebrated fried fish with tumeric and dill, which is prepared in front of restaurant guests in a special wok. And coffee lovers, don not forget to also try out their local Vietnamese coffee which is globally renowned to be one of the best! (For our Muslim friends, there are a few Halal restaurants in Hanoi that serve these delicious meals) Another must-visit site of Hanoi is the famous Hanoi ‘train street’ where an active train track in the Old Quarter has become the most popular selfie destination in Vietnam’s capital. The street which runs along this active train track sees several cafes allowing seats to be placed even on the train tracks for patrons to immortalize their moments in pictures on their cameras and mobile phones. These small chairs and tables are removed when the train approaches and

are placed back in their original positions after the train leaves the street. The walls of the shops surrounding this train track are decorated with all sorts of paintings making it an ‘insta-worthy’ spot for many visitors. Other places worth a visit would be the French Quarter where old buildings from the days of French Vietnam are preserved with the main Hanoi Opera House standing as a legacy of this colourful past. The Opera House’s architecture also bears a striking resemblance to that of the Parisian Opera House where it was modelled after. In fact, it was modelled after the Palais Garnier, the older of Paris’s two opera houses, and is considered to be one of the architectural landmarks of Hanoi. Being the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is also seeing rapid development with the new city taking centre stage, away from the Old Quarter. The new part of Hanoi shows a more contemporary landscape with tall

high-rise buildings and shopping malls slowly congregating the large spaces found around the area. It is also complemented with the newly constructed Hanoi Metro, the city’s first internal train system set for operations this year. If you like malls and would like to purchase products by local Vietnamese fashion brands, be sure to check-out one of their biggest shopping malls, namely the Royal City Vincom Mega Mall or even the Lotte Shopping Mall. The Royal City Vincom Mall is also quite unique as the mall is built totally underground and the exterior above the mall flaunts a beautiful landscape with a large fountain and several renaissance-like statues around it. Truly, Hanoi is a beautiful city that blends old Asian charm and modernity. If you are ever in search of a city that preserves such balance so well, then this Vietnam capital must be on your bucket list!

Charming

Chengdu By Zeenee Coogan

A crowded teahouse with myriads of dialects, laughs and pleasant ambience. Food that is so spicy yet delicate that most Chinese people approach it with respect and hesitation. Chengdu is close to the Tibetan highlands, but stay here a few days and linger out of the metropolis, it will be well worth your time. China is massive, so despite how dramatically tourist arrivals have been spiking the past several years, it’s understandable why so many tours of the country stick to the well-trodden path: Beijing, Shanghai, and maybe, Guilin. But a trip southwest will prove there’s a whole new world waiting to be explored. To be sure, while Chengdu first earned its place on tourism maps as home to the cutest members of the Ursidae family, its appeal extends far beyond pandas. Think deliciously spicy cuisine, an eclectic cityscape, and a huge variety of destinations within day-trip distance. Plus, Chengdu is astonishingly laid-back, which is probably an adjective you never expected to hear in conjunction with the phrase “Chinese city of 14 million.” Most outsiders know little about Chengdu, and yet among the Chinese themselves this inland city enjoys a formidable reputation for its fiery hotpots, lively teahouses and Taoist temples. 24 | M ALIND OM AG | JULY 2 019

Peaceful vibes, hidden monasteries Chengdu feels immediately different from more ubiquitous Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai, despite the constant haze in the air, and the slim likelihood of finding someone outside of your hotel who speaks fluent English. Here, there is a relaxed skip in people’s step, and despite the rapidly increasing number of tall buildings, the rustling of gingko leaves seems to capture your attention more than any combination of steel and stone. What somehow separates Chengdu from much of the rest of China is its authenticity: a modern Zen Buddhist might not know how much he owes the monks of China’s only homegrown religion. Today they still practice meditation, tai chi (Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training, its health benefits and meditation) and tea ceremonies at the Temple of the Dark Ram, a time-honoured sanctuary for the most original and intriguing aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Which is not to say Chengdu’s manmade treasures aren’t as enjoyable as its natural ones, or that there isn’t tangible awesomeness here to match the delightful energy that surrounds you as you explore. Further north, Tianfu Square is slightly less well-known, and sits adjacent to lush People’s Park, whose modern design dates to the beginning of the Communist period, but whose origins date back to the days of the Qing Dynasty. If you want to step back in time, for example, head just northward from Chengdu’s central Tianfu Square to Wenshu Monastery, the best-preserved

Voyage / CHEN GDU

one in the city that’s also remarkably well-hidden within a residential neighbourhood. Tip: Outside of the Wenshu Monastery is the restored “old town”. Here you will find alleyways lined with shops serving delicious food and souvenir stands. There are also many tea houses along these streets. The next great foodie destination Sampling the famous Sichuan food is another must here. The hot and spicy dishes and varied tasty snacks are sure to whip up your appetite. All over the world, Chinese restaurants have been serving up “Szechuan Chicken” entrées for as far back as anyone can remember. Many of Sichuan’s most famous dishes will sound familiar, from Gong Bao Ji Ding (also known as Kung Pao Chicken) to Ma Po Tofu. The UNESCO City of Gastronomy and capital city of the Sichuan Province is in a class of its own. The best thing about eating in Chengdu is the hole-in-the-wall’s crowded with locals. Exploring Jinli Street, famous for its historic atmosphere and local snacks, is a must. Enjoy sticky rice cakes with sesame sauce, spicy chicken on a stick, sweet rice jelly, fried beef pancakes and, for the more adventurous, spicy rabbits’ heads. And ensure you sample hot pot, also. One of the country’s most renowned dishes, the communal pot of spiced broth that you dip your choice of ingredients into, is quite the experience. Tip: Don’t miss dine-and-dash favourites like spicy, savoury Dan Dan Noodles, but also consider treating yourself to one of the most sumptuous meals in the world: the 33-course extravaganza at Yu’s Family Kitchen, which features both Sichuan specialties and pan-Chinese classics like Peking Duck.

least as awesome, especially given the rapid expansion of China’s high-speed rail network. Take a day trip to the aweinspiring Leshan Giant Buddha or scale the summits of Emei Shan and Mount Qingcheng, which is known as the birthplace of Taoism. Chengdu is also a great precursor to Chongqing, an even less-discovered city that was also part of Sichuan province before its population exploded to more than 40 million. Jiuzhaigou Valley too has enjoyed international fame for decades for its colourful lakes, unique mountainous structures, and minority culture. Upon entering, you will find yourself in a fairyland, leaving behind nothing but earthly troubles and vexations. It is a world of flowing water, giving the valley its most enchanting views. Tip: Chengdu is in a basin with mountains around it. Therefore, it experiences quite a hot and humid summer compared to the mountainous areas around it. Much of the famous scenic attractions are in the northern part of Sichuan at very high altitudes, so here the weather will be quite different from Chengdu. You will have cool temperatures even in the summer at high altitude places like Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong and the winters there are extreme.

Break out of the usual China travel bubble and you will discover new cuisine, laid-back charm, breath taking scenery, and so much more in this interesting city of Sichuan. The Peranakan: Authentic Peranakan Flavour

Located in The Peranakan Gallery, as the gallery’s adjoining restaurant, The Peranakan is the only Peranakan restaurant along the Orchard road belt in Singapore and the only restaurant to serve a ‘Tok Panjang’ – a grand Peranakan feast, once served at the turn of the century, by wealthy Straits families to mark special occasions like weddings, anniversaries and important birthdays. Executive Chef Raymond Khoo and his team serve three generations of delicious ‘mesti-cuba’ (must-try) Peranakan recipes, including “Kueh Pie Ti” (Top Hats) and “Ngoh Hiang” (meat rolls), lovingly handed down by the Nonyas and Babas in his family, now brought to your table. They also offer a six course degustation menu and a Chef’s Table Set Menu alongside their regular Ala carte menu. The elaborate 20-seater Tok Panjang table set with exquisitely-crafted Nyonya ceramics, Chinese porcelain and Waterford crystalware; a nod to the Malay, Mandarin and European influences beloved by the Peranakans and assimilated into their aesthetic. The Peranakan, is able to serve up an authentic Tok Panjang feast comprising over 12 signature items at the table If you like to bring the experience home, some of the celebrated nonya cakes and desserts are available at the Takeaway Counter. According to Raymond, The Peranakan Gallery’s main exhibit centers around the Tok Panjang table, as a celebration of Singapore’s Straits Chinese way of life, created to transport visitors to the golden age of Peranakan heritage through an experience that is visually captivating and highly-immersive. They hope the gallery inspires each visitor to discover more about our unique hybrid culture that embraces East and West, and to be an active advocate for all things Peranakan. Their efforts in encouraging people to participate in and promote Singapore’s Peranakan culture stems from a passion to preserve our ancestral heritage for generations to come. The Peranakan Gallery is open daily from 11am to 10pm and is conveniently located at Level 2 of Claymore Connect Mall in Orchard Road, Singapore.
