SITE LOCATION

PRESENT DAY • The site is an open field and it is being overtaken by native plants • Post-industrial site with one remaining building from IS&W • Wanted to preserve the open experience of the site • Chose to delicately place a one-story building among a continuation of the naturally occurring vegetation • It also needed to have a program to bring people to the building • This meant adding a cafe and interactive space gallery

EARLY CONCEPTS • Experimentation with a radial arrangement • Radial form allows for focal emphasis on one element with supplemental adjacent components • Multiple entrances directly leading to different program clusters • Outlined which elements might need two story spaces • Determined that a double-height space would be necessary for natural daylight

FORM DEVELOPMENT • Strong connections or weak connections between program elements • Orthogonal forms represent a foundation of knowledge from which our research and understanding can grow • Curvature form celebrates new ideas, groundbreaking research, and innovative materials • The concept of hierarchy was used both in the physical forms and with program organization

FLOOR PLAN • Main horizontal spine that includes classrooms and the cafe • Three arms that include clustered programming • Southeast arm is for simulation labs, science labs, and faculty offices • Central arm is for the library and building spaces • West arm is for the lecture hall and loading dock

MAIN ENTRANCE • The main entrance occurs at the peak of the undulating roof • It stands out with a large doublebay overhang and a two-story high curtainwall facade • The timberframe structure over the entrance makes a welcoming plaza space

INDOOR/OUTDOOR CAFE • This East entrance is secondary in terms of its location but it still opens up into the gallery space • The undulating roof form leads the eye towards the smaller entrance • Welcoming public space for the surrounding neighborhood residents and the students and faculty of the center

SECONDARY ENTRANCE • The sawtooth roof is visible in this view • The form of this roof allows light to flood the southeast wing corridor which connects the entrance to the faculty offices and science labs • The landscaping and vegetation emphasizes circulation

SPACE EXPLORATION GALLERY • Guests entering either entrance will immediately enter a large gallery space with objects and milestones of space exploration and research • Exposed structural timberframe defines the spaces and allows for a lot of daylight • The undulation of the roof continues on the inside as well as the outside

INDOOR/OUTDOOR WORKSPACE • This is one of the large student workspaces • This double-height space also connects the inside and outside • The large doors allow students to work on large projects outside so they have more room to maneuver large components • Model rockets and airplanes would be common projects for students to study and build
