Bar Renovations Completed           `

The April Board Meeting approved the organising committee of Miles Allen, Jim Wiedman and Graeme Glover to call nominations for interest in  the 2018 Men's and Ladies Singles Club Championships.  These nominations will close on Tuesday 24th April 2018.  This format will be completed before the next format commences .  No nomination fees will be charged.  The reasons for running one at a time is to allow people if absent to not  miss all of the championships.  Depending on numbers the first games may need to commence on  Sunday 29th April.  Players are expected to play when called during that week scheduled.  It will be scheduled to be completed by the end of May then the pairs  commence and so on.  It is asked that players be aware of their commitments when nominating .  It is hoped that with cooperation the play, sub or forfeit rule will not need  to be invoked while it remains an integral part of any club championship.

On behalf of the 2018 board can I thank you all for your support for the tremendous work done by many of our volunteers and the building  contractors.  The inconveniences have proved to be small compared to the outcome  thanks one and all for your patience.  As a board we celebrate 80 years of bowls in Maleny and what better  way than our future proofing to acknowledge the past and move us into  the future.  To all members past and present it is your club you are always welcome  to come along and enjoy the upgrades we have been able to achieve.  Bowls has not been forgotten during the build.  As a board lots of people are doing some good things that will enhance  us as a club and give a more enjoyable experience for all members.  We will keep you posted on the following positives for our members  including club championships, new shirts, beer on tap, plum pudding  day, club visits, sponsors and general running of the club.  These are the tasks we as a board have set ourselves to do to make the  club the place that you and us would want it to be.  We are improving in our communication and you as a member can help  us be better by emailing any board member with feedback or points of  clarification that you think are needed and we promise it will be tabled  and a reply given. This open communication is the best way for members  to contribute positively to any issues relevant to good governance of the  club.  Because I firmly believe that people by nature join a club to make it the  best it can be and they bring with them an attitude of what can I give this  secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au

place to make it better for the future for all members. Subsequent to our recently completed bar renovations has been the opportunity to improve and expand our products and services that  satisfy members, attract visitors and new members whilst making it  easier for our Providore and Volunteer Bar Staff to operate and manage.  One of these initiatives is to re-introduce keg beer for patrons through  association with Malt Shovel (Lion Nathan) who have agreed to provide  services including temprites, ice bank cooler, glassware, coasters as well  as $2,000 of promotional funds with a total outlay worth $5,500.  We have entered into an agreement with Malt Shovel that is volume  based on 19,000 litres which equates to 390 kegs of beer. Once this  milestone is achieved Maleny Bowls Club takes ownership of all  equipment.  Malt Shovel will also provide free training for bar staff as well as supply a  trolley on which we can easily transport kegs.  There will be 4 taps of beer in operation including Hahn Lite, XXXX Gold,  a heavy beer (brew not yet decided) plus a rotation of international and  craft beers.  Installation of services by Malt Shovel will occur the week starting 8 May  2018 with official launch celebrations to occur shortly thereafter.  Our second initiative has been to make use of our membership with Q  Clubs that entitles us to direct purchase online wines, spirits and soft  drinks at wholesale prices that includes free delivery.  We plan to stock exclusive brand wines not available from bottle shops  with wine and beer price lists placed on tables and on display at the bar.

Oldest bowler makes history Ken Hanson has become Australia’s oldest ever gold medal winner at a Commonwealth Games after making his debut at the spritely age of 68.  The Australian team of Hanson, Tony Bonnell and Josh Thornton held off  a spirited fightback from New Zealand to win gold in the Open B6/B7/B8  Triples at Broadbeach Bowls Club.  New Zealand came from  10-3 down to narrow  Australia’s lead to a  single shot going into the  final end but, under  pressure to avoid an  extra end, Hanson delivered a stunning draw shot to seal gold for the  host nation in a 14-13 victory.

Australia’s lawn bowls golden girls end drought Australia has won gold in the women's fours with a 18-16 victory against South Africa at Broadbeach Bowls Club.  The Australian team of Kelsey Cottrell, Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Asch  and Natasha Scott  defeated South Africa's  Esme Kruger, Nicolene  Neal, Johanna Snyman,  and Elma Davis.  It’s been 12 long years  since the Australian lawn bowls team tasted gold at the Commonwealth  Games. Australian coach and 2006 Gold medalist Kelvin Kerkow said the  home ground was definitely an advantage for the Jackaroos.  secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au

Australia’s ladies triples team take gold Scotland put up a brave fight to stretch the game to 17 ends but it was  delaying the inevitable and in the end they were outclassed 21-12 by the  Aussie trio.  The Scots were left rueing  a critical seventh end,  when they trailed 9-5 but  held four shots, only for  van Asch to deliver a drive  that knocked them all out  and give the Aussies the  shot and a 10-5 lead.  From there it was a steady progression to victory for the Aussies.

Aaron ‘disco tech’ Wilson wows packed crowd Wearing his lucky undies, the 26-year-old became just the third Australian to win the singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games  when he rallied from 6-8  down to beat Canadian  Ryan Bester 21-14..  He trailed 6-8 after end 10  then drew level at 8-8 two  ends later, before making  his move in the 13th when  he produced a clutch final  bowl to take three points  and from there he had to  hold his nerve.  Far from over-awed on his Commonwealth Games debut, Wilson  extended his lead to 19-13 after end 20 and stormed to victory in front of  a home crowd minutes later.       secretary@malenybowlsclub.com.au
