As you’ll have gathered form the not-so-subtle front cover this is the 80th edition of the Village Voice and a bumper one to boot. Founded by my predecessor Mandy Mardell in November 2005, with a print run of 2,000 copies we now print 7,000 each month and deliver to around 12,000 different homes in the KT3 area over a 2 month period. Coincidentally, our sister magazine Worcester Park Life is also celebrating this month with its 4th anniversary – where has the time gone! So a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed this month and the other 79 issues and to all of our wonderful advertisers without who we would not be still publishing today. I have just discovered the wonder of qr codes. A much needed voice for our village
Local author Carl Sims reviews the Village Voice… What were you doing in November 2005? Having looked in my diary I had done some decorating (but no mention of what), celebrated eldest daughter’s birthday (expensive), had my car serviced (arm and a leg), was quite busy as a freelance business mentor (not so much now) and on the 5th Nov explaining to a new neighbour why upon the eve of their arrival I let off an unruly rocket which landed in their garden, exploding with some flurry plus a great deal of noise (similar to small bomb). As you may know, November 2005 was the date of the first edition of Village Voice. It’s certainly an achievement to have produced so many since then, even more when you consider the local events that have filled them – all connected with the place we’ve chosen to live… Which brings me rather neatly to a recent longweekend away to Devon. On the journey there we stopped, as usual, at Stockbridge; a lovely village with a wide main street and accompanying stream that flows alongside. I refer to Stockbridge now because we picked up their local magazine. Like our Village Voice it has a plethora of information and quickly portrays the ‘feel’ of the place. You achieve an immediate appreciation and complete understanding of the village with just a few flicks of a page. If ever you were thinking of moving there, or indeed anywhere else, a prerequisite must be; read the local mag and get a flavour! The Village Voice achieves all the above in abundance as well as promoting local trades people. As we all know we need local trades or we all just visit the big supermarket or use bigger companies for sometimes just the simplest requirement. Indeed, as austerity measures hit, we should support them – large corporations will survive but the smaller niche locals will suffer. Where would we get keys cut, shoes repaired, clothes dry-cleaned, cars fixed, gardens maintained, hair cut, fence built, curtains made – or find a decent butcher, electrician, solicitor or playgroup for our children? The list is endless but these local trades and neighbourhood groups are the lifeblood of our community. Unlike other local ‘magazines’,Village Voice also offers, in every edition, a superb reflection on New Malden’s history clearly establishing a provenance – also an up-to-date view on current fiscal affairs, as well as
ad-hoc articles on everything from antiques, to local schools. Indeed, the Village Voice gives the newcomer a comprehensive view of our village - for the existing resident a continuous up-date of life and events in New Malden. Plenty of reasons to celebrate, in this year of celebrations, our quintessential local magazine:Village Voice, and for us to reflect what makes New Malden just a little bit different. Celebrating the First Elizabeth This year’s Diamond Jubilee will be a time for celebrating the reign of a remarkable woman. Elizabeth II became Queen in 1952 and throughout her sixty years on the throne has shown a dedication, tenacity and above all, sense of duty that all of us have benefited from. Street parties, a public holiday and an enjoyment of all that uniquely British pageantry will rightly be the order of the day. As part of these festivities, Christ Church New Malden will be holding an evening to celebrate the reign of another remarkable woman whose outstanding success as this country’s monarch blazed a trail for our current Queen. Elizabeth I became Queen in 1558 and, in an age when few believed women capable of leadership, established herself over the next forty five years as arguably the finest leader this country has ever possessed. On 30th May at 8pm Christ Church will host an evening entitled ‘Celebrating the First Elizabeth’. Admission will be free and everyone is welcome. Our speaker will be Dr Tracy Borman. A member of Christ Church and resident of New Malden, Tracy is fast becoming one of Britain’s most dynamic historians with a string of successful books on a variety of subjects. These include King’s Mistress, Queen’s Servant: The Life
and Times of Henrietta Howard (the mistress of George II) and Matilda: Wife of the Conqueror (on the wife of William I). Coauthor of Royal Weddings from 1066-2011, Tracy has regularly appeared on television and radio and is currently writing a book on witchcraft during the reign of James I (most of which she is penning in Chicco's cafe!). In 2009 Tracy also produced the groundbreaking book Elizabeth’s Women. Up to that point, historians had tended to focus upon Elizabeth I’s relationships with the men who dominated the world in which she lived such as Philip II of Spain, the Earls of Leicester and Essex and her ministers such as William Cecil and Francis Walsingham. There was also comparative neglect of the factors that formed Elizabeth, with many rather tempted to see her as ‘born great’. Both of these approaches were startlingly challenged by Elizabeth’s Women as Tracy focused upon the women whose

influence shaped Elizabeth I. Uncovering vital new evidence, the book examined the role of those close to her such as her beloved governess Kat Astley, the influence of her various stepmothers, particularly Katherine Parr, and what the young Elizabeth learned about how not to be a queen from her sister Mary Tudor and Mary Queen of Scots. Jubilations (Part 3) Sports and carnivals by Robin Gill One jubilee celebration often ignored by historians was the Silver Jubilee of George V and Queen Mary in 1935. One of us This was never to be the case in Malden, where Mary was regarded as a local, having been brought up in the Coombe area, and attending St Johns church in Kingston Vale. The occasion saw Malden Road (High Street) decorated from Alric Avenue right the way to Kingston Road. The cost of the bunting and garlands came to ÂŁ87 13 shillings (65 pence) paid for by the local council. The main focus for the merrymaking was a gathering in Beverley Park on Monday 6th May at which twelve thousand people attended. 5000 free programmes were available for the children, whilst adults had to pay 6d (2.5 pence) for their souvenir of the day. Additionally 3600 jubilee mugs were bought at a cost of 3 shillings and 4d a dozen by the council for distribution free to the youngsters via their head teachers. The plan of events included childrens sports from 2.30pm
to 4pm with an inscribed silver cup being presented to the winner of the boys (over 13) 100 yards race. This was won by K Slade. The children also enjoyed a funfair which had been erected in the park. Meanwhile the adults could watch a cricket match between the council and New Malden Cricket Club with the players dressed in 18th century complete with wigs and three cornered hats. Underarm bowling and only two stumps making the wicket ensured the match ended in a draw. For those with an eye for a well turned ankle, there was a contest judged by the Mayor (Gerard Petit) and the Town Clerk (James Johnson) to find the prettiest ankles in Malden (won by Mrs Fairs). This together with a display from the Maldens and Coombe branch of the Womens League of Health and Beauty took us to 4pm when tea was served to 3000 children and all listened to the Kings broadcast on the radio relayed by speakers across the park. From 6pm dancing took place to the music of the Malden and Coombe branch of the British Legion Dance Band, followed by entertainment from a local concert party. On the following Thursday, the council chamber (now Waitrose) became a ballroom for a dinner and dance, while other rooms in the council offices became drinks areas and lounges. Around 100 people were invited (mainly councillors and council employees).Various toasts were proposed and drunk, and congratulations in the form of a telegram was sent to the King and Queen by the chairman Mr EA Weeks. The hope was expressed at the dinner that the next time they would meet in similar circumstances would be if and when Malden became a borough. The events of the day in Beverley Park had been photographed and captured in an album which would be included in the submission process for incorporation. Thanks giving services were held at the various churches in the area with the council attending one held at St James, walking in procession with other groups including the Fire Brigade (with engine) , British Legion, and Scouts and Guides, from the council offices to the church. Silver celebrations Forty two years later, Malden was ready for another jubilee celebration (Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee), and this started in March 1977 when pupils from Burling ton Road School help the Mayor plant 10 rowan trees. Special Jubilee Crowns had been minted that year, but these soon ran out as Malden was caught up with excitement for the occasion and the various High Street banks had to order hundreds more. The Rotary Club organised a fete at Manor Park where many of the local groups and charities were invited to run stalls. The fete was opened by Councillor Frank Steptoe, and the newly crowned Jubilee Beauty Queen (Fiona Sullivan) was present. Several thousand people attended to visit the stalls and see displays by the Coombe Gymnastics Club,

Golden days The 2002 Golden Jubilee celebrations started with a festival at the Milaap Day Centre in Green Lane, with Indian music and American line dancing. Around the local schools the children were encouraged to dress in red white and blue or as Kings and queens. Some children also dressed as children from the Coronation year (1953). On the bank Holiday Monday at the beginning of June, there was a “community fun day” at Grand Avenue Primary and Emmanuel Church, with entertainment from the Kingston Schools band, and an exhibition of crafts by local residents. Christchurch Junior School received a visit from a theatre group who put on a play looking back on the last fifty years including contributions from around 40 pupils. The Golden Jubilee was taken up as the Theme for Malden Fortnight with the Grand parade led by the Kingston and Malden Scout and Guide Band. The procession included around 22 floats and walkers dressed in appropriate costumes. The parade attracted about 2000 spectators waving Union flags and cheering. The float from Burlington Junior School won the schools trophy for best float and the float from the Acacia Grove playgroup was highly commended. The Malden Centre was open for face painting and the family” Splash and Games” while the
the local ATC, the Company of Sixty (archers in medieval costume) St Johns Ambulance and the band of the Horse Rangers. The beginning of June also saw the start of the first street parties with 65 children being entertained in Glebe Gardens, many more parties followed, and Egmont Road won 2nd prize in a borough wide contest to find the best dressed street. Many small industries in Malden provided items for the Jubilee; in Chestnut Grove the moulding firm of Adrian merchant produced coronets and coats of arms in fibreglass and Rainbow Designs in the High Street made more than a million badges showing the Queen and Prince Philip. July 16th was the day of the carnival, which included a procession through the town, followed by a barbeque and disco at the New Searchlight Youth Club. The parade started at Wellington Crescent at 4pm and travelled via the Triangle to the High Street. By the time it reached the old council offices (then an adult education centre) the number of floats, cars and bicycles had reached 60. They were reviewed by the mayor (Doris Stepping) watched by hundreds of spectators. Highlights of the parade included both the Beverley Boys and the Jubilee Queen who travelled in horse drawn landaus.

fire fighters in Burlington Road opened their doors to the public and gave demonstrations on how to deal with blazes at home. Other events in the Fortnight included a garden party at the offices of Pearson Maddin in Kingston Road, and the Charity Craft fair the following Saturday. All proceeds raised during the fortnight were donated to the Warren Park Centre in Kingston for children with physical disabilities. As can be seen from the history of Jubilee celebrations in Malden from 1887-2002 children have always been at the forefront of the festivities, however the adults have not been slow in showing their affection and loyalty. The early inhabitants also felt a need to leave some sort of legacy either in bricks and mortar form (St Johns Institute) or a service (Nursing Institute). The legacy became the planting of trees in later years. The children were also presented with a memento of the occasion (medal or mug) either by the Council or another governing body. This together with a free tea ,and fun and games have made these events, normally held in the warm summertime, a day to remember for the younger generation in Malden over the last 125 years.

by Justin Urquhart Stewart The French have a new one, The Russians have an old one, And the Greeks haven’t got one at all! I appreciate that this could apply to many things such as economic policies, fashion sense or even kettles for all I know. However, my brain was heading towards those trying to find some effective leadership. Maybe the changes of last weekend might just be the catalyst for change that we have been waiting for to finally get things moving in Euroland and to try and break this seemingly intractable euro impasse. A combination of some Hollandaise on a tossed Greek salad may actually herald, not necessarily a wholesale change in policy but rather one of a change of emphasis. Although the ‘austerity pact’ may be sacrosanct to the German Chancellor, there is no reason why an encouraging growth ingredient cannot be added to the mix. This if not a perfect economic recipe for recovery, would be politically astute and reflect a level of empathy with popular frustrations. It would be

seen at least to be providing some confidence in future growth rather than the bleak picture laid out by some - many including our own dear leaders. So with Greece continuing to be a mess and with a Euro exit (subset or suspension) or even a coup at the extreme, looking like possible options, France becomes the more important issue. If a ‘growth’ policy can be allied to the current austerity agreement and potentially create the necessary confidence for central bond purchases, then a route for stabilisation and eventual recovery appears on the horizon. Perhaps action via such bodies as the European Investment Bank could provide the basis of a growth plan, whilst still ensuring that the disciplines of the austerity package are maintained. Now maybe there is a shaft of light – albeit I grant you a thin one. Another positive sign has come from the Bundesbank, who have a deserved reputation of being one of the most cautious central banks, that they may be willing to accept a higher level of inflation. This may seem wholly normal to the British where we positively revel in reasonable inflation, but for the Germans, fear of inflation is deep in the national psyche as a result of the 1920’s period of financial decimation caused by hyperinflation. Their view now though seems to be that limited inflation as part of the economic rebalancing within the Eurozone could help the most indebted nations. This however, is not going to allow any huge change, as for many German workers it is they who have been improving their productivity with controlled wages, whereas other nations’ workers have been profligate in the boom times and wasted their great opportunity of lower interest rates by paying themselves out of all proportion to their effectiveness. Additionally, Mrs Merkel will be watching the local polls in North Rhine Westphalia where 13 million voters go to the polls. Although these are not national, it is the most populous state and is being seen by many as a proxy general election, preparing the way for the real thing in 2013.

Party in the park Cool Britannia is back…and the flags will be flying in Beverley Park on Saturday 2 June! By royal approval (well, The Royal Borough of Kingston!) the residents (and friends) of the Beverley Park area have once again been granted permission to hold a ‘street party’ in the grounds of BP (that’s Beverley Park, not Buckingham Palace!) - this time to officially celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Recipe Pan-fried Mackerel Fillet with Lemon Spring Vegetables • 25g butter • 1 banana shallot, peeled and sliced • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed • 400g mixed fresh vegetables like broad beans, carrots, peas, spring greens, broccoli • 100ml stock • Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper • 150g creme fraiche • 3-4 sprigs dill, roughly chopped • 1/2 tbsp olive oil •2 large mackerel fillets Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it
starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes. Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillet in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side. Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes..

Santa appeals to save the Christmas lights in New Malden High Street
The existing Christmas lights in New Malden High Street have reached the end of their life, some of the brackets have broken and the tungsten lamps are becoming obsolete. The Rotary Club of New Malden and The Malden Fortnight Committee are launching an appeal to be able to replace the lights in time for Christmas 2012. So far a fund of £7,000 has been raised towards the new lights, but this leaves a shortfall of £5, 000, so local residents, schools, clubs and businesses are being asked to make a one off contribution by either arranging a fund raising event or donating whatever they can afford. Each year the cost of erecting the lights, their maintenance and energy cost is met by a grant from the Royal Borough of Kingston plus generous donations from local businesses. President of the Rotary Club of New Malden, Tony Townsend commented “ We believe the Christmas lights help form part of the great community spirit that exists in New Malden and are particularly important for the children to enjoy during December” Donations can be made by cheques payable to The Rotary Club of New Malden at Barclays Bank in the High Street (Sort Code 20-46-73 account no 33513882) or by post to The Rotary Club of New Malden, 21, Nelson Road, New Malden KT35EA. Spotlight on... Siobhan Benita Siobhan Benita is a New Malden Resident who was a senior Civil Servant until January of this year when she resigned to stand as an independent candidate in the Mayor of London election. In the final result, Siobhan received almost 300,000 votes and came a very close fifth, beating the established Liberal Democrat and Green party candidates in many wards; an achievement which many commentators and politicians have hailed as remarkable for an individual who was previously unknown. Now that the dust has settled, Siobhan reflects on the campaign and also tells Village Voice how she feels about living in New Malden. What motivated you to stand in the mayoral election? It was a very big decision for me to leave a successful career in the Civil Service to run for election – and there were many factors that led to me making such a life-changing decision. After 15 years working in Whitehall right at the centre of Government I had become increasingly disillusioned with our party-political system and I was finding it harder and harder to remain impartial, something you have to be as a good civil servant. I was particularly uncomfortable working in the Department of Health, where I had been since autumn of 2009, because I didn’t support the NHS reforms. I believe that we need a more diverse range of public leaders in this country – people with different life and professional experiences and who can bring new ideas and perspectives into policy decisions. At the moment, too many of our politicians – in all of the established parties - come from privileged backgrounds, they have not had others careers and that often means that aren’t as in touch with the public as they need to be. Having two daughters of my own was also a factor for me. We don’t have enough women in politics in the UK and I want my girls to grow up in a society where they see that women as well as men hold senior positions and do shape public life. Finally, I ran as an independent candidate because I strongly believe that the Mayor of London should not be party political. When the public vote for the Mayor they are voting for an individual leader, not a political party, and I’m frustrated by the fact that we seem to have fallen into an assumption that the candidates have to come from one of the main political parties. An independent Mayor will be less distracted by party political arguments and will be

able to do what is best for London without having to tow any party lines. What did you enjoy/didn’t you enjoy about the process? Standing in the election was the best thing I have ever done professionally. I enjoyed almost every minute of the campaign and learnt so much during the process. I met amazing people in every London borough doing tremendous work in their communities - that was a very humbling experience at times. I have always been proud to call myself a Londoner but after four months of campaigning and getting to know London in even greater detail, I am more sure than ever than this really is the greatest, most tolerant and fascinating city on earth. Without a shadow of a doubt though, the biggest hindrance to my campaign was the out-of- date broadcasting rules. The rules broadly dictate that the amount of television coverage that a candidate is given during the election period is based on the results of their political party at the last election – a wholly inappropriate measure for a new independent like me who doesn’t belong to a party and who did not stand in the last election. These rules meant that, despite being an official candidate, I was given scant TV coverage compared to the political party candidates and, crucially, I was not invited to take part in the main mayoral TV debates which have a major impact on the public perception of who the key players are. The rules also meant that I was the only candidate who was not permitted an election broadcast - all of the others (even the BNP) were automatically granted one simply because they represented a political party. Battling the broadcasters on a daily basis to try and get even a tiny amount of coverage was the thing I didn’t enjoy about the process. What do you like about Living in New Malden? I’ve lived in this area all of my life so I can’t imagine anywhere else being home! I love the fact that I can be right in the centre of London in less than half an hour but at the same time I have Richmond Park and the Surrey countryside within 10minutes in the other direction. Having the best of both worlds makes New Malden a lovely place to live and I appreciate this even more now that I have children of my own. As I discovered during the campaign, every borough in London has a distinct feel and personality. New Malden does still have a village feel about it but at the same time it has adapted well to new people and communities coming into the area over the years. My own mum immigrated to London from India in 1958 when she was 10 years old and the New Malden residents welcomed her and her family and looked after them in their first weeks and months here. Nowadays, you only have to walk up the high street to see how

diverse the area is – you can eat anything from fish and chips to sushi or curry. I really like that diversity and how friendly the area feels overall. Are there any things you don’t like? My daughters are 12 and 13 years old and it would be good if there were more activities for children of that age range in the local area. We also need better cycling lanes – cycle safety was a big issue during the election but the discussions were often limited to cycling issues for commuters in the inner boroughs. That’s a real shame because in an outer borough area like New Malden with so many families it would also make an enormous difference if children and adults could cycle safely to school or for general sport and leisure purposes. So, now that the campaign in over what are your plans? I’d really like to stay in London politics so I am thinking through what my options are and exactly how I build on the support that I secured during the campaign. What’s been very encouraging for me is the amount of messages and offers of help that I have had since the election from people who want me to run again in 2016 and who would like to actively support me going forward. Four years is a long time in politics I know but at the moment the idea of running again is an attractive one.

Campfire’s Burning The Lunchbowl Network is incredibly grateful for all the support it receives form New Malden residents. Here are two great events for your diaries. On Friday 1st June from 6-9pm, there will be a Campfire burning in New Malden and you are all invited! The Lunchbowl Network is holding an evening of family fun with a campfire, singsong and games in the gardens of Christ Church to raise funds to feed and care for the 450 orphans they take care of in the Kibera Slum, Kenya and we would love you to come too. The evening will be a festival-style experience, bring picnic rugs or camping chairs, your own plate, mugs and cutlery and “camp” with us. A simple dinner, hot chocolate and marshmallows will be served and water and squash will be provided but otherwise please
bring whatever you would like to drink, inc alcohol for the adults (though this can only be enjoyed outside due to licensing laws). Tickets are £6 each and the cost of each ticket provides 18 orphans with a hot, nutritious meal. Wonderfully, Barclays Bank are match-funding the event and we are hoping for an improvement in the weather and a great evening together, please join us. Ballet in New Malden KBS is a dancing school in New Malden that was established by its principal, Louise Jefferson, 1995.
In September of that year the school, which opened by the Major of Kingston, started its first ballet classes at Coombe Hill Infants School with twenty five children. It soon expanded to hold classes at Christchurch Primary School and has now grown to over two hundred children ranging in age from 3 to 18. The pupils are able to learn the different dance genre of ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance and classes are offered at two new venues Malden Wanderers Cricket Club and New Malden Methodist Church. KBS wishes to create an atmosphere in which a child’s love of dance can thrive, where pupils can have fun and

enjoyment in a happy school that has excellent standards. Classes are designed to meet the needs and abilities of children to develop confidence and imagination, coordination and fitness and a love and understanding of dance that can be taken into adulthood. The children’s ballet training is nurtured through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examination syllabus. Since it was established, KBS has entered over 1000 pupils for exams and has a 100% success rate. Tap, modern dance and jazz classes follow the examination system of the Imperial Society of Dancing (ISTD) and exams are also taken in these genres. Many children from local schools participate in KBS classes and one of their highlights is our show. Last term the whole school took part in our production of Cinderella at the Arthur Cotterell Theatre. It was our sixth production and from woodland animals, fairies, jesters, step-sisters and Cinderella herself all had a fabulous time. The school has a dedicated team of teachers, all of whom are graduates of the Royal Academy of Dance. The principal, Louise Jefferson, graduated with prizes for outstanding student, Anatomy and choreography. She and several of the KBS teaches continue to teach at the Royal Academy. Pupils of KBS have been accepted on the Royal Ballet’s Associate programme and have gained places at the Elmhurst Ballet School, the Sylvia Young Stage School and the Brit School. Tom Holland, who appeared as Billy in the West End production of Billy Elliot was also trained by KBS. New pupils are welcome into the school at any age and can start at any time of the term. There are two new courses starting in June; one of three/four year olds and the other for teenagers who would like to start learning ballet for the first time or are returning to ballet after a long break. Other age groups are welcome to join existing classes and all new pupils are able to have a free trial lesson. Saturday morning classes for 3-6 years will be starting in September. School Summer Fairs Come and join in the madness at Corpus Christi Primary School’s ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Summer Fair’ on Saturday, 23rd June. Entrance is FREE for children and just £1 for adults. Sacred Heart Primary School is getting into the Olympic Spirit by hosting an Olympic themed Summer Fair Saturday 30th June, 12noon – 3pm Parents, pupils and staff will begin this super occasion with an Olympic parade, dressed in their country’s colours or even as their favourite sports person. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded for the most imaginative costumes. All money raised on the day will be used to purchase a new class set of netbooks to further enhance the use of ICT within the school. As always there will be lots to do for everyone. There will be funfair rides and an inflatable slide for younger children and for the older ones, a bungee run and hammer strike test of strength! There will be a fantastic Olympic podium photo opportunity and an Olympic craft stall too. Lots of local businesses will host stalls selling everything from jewellery, cards
and craft to cupcakes. It is a wonderful community event for all who attend. Our licensed bar will be open throughout and the delicious food will be catered by Ecklee Grill of Motspur Park and our own BBQ.You can even finish off with strawberries and cream! The event will close with our top prize raffle draw of £300.00. We hope to see you there. Lawns by Pippa Greenwood A lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is constantly being removed by mowing so it needs to be replaced. Phosphorus, potassium and iron also help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined by soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn. If you’re happy using chemicals on a weed problem, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers and a fertilizer. Applying these together ensures rapid grass growth to fill in the gaps left by the dead weeds. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait two weeks before applying the weed killer. Small infestations of weeds can be removed effectively by hand. A proprietary moss killer should take care of moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that they have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect of all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed (and over-seed if necessary) it will soon green up. Regular mowing is essential. A lawn left for too long will soon lose its good appearance and when finally cut, you may wonder if it will ever look right again. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green - try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. When the weather starts to warm up, the frequency of cut will be noticeably greater. However, if the weather is dry and the lawn isn’t well watered, growth rate will be correspondingly slow. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a show lawn that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch but remember that during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week! What about mowers? The one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job it can do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder

mower is best. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit uneven, then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should be raked up immediately. However, if you produce only tiny clippings then during dry weather you can leave them on the lawn to help conserve soil moisture. Going the distance David Moore prepares to cycle the from John O’Groats to Lands End As a keen cyclist fast approaching my 50th birthday I have set myself a challenge. I have done big cycle rides before, the longest being London to Paris in 2005 but this time I’m tackling the slightly longer distance from John O’Groats to Lands End, some 1020 odd miles, with only 125 miles on the first day! How hard can that be in flaming June and if all goes well I’ll be back in time for the Olympics. I will be accompanied by two fellow cyclists and one support vehicle and we will be covering an average of about 85 miles per day in all weathers! Whilst this ride is a personal goal it’s also an ideal opportunity to raise some funds for charity. All funds raised will go two charities in a 50/50 split. All expenses for the event are being met by the cyclists.
The two charities I’ve chosen are Momentum, a local charity which helps children with cancer, and a national charity, Cancer Research UK. Momentum was suggested by my daughter as she had sadly seen two girls at her school lose their battle with this terrible disease. Momentum is a registered charity established in 2004 which aims to help children, and their families, undergoing treatment for cancer in Surrey and South West London. Momentum was set up by parents who have first hand experience of these life-changing events, with the simple goal of trying to help others in similar circumstances. Cancer Research UK is a well known charity and has made some great advances in cancer treatments and care. There are not many people who have not been affected by this terrible disease in one way or another. We have lost my Dad and my wife Sarah’s Mum to it and we have family and friends who have also suffered directly and indirectly. A few years ago I did the Thames Bridges ride for Cancer Research and was struck by the strength people gained from supporting it. When we were queuing to sign in, there was a table set up to take a blank label and

Sky Dive for charity Jamie Grant (Worcester Park) and Jonathan Gibson (New Malden) are doing a 12,000ft Sky Dive on Saturday 30 June.
They are raising money for the Princess Alice Hospice for all their care, help, love and support they not only gave to their sister Sophie Gibson, but for their continued love and support they give others. Princess Alice Hospice is a charity providing all patient care and support free of charge. They provide outstanding end of life care to adult patients, and support to their families and friends across a large part
of Surrey, south west London and Middlesex. “This charity has become very close to my heart because unfortunately I lost my beautiful sister Sophie to Cancer after a three year battle on the 15 December of 2008. The staff at the Princess Alice Hospice are amazing, and deserve every spare penny I can raise for them to continue their service” says Jonathan. Each year Jamie and Jonathan take part in the Midnight Walk, walking 13.5 miles to raise funds, but this year they are taking part in their first ever skydive. Malden memories Patrick Denison has lived in New Malden since 1938. Here is the first of three trips down memory lane. The Village Voice has inspired me to relate some of the memories I have stored in my 83 year old brain, and put them down on paper. My family moved to New Malden in August 1938 from Shoreham By Sea in Sussex. One of the first friends I made (when aged 9) was called George Norris. I saw him pushing a very large baker’s cart in Avenue Road. He was five years older than me, and offered me a cake, thinking I was a bit on the thin side. There were also milk delivery carts, ice cream carts, and I remember the rag and bone man on his cart calling out “Any Old Iron”. Another memory was of beer barrels being rolled down to a cellar through a trap door. At Christmas, there was a man who used to sell roasted chestnuts, and as we warmed ourselves in front of the fire we used to make toast on a fork. Sometimes we used to burn our names on the logs, and my mother’s legs got very red, if she sat too near the fire. The only other heating we had in the house was paraffin stove in the hall, and a coal stove in the kitchen. We used to heat kettles on this stove for our weekly tin bath. My mother would be first in, then she would call my older brother, followed by me, and this was all in 4 inches of water. I also remember changing the gas mantels, and chopping wood for the fire. Our lead pipes were often frozen and we used to have torn up newspapers hanging by a string in the toilet. We kept chickens in the garden, and the fences were coated with creosote, while most of our walls had distemper on them. When I was aged 14, I worked for a while in the “International Stores” in Malden Road (High Street). These stood next to the passageway which now leads to Georges (Hairdresser).My job was to pack tea and sugar into brown paper bags. After two weeks I worked in the Nissan hut of Luco Art Metal Co. This factory was next to the Whato Transport Cafe at Shannon Corner where the Tesco petrol station now stands. We did drilling, tapping, and filing cones for the bottom of camera tripods, also repairing the belt drives. This was my war effort. We lived in our Anderson shelter in and off for about a year in the early 40s and sometimes saw “dog fights” in the air over London which were quite exciting. All this from our garden in Cambridge Road, where we had moved from 3 Malden Road in 1941. We had been

next to the Malden Tavern at the station behind “Jays “outfitters”. The rent there was £1 a week, but during the air raids, my father thought it was wise to move further away. We found a house in Cambridge Road also for £1 a week, and as Dad’s army allowance was £2 10 shillings (£2.50) that left £1 10shillings for 3 of us to live on. I remember Mum going to the pawnbrokers on the corner of Kingston Road and Cambridge Road with her wedding ring, or dad’s gold Benson pocket watch, when we needed to buy something extra. Mother shopped in Sainsbury’s (one of their very early shops). I remember seeing a man slicing bacon on a machine. This shop was opposite the” Plaza” (now McDonalds). Next to Sainsburys was “Cicerleys” a sweet shop, and now and then, my friend and I would buy a penny’s worth of sweets, climb into the tower of the burnt out Plaza and watch the people below. Safer Neighbourhoods by Sgt Nick Ellis As I write this it is pouring with rain but I hope that as June develops we have some warm and balmy days with plenty of opportunity for New Malden residents to enjoy our green spaces and to take advantage of London and local summer events. Travel in London is at an all time crime low but, when planning a trip, it is always useful to plan ahead to keep yourself safe. Funded by Transport for London, our city and outlying boroughs all have Safer Transport teams supervised by the Metropolitan Police Service Safer Transport Command. Liaising with local police, this coordinates reactive and proactive initiatives designed to reduce crime on buses, tackle unbooked minicabs and other cab related offences’ and assist with traffic congestion. Overall there are around 2,000 police officers and PCSOs dedicated to patrolling the surface transport network in London. You may be interested to know that all of London’s 8,500 buses are now fitted with CCTV cameras.

The Safer Transport team offers travellers the following advice (more details of which can be found on www.met. police.uk/transport or www.tfl.gov.uk/travelsafe) : • Keep handbags and bags fastened closed and wallets in inside pockets • Keep cash, mobile phones, MP3 players and other high value property such as laptops out of sight • Keep your luggage with you at all times • Report any unattended bags, luggage or suspicious activity immediately to a member of staff, a police officer, or use the green emergency button on the station Help point • If making a journey by minicab or taxi, always book your journey through a licensed operator. Text CAB to 60835 to get local licensed minicab or taxi telephone numbers sent to your phone. • Use well lit and safe routes to and from locations and not short cuts. Always plan your journey home before you set out. Look confident and walk purposefully towards your destination. • Report any incident to members of station staff or a police officer. Or you could sit close to the driver. • Drinking alcohol is not allowed on public transport for obvious reasons. I you see someone flouting this rule do report it to a member of staff or to a police officer as soon as possible. Our open spaces are always thronged during sunny days and especially during the school and college summer holidays. Your local Safer Neighbourhood teams have ramped up the patrols of these areas to ensure that users respect everyone’s right to a peaceful and conflict free day out.
