President’s Message I am pleased to present to you my accomplishment for the years 2013–2017. The past 4 years have presented both challenges and opportunities for Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU). During this time frame, AAMU has transitioned from being led by the strategic plan entitled “Focus 2015 - Blueprints to Excellence” to the newly implemented “Strategic Plan 2015 – 2025: Into the Future”. These accomplishments throughout these past four years reflect AAMU’s continued commitment to academic excellence in meeting the changing needs of the students we serve and lays the foundation for a future that will take us to new heights. This is an exciting time as I reflect back on all of the amazing and wonderful things that have happened here on “Normal’s Hill.” AAMU continues to provide an enriching student-centered learning environment and extend her reach into the state and the region in which she serves.

Alabama A&M University, as other institutions of higher education throughout the nation, has had to wrestle with providing quality education programs in the face of relatively flat financial support for education from the state. In FY 2014, AAMU was operating with a $40.2 million budget from the State of Alabama and in FY 2017 AAMU was provided $41.2 million. In four years, AAMU has continued to increase enrollment, increase the number of degree offerings, and provide quality instructors and researchers with only an average of 1% ($400,000) per year in the midst of an increase of mandatory costs such as retirement, healthcare.

AAMU is committed to access and opportunity and providing knowledge and excellence in teaching, cutting edge research and service. We offer 42 contemporary baccalaureate, 19 master’s, one educational specialist and four doctoral level degrees that prepare our students for careers in the arts, sciences, business, engineering, education, agriculture and technology. We are a Center of Excellence that is dedicated to providing a student-centered educational environmental for the emergence of scholars, scientists, leaders and critical thinkers, who are equipped to excel through their contributions and leadership in a 21st century national and global society.

The University is proud to announce that within the past four years, AAMU was reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and continues to increase their national rankings. Recently, AAMU was ranked 26th among HBCUs and 97th among universities offering an engineering degree by the U.S. News and World Report Rankings. In the State of Alabama, AAMU is recognized as the university producing the highest number of minority STEM graduates. And, the AAMU Social Work Program was ranked 2nd in the nation by graduateprograms. com.

While much has been achieved, there remains much work for the future. Among the many works to be addressed, the goals that have been identified for the next two to three years for AAMU consists of: 1) Completion of the Phase I Master Plan, including the 580-bed residential hall 2) Accreditation of the College of Business and Public Affairs by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) 3) Total Enrollment for AAMU to reach 6,000 students 4) $1 Million Campaign for the Scoreboard at the Louis Crews Stadium 5) Reaffirmation of all accredited degree programs offered 6) Successful Completion and Approval of the SACSCOC 5-Year Interim Report The accomplishments delineated herein are the results of the hard work of a committed and dedicated administrative leadership team, supportive faculty and staff, amazing students and committed alumni and community supporters. These achievements reflect what can happen when the leadership of the university, the Board of Trustees, and the university administration are in tandem. It is clearly evident that much has been accomplished here at Alabama A&M University; however, there remains much to be done and the future of AAMU is indeed much greater than the past.

UNIVERSITY RANKINGS, INTERNATIONAL, NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND STATE DISTINCTIONS  AAMU is among the Top 20 largest employers in the region based on the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce listing.  According to the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce, AAMU has a $350 million economic impact on the State of Alabama and $228 million in the region.  U.S. News and World Report ranks AAMU 26th among HBCUs.  College Choice ranks AAMU 24th among HBCUs.  AAMU is host to the Confucius Institute, one of three in Alabama and one of 107 in the United States.  According to U.S. News and World Report Rankings, Alabama A&M University ranked 97th amongst universities offering an Engineering Degree (Doctorate Not Offered)

AAMU was placed on the U.S. News Short List, which includes the top 10 schools nationally with the least expensive room and board, $5,440 or less, for 2014-15.  AAMU ranked #8 of 91 higher educational institutions in Alabama on Return on Investment (ROI) based on 2015 College ROI Report.  AAMU is ranked #10 in the nation by the United States Department of Education on the measures of Access, Affordability, and Outcomes.  AAMU’s Graduate School Ranked: o 2nd Nationally in Social Work for Career Support (GraduatePrograms.com). o 2ndNationally for the number of underrepresented minorities receiving Ph.D. degrees in Physics (American Physical Society). o 5th Nationally in female fraction of Ph.D. degrees in Physics (American Physical Society). o 30th Nationally for best overall top ranked Food Science Program at a University with overall enrollment less than 10,000 students. (colleges.startclass.com, 2014).

AAMU was listed on the 2017 Bronze Military Friendly School List TheHundred-Seven.org in 2017 recognized AAMU as one of only three HBCUs among the Top 50 producers of African-American STEM graduates in five core STEM categories.

The world-renown Alabama A&M University Choir was presented in concert by the Distinguished Concerts International of New York (DCINY) in April 2014 in Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

AAMU was the highest ranked historically black college or university (HBCU) in the nation for social mobility, according to the college rankings of the Washington Monthly magazine. Among the nation’s universities classified as “master’s universities,” AAMU ranked 24th in the nation.

According to BestValueSchools.com, AAMU “excels in all categories, making it an easy contender on any list of the top universities in Alabama.” The university was noted for having built “an impressive reputation for graduating highly qualified African-American scholars with bright futures.”

PayScale, which calculates return on investment, placed AAMU’s 20-year net ROI at $220,000.

AAMU earned a $25,000 Campus Pride Grant in the Home Depot “Retool Your School” Contest.

The National Weather Center has recognized AAMU as a Storm Ready Community. The StormReady program helps arm America's communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property--before, during and after the event. StormReady helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen local safety programs.

AAMU was selected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to participate in the Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador Initiative. The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative is an effort to formally recognize NOAA partners who are improving the nation’s readiness against extreme weather, water, and climate events. As a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, your organization is committing to work with NOAA and other Ambassadors to strengthen national resilience against extreme weather.

ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT: RECRUITMENT, RETENTION, AND COMPLETION  AAMU created the division of enrollment management providing for greater coordination of the functions of admissions, registration, and financial aid.  The President, for the past 6 years, has played a significant role in the recruitment process as the impetus for the Presidential Community Engagement Bus Tour of Alabama. Annually, the tour visits over 50 high schools and makes scholarship awards to accepted students.  To boost recruitment efforts, the University allocated monies to purchase three vehicles for the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management.

Provided Out-of-State Tuition Scholarships for students meeting the requirements.

AAMU Enrollment Management certified 28 alumni recruiters that will be accessible in various school systems to assist with recruitment efforts for the university.

AAMU Enrollment has increased each of the past 5 consecutive years. Fall headcount enrollment has grown by 18.5% since Fall 2012 (Figure 1).

In Fall 2015, AAMU had its highest first-time freshman enrollment in the history of the university.

The previous high of 1,302 students occurred in 2003. In Fall 2015, the enrollment was 1,483 students.

More recently, in Fall 2016, AAMU broke the highest enrollment record for first-time freshmen with an enrollment of 1,637 students (Figure 2). Over the five-year period, first-time freshmen enrollment increased by 58%.

Graduate student enrollment increased from 950 students in FY 2013 to 1008 students in FY 2016 or by 6%.

The Graduation Rate has been an average of 31% over the past 5 cohorts (Fall 2006 – 2010).

Center for Academic Student Engagement and Success in the College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences  Center for Learning, Academic Support and Success in the College of Education, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences  Center for Learning, Innovating, Networking and Questioning in the College of Business and Public Affairs  Confucius Institute – AAMU is home to one of the only 107 Confucius Institutes at a college or university in the nation—one of only 4 sites at HBCUs and one of only 3 such institutes in Alabama. o Restructured Academic Departments and Rename Centers of Excellence  Removed the Department of Accounting and Logistics and combined the two programs in the newly formed Department of Management and Marketing.  Merged the Department of Reading, Elementary/Early Childhood and Special Education and the Department of Educational Leadership and Secondary Education to the Department of Teacher Education and Leadership.  Merged the Department of Engineering, Construction Management and Industrial Technology into the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering.  Changed the name of the Center of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development to the Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Development.  Changed the name of the undergraduate degree in General Studies to Liberal Studies to better reflect a collegiate offering.  Changed the name of the graduate degree in Materiel Engineering to Systems and Material Engineering to provide for greater clarity of the degree offering. o Experiential Learning/Internship/Co-Op Experience  Instituted an Experiential Learning/Internship/Co-Op Experience for College of Business and Public Affairs (CBPA) students as a requirement. Developed a Student Leadership Institute has been developed to focus on the individual and organization.

Launched the Peace Corps Prep Program – provide educational and skill building opportunities for students that will assist them in pursuing a career in the international arena.

Commissioned 15 Second Lieutenants. The University’s ROTC program met its mission as established by the US Army bringing the total Cadets that were commissioned by the program up to 895 since its inception.

Provided support for student leaders and student groups representing the University consistent with practices at other universities to include student stipends for housing, book allowance, and/or tuition assistance: o Miss AAMU o SGA President o Dancing Divas (Band Dance Troupe) o Flag Members Purchased $70,000 in new instrumentation for AAMU Marching Band Purchased new uniforms for AAMU Bulldog Cheerleaders As part of a campus-wide comprehensive prevention program, AAMU expects students to complete the “HAVEN – Understanding Sexual Assault” online course. This online course empowers them to make well-informed social decisions that affect the college years and beyond. It is mandatory for all AAMU students to complete the Haven Program.

Received notable recognition: George C. Marshall Award for Outstanding ROTC Cadet, Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Award, $5,000 Space and Missile Defense scholarship.

Placed 7th overall out of the 48 total teams eligible to participate in the Sweet 16 of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge recently in Torrance, California.

Received Diverse Magazine’s Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athlete Award for Excellence in academia, athletics and community service (Ariel Dowdy, Brianna Ziegler, Alganese Gatson).

Won the SWAC Conference Championship Tournament in Bowling in 2015.

Received recognition by the NCAA for being in the top 10% nationally for all Division I schools for APR (Academic Progress Rates) scores in Women’s Basketball.

Received recognition by the NCAA for perfect 1000 APRs for a single year in Men’s Tennis, Women’s Basketball, Bowling, Volleyball and Women’s Tennis.

UNIVERSITY’S IMAGE AND RECOGNITION  Hosted New York City’s FireLight Media in October 2016 for an upcoming documentary on HBCU histories and significance.  The University Band participated in the Queen City Battle of the Bands in Charlotte, North Carolina; was a Finalist for the 2017 Honda Battle of the Bands.; and was invited to Louisville, Kentucky to welcome the newest member to the HBCU family: Simmons College, the 107th HBCU.  Redesigned the official university flag for display during official university ceremonies.  Implemented the use of name badges to enhance the quality of customer service and provide a safe and secure workplace for all employees.  Created a video highlighting the Top 10 accomplishment of the University.  Created promotional commercials for each of the four colleges and athletics.  Enhanced the marketing of the University through the placement of billboards in Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham and other strategic market areas in the state of Alabama.  Named Louis Crews Stadium Press Box for Ronald & Patricia McCalep McIntosh, Sr. in recognition for their multiple significant gifts to the University.  Named the health center in honor of John and Ella McCain in recognition of their longstanding financial support of the University.  Increased overall coverage in the locally owned Speakin Out News.  Alumni Affairs created a Facebook page to enhance communication with alumni and friends.  Through its contract with Comcast, AAMU was provided Channel 78 exclusively which provides information and programming about AAMU throughout the local Comcast service area.  Marketing & Public Relations produced several publications to cultivate and recognize donors to include: Bulldog Pride Committee 5-Year Report, the Points of Pride and First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative.

Part II: Strengthening University Financial Resources  FOCUS Area 3: Increased Extramural Funding through Grants, Contracts and Fund Development  FOCUS Area 5: Maintain Fiscal Stability and Efficiency of Resource Management  FUTURE Strategic Priority 4: Secure the University’s Financial Future FEDERAL GRANTS AND AID  The University established a 501c3 entity AAMU RISE (Research, Innovation, Science, and Engineering) Foundation to secure and manage contracts with business and government agencies.  Total Number of Research Dollars Generated during 2013 – 2017 totals over $100,000,000 dollars as of 08/09/2017. $31,252,971 for 2013 – 2014 and up by $1,268,430 (4% ) to a total of $32,521,401 for 2015 – 2016.  The Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) recognized AAMU as the recipient of the 1890 Research Award because it achieved the largest increase (9.13%) in federal research funding and research dollar acquisition.

FUND DEVELOPMENT AND PROSPECT MANAGEMENT  First Lady Abbiegail Hugine launched the First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative to raise scholarship funds for deserving students through a luncheon honoring the University’s first ladies. To date, more than $200,000 has been raised for scholarships, along with an endowed scholarship for $125,000.  Significant gifts were received from Greek-Letter Organizations o Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated - $105,000 o Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated - $153,518 o Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated - $100,000  Alabama A&M University completed its first Capital Campaign called “Imagine the Future” which garnered more than $25 million in philanthropic support. Secured $1 million pledge and initial installment from NBA legend Charles Barkley making it the first million-dollar gift from an individual to AAMU. The 2015 Black Tie Scholarship Gala featured alumnus and former “American Idol” Ruben Studdard.

The overall Gala event fundraising total for 2013 – 2017 was $773,730.78.

The total giving (i.e., cash, pledge, estate, and in-kind) increased from $2.64M in FY13 to $3.54M year-to-date (34% increase).

Board of Trustees institutionalized the Normal Legacy Society which recognizes contributions of $100,000 or more to Alabama A&M University. Currently, there are 12 members total.

Enhanced athletic revenue through the receipt of game guarantees in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball totaling ~$100,000 from 2013 – 2017.

HUMAN RESOURCES AND FISCAL MANAGEMENT  The AAMU provided cost of living adjustments to its faculty and staff by implementing a two percent across-the-board raise to qualifying employees during the FY13, FY15 and FY16.  A voluntary severance program resulted in an estimated net reduction in personnel cost of $2.1 million.  University placed the “salary floor (minimum) for 12-month employees at $24,357.  Renewed the $6 million line of credit with Regions Bank at a competitive interest rate.  AAMU secured a $96 million financial package from the HBCU Capital Financing Program, the largest in the U.S. Department of Education’s history, which refinanced existing debt, saved about $400,000 per year and provided $30 million to construct the new 600-bed residence hall. Construction began on the facility in mid-August 2016 with Spring 2018 completion date.  The AAMU branded license plate is the 5th most popular collegiate plate in the State, with ~4,755 plates purchased in 2015 generating $214,993.74 to provide scholarships for students.  Secured an increase of about $300,000 in O&M--operations and maintenance, $400,000 for residence hall renovations, and $100,000 for Carter Hall renovation bringing the total state support for the science building to $1.3 million.  AAMU’s year-end cash balance at the end of FY13 was $7.0M and has increased to $27M by the end of FY16.  The debt service coverage ratio (DSCR), is an industry measure of cash flow available to pay current debt obligations. A DSCR of 1.2 is generally accepted as being sufficient for the institution to adequately pay its debt. AAMU’s initial DSCR went from 1.27 in FY13, to 2.07 in FY16.  AAMU is in its best financial condition in more than a decade. A measure of an organization’s fiscal health is its Composite Financial Index, with an index of 3.0 denoting a healthy financial picture.

Enhanced Physical Resources and Space Utilization

 FUTURE Strategic Priority 3: Upgrade University Infrastructure and Facilities CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION AND AESTHETICS  The Normalite Walkway located in the center of the campus not only enhances the campus aesthetics but the commemorative pavers on the “Quad” provides an excellent fundraising initiative. To date, the Bulldog Pride Committee has raised more than $112,053.  “Dancing with the President and First Lady” is a festive evening of dance featuring couples who perform diverse dance routines in a manner similar to the popular ABC “Dancing with the Stars” format. Proceeds benefit campus beautification efforts.

UNIVERSITY MASTER PLAN PHASE 1 AND CAPITAL PROJECTS  Developed AAMU’s Master Plan which was approved by the Board of Trustees at its meeting in October 2013.  Artificial turf has been installed at Louis Crews Stadium through a partnership with the City of Huntsville and Huntsville City Schools.  To control access to the Normal Hill Student Apartments, a security gate was installed at the point of entry, along with a more visible law enforcement presence.  Held groundbreaking for a new 580-bed residential hall with expected completion date of January 2018.  Removal of Non-Effective Assets o Police Station o Water Pump o Gravitt Apartments  Installed additional curve side access to enhance ADA accessibility to the Learning Resource Center and Patton Hall.  During 2013 – 2017, a total of $53,10,466 was spent on deferred maintenance and renovations. A detailed listing of capital projects, deferred maintenance and renovations is shown is Table 1.

 FOCUS Area 9: Technology Integration  FUTURE Strategic Priority 2: Strengthen Structures, Operations and Systems to Promote and Support Organizational Excellence and Stewardship INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS  AAMU’s School of Graduate Studies held a two-day Institutional Effectiveness Conference. The conference featured new approaches in institutional effectiveness and assessment “for measuring true student success.” It also offered insights into writing techniques for accreditation reporting, as well as ways to ensure faculty qualifications for verifying compliance issues. An array of specialists in assessment, governance and compliance honed in on the summer’s theme, “Placement, Assessment, and Enhancing Student Success.”  The Office of Institutional, Planning and Research Effectiveness (OIPRE) presented a series of outcome assessment workshops introducing a new outcome assessment model to open the 2015 – 2016 academic year.  An online customer service survey was instituted, and 14 customer service training workshops were conducted.  A campus wide budget development process utilizing SPOL (Strategic Planning Online) was implemented which relates budget allocations to university goals and objectives.  Initiated functions to complete the educational program requirements for the Compliance Report for the reaffirmation of accreditation by SACSCOC to include appointing a QEP Director, identification of the QEP topic, auditing faculty files and credentials, and reviewing all program and course offerings.  Reviewed, revised and /or developed all policy manuals and catalogues (Undergraduate Catalog, Graduate Catalog, Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Policies Manuals)  Clarified AAMU’s Admission Policy to provide for full admittance into AAMU based on Composite Predictive Index (CPI) score of 18 or higher. The CPI score is a combination of the high school grade point average (GPA) and ACT/SAT Scores.  Revised, in conjunction with a faculty committee, the faculty handbook with updated policies on tenure, promotion, evaluation and faculty rights and responsibilities.  Developed Student Code of Conduct with approval by the Board of Trustees, Faculty Senate, Student Government Association, Graduate Council, Curriculum/Standards Committee, and Graduate Student Association.

OPERATION, SYSTEMS AND ORGANIZATIONAL ENHANCEMENTS  The administrative and financial enterprise resource planning systems were enhanced to offer students, their parents, and other authorized users the convenience of self-service access to bills and bill payments in order to improve the institutional effectiveness for enrolling students.  Under an approved flat rate tuition plan, students can take any credits between 12 and 18 without additional cost. Any credits above 18 would be assessed an additional per credit hour charge. The purpose of the plan was to encourage students to complete their program in a timely manner.  Employees secured significant health insurance savings when the University joined the PEEHIP plan.  Implemented tuition gift certificates program, which allows alumni, family and friends to pay on a student’s account online by purchasing an AAMU gift certificate.

Renewed contract with Follett for the management of the AAMU Bookstore WJAB-FM 90.9 was one of 26 National Public Radio (NPR) member stations selected to participate in a pilot program to demonstrate the delivery of emergency alerts to people who are deaf or hard-ofhearing in the Gulf Coast states. The initiative is a joint effort with NPR Labs, the technology research and development group of NPR, under a grant from the U.S. The Department of Public Safety instituted a community policing program. Within the reporting period of 2013-2015, CLERY reported crime incidences were reduced by 33% since 2013. The significant areas of reduction include thefts, burglaries and aggravated assaults.

Implemented an online travel booking process (Egencia) allowing for same day authorization and booking of all travel. The electronic booking system resulted in a savings of $45,200 per year in travel costs.

Implemented the utilization of technology to enhance the functioning of various service division to include: o Purchasing – online purchase orders, vendor registries o Property Management – electronic shipment, tracking and inventory o Comptroller’s Office – electronic time sheets, cloud storage and online payment system for students Bulldog Transit Service has implemented the use of Speed Radar Signs and speed control cushions on campus to monitor traffic speed Upgraded AAMU’s Emergency Operation Plan.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION AND ENHANCEMENTS  The Marketing, Communication and Advancement (MCA) division instituted “Qgiv”, a web-based online program that provides giving opportunities.  Equipped all residence halls with flat screen televisions used for both digital signage and delivery of television programs.  Human Resources implemented the use of the Electronic Personnel Action Forms for employees and students in order to allow departments to enter personnel changes through self-service banner  The Information Technology unit increased the number of Smart Classrooms on the campus from one to 30 to improve the delivery of instruction to students across the various academic programs. Six computer labs have been upgraded, now making available over 300+ computers across the campus.

The University’s Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) has been upgraded into a hosting environment that supports 99.999% availability in order to improve the quality and delivery of our online classes.

To provide increased safety measures, AAMU placed security officers in each residence hall.

The installation of security cameras in the residence halls was completed and all university surveillance cameras were networked.

AAMU implemented the Bulldog Alert Text Notification System for emergency situations.

The Telecommunications Center, in collaboration with IT, provided live concurrent streaming of commencements. Commencement overflow rooms have also been made available to enable visitors to view the ceremonies when the main venue is overcrowded.

University’s broadband capability was upgraded from 64 Mbps to 200 Mbps. AAMU enabled and/or updated wireless connectivity in all residence halls. Further, WIFI accessibility was also extended into Normal Hill Student Apartments.

Initiated DegreeWorks, a comprehensive, user-friendly and web-based academic advising and degree audit mechanism for students and their advisors. AAMU has also launched GradesFirst, which early alert, advising management, integrated communications, and tutoring management services to maximize the impact of quality academic advising.

AAMU faculty and staff were able to sign-in electronically for University-wide conferences by scanning their ID badges.

Upgraded campus information technology storage from 2tb to 20tb to support server virtualization efforts.

Upgraded CBORD Housing Service to enhance campus auxiliary services such as campus housing management.

Upgraded campus-wide e-mail to Microsoft 2013 Introduced the use of i-clickers in the classrooms to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom to provide a student response solution that allows one to easily transform the classroom into an active learning environment.

Bulldog fans are currently able to purchase tickets to athletic events online via www.AAMUTix.com.

AAMU’s decisive switch to a (Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system resulted in savings and allowed for efficient service and added features.

Part V: Community Engagement and Outreach  FOCUS Area 6: Enhanced University Engagement Through Expanded Outreach  FUTURE Strategic Priority 6: Enhance University Engagement through Expanded Outreach CAMPUS-WIDE COMMUNITY OUTREACH  The President presents an “Annual State of the University” address to faculty and staff at fall conferences.  The President shares his monthly activities and accomplishments with the community through the President’s Newsletter.  The President has “Conversations with the President” where faculty and staff are invited to have dinner with the President and Cabinet Members.  The Public Relations office shares the “Happenings on the Hill” with the students, staff, alumni and local community through the Bulldog Bottomline.  The freshman class receives a welcome address from the President each fall, along with his participation in the Torch Lighting Induction Program.  To facilitate communication between administration and the student body, the President and the administrative team participated in a “fireside chat” to allow students to voice their concerns about issues that matter to them.  Students and staff at AAMU planted trees donated by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota The planting celebrated the University’s commitment to tree care and conservation, and its quest for Tree Campus USA recognition. The event was also supported by Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest Greeklettered organization established by African-American, college-educated women.

LOCAL AND STATEWIDE COMMUNITY OUTREACH  AAMU’s President was recognized by Southern Company and Essence Magazine with the Educator Advocate Award at the Evening of Elegance held in conjunction with the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Leadership Conference.  Published the first edition Cadet Newsletter which served as a catalyst for our ROTC Alumni Reach Back Program. Most notably, BG Burden (AAMU’s first Army General Officer), has visited the campus and the program as a result.  AAMU hosted its 1st Technology and Innovation Day in partnership with Alabama Launchpad.  Developed relationships with local Military organizations to include the Redstone Intermediate Level Education program, Air Defense Artillery Association (ADAA, Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and U S Army Warrant Officers Association (USAWOA). These relationships led to several speaking and mentoring opportunities in addition to donations to the program.  Over 700 AAMU freshmen volunteered throughout Huntsville, Ala., on April 1, 2017, as part of the Serving the City as One Initiative, coordinated by the Freshman Academy and First Baptist Church (Governors).  The AAMU Student Health and Wellness Center held two community health fairs o The New Beginnings Church Community Health Fair o The 100 Black Men Health and Wellness Fair  AAMU staff and supporters test drove Ford vehicles in support of the Women’s Economic Development Council (WEDC) at the Woody Anderson Ford Drive 4UR Community. The WEDC Foundation helps women make their dreams of economic independence come true.

The AAMU Student Government Association participated in collaboration with Girls, Inc. Huntsville, Alabama in the HBCU Ford Challenge and was awarded $10,000 for the project to develop a community garden for the socio-economic dis advantaged families in Huntsville/Madison areas.

Established the Virginia Caples Lifelong Learning Institute to provide health, financial and legal resources to the aged as well as empower older adults to make better and more informed decision regarding those areas.

Implemented a Freshman Academy Initiative aimed to educate AAMU students on the need to willfully serve the community in conjunction with classroom learning. Students are afforded the opportunity to provide hands-on service that will allow them to apply what they learn in class to the real world and then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between service and learning. Students planted a community Garden in the Edmonton Heights neighborhood and offered fresh vegetables to residents.

AAMU joined the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban and New Nontraditional Programs unit in Operation Green Team’s 2016 Earth Day Festival at Hays Nature Preserve.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs Unit hosted the two-month, statewide Healthy Heart 1000 Challenge (HHC 1000). According to organizers, the event challenges 1,000 Alabama women to improve their heart health and, ultimately, their lives.

The President instituted the Faith-Based Community Unity Breakfast, held in conjunction with the Founder’s Day observance. The Right Reverend James Levert Davis, Bishop of the 9th Episcopal District of the AME Church was the inaugural speaker, and Dr. David Hull, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, was the second speaker. Other distinguished guests have included: Judge Penny Brown Reynolds; Dr. Leslie Pollard, president, Oakwood University; Dr. Thomas Calhoun, vice president, University of North Alabama; and Bishop Harry Seawright of the 9th Episcopal District of the AME Church.

Purchasing department presented a training seminar to the Huntsville/Madison African American Chamber of Commerce entitled “How to do business with AAMU”. The Chamber of Commerce included the information obtained in the official newsletter and on its website.

The AAMU administration has met and/or hosted local elected officials including the Mayor Tommy Battle of Huntsville, Mayor Paul Finley of the City of Madison, Mayor Troy Trulock of the City of Madison, Mayor Kenneth Gulley of Bessemer, Mayor William Bell of Birmingham, Councilman Jay Robeson of Birmingham, County Commissioners Mike Gillespie, Dale Strong, and Bob Harrison, City Councilmen Richard Showers and Wil Culver.

AAMU officials have met with or hosted members of the Madison County Legislative Delegation including Representatives Phil Williams, Mike Ball, Laura Hall, Howard Sanderford, Jim Patterson, Mac McCutcheon, Wayne Johnson, Senators Arthur Orr, Paul Sanford, Clay Scofield and Bill Holtzclaw.

The President met with the editorial board of the Huntsville Times and participated in interviews with TV Stations, Fox 54, WHNT, and WJAB. AAMU officials either met or hosted Redstone Arsenal and NASA personnel to include Mr. Curtis Clark, Civilian Garrison Officer at Redstone Arsenal, Joe Winston, Ronnie Chronister, Gene Goldman, Robert Lightfoot, and Charles Scales.

The AAMU President met or hosted on campus Maj. Gen. James Myles, General James H. Pillsbury, General Ann E. Dunwoody, Colonel John S. Hamilton, General Lt. Gen. Patrick J. O’Reilly, General Dennis Via, General James Rogers, Lt. General Larry Wyche, and General Gus. The President holds active membership in Huntsville Rotary, Chamber of Commerce (Board of Directors), Huntsville Botanical Gardens (Advisory Board) and Leadership Huntsville/Madison County.

President Hugine also has visited a number of companies in Huntsville, including Jim Bolte of Toyota, John Holley and Dennis Cavin of Lockheed Martin, Kevin Campbell of Northrop Grumman, Richard Myers of Hudson Alpha, Tony Jones Boeing and John Gully of SAIC. AAMU has institutionalized the Bone Marrow Drive and Walk, held in the autumn of each year.

Led by First Lady Abbiegail Hugine and the Bulldog Pride Committee, the event takes place at Legacy Lake, and it attracts members of the University family and surrounding community.

Alabama A&M University’s TRiO-Special Programs office hosted TRiO Day in the AAMU Wellness Center for the entire State of Alabama, with able assistance from the North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence (NACEE). TRiO programs from throughout Alabama celebrated the work and achievement of TRiO, recognized the academic achievement of participants, and encouraged the programs to continue their efforts to help pre-college and college students persist in school, perform well academically and to graduate. Over 800 participants attended.

The President attended the Business Council of Alabama Chairman’s Reception Dinner in Birmingham, which featured former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as the speaker.

AAMU partners with the Madison County Commission District 6 to form and sustain community/public gardens that provide free vegetables to the community.

AAMU team raised more than $20,000 for the United Way Campaign. Over 350 faculty and staff participated in the Madison County project. AAMU was recognized as one of the “2016 United Way of Madison County Top 30 Company Campaigns.”

REGIONAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH  AAMU President Andrew Hugine, Jr., (3rd, left) spoke on the state of HBCUs during a President’s panel at the 2014 Tom Joyner Family Reunion Weekend in Orlando, Fla. The panel was convened in Orlando, Fla., at the Gaylord Palms Resort by Tom Joyner Foundation Family Reunion weekend organizers.

Hugine joined a group that included Leroy Pernell, dean, Florida A&M University Law School; Dr. Elmira Mangum, president, Florida A&M University; and Eddie N. Moore, Jr., president, Norfolk State University. The four discussed accomplishments and issues confronting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).  To expand the reach of the University throughout the Southeastern region, President Hugine has served as speaker, presenter and/or has attended meetings of the following Alumni Chapters: Washington, DC, Atlanta, Talladega, Montgomery, Huntsville, Huntsville and other locations.  The President also has served as a speaker or presenter at numerous events, including the Huntsville Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, AAMU Alumni Chapters, Churches and Commencements at colleges and universities.  AAMU has hosted a Nobel Laureate for 19 consecutive years; the only institution in the country to have such a distinction.  AAMU was the host institution for the National Poultry Workshop with two Cabinet Members in attendance: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.  A delegation of administrators, researchers and students visited Nanjing Forestry University in China and the President participated in the 110th Anniversary, the only visiting guest accorded that honor. In turn, AAMU has hosted three delegations from Nanjing Forestry University.  AAMU hosted a luncheon to honor Ato Fuad Ibrahim, the State Minister of General Education for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.  The President appeared on Jesse Jackson’s Show, which was viewed worldwide.  President Hugine attended the meeting with the New President of the United States organized by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
