our December edition Welcome to our December edition - the
86th! Just cannot believe how quickly the year had flown by (albeit that I am writing this in November) and that it’s almost Christmas already. Time to dig the decorations from the numerous places I stored them last year - oh to be organised and have one place for everything! (Note for New Years’ Resolutions.) A big fan of fairy lights I don’t actually need Christmas as an excuse and have some on all year round lighting the stairwell. I am loving the new LED bulbs which don’t seem to have such a high failure rate as the traditional bulbs, replacing which is a very frustrating chore in my book! Annual festival at the Methodist Church TNewheMalden sparkly Christmas Tree Festival returns to Methodist Church on Saturday 15th
December this year. Around 24 local organisations will be showing off their artistic flair by decorating trees for their favourite charities. Last year saw entries from a host of local organisations including the Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Tudor Williams and various Church groups. The Festival usually raises a few hundred pounds for charities so make sure you pop into the Church to view the trees and vote for your favourite one. There is a general collection box if you are undecided, having seen the high standard of all the entries. You can view the trees at the following times: - from 10.00am till 12.00pm on Saturday 15th December - additional opening on Monday 17th December 6.00pm till 7.30pm with Christmas songs. And then

New Malden News Look out, Rudolph’s about Poppy Appeal - A Big Thanks A fter carrying Santa Claus and The Lord Mayor down the
High Street to switch on the Christmas lights at 5.30p.m. on Friday 30th November, Rudolph can be seen on Saturday 1st December and for each Saturday up to Christmas outside the Co op store in New Malden helping the Rotary Club to raise money for a large number of deserving local and national charities. From Tuesday 2nd December the sleigh will be visiting streets around New Malden from 6. 30 p.m. until 9.p.m. on four nights a week so keep a look out and please give generously as you have in the past. Tony Gooding of the Malden Rotary Club has asked The Village Voice to thank Tudor Williams for looking after Rudolph during the year and for the Co op for allowing the use of the area outside their store for the Saturday collections and gratefully acknowledges for the support given by this magazine for keeping our readers informed throughout the year. Iwrote n last month’s Village Voice I asking if there was anyone
who could help collect at New Malden Station. Within a few days we had a response from Coombe Boys School. The boys manned the Station from 7am to 9am. I understand that the boys were a credit to the School. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Boys, Staff and Parents for helping to raise the sum of £758.25p. Well done to you all. The Legion would also like to thank everyone who stood outside on cold windy corners and along the High Street. Thanks must also go to the Police for their assistance on Remembrance Sunday. Also to TFL for diverting traffic. Thanks to the Girl’s Brigate and Boy’s Brigade leaders for assisting with the march down the High Street to the Memorial and to the Public who attended the Service. New Malden History Malden Merry by Robin Gill
Iimagined f, like me, you always that Christmas in
Malden many years ago would have taken place under a blanket of snow, you might be surprised to learn that in Edwardian times (19011910) there were no “White Christmases” The nearest was in 1906 when it snowed heavily on Christmas night and Maldenians awoke to a covering of 4 inches on Boxing Day. Having said that, I make no excuses for using snow scenes as illustrations for this article. Two reasons, I know it’s approximately the right time of year, and they look appropriate.
Christmas present Christmas in the 1900s were unusual, as it was the first the village had celebrated without the Queen who had died early in 1901. Another habit that also died was the tradition of the local tradesmen giving Christmas boxes and New Years gifts to their customers and servants. Blaming “keen competition” the grocers, bakers, and dairymen led by Thomas Montague whose shop was on Eagle Terrace, (a stretch of Malden Road between Grafton and Cambridge Roads) decided to discontinue this practice which had been common in Victorian times. For some of the poorer servants this must have been very disappointing, as they had come to rely on this generosity to help them enjoy the celebrations. Many Christmas presents were homemade, but the local shops were beginning to specialise in “traditional” seasonal food and drink. For instance, at Arthur Hampton’s bakers at 11 Market Place you could buy minced pies at 1d or 2d each, or if you wanted to make your own, “superior” mincemeat was on sale at 9d per pound. He also sold sweets including many manufactured by Pascalls. James Pascall, the co-founder of the company had lived for many years in a large house called Ambleside (now Holmwood Corner Surgery) next to the congregational church in New Malden. He was one of the original founders of the church. Mincemeat @ 7½d a jar, and Christmas puddings @ 1s 2d each, were also available from Wood and Hill on the corner of Malden Road and Grafton Road, together with tins of biscuits, Christmas cakes, and dried and bottled fruit. Coombes (the Hygienic Bakery) had their first Christmas in Malden in 1906 with their range of iced cakes and Christmas puddings. For the man about town Dodds the outfitters at 8 The Pavement (between Cambridge and Sussex Roads) could provide ties, gloves, silk scarves, and various woollen goods. Cleasby Chorley at 9 Malden Road the chemist was prepared to offer a free sachet to any purchaser of a bottle of perfume costing one shilling upwards over the Christmas period. These together with soaps and smelling salts must have made his premises one of the more pleasant to visit. His window was decorated

with snowdrops and hyacinths which added to the ambience. He also started stocking his own range of bouquet perfume called Surrey. Fresh meat was available through Joseph Ransom the butcher on Malden Road (between Grafton and Cambridge Roads) having access to shorthorn bullocks, which had previously belonged to Charles Blake (Motspur Park) who died in 1897. Ransom could also provide your geese, and turkey. Festive drinks could be obtained from Mr Carter, who had recently taken over the Lovibond wine and spirit merchants in the Market Place. 1903 saw the first arrival of a multinational chain with the opening of the International Tea Co’s Stores Ltd in the Market Place. These stores now trade as Somerfields. Edwin Boone’s store in Cambridge Road showed that fancy Christmas goods could be bought off the main road, stocking boxes of bon bons, cakes, wines and spirits. Even Mrs Paine at her premises in Coombe Road was stocking articles suitable for Christmas including a small piano. It should be mentioned that as well as being a local undertaker, Mrs Paine and her son Fred also operated a house furnishing establishment, where you could buy anything from chandeliers to Sheraton cabinets. Those of you wanting something shiny could pay a call on William Sudbury’s ironmongers in the Market Place where small silver plated ornaments could be purchased.
There was no shortage of shops where you could buy cards (Thomas Thomas, Fred Hawkins [Post Office], and William Hides), and for the children’s toys Charlotte Peapell’s shop in the Market Place carried a large stock. Mr Thomas’s shop in Coombe Parade was unusual as it was the only shop in Malden to trade from both a ground and first floor. At Christmas the first floor was fitted out as a bazaar with toys, fancy and leather goods. Flowers and photos Malden had its own nursery called Heatherset on the corner of Lime Grove and Coombe Road. This was operated by Arthur Luff and his family and had been

established in 1897. Here you could buy your fruits, Christmas flowers, and foliage for decoration. The drapers were not to be left out with Nicholas Pearce (forerunner of Tudor Williams), William Norburn, and Henry Hide. Malden was not behind with recent inventions with Mr Easter’s shop in Malden Road selling phonographs and records, and Mr Hide in the Market Place stocking “photographic apparatus” together with gramophones etc. The Malden and Coombe Brass Band would travel the district with their versions of traditional hymns and carols, hoping that the wealthier inhabitants would contribute to worthy causes. Fire, post, and mail Decorating of public buildings included the railway station in evergreens, flags, paper chains and Chinese lanterns, which was carried out by the station staff. There was always a Christmas Box list on display with the names of the railway employees so donations could be received. The men of the Post Office who worked extremely hard especially leading up to Christmas, encouraged their customers to only give to official representatives, or as their advertisement stated: “The Postmen of New Malden tender their thanks for
past seasons, and hope the public will again show their generosity and subscribe to authorised collectors only, who will wait upon them in due course”. The fire station stood in the Market Place before moving to its purpose built site next to the council offices (now Waitrose). At Christmas it was decorated with sprigs of holly which reached to the ceiling of the building. Above this was a beehive the emblem of the fire brigade and the district. Flags were hung all over the building and painted on the ground in front was “A Merry Christmas”. On the outside the building was illuminated by fairy lights and Chinese lanterns. Sports and social In the early 1900s it was traditional on Boxing Day to attend the annual football match held at Malden Football Ground in Coombe Road. Proceeds from the match called “Top Hats v Bonnets” would go to local charities, tickets were 1 shilling (adults) and 6d (children) and kick off was 2.30pm. There was a bran tub containing toys for every child under eight. Most years saw over 200 attend raising at least £10 for institutions like Kingston Hospital. All the participants were male and the normal rules of football were strictly ignored, with the ball being kicked, carried, or even attached to the players by rope. Both teams wore fancy dress and the “referee” was attired as Father Christmas.

All the “girls” were in capes, skirts and hats some of which had veils causing a lot of confusion. Some of the men’s outfits would not be allowed in today’s PC world. The result wasn’t important. In the later part of the decade the football match was replaced by the Coombe and Malden Marathon organised by Surrey AC (previously Malden Harriers). Starting and finishing in Coombe Road, the race past through New Malden four times during the 22 miles course. The runners were accompanied around the circuit by representatives of the Oxo Company in two cars, who provided sustenance where needed. Eighty competitors took part of which fifty managed to finish the race which encompassed Old Malden, Ewell, Cheam, Worcester Park and Raynes Park. The race was won by H Green of Sutton Harriers in just under 2 hours 8 minutes. If, you wanted to see a show, probably a pantomime at this time of year, tickets for performances at the Royal County Theatre in Kingston were available at Slaughter Howson & Co in Kingston Road (between Montem and Penrith Roads) where you were able to
book tickets by telephone for seats in all the local and London theatres, with no booking fee. Services On Christmas Eve, a Children’s Toy Service held at Christ Church, where young children of the parish were encouraged to bring along a toy each which would be given to a less fortunate child. The church was decorated throughout with vases of white chrysanthemums, variegated holly and evergreens on the pillars, windows and font. The children were generous with their donations with over 200 toys filling around five large cases for those youngsters in Kingston Infirmary, and other hospitals. Services on Christmas Day were held at 7, 8, and 12 o’clock. Other denominations usually held a joint service on December 25th, and a watch night service on New Year’s Eve. New Malden News TGroup he newly formed New Malden & Coombe Heritage , who are applying for lottery funding, are starting
to arrange a project on local past memories. Robin Gill, our local historian, is an important member of this group. Thinking back over this Olympic year it is worth recalling that New Malden had a Gold Medallist in 1964. In that year at the Tokyo Olympics Ann Packer, an assistant PT teacher at Coombe Girls School , won a Gold medal in the 800 metres and a Silver in the 400 metres. She was the first ever female British Gold Medallist on the track ! The Headmistress gave the news at the morning assembly and a telegram was sent off from the staff and the girls to Ann. Later some of them went to ITV studios to see a film of the race. Ann's fiancee Robbie Brightwell, a master at Tiffin Boys, was captain of the athletics team and won a Silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. Ann & Robbie subsequently married a few months' later, retired from athletics as they were amateurs, started a family and currently live in Congleton, Cheshire. I would like to hear from any past pupils at the school with any memories of Ann at that time. Ann is fully behind this project and may at a future date provide an article for Village Voice. Twillhose of you who have lived in New Malden for a while probably be familiar with the annual Scout Christmas
Postal Service with its red and black post boxes at various locations around New Malden. The scheme depends on a team of volunteers to empty the boxes, sort the mail and arrange delivery by members of the Scout Group from Beavers in the youngest section, through Cubs and Scouts and even relying on parental help. It is a valuable exercise in community service for the youth members of our Scout Group, it is also a way to raise much needed funds for our activities. This year we’ll have 5 post boxes in and around New Malden from 24th November to 14th December, all you need to do is bring your post to one of the five collection boxes with your donation (minimum 20p per letter) and leave the rest to us. A crack team of volunteers will then sort and deliver your Christmas cards to any KT3 addresses in time for Christmas. All this for only 20p per item, so please support us and save money at the same time!!! A
t last some good news for the Royal Mail. Yes over the years we have all moaned about our declining deliveries and the price of stamps. However, I would put much of this down to an historical legacy of abuse - financial and managerial abuse by our politicians who consistently treated the Post Office as a cash cow in the good days and an object of ridicule in the bad days. The Royal Mail missed out on the developments and initiatives of the likes of the Dutch mail service, because the latter was given the capital and the dynamic business ability to go out and develop both its market and itself. Meanwhile Royal Mail has been constricted by political dogma and old union

intransigence in the face of industrial and market changes. Is this another classic British example of being bypassed by technology and innovation, blended with poor management and archaic trade unions? Perhaps not for much longer; with management having the strength of character to take hard decisions and the unions appearing to see the logic of such shifts, are we seeing a change of heart? Until quite recently the deliverer of snail-mail had been all but written off, and strangely it has been the rise of the previously touted “nemesis” of the Royal Mail that has really proved its saving. The increase of internet purchases has led directly to the rise of parcel deliveries (or sometimes failed deliveries, judging by the queues at the parcel office on Saturday mornings). If it does ever float, which is quite possible, then one wonders whether Amazon might make a bid for its prime deliverer. Perhaps they could sort out the milk deliveries at the same time? And then, when they get round to it they might even consider paying some tax. Seemingly things have changed in terms of the politicians, managers and unions and with the possibility of a flotation being mooted, maybe eventually for the better. Again another example where the politicians should just get out of the way and let a business, albeit a regulated business, get on with its own development. celebrates 60th anniversary W ith 60 years of helping people with learning disabilities under its belt, Kingston Mencap has
much to be proud of as it celebrates its Diamond Anniversary this year. Affiliated to national charity Royal Mencap, Kingston Mencap is run by a small band of volunteers. It works hard to support people with learning disabilities to achieve the things they want out of life, and to ensure they are valued, listened to and, most importantly, included. With around 200 members, the charity is fun, supportive and busy – and always offers a warm welcome to new people. Not only are there 3 leisure clubs and a Saturday drop-in, there’s also a carers’ group, too. For teenagers aged 12-18, Xpressions is held at Searchlight, Kingston Road, on a Tuesday evening, 7-9pm (contact Dave Cafferty 07749 275 425), while those aged 19-35 can join Future Friends which is a great way to socialise and is held at Canbury Gardens Pavillion, Kingston, on alternate Thursdays (contact Kirsty Fraser 07725 562 434). The adults have their own social club, Seekers, which is held at Newent House, Surbiton on a Monday evening (contact Zerrin Izli, 07523 969 855). The Saturday drop-in at Searchlight is a fantastic club for members to pop in for a cuppa and a chat, as many clubs tend only to be on weekdays. There are always lots of social activities like family fun days, bowling nights, boat trips and theatre outings – and this year the fabulous Diamond Jubilee Ball in December for members and their guests. Volunteering
Can you be a buddy? If the Olympics and Paralympics have given you
the volunteering bug, or you simply have a few free hours available each week, then local charity Kingston Association for the Blind (K.A.B.) would love to hear from you. K.A.B. offers help and advice to blind and visually impaired residents in the Borough. They are looking for volunteers who can act as drivers and ‘buddies’, helping their members attend functions or simply giving them a hand on an individual basis with daily tasks like dealing with the post, filling in forms and local shopping. In addition to the Eye Buddy Scheme K.A.B. run a number of recreational activities which include Social Clubs across the Borough, Lawn Bowls and Tandem Cycling. The Association supports a weekly Talking Newspaper and they also have a lending Audio Library of over 1500 books of various genres. K.A.B. has had a really successful 2012 with stalls at both New Malden Craft Fair and Surbiton Farmers

The Better Life

espite living in a rural area for a while now, the local wildlife continues to fascinate me. Maybe it’s because of my urban upbringing, where I only encountered sparrows, pigeons and the occasional house mouse. I’ve been known to stop the car for butterflies. I was once mesmerised by the sight of a Hummingbird Hawk-moth, when I was putting the bin out (it’s all go in our village). That moth seemed too perfect to be real somehow. I feel the same about the bats that patrol along the back lane - pipistrelles I think, judging by the size of them. I was fortunate enough to see one up close, thanks to our cat. She has a different attitude to wildlife, treating our window as Freeview with the creatures outside a mixture of entertainment, expendable toys and snacky treats (or parts thereof). One evening I tore myself away from the computer, when Anne was out at a dance class. I don’t do dance, unless a good impression of a wounded elephant counts. The cat was nowhere to be seen, but she’d left me a gift on the carpet. “Typical,” I said to the room. “Another mouse in need of the last rites.” On closer inspection this was no rodent, unless they came in their own shrouds. It was a bat and it was still breathing. I know very little about bats, other than:
a) They don’t get in your hair. b) They’re a protected species and you need a licence to handle them. I telephoned around and spoke with a local bat lady, who I’d met once before, on a stand at a green fair. There, she’d opened her overcoat - like a dodgy watch seller - to reveal a selection of bats hanging in the lining. She now informed me that she’d retired and her nearest replacement was 20 miles away, so could I take the bat to him. Not unless he was keen on trains. Under the circumstances, she suggested guiding me through some basic bat care. First I wrapped the little fella in some tissue paper. Then I tried offering him some water on a small paintbrush without success. “Oh, and do you have any cat food?” she inquired. I told her that I rather thought that was part of the problem, but attempted a feed - again without success. “The other thing you might want to try,” she said, “is feeling along the wings - very carefully, mind - for any broken bones.” I told her about my habit of sneezing unexpectedly and we agreed to skip the procedure.

It was like one of those old disaster films, where a novice has to pilot the plane while being talked down over the radio. Only in this case, it was the finer points of bat husbandry via a hands-free cordless. Finally, as instructed, I took the bat outside and very carefully released it from the tissue cocoon. The combination of a warm evening, moonlight and a little TLC soon revived it from its torpor. The bat stretched its wings, took a good look around and then flitted into the night. It was a little piece of magic. The cat remains unrepentant.

Adult Beginner’s Running Courses Starting 9th January
Landikeinallthegood stories, there has to be a beginning case of this story, it all started out in the
offices of Richmond Council. For some time Richmond Council had been promoting ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Courses’, the idea being to get people with static athletic mobility to be able to run without stopping for three miles. The courses took place over an eight week period and were led by the qualified coaches at Ranelagh Harriers Running Club. The courses had been going for several years and become oversubscribed, and Sheen Shufflers were invited to also host one of the courses in 2006. Sheen Shufflers continued to host these courses until 2011. However, there is a downside to this particular success story in that Richmond Council for 2012 dropped the courses from their itinery and left the two running clubs to it. So, in January 2012, Sheen Shufflers started their own ‘Adult Beginner’s Running Course’ which attracted an initial four ladies; a journalist, a community matron and two mums with children in school. All four runners passed the course with flying colours, and one of the ladies has now competed in two races, an off-road 7k race in Bushy Park and a six mile cross country slog in a league fixture for Sheen Shufflers! So, is there a sporting life after the course has finished? Well, you can carry on running, or in a couple of cases, take up another sport you’ve always fancied doing but felt too embarrassed to try. It is a lot easier to participate in a new sport if you are fit. In the case of running, Sheen Shufflers started a Friday morning section three years ago which meet every Friday at 9:50am at Pembroke Lodge car park and run for anywhere between three and four miles, the routes being throughout Richmond Park and sometimes down to the Thames towpath at Ham. Believe it or not, we even have runs where we break into the run to feed the ducks, either in Isabella Plantation or down by the river. And yes, not everybody is the same standard, but most of the runners just enjoy the freedom the running brings them, and most certainly do their share of chatting on the way round, turning it into a ‘sociathletic’ run! There are also Monday and Wednesday evening sessions in Richmond Park (7:30pm), even during the winter months, if you can’t make a morning run. With a fabulous facility like Richmond Park on our doorsteps, why waste the opportunity to make more of it!

Buying a digital camera by Imber Court Photo Training A re you considering purchasing a digital camera for Christmas? At first glance it can often appear
that you are entering a world of confusion! Here is a bit of advice before you jump in at the deep end. A few considerations are necessary, number one being how much you want to spend, followed by what are you going to use the camera for. If you are looking for a camera that will easily fit in your pocket to use for taking family and holiday snaps then there are hundreds on the market at the moment. Always go for one of the well known manufacturers, Canon, Nikon, Olympus or Panasonic whose ranges start at about £90.00 up to about £250.00 depending on what features they have. We would suggest that the less features the easier the camera is to operate. If you’re looking at buying something that will enable you to start taking your photography

seriously then there is only one option, a DSLR. These range in price from around £300 up to £5000! Don’t panic, Nikon and Canon both manufacture excellent entry level DSLR models starting at around £300. The Canon 1100D and Nikon D3200 can be purchased with a standard 18 – 55mm lens in this price range. They are both excellent models capable of producing fantastic results. Most photographers need to be able to freeze movement, decide whether the background of the image is sharp or blurred and to have the ability to focus manually when the autofocus gets confused. These models enable you to do this along with a few other settings that will help you achieve stunning results that you will be proud to print and display. Winter Warmers by Pippa Greenwood Eyourvengarden if you’re sure you’re not going to venture into much this winter, make sure you have every possible encouragement by creating a winter planter or two. They will not only look gorgeous from the warm comfort of your house, but will also help to coax you outside from time to time. Choose a larger container as it’s more likely to protect the roots on the plants due to the greater volume of compost. I’d avoid any container less than 30cm (12in) diameter if possible. Any container will insulate the roots a little, but one made from thick wood (such as a wooden trough or window box, or a half-barrel) will be very effective. Good quality, fairy chunky plastic also works quite well. Try to avoid metal as this tends to conduct cold. Warm undergarments are all the rage for winter planters. A lining of bubble-wrap polythene or even a few layers of old fabric or carpet, sandwiched between the sides of the container and the compost will help to keep both compost and roots warm. If you live in a particularly cold area, or simply want to decrease the risk of winter damage further, try to position winter planters out of the windiest areas. If possible place them fairly close to a house wall on the south or west side as this will help to provide a little extra warmth. You’ll be amazed at the range of plants available at your local garden centre for adding winter colour and interest to pots and planters. Some of my favourites are the universal or other winter flowering pansies or even hardier smaller flowered violas. For some seriously sturdy winter colour, try the winter flowering heathers as these make a good base for the display and you can then add trailing plants such as variegated ivies to help provide extra colour, texture and interesting leaf shapes. All these plants will last for years, not just the winter months. At this time of year, garden centres may offer very tiny versions of shrubs such as skimmias, Pieris or hollies and many of the dwarf conifers. They will provide good colour and interest in a container for a year or two and can then be planted in your garden to reach their full size. In warmer areas, you can add bright patches of colour to your display using the ‘winter cherry’ or solanum which has bright yellow and orange fruits. You could also use a few winter flowering cyclamen but these definitely need a very sheltered spot such as a window box on a protected wall. Don’t forget to add in a few early spring flowering bulbs such as miniature narcissus, crocus and miniature

iris. Hide them beneath the roots of your winter bedding plants; you’ll forget they are there until they burst out in spring. M other used to take me to Kingston for tea in “Lyons” teashop in Thames Street; also we went to
“Zetas” restaurant. I remember seeing someone diving into a water tank in Bentalls. This would have been between the escalators. I also went to the Coronation Baths for a swim and as a treat from our tin bath, I would pay 6d (2.5 pence) for a bath including soap and a towel, in the summer we would swim in Surbiton Lagoon. I went to Burlington Road School, and then to Beverley School, which was a long walk from the station. Mr Heal was the headmaster and Mr Carlo C Loretto the music teacher. He was a good teacher but mainly by fear, sing a wrong note, and he would leap from the platform, and lash out with a cane. We sang some wonderful songs, mainly Russian. One I think was called Steppe land and sung in three parts. Education was limited to between air raids. After a short time in the Kingston Sea Cadets learning to row a boat and climb a rope etc, I joined the “Air Training Corp” and enjoyed marching down the High
Street blowing and playing the bugle or the drums. Once, when we went for two weeks summer camp in Kent, I flew in a Lancaster Bomber over bombed out Cologne, I still have the photo from my “Box Brownie” camera. I remember seeing in the foyer of New Malden library, a rear gun turret on display, I climbed in and enjoyed moving the guns and turret with the two handles. Opposite the library were two Victorian houses, which were empty, so we used to play in them. Afterwards the site became “Paddys Garage” (on the corner of Cleveland Road). Other places that spring to mind, are “Easters” a cycle shop on the High Street near Dukes Avenue, and off Dukes Avenue was Station Approach where my uncle worked in a garage, as part of a taxi service. In Grafton Road was “Edwards” paper shop (now a car park), and in the road that goes behind the shops, leading to the wooden garage of our house No 3 Malden Road was, on the left hand side, “The Art Marble Co”. I remember the large trees in the High Street; one outside the Methodist Church, another opposite Woolworths outside “Dons” the barber shop, which was down a passage way next to a tobacco shop (Waslin or Lewis?). I now go to Georges opposite where Rideways cycle shop stood. The other side of Georges shop was

the International Stores where I worked for a short time when I was fourteen. The manager was called Mr Gyton who was a friend of my father who taught him to drive. I also remember that the counters in Woolworths were quite low, and sold things for 3d and 6d, and on the corner of Blagdon Road were two houses. Past Elm Road by the bridge over Kingston Road, was “Rose Garage” where they had 4 hand operated petrol pumps and a hand operated oil pump. I used to fill up my first motor cycle a 350cc BSA Empire Star. I think the garage was hit by a thunderbolt. My last motorcycle was a 650cc Triumph Twin which I sold to Comerfords in Portsmouth Road at Thames Ditton because my wife Jean liked the idea of keeping dry in a car. When we were married in March 1958, it was a double wedding as Jean’s broth (fellow motorcyclist) married Barbara. All four of us are still married 54 years later. We had no children; we kept the buns out of the oven as we were both saving for a house. Brian’s was in Walton On Thames and ours in Cambridge Road. We hired two Morris 1000 cars for our honeymoon and went to Butlins at Saltdean Brighton.

D ear Local Resident, The Met is cracking down on burglary. We understand that
it can be financially costly and emotionally devastating for victims and their families. However, by taking just a few simple measures you can dramatically reduce the chances of it happening to you. Most burglaries tend to be opportunistic rather than planned. So if your home does not look secure, seems unlived in, or provides unobserved access, it could be at risk. Understanding what burglars look for when choosing their target will help you identify weak spots in your home's security. Our 10 Top Tips: 1. Mark or etch your property with your postcode, house or flat number or the first three letters of your house name. 2. Register items with a serial number at: www.immobilise. com 3. Do not leave your car keys or ID documents near doors, letterbox or windows. 4. Always check who’s at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious. 5. Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes. 6. Keep your valuables out of sight. 7. Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home. 8. Install a visible burglar alarm. 9. Always keep sheds and outbuildings locked. 10. Cancel milk or other deliveries if you will be away for days or weeks at a time. How does a burglar's mind work? Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured: • Side gates open • Accessible windows open • Ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows • Garden tools available to force entry • Untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance Each of these makes access to the building far simpler and is an indication to the prospective burglar that it's worth a second look. Residents of multi occupancy dwellings or flats should be mindful not to grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if they do not know them, and to be cautious of people seeking to 'tailgate' them into buildings. The question is, are the occupants in?

Dad’s Diary by Ian Duncan “He who sings frightens away his ills” Cervantes “Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!” Charles Dickens We Wish You A Merry Halloween While I love many Christmas traditions, the one where supermarkets try to foist it on us a week earlier each year is not one of them. A Christmas that starts in December. How ridiculously early do the supermarkets want us to start? They were all guilty of having mince pies etc on the shelves before the Halloween goodies. Could we not be like Finland where the Christmas Tree goes up on Christmas Eve? Chestnuts roasting on an open fire One of the joys of Christmas is building your own traditions: the little and the large, the routines and rhythms that you create with your family. These are a few of my favourite: The Christmas trip to the theatre where the principal male character is played by a young lady with shapely legs; the heroine is also played by a young lady and there is also a bawdy matriarchal figure played not by Judy Dench or Maggie Smith but by a man? It’s not Shakespeare but panto. And I’m not going to give you any excuses about it being a good introduction to theatre for children. (Oh yes you will do I hear you cry?) Yes they can come too but when else do you get the chance to wonder at the fall from grace of a seventies TV icon (Priscella Presley, Wimbledon or David Hasslehof, Manchester anyone?) Yuletide carols being sung by a choir Singing carols. Ideally this should be done outside in the cold accompanied by a Euphonium but groups of carol singers don’t seem to take kindly to tone deaf strangers joining them. (Note: duos of hoodied youths who only know half a verse of “We wish you a Merry Christmas” don’t count) Listening to Christmas Songs while making the Christmas cake / minces /mulled. While it’s been downhill ever since Bing Crosby crooned “White Christmas” but in these days of MP3 you can exclude the the most cutsey tunes from that Christmas number 1’s CD (St. Winifred’s School Choir and “There’s No-one Quite Like Grandma) or anything by Cliff from your playlists.

Santa’s on his way? There are some traditions that we share in the UK, the crib, the tree, Father Christmas, turkey that form an integral part of our Christmas and yet would seem strange elsewhere. Here are some traditions from around the world that may seem strange to us: In Italy, La Befana is a kindly old woman that hands out presents at on Epiphany Eve (January 5th) rather like Santa Claus. Christmas cuisine in Greenland can’t quite compete with sprouts. Mattock – raw whale skin with a little blubber – is one festive delicacy, as is Kodiak, which is made by wrapping an auk (a small arctic bird) in seal skin, burying it for several months and eating its decomposed flesh. Czech women perform a simple ritual during Christmas to determine how successful their love life will be during the following year. Unmarried women stand with their backs to the front door and hurl a shoe over their shoulder. If the shoe lands with the toe pointing towards the door, they will be wed within the year. Ukrainian Christmas trees are traditionally adorned with an artificial

In Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, it is customary to travel to early-morning church services on roller skates – roads are even cleared to provide Christmas worshippers with a safe passage. In Austrian tradition, Krampus accompanies Saint Nicholas during the Christmas season, warning and punishing bad children, in contrast to St. Nicholas, who gives gifts to good children. During the festive period, Men dressed as Krampus roam the streets, frightening the little ones. In Catalonia the tradition of caga tió involves creating a character out of a small log, often with a grinning face and hat, which sits on the dining room table during the fortnight leading up to Christmas. It has to be fed every day with fruit, nuts and sweets. On Christmas Eve the entire family beats the log with sticks, while singing traditional songs, forcing the log to give up its treats.
