Our monthly Board meeting was held on Monday 8 October 2018 with Jim Wiedman, Bryan Fripp, Kay Gesch, Dennis Kyling, Judith Lees and Brett Gillis in attendance.

Items discussed and actioned include: ● Treasurer’s Report Brett gave a comprehensive report, via the television screen, that showed profit and loss for the current month as well as for the first 9 months of 2018.

A combination of wet weather, club refurbishments and nil charge to compete in club championships has resulted in an operating profit loss of approximately $15,000 compared to the corresponding period in 2017.

The club is still operating at a surplus, even given the above impacts.

Since the introduction of keg beer in mid-May the club has purchased 20 kegs. This equates to approximately the sale of 5 kegs per month. This has exceeded all expectations.

The cost of electricity has risen by approximately $100 per quarter for the past 3 quarters. The Treasurer and Secretary will endeavour to discover the reason/s given there have been substantial upgrades of items using electricity.

Copies of various components comprising Brett`s report are available for any to peruse.

● Bar Managers Report Bryan has purchased two new buckets for under the bar counter to reduce presence of condensation on floor. Bar staff to monitor and empty as required. At the request of Dennis, Bryan will consult the visiting serviceman to ascertain if the bucket behind the kegs can be located on the other side of the unit to allow for easier emptying. ​secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au​

Club Maintenance Judith advised that a free pest inspection will be undertaken by Pest Worx on Thursday 11th October 2018.

Annual Dinner and Presentation Night Jim led a discussion on End of Year Function : As of 8/10/18 only 14 of 41 full members and 7 of 58 social members had indicated a willingness to attend. Joe advised 30 numbers required by 12 October with deposit of approx. $160 required. With potential for withdrawals Board Members agreed to progress with a low cost option that could cater for all, including gluten free. Members not wanting to travel in darkness or with later commitments will hopefully attend. Numbers attending to be gathered in mid-late November. APIA $200 to offset cost of finger food. Attendees will most likely purchase additional drinks Christmas Break Up on 1st December. Gather at 4pm for 4.30pm start. Cost $5 per person includes a free beer, wine or soft drink.

Commence with trophy presentations, followed by serving of finger food. Members can depart at any time until bar closes.

Monthly Jackpot Pairs Discussed need to encourage greater participation by MBC members in Monthly Jackpot Pairs so as to ensure good patronage by visiting clubs. Agreed that both Full and Social members should be encouraged to form teams and compete.

Kay was reimbursed for costs incurred to date in purchasing ingredients. A good response from visiting clubs should ensure 8 rinks will be full on the day [8th November].

ATO B. Gillis advised that the Australian Tax Office (ATO) was seeking taxation returns for at least the last decade. As the Treasurer is unsure of how to progress such a request, advice will be sought from the club’s auditor. ​secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au​

NBN Connection Brett will progress the offer as currently available through TPG. The cost benefits to the club are quite significant.

De Bortoli Wines Launch Brett has three dates on which DE BORTOLI wines will be promoted. Details are as outlined in the latest club newsletter and accompanying Action Sheet. These days have the potential to attract new members into the club.

5 Year Strategic Plan Brett to provide Board Members with a link to Bowls Queensland so as to gain an appreciation as to the benefits of formulating a 5 year business plan for MBC. Members to put their views at next month’s board meeting.

Flag Pole The issue of having difficulty in raising and lowering of flags was raised by D. Kyling. Dennis will report on possible solutions at next board meeting

Our annual spectacular event will be held ​Thursday 8 November 2018​.

As the name suggests prizes on the day are homemade plum puddings that are famous in the region. We rely on the cooking talents of members and local volunteers who methodically create these sought after gems that attract a full green of visiting bowlers.

​Faye's Classic Christmas Plum Pudding Recipe

1 and 1/2lb, mixed fruit 2 cups brown sugar 2 tbsps plum jam 2 cups dates 4 oz butter (chopped to sultana 2 cups water size)

Ingredients:

4 tsp carb, soda 4 cups plain flour 2 tsp mixed spice 1 cup rum

Place first 6 ingredients into saucepan and simmer until syrupy. Remove from heat. Add bicarb soda and stir well. Allow to cool.

When cool add plain flour, mixed spice and rum. Stir well.

Spoon into steamer leaving at least an inch or 2 space at top.

Cover with 2 or 3 sheets of plastic wrap tied securely around rim of bowl and steam for 4 hours large pudding and 3 hours for medium - small size. Check water level in saucepan regularly and if necessary, top up with boiling water.

When cooked, remove pudding from bowl, allow to become cold, then wrap pudding in glad wrap or alfoil and store in fridge or freezer.

This mixture makes 1 large or 2 medium or 3 - 4 small puddings. ​secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au​

Maleny Bowls Club hosts the Monthly Jackpot Pairs on the 4th Monday of each month. Regular visiting teams include Mapleton (3 teams), Kilcoy (2 teams) and Woodford (1 team).

The Board has decided to open the competition to now include Social Members who can participate. Bowls attire is preferred but is non compulsory.

So if you would like to participate please nominate on the games board at the club. You may even wish to form a pairs team and play together.

Ladies President Kay Gesch will be conducting a Plum Pudding Cooking Class at the club to help encourage members and their friends to become part of our baking volunteers cooking our famous plum puddings.
