Dear Members old and new and welcome to the start of the new season. Let us hope that it will be a more healthy one for all of us. Once again, our thanks must go to our hard working Chairman Steve Brown and his Committee for all of the work they have been doing during the close season.
I would like to mention our friends from Drapers Farm Sports Club and Maldon Rugby Club, it’s important that we all support each other during the current situation.
Here's hoping for an enjoyable summer of sport in 2023 and hopefully lots of MCC wins to celebrate.
Yours in sport, John Hill

Another season passes us by and to be honest, for most it was a year of frustration and not much on field success. Let me firstly say that I wish to thank each and every one of you for your efforts for the club, both on and off the field.
The youth side of the club is thriving under the guidance of Simon Hull, Dan Docherty and Tristan Webb (particularly Tristan who put aside some personal ill health to give our youngsters as much cricket as possible. Two notable youth mentions were Joe Hazell who represented Essex Under 11’s and Sophia Mitchell who has been selected for Essex Under 18’s. Congratulations to both, a fabulous achievement for all concerned.
It would be remiss of me to not mention at this point the superb performance of our under 16’s to get to the semi-finals of the Trevor Bailey Matchplay Shield, losing out to a very good Shenfield side in a hard fought game on a hot day at Drapers.
A great reflection of the hard work of a few good people, this needs to be an area where we improve as a club, the future of the club looks secure but these youngsters need senior players to take an interest in them and coach them, mentor them, watch them and be there with advice and a friendly word. Let me set this as a task – can you help out, can you support our youth side in 2023? Furthermore colts cricket needs to be raised in your timeline.
Thanks as usual go out to so many people, I hope I haven’t left anyone out. The committee who organise so much and give up their time for you. All team captains in 2022, Toby, Liam, Joe, Andy, Jazzy B, Bethan, Paul Gregory, we thank you for your time, phone calls, organisation skills and general patience in a frustrating year.
To Martin Davies for keeping us in drinks and for being good enough to laugh of times when we have not communicated to you and for being flexible to adapt timings. Thanks go to Bethan Bailey too for ably assisting you. To president John Hill and wife Maureen, thank you for your continued support, guidance and generosity.
To our main sponsors TFP we thank you for your continued sponsorship. We thank all other club sponsors and friends. We thank our groundsman Laurence, all our scorers, parents, supporters and umpires.
Congratulations to all our award winners last year too- well done! Let me finish with 3 key messages:
We have listened as a committee to feedback, and have put in place an overseas player for this year - Connah comes highly recommended from New Zealand, Welcome Connah! He is here to improve playing standards but he is also here to support our coaching set up throughout the club, at all ages, group sessions and individual coaching. But, even though we have the finances in place to do this, we must all endeavour to support events that we put on to replenish club funds in order to have an overseas player next year! I implore you to get involved at every opportunity and we will provide you with club events to attend, but we need your money and support please.
Secondly, last season was a tale of poor availability. It is your teammates who you let down when you cancel your availability at the last minute (e.g. Friday or Saturday morning) and if it leads to a cancelation of a game, it leads to wasted money on pitches and fines to leagues which come out of the clubs coffers. We know that cricket should not stop you doing other things with your families, but if you sign up for a season with subs, why are you cancelling last minute? Commit to what you say, make your captains life easier and will get you cricket, as much as you want. Thank you.
Thirdly, it continues to be an honour to chair this club into the coming season. We are a great family club but we could do a little more to galvanise relationships between all levels of the club and I’m looking forward to more of you supporting out colts in the coming season and putting yourself forward in order to help and support the club. To this end we need to appoint 2 new members to the Drapers committee to be our voices and to be inside any decision making that may affect us, so if your interested in attending meeting once a month and supporting, please let me know.
Exciting plans are in motion for beyond this year, so Happy Cricket in 2023 all, lets make this a great season and look forward to many bright tomorrows!
After a 7th place finish in the previous season and with the potential overseas player falling through a couple of weeks before the season started it was very much the intention to stabilise our position in Division One whilst developing some younger players. Unfortunately we were only able to achieve one of these aims in a testing season. Despite constant issues with availability and a series of injuries which meant we rarely if ever had our strongest side out, it was a season where they were too many games when as a team we were only able to perform in one of the three disciplines. This meant that despite being in contention in several games we too often came up short with a combination of poor batting, bowling or fielding displays. As mentioned before we were able to introduce some of our younger players into the first team with Finlay and Angus showing not only resilience and perseverance but the ability to take wickets, consistently improve, learn and also impress opposing captains and players who commented on their bright futures. I have no doubt that along with a few other youngsters such as Henry, Oli, Jamie and Rufus in our ranks they will play an important part in the first team’s future.
As mentioned before we were often unable to put bowling, batting and fielding performances together which was a shame because there were some excellent individual performances. With the bat Ross grew in confidence as the season progressed and in my opinion was unlucky not to cash in on several occasions where he had made a solid start. He also supported Elmo in our first victory of the season against Worlington. They put on 132 for a match winning partnership with Elmo dominating the Worlington attack scoring 88 not out. Max ended the season with four consecutive fifties just falling short of a hundred against both Coggeshall and Clacton. I look forward to him continuing this form in this forthcoming season. Martyn fell agonisingly short of a hundred by getting into the nineties twice. The Wivenhoe performance being particularly memorable as he took part in a partnership of 152 with Harry rescuing us from 74 for 6. Typically though we fell 16 runs short despite this heroic effort. Our only century came from Ando with a destructive 107 against Coggeshall. It was great to see him achieve this and everyone was so pleased for him as it was well deserved.
With the ball as with the batting there was a lack of consistency. Spells that stand out were Wildo’s opening spell against Kesgrave where he had them 13 for 3. Unfortunately we couldn’t back him up on this day as was typical of our season. Elmo, Keith and Martyn contributed with wickets throughout the season and Harry also stepped up when needed not only in the field where he set the standard but with the ball, 3 wickets against Halstead being his highlight but probably the stand out spell was in the last game of the season where Sam Collins ripped through the Wivenhoe batting line up with 5 for 29 only for the game to be abandoned when we were on top. It was the only game unfinished in the whole season.
In a challenging season I could always rely on a number of the boys for their support and efforts. The old guard of Jimmy, Elmo, Cokes, Wildo, Ando and Gibbo were a constant support to me, thank you boys. Despite the season not going our way it was brilliant to see us fighting till the end. The performance against Wivenhoe in our last game of the season was excellent. Other sides who have been relegated have often wilted and given up in recent years. We did not, which I was very proud of. At this point I would like to give a special mention to Alex whose attitude both on the field and off the field was outstanding always putting the team first.
Congratulations to Elmo on representing Essex Over 50’s which resulted in a trophy in his first season with them. It has also been brilliant to hear about Finley (Essex) and Angus (Suffolk) getting county recognition over the winter.
I would also like to thank our scorers this season, unfortunately injuries being an asset in this case as Statto returned to playing duties. With my daughter Jessica helping to start the season whilst recovering from a knee injury. Reece with a more serious knee injury also helped us out when he was allowed to drive along with the returning Sheep, Jessica the ladies captain and even Keith’s mum at Clacton. Thank you to you all.
In a tough season I never felt a lack of support both on the pitch but also off it at any time which I really appreciated. I would like to thank Brownie and Joe in particular but a special mention also has to go to our legendary club president John Hill, a couple of chats we had during the summer really meant a lot to me. What a top man and not just because he gets the drinks in!
My parting words after three years of enjoyable but challenging captaincy go to two men first Ross the rightful player of the year whose dedication to the cause was exceptional. I am confident he will bring a lot to the team as the new captain and wish him well and my support.
Lastly many thanks go to Ando who has called it a day for the time being, since being our overseas player in 2016 he has been a wellrespected and leading player on the field. During his seven seasons, one of which was performing as a secret agent, he claimed over 120 wickets, over 2000 runs with 2 league hundreds and over 70 dismissals in the field. We have all loved having weapon around the changing room and I know he won’t be a stranger. Thank you for all your efforts especially as my vice-captain.
Next season the target is instant promotion and I am sure with our new captain, up and coming players and a few new additions including our new overseas Connah this will be accomplished.
Up the Dons.
The second team finished a creditable eighth in the league with nine wins during the course of the summer.
The highlights of the summer was beating Needham Market twice. At Drapers, we set them 217 with Shinn getting 44 and Finn Jones scoring 38. Going into the final over, Needham needed 5 to win. In a dramatic over, Luke Reeve took 3 wickets and a run out as we secured a 3 run win. In the return game, Archie Wright scored 145 hitting the ball repeatedly into the building site with yours truly getting 73.
We also did the double over Worlington with James Ellis getting his first second team century and Al Johnson getting 4/53 in a narrow 19 run victory at Drapers.
Matt Shinn helping us defeat Brockley with 81 not out. It was a shame to be without Ben Gibbons and Matt Shinn for the majority of the summer. Mike Smith, Joe Figg, Jamie Brown, Ollie Hull and Stuart Coker had moments in their contrasting styles with the bat. Smudger 62 at Eight Ash Green will live long in the memory. Whilst Joe and Jamie shared the twos highest partnership of the year at Nowton.
The bowling was weakened by the loss of Keith Sharp to the petrol station and first team duties. Jack Riley added subtlety to the bowling attack when available. The availability problems throughout the year led to us blooding a lot of youngsters in the twos.
Callum Figg showed his development over the course of the summer. Rufus and Henry Miller both bowled with a lot of heart and both showed great potential for the future. It was also good to see the development of Finn and Angus into the first team squad. Josh Servis impressed as well, whilst a massive thank you is due to Anthony Servis efforts at Hadleigh.
My thanks go to Charlie and all of the players who have played over the past 4 years.
Good luck to Gibbo for the forthcoming year.
In 2022 we shared frustration with the rest of the club with limited player availability and on-field success. However, this was to be expected as we were planning to continue our foundation-building for future seasons.
We got very close to a win at High Roding in our first match – missing out by just one wicket – but our team’s lack of experience showed during the rest of the season. However, we did not concede any matches, which was a marked improvement on the previous year! There were also some solid performances from all of the ladies throughout.
Player of the Year – Emma Charnock (née Herron). Excellent all-round performance, with 3 catches, 3 wickets and 73 runs.
Bowler of the Year – Bethan Bailey. Best figures 3-18, with 3-9 in a friendly match later in the season.
Most Improved – Sarah Welton. Accurate throws contributing to a number of runouts (and near-misses!), and some excellent batting near the end of the season. Batter of the Year – Jess Walton. Self-proclaimed, because I had a few decent batting performances and couldn’t give Bethan two trophies!
We had a couple of good results in the two indoor leagues over the winter and hope to build our skills further during indoor training for the start of the 2023 season. This new season sees a new league format, a couple of new players joining us, and potentially a few old ones returning. However, we are still in need of more players so will continue with recruitment activities for the foreseeable future.
I decided to step down as captain for the 2023 season due to work commitments. Bethan was the obvious choice to take over, and I am sure she will do an amazing job!
Jess WaltonThe threes had a tail of two halves summer. The first eight week were very good and at the end of this period we were equal second. However the season unravelled as the availability difficulties in the firsts and seconds meant that the threes changed significantly each week. We used 51 players throughout the summer and we never saw Smudger at all during the summer. These availability difficulties led to us being relegated by two points on the final day of the season.
The season started with us winning at Woolpit. We amassed 308-8 off our 45 overs aided by 108 extras and Alex Strong's 40. We ran out winners by 14 runs in the gathering gloom of mid April. We won the following week as well against West Mersea thanks to Matt Shinn 63 and 4 wicket haul.
Wins continued in May and June by defeating Copford with Luke Sanders 5-29 and Keith Sharp being critical 4-31. Haverhill were beaten by yours truly 62, David Richardson 52 not out and Richard Buckby before Mike Newman 4-48 off 12 overs displaying cunning and guile. We then went on a ten game losing streak including tight defeats to West Bergholt, Chappell and Copford despite Andy Barnes taking 2 wickets. On the last day of the season we visited Tendring needing a win to stay up. However in one of the driest summer on record. Rain intervened and the match was abandoned.
I feel the benefit will be for my successor as more youngsters were blooded last year into threes cricket including Josh Lawes, Josh Servis, Charlie Figg, Henry Miller. The biggest highlight of my captaincy has been the progression of Angus, Finn, Ollie, Luke, Henry, Sam and Callum into our ones and twos with moments of significant success for each year.
I would like to thank Hannah for putting up with me playing captain and the players and other captains for their support during a difficult year.
a few decent batting performances and couldn’t give Bethan two trophies!
As always, 2022 started with high expectations, five age groups sides across the district leagues and three entries into the prestigious Essex competitions. The season started slowly with the ever lengthening football season impacting availability, an issue that continues to frustrate all clubs but gradually fixtures gathered momentum and thankfully no excuse with the weather all summer.
75% of all fixtures were completed across the leagues, all sides producing mixed results and finishing mid table, but players were able to enjoy a decent amount of cricket at all levels. Cup runs were disappointing, the U11s conceding, unable to field a team, something we must avoid next year with the 13s and 15s both losing in early rounds.
The county competitions were a different story. The U12 Brian Taylor Trophy side were unbeaten in their qualifying group and despite losing a very close game in the quarter finals should be extremely proud of their individual and more importantly collective performances.
The U16 Trevor Bailey Matchplay team were able to go one better. Having won the qualifying group undefeated, there followed a solid quarter final win before losing out in the semi final to a very strong Shenfield side, the eventual winners. Every match produced some fine individual performances but the team spirit throughout this competition was extraordinary, especially given the extreme temperatures in which all these matches were played. All involved should be proud of their achievement.
Colts were well represented across our senior sides again this year, including the first team proof of a successful structure that creates a pathway for players to develop and progress from junior teams into adult cricket and we hope, a lifelong affiliation with Maldon Cricket Club.
As we look ahead to 2023 we aim to build on our successes whilst always looking for ways to improve. Our primary intention remains unchanged, to provide an environment that allows all players to develop their cricket skills whilst at the same time making new friends, being part of a team and most importantly having fun.
Our intention for 2023 remains as always, to build and grow our Colts sides to ensure we maintain a solid pathway through the age groups and provide the quantity and quality of cricket we have always expected as a club for our young players and should continue to deliver.
Training will run for all age groups each Friday evening from 28 April to the end of August with a structured coaching environment delivered by our overseas player and supported by age group managers. This is a superb opportunity for all our young players to enhance their skills and I am grateful to Connah for his generous offer, but this does require a commitment from all players to attend training if they wish to take full value from his coaching.
U9 - U11 6.15pm - 7.15pm - U13 - U15 6.30pm - 7.45pm
We encourage parents to stay and watch these sessions in a social environment with the bar open, a great start to the weekend.
All age groups have been entered into the Central Essex District League and Cup competitions. We also have entries into the Essex County competitions with an U12 side in the Brian Taylor Trophy, an U14 side in the Alastair Cook T20 Trophy and an U16 side in the Trevor Bailey Matchplay Shield. We are also very excited by a new U13 Development League with eight clubs from across the county and I am proud on behalf of Maldon CC to have been part of the conception of this new event. I encourage all club members to show their support for these teams, especially at home fixtures.
The club is always keen to welcome new players, especially across our U7 - U9 age group and at U11. If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining the club, please ask them to contact me directly or any of the Colt’s Management Team.
I would like to thank the parent volunteers who take the role of age group managers and those who assist on match days but make no apology in asking for more support. Each age group needs 2 comanagers to share responsibility and we should not have to rely on the same few individuals. It is a very rewarding experience and will enable us to enhance the cricket available to our players and ease the pressure on those who already give up so much of their time to deliver cricket to young people.
On behalf of the Colt’s Management Team at Maldon CC, we are looking forward to seeing you all and excited at the potential for a great season of cricket with a fantastic group of young players.
The 2022 was an odd season for the 4th XI with the majority of the 2021 side playing for the third and second XI for much of the season. Unfortunately, this inevitably meant that several games were conceded.
The side won 2 fixtures during the season, both against West Mersea 2s. The team had several captains throughout the season and we would like to thank Paul Gregory and Jas Baines for captaining the side regularly throughout the season.
Noticeable performances with the bat were Lee Vickers with a high score of 84 and Charlie Figg with 60 not out. Paul Gregory also performed well averaging 34. With the ball Jas Baines took 11 wickets.

As always, I look upon being Captain of the Sunday team as an Honour and Privilege, to play and be part of our excellent Maldon Cricket Club. The Sunday Team enjoyed competitive cricket for the first time having entered the Warsop League in 2022. With 18 teams in the competition, we finished a commendable eighth having won several games. More pleasing in the league was that 2 of our very talented youngsters won awards from the league and were recognised at the End of Season Warsops Meeting: -
Jamie Brown won the Batter award finishing with the best average in the competition with an incredible 98. Jamie was also awarded the Maldon CC Sunday Batter for 2022. Callum Figg won the Bower award finishing off as the leagues leading wicket taker with 15 which included 2 5 wicket hauls. Callum was also awarded the Maldon CC Sunday Bowler for 2022.
Overall including friendlies, we played 10 games throughout the season and won 60% of the matches which again was very pleasing to all concerned. Notable achievements to the ones already mentioned are as follows:
Luke Reeve continues to improve with every game and finished off with 262 runs with an average of 65.50 & took 4 catches in the outfield as well as chipping in with his off spin blowing.
Stato’s legendary spin bowling continues to bamboozle opposition batters – he too 16 wickets and contributed 186 with the bat also.
The most pleasing win for the team has to be the game away to Great Baddow. They batted 1st and scored 186. The chase started well with but somehow, we were 9 down by the end of the 16th over and still needed the nest part of a hundred runs. However, the 9th wicket pair of myself and Jim Gregory pulled off the miracle with Jim scoring a sensational 86 runs under extreme pressure.
The Sunday Team is essentially a development consisting of youngsters and the old war horses like myself who continue to put their aging bodies through the pain barrier for the love of our great game. I would like to thank the 40 pluses - Paul Gregory, Rupert Baker, Joe Figg, Mike Newman for regularly turning up to play and develop the up-and-coming younger members of the club.
The champagne moment of the season goes to Rupert Baker, not a bowler by trade but was given the opportunity to bowl against Terling. He took a wicket with his 3rd ball and was duly mobbed by the entire team on the pitch. I think we can now safely say that Rupert is the club’s newest All Rounder. The 2023 season is I believe going to be another exciting season. As well as playing friendly games we have entered the Warsop Sunday League once again for competitive cricket again. As the club expands, I look forward to seeing more youngsters join the club, develop, and harness their cricketing talent as well as seeing the older members continue playing for the love of our great game.
I’m signing off now but looking forward to seeing you all again soon and of course taking the field with you all in 2023 with the aim of having a lot of fun, playing cricket, winning games, making memories and of course having a laugh in the bar after the game.
