More sadness for the Maleny community as community icons pass on

Over the past week more local identities have unfortunately left us.

Collard OAM, Stanley James “Stan” 25/03/1936

- 13/08/2025

Stanley James Collard was born in Maleny at the Maleny Soldiers Hospital. His parents bought a dairy farm on Kenilworth Road, Witta about 1919 and Stan lived there until the mid-1950s when he moved to Brisbane where he met and married Gloria Auld in 1958.

In 1961 he joined the Queensland Railways as a trainee engineer and was subsequently sent to Cloncurry as an engine driver. He was elected as the 50th Queensland Senator to the Senate for Queensland in 1975. He was re-elected in 1977 and 1983 and retired with the expiration of term in 1987. With time on his hands he took a greater interest in his local community and in the family farm, which he and his brother, Reg, now owned. He was also chairman of the Central Queensland Life Education Committee and in 1988 was invited to join the Queensland board of Life Education. He became state president, and was a member of the Life Education national board for ten years from 1996.

Hankinson, Ivan Francis 20/08/1945

- 19/08/2025

It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of Ivan Hankinson—Past President and Honorary Life Member of the Maleny Agricultural Show Society—on 19 August 2025. His funeral was held at the Witta Cemetery on September 4th which was followed by a wake at the Maleny Showgrounds afterwards.

Ivan was not only a familiar face but a beloved leader, respected volunteer, and a passionate contributor to both the Maleny Show and the wider community.

For years, he was the driving force behind the various Maleny Junior Cricket teams. Not only as manager, but as a taxi driver and umpire for more than a generation of budding young cricketers. His legacy lives on through decades of selfless service and spirited involvement in rural life.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to his family and the Maleny Show Community.

Bushfire Season Is Coming – Are You Ready?

Spring marks the start of the Sunshine Coast’s dry season – and bushfire season. Even after a wet winter, just one week of warm weather can dry out the ground and increase the risk of fires.

Now’s the time to prepare your home, family, and business.

Queensland Road Safety Week -18th – 22nd August!

This Queensland Road Safety Week (18–22 August), we’re reminded that every choice we make on the road matters.

A new RACQ Road Trauma Map has revealed the heartbreaking reality here on the Sunshine Coast: 94 lives lost and more than 2200 people hospitalised from 2019 to 2023. Crash clusters appear along the Bruce Highway, Sunshine Motorway, Nicklin Way, Caloundra Road and more. Already this year, 11 more lives have been cut short in our region.

These aren’t just numbers, they are families, friends and neighbours whose lives have been changed forever. Police are urging all of us to remember the Fatal Five: speeding, distraction, drink and drug driving, driving tired and not wearing seatbelts. Together, as one team Queensland, we can make safer choices, save lives and reduce the toll on our community. Please, slow down, stay alert and look out for one another. Your decision behind the wheel could save a life.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

The Australian Flag

Why disrespecting it is bad behaviour?

Across Australia over recent weeks, demonstrators gathered as part of a series of March for Australia rallies, with protesters calling for a reduction in so-called "mass immigration”. There were other rallies in support of Palestine. We have had Invasion Day rallies and For Australia Day rallies.

Australia is a free democratic country, and no legitimate protest should be prohibited as long as it is legal and kept within the bounds of safety and respect.

The sight of protestors burning the official flag of Australia should be abhorrent to all Australian citizens and those who wish to take refuge in Australia and receive support from Australia.

The flag is more than cloth – it represents Australia’s history, identity, and the sacrifices made by generations, particularly those who served under it in war.

When individuals burn or spit on the flag, many Australians see it as a direct insult not only to the nation but also to the people who built and defended this proud nation. This can create deep emotional hurt for many, particularly on solemn days like Anzac Day or Australia Day, when the flag is prominently displayed in remembrance and pride. While some view burning or spitting on the Australian flag as protest, for most communities, it is seen as a dishonourable act that disrespects national heritage and causes deep emotional offence.

It is not racist for an Australian citizen to be patriotic about the National Flag of Australia; those burning the Australian flag don't mind living and breathing in an amazing free country. If Australia is good enough to provide welfare sustenance to individuals, then the least they can do is to respect the flag of Australia. If this symbol of this beautiful country is so offensive, then find another country in which to live.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful Jones tells of the time that he was flying to see friends in Sydney.

He went to the Brisbane airport and was surprised to find that there was a security scare in full operation. An individual, later discovered to be a state school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a square, a slide rule, and a calculator.

Queensland’s Attorney General believes the man is a member of the notorious Algebra movement.

He is being charged with carrying weapons of math instruction.

“Al-gebra is a very fearsome cult, indeed”, the Attorney General said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on a tangent in a search of absolute value. They consist of quite shadowy figures, with names like “x” and “y”, and, although they are frequently referred to as “unknowns”, we know they really belong to a common denominator and are part of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.

“As the great Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are three sides to every triangle. - my truth, someone else’s truth and the real truth”

When asked to comment on the arrest, the then Premier Palaszczuk said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.”

Stevie the Security Dog from the Maleny Paint Shop goes fishing

On a bright Maleny morning, Stevie the Maleny Paint Security Dog, a tan dachshund, and his master decided to go fishing at Dickie Beach, Caloundra. On their arrival, Stevie trotted eagerly alongside his old master, their fishing rods and a small tackle box clinking softly in rhythm.

The beach stretched wide and golden, waves curling lazily onto the sand. For the dachshund, this was more than just another outing—it was an adventure. His little legs scurried quickly to keep pace with the man’s slower, deliberate stride, the two moving in quiet companionship that spoke of years together.

When they reached a good spot near the rocks, the man settled down, casting his line into the surf with practiced ease. The dachshund, ever curious, sniffed around the tackle box before flopping onto the sand, ears twitching in the sea breeze. Occasionally, he’d bound toward the frothy water, barking at the waves as though daring them to come closer, only to scamper back when the tide rushed in. His master chuckled, the sound mingling with the cries of gulls overhead.

The old man found comfort in these moments—the salty air filling his lungs, the steady pull of the line, and the loyal presence of his little companion by his side. He scratched the dachshund’s head, grateful for the warmth of friendship that needed no words. Together, they sat watching the horizon, one casting lines into the sea, the other watching intently for any sudden splash.

Fishing wasn’t just about catching the quiet joy of the beach—man and dog, bound by trust, patience, and the rhythm of the ocean.

My Hints: Time to do some maintenance on those timber decks

Australians love their timber decks; unfortunately, they are exposed to a lot – intense UV and sun, heavy rain, backyard barbecues, leaf litter, bird droppings, and salt.

It’s easy to see why even the toughest timber deck can start to look worn over time. Irrespective of where you are, in the dry heat, coastal humidity, or shaded bushland, regular deck maintenance helps your timber stand up to the seasons. That’s why an annual timber deck maintenance spruce-up is important. A simple annual maintenance routine can go a long way in protecting your deck from weathering and wear.

It is easy to stay on top of your timber deck maintenance with products made for harsh Australian conditions. Clean it, protect it, and enjoy it year after year.

A well-maintained deck doesn’t just look better – it lasts longer. Make annual deck maintenance part of your outdoor routine and keep your deck in top shape, season after season. Talk to Maleny Paint Supplies to get all the best information to keep this efficient and simple.

WHAT MAKES A VALID WILL

PART 1?

With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

As the dear readers would already know, a Will is a document that sets out the wishes of a person regarding how that person’s estate should be distributed after death. I shall call the will-maker “the Testator” for the rest of this article.

For a Will to be valid, it must meet certain formal requirements as follows:

1. WRITING: The Will must be in writing. This means that it can be handwritten or typed. The same writing method – either handwriting or typed – must be used throughout the Will to avoid confusion. It can be made in any language, but it is obviously best if it is written in English to avoid problems of translation or interpretation.

2. SIGNED: It should be signed by the Testator making the Will. A signature can also be a mark in case the person signing the Will is blind or illiterate. In circumstances where the Testator is unable to mark or sign the Will, then someone else can sign on the Testator’s behalf, providing firstly that the Testator is present when the Will is signed and secondly, that this is disclosed in the Will.

3. DATED: The Will must be dated the day it was signed. Although a Will is effective from the date of the Testator’s death and not from the date of signing, the date of signing must appear on the Will. If the Will has no date, then the witnesses may be required to swear an affidavit about the date the Will was signed.

4. WITNESSES: The Testator’s signature must be witnessed by two witnesses who must both be present when the Testator signs. It is also important that a beneficiary not witness the Testator’s signature, as in a worst-case scenario, it could mean that any gift to that beneficiary is invalid.

In my next article, I shall discuss matters that should, rather than must, be contained in a Will.

Should you have any questions, please contact our office on 07 5494 3511 Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 17:00 AEST.

Take care everyone!

Australian magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) are among the most recognisable birds in Australia, thanks to their striking black-and-white feathers, intelligence, and perhaps most famously, their beautiful songs. Their unique behaviour and vocal traits have even led to people making friends with magpies.

Around this time of year, we have the magpie breeding season upon us. Whilst the official breeding season is from July to December with a peak in August–October, Magpies pair for life.

Magpies were one of the few native Australian birds to benefit from European settlement. The clearing of land for housing and farmland created a new landscape dominated by short grass and few trees—an ideal habitat for magpies.

When magpie eggs or young are in the nest, the dominant male magpie may show concern for his chicks by defending the territory from intruders, including other magpies, cats, and people. And while a magpie may swoop at a person, very few will do so, as people aren’t normally seen as a threat. Whilst being the subject of this swooping action can be terrifying, a magpie will swoop over your head, clacking its beak to freak you out. Usually, this is just a slightly over-the-top warning, so don't panic.

This aggressive period does not last for too long, as the young stay in the nest for only about four weeks.

Around this time of year, from time to time, we do hear of

magpies attacking people who get too close to chicks in nests.

The male magpie is responsible for most swoops, and the swooping is almost entirely limited to the magpie ‘defence zone’ – the area around the nest tree. While their territory is a few hectares, the defence zone is usually only about 100 metres in radius.

The Environmental Protection Agency supplied the following hints about how to avoid a magpie attack:

The magpie’s aim is to drive the perceived intruder away from the nest, not to cause injury. Leaving the area quickly almost always stops the swooping.

Stay well clear of areas where magpies are known to be swooping, particularly the nesting tree.

If you must enter the area, move through it quickly, but don’t run. Wear a hat and

sunglasses or carry an umbrella.

Cyclists should dismount and walk through the territory, which will reduce the chance of falling off the bike or swerving if a bird does swoop. Cyclists can also attach large cable ties to the back of their helmet – use two black ties, sticking up like antennae.

The magpie is an intelligent bird. The male will attack and drive off any animal likely to threaten its territory, nest, mate, or chicks. In its natural habitat, people are not seen as a threat. But in a suburban environment, this isn’t the case. Irresponsible actions such as throwing stones have made magpies think people are a potential threat during breeding season.

If you deliberately or accidentally provoke a magpie, you’re likely to be attacked.

Magpies are intelligent and curious birds that may explore your yard out of general interest. They are one of the few wild bird species that can recognise and remember individual human

See next Page

faces. And can remember humans for years” and can assess individual risk, choosing to either swoop or serenade based on past interactions.

Many Australians, including myself, can report magpies singing while perched nearby or following familiar people. This behaviour isn’t random; it’s a sign of recognition and possibly even affection by the magpie. They can be very friendly and social.

In places where magpies are treated well, some birds appear to sing around certain people. This may be their version of a greeting, part recognition, part trust, and perhaps even a way of bonding.

Magpies are an Australian icon and well-known for their flute-like songs. Their vocal skills allow them

to mimic over 35 species of native and introduced birds.

We have magpies come in and sit on the fence and sing their songs. They even bring their babies when they can fly to meet-ups with their friendly human neighbours.

If a magpie does not like you, you will soon know about it. Not all magpies are swoopers. However, during the spring breeding season (August to October), males may swoop in to protect their nests and this season usually lasts about 6-8 weeks.

Most people living in Queensland would have never felt the effects of a serious earthquake, but on Saturday, August 18th, at about 9.45a.m. one shook South East Queensland. However, thousands of residents reported feeling this quake, which had a magnitude of 5.6. No serious damage or injuries were reported.

This earthquake compares with an earthquake that on Thursday, 28 December 1989, and measured 5.6, struck Newcastle in New South Wales. At that time, it was one of Australia's most serious natural disasters, killing 13 people and injuring more than 160. The damage bill was estimated then at A$4 billion in 1989 figures.

It was quite disturbing as the house shook quite severely for about 3 to 5 seconds. It appeared as though a heavy vehicle may have run into the front of the house.

One local long-term matriarch was heard to say, “I have not felt the earth shake like that since my husband died 12 years ago.”

It was the strongest onshore earthquake in 50 years that rattled Queenslanders as they woke up on Saturday, with tremors felt from Hervey Bay all the way to parts of northern NSW.

Small aftershocks were felt by residents in the wake of this earthquake across south-east Queensland for several days.

Earthquakes are caused by movements underground that generate sound waves that travel through the Earth. They are most common and severe along the boundaries of huge slabs of rock that form the Earth's outer crust, called tectonic plates.

They are more common in Queensland than many people realise. We get stronger quakes — a magnitude of 5 or more — about every one to two years. The highest magnitude (of 6.6) earthquake ever recorded in Australia was at Tennant Creek, Northern Territory, in 1988.

When it comes to earthquake dangers, Australia is in a better position than other countries.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

This store was built for the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Assn & operated from 1911 - 1921. It was taken over by A M Hunt, then it became Myers & Hurst, Myers & Waddell, WJ Burnett (& son Rixon later) and in 1933 until 1961 it became Waddell’s Economy Store. If only parking was so readily available today as it was then!!!.
