T

his is the January edition of the newspaper and as a teenager you are probably expecting some light-hearted article of the endless possibilities that the New Year can bring, followed by clichéd sayings that are supposed to make life more enjoyable. Well, sorry to disappoint, but you are going to get quite the opposite. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the “new year = new beginnings” attitude, however, I think, that as a society, we shouldn’t need a significant event such as New Year’s to come around to make us want to make our lives more meaningful. Being in high school, this is especially true because although we may wake up New Year’s Day and say to ourselves that we are going to make the most out of the rest of the year, which surprisingly isn’t that far away, that should be our mindset from day one.

As young adults, it is imperative for us to have this in the back of our minds everyday living through high school. Even though clichéd sayings are overused, they do have some truths to them. High school really does go by extremely fast and it can be the best times in our lives, which is why we should embrace it and always want to make the most out of our time. That is why I feel like it is important for us to realize that we don’t need some commercialized holiday to tell us to think positively about the future and make exciting plans that we all want to achieve some day, because we should already be doing that.

Although the New Year comes around and it acts as a wakeup call for all of us dreamers to actually make some reality about everything we fantasize over, we should genuinely aspire for the things we thought we would never do. Life is too short to say “I’ll do this next time” or to say “something got in the way” because there is always going to be time to make excuses for the things we want to do but there won’t always be time to do them New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be about making big plans or even changing your lifestyle in some dramatic way because all of these things require a whole new attitude on life. New Year’s resolutions should be about trying to embrace this outlook on life which is a goal society needs

to achieve in itself because people get caught up in the daily, rigid routine they always find themselves in, because it is hard to break from that pattern to say they are going to do something they have always wanted to accomplish. Even as a teenager I always find that there is some reason to not do something and those reasons will always be there. But there also comes a time when we all have to realize if the things we consider “more important” are actually more important than having a optimistic and hopeful outlook on life.

Ideally, no one is going to wake up one morning and say they want to go skydiving or lose 15 pounds by the time summer comes because it’s just not possible. However, this is exactly what the holiday of New Year’s does to us today. All of those dreams and expectations cannot be fulfilled overnight. Although life is great with a little spontaneity here and there, why do we have to wait for those moments to come around to realize we could have been doing these things all along?

Granted the goals we set for ourselves and the dreams we all want to accomplish someday way off in the future are exactly that, they are way off in the future. But if we don’t realize that those things, regardless of how far off or insurmountable they may appear to be, they can still be accomplished because all it takes is for anyone to want to make the most out of life and allows him/ herself to set out to reach that goal.

New Year’s is about realizing how much more fun and excitement we can have in our lives if we allow ourselves to do so and also allow ourselves to make time for everything life has to offer.

We would like to dedicate this page to Julia Elizabeth Vanella, a member of our Malden High School community who passed away shortly before the publication of this issue. She was a powerful force of positivity in and out of the school, a devoted dancer, and a friend to countless individuals at MHS, Forestdale School, Malden, and beyond. She was an enthusiastic contributor to her class, a hardworking student, and an accomplished ballet dancer. Countless flowers were left at a memorial site outside of the school, offerings from friends and family to Julia and her timeless smile.

Make Your Dreams A Reality Karina Matos Reporter

S

uccess isn’t something easily obtained. While people have achieved success, and will continue to, the big question those without success seem to ask is how. How can someone go from a nobody to being completely famous? How can someone reach their goal weight? How can someone achieve their dreams?

On the outside it looks easy. As humans it is practically in our nature to want things quickly and easily.

The fastest way to get something can often trump the best way to get something. But really, the first step is admitting that there is no “quick way” to success. No one has ever truly succeeded in accomplishing their goal without hard work and effort. Admittedly, the amount of work and effort depends on what the particular goal is and how far along you’ve already come. However, if loopholes and short cuts are the only way someone is willing to go, then there’s really little hope of success.

After admitting that success isn’t something easy to come by, the next thing to do is identify the problem. Michael Jordan once said, “If you’re trying to achieve, there will

be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Everyone has to face a problem at some point in their life. But problems are made to be solved. What kind of success story would someone be able to tell afterward if there was no conflict? Every happy ending comes after some kind of issue that the main character must overcome before getting there. Thinking about what issues need to be faced, and working out how to work around them is an important skill in life.

For example, Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team. Did that stop him? Obviously not. He practiced, and worked hard.

The next time there was tryouts, he made the team. What makes this such an inspirational little story was that a guy like Michael Jordan, one of the most well known basketball players, faced conflict to achieve his goals. But he identified the problem, and took action in solving it.

Everyones solutions to their issues will be different, but the one thing they all share is that once the issue has been resolved, moving forward

n America, slavery officially ended in 1865, but equality for people of color has been a long trip that has taken 148 years - and counting.

Particularly in the decades following the civil war, black citizens had access to few of the same privileges that white people exercised. This included voting. State governments created “literacy tests” which forced voters to take an exam before voting. This discriminated against black voters, since it was so difficult for them to get an education. “Jim

Crow” laws like these prevented these people of lower economic class, recently freed from enslavement, from making a new life.

Racism is far from over. But there are still “Jim Crow” laws embedded in our education system, and though they affect many People of Color (POCs), it targets those with fewer financial privileges.

Perhaps the most visible evidence is the concept of paying for higher education. This can mean anything from attending private schools to signing up for summer courses - institutions that don’t just

Success comes to the focused and determined person. The one who is willing to do nearly anything to make what they want happen.

People who are focused on only one thing they want to achieve with one set goal in mind may seem narrow minded, but really, they are just determined to see their dreams through. However, being determined about a specific goal is fine, but that shouldn’t prevent someone from being flexible about how they get there. If someone is determined to have their goals accomplished, but only in a specific way, that makes it a whole lot harder for anything to actually happen. Not everything in life goes according to plan and its much easier to be prepared for anything then to be too stubborn to bother.

Whether someones goal is to become a famous singer, or to get into the college of their choice, they should never doubt themselves. The more someone doubts themself the more they believe that whatever they want to accomplish is “stupid” or “impossible.” Logically, if someones goal really was to be a famous singer, its not impossible considering people have done it before. So

We are lucky to have multiple programs at MHS that help less-privileged students attain sufficient opportunities - our free Bunker Hill Community College courses and provided PSAT tests are a huge opportunity for some. But not every school has these opportunities, and if our society was equal, we wouldn’t need any of these.

Private schools are a similar story. Many of them are great schools, but this is the problem - it is a giant literacy test. To get a focused, private education - which often produces great results - you first need a certain level of wealth to get there from the start. I understand this may not have been the intention, but it is one aspect of our culture that in many ways promotes racism, classism, and downright inequality.

The institution is reinforced with white lies, trying to justify its fairness by putting its students of

However, with someone doing all they can, putting in a lot of hard work, the chances will greatly improve. Some factors in reaching our goals are out of our hands, but, if we do all we can, at least there is still the satisfaction of knowing all that could be done was done. Also, in many cases, the first try isn’t the end all, be all. College is available at all ages, and though the first time may not have been the charm, who’s to say the second one will not?

Success is greatly sought after.

That’s why its better not to sweat it. If you have a goal in mind, try to enjoy the journey. Do something for the joy of doing it, not necessarily the success that could come with it. Even if the going gets tough, and it seems like theres no where left to go, don’t give up. It is never the end, and there’s nearly always something more that can be done.

Colin Powell once stated, “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” So do not wait any longer to make your dreams a reality.

People in poverty or financial trouble are far more likely to, for example, afford an effective lawyer - which is necessary to compete with any well-funded prosecution. This and flat-out discriminatory arrests keep many families from progressing.

This government system, by design, discriminates, just like voting systems in the reconstruction era.

The unfortunate part of this is that it cannot be fixed. Not yet, at least. There are two problems we face: the issue of racial and economic equality, and our elitist education and government system.

These policies that deliberately keep people in a black hole of poverty need to end.

s we go through the years, problems have been solved and new problems have been created, but one of the things that always seems to come up again and again is the issue of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights, also known as LGBT rights. This is an issue all over the world, and in some parts of the world this group is not accepted at all. What have we done as a country to tackle this issue, to be more accepting of others?

Over the years, 17 states have legalized gay marriage; California. Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. These however, will not be the last of the states that legalize it.

Here, many changes are in the process of being made, but as for other countries, it seems that no changes are set to be made at all. In countries like Ethiopia and Pakistan, as well as many other countries, there are anti-homosexuality laws.

There is absolutely no reason for the LGBT community to be unaccepted and intolerated.

Just because their sexual orientation is different from others does not make them a whole new species. In reality, people treat them differently and see them differently people, but they are all human beings who should be treated the same way as everyone else. Why is it that people do not accept that?

In Cameroon, people are sentenced to up to five years in jail for homosexual activity. In November 2011, two men were arrested outside of a nightclub because of ‘unusual behavior.’

The way they spoke and talked about wearing women’s clothing had apparently been the key evidence that proved their homosexuality.

There could have been a good chance that they

were not homosexual, as just because there are some people who assumed they were, does not prove anything.

Even if they are homosexual, why do they have to be bothered? They are not disturbing the peace, they do not get in the way of people.

If they don’t bother people, why should people bother them? If they were just left alone, this would never be a problem.

It is also interfering with someone’s personal life. Stars like British diver Tom Daley or YouTube sensation Tre Melvin coming out and saying that they are bisexual seem annoyed to have to address the issue. Tom Daley mentioned in his video in 2013 about coming out that “in an ideal world, [he] wouldn’t be doing this [making a video making this announcement].” Yes, in an ideal world it would not matter to people what your sexual orientation is, so they would not ask. Coming back into the real world, everyone can see that is not the case.

Seeing that this has been going on for years, it is quite difficult to change people’s minds about this whole idea of everyone being treated equally. There is hope that, one day, things will change. In fact, in May 2013, France became the ninth European country to legalise same-sex marriage. Progress is slowly being made, but it at least is making a difference.

Overall, it should not matter what your sexual orientation is; one day that will be the case all over the world. People should be accepted for who they are, and that alone. Most importantly, love is love; it should not matter as long as it makes people happy.

In Utah, state rulings and the Supreme Court meet resistance with nearly a thousand same-sex couples who were married before the law was suspended on Dec. 20, 2013. As of Jan. 13, the federal government has recognized these marriages, but time will tell whether or not Utah will come around.

Do You Think You’re Beautiful?

The voice of television strongly influences today’s youth and with set “standards” our society is faced with, we often times doubt ourselves. Television is not reality and we should avoid the need to “be like everyone else” and know we are truly unique.

The media plays a large role in today’s society, especially with the easy accessibility of media with television, the Internet and magazines. These sources of mass media allow people to be able to obtain information easily, along with being connected with others all around the world and having entertainment at the very end of our fingertips at all times. However, despite its obvious positives, there are negatives to this as well. Because of how much people have now relied on the media to learn, sometimes bad facts or images are spread around.

One most common negative sides of the media would be subliminal beauty standards. Although in some cases there is encouragement of natural beauty and loving one’s self for who they are, most times an image on “how to look” is implanted

wenty years ago, if someone suggested the idea of people living on Mars, they would have been called crazy. It’s not like that anymore. Now, people are already paying for their spot on the unnamed ship going to Mars.

For people who love adventure, it seems like a no-brainer. Who wouldn’t want to explore Mars, and start a whole new colony that could possibly solve the population problems of Earth? However, the requirements that somehow 200,000 people have already met are a little much.

There are only four spots available on this unnamed space-craft to Mars, planned to launch in 2025. The downside to applying? The former Earthlings will never come back. That means no connections to Earth, because there’s no coming back. That means being prepared to start a whole new life, a whole new colony. The technology for flight return doesn’t exist, and a one way trip apparently reduces the cost. However, if this criteria seems appealing to you, it’s too late now, since the time to

Although such high standards are more obvious towards women, a standard also applies to men, in a way that many do not notice, but in some places is much more obvious: advertisements for male products are almost always displaying an attractive-looking male with toned muscles and a chiseled face. Even in television shows for younger children, a character that is not as toned is made fun of, which creates an idea of men having to have abs or large arms in order to be deemed attractive.

However, with cultural differences, pressures of these standards vary in other countries. A notable place would be South Korea, most significantly being the country’s view on an attractive man. While toned men are still considered at-

tractive, another type of male that are commonly found attractive are “flower boys,” men who, in Western standards, are more on the feminine side. Although these flower boys are more popular among younger age groups, the standard of having to be attractive is important to society there. Plastic surgery is a practice that is common for both men and women and even encouraged by families.

These pressures will always be forced on today’s youth however, as a society we need to understand those pressures are not reality and the only way we can feel “normal” is if we accepct oursleves the way we all are.

The plan after sending the first humans to Mars in 2025 is to send more crews every two years. Right now the plan is to send crews in groups of four, but if they can find a way to expand the craft, they plan to send more. While they do plan to send the technology in 2018, they are not completely sure that it will be totally ready by then. Even the human aspect was supposed to be done in 2023, but it was pushed back.

One aspect that could possibly be causing these setbacks is the money it would take to fund everything. The budget that has been estimated for sending the crew of four to Mars is $6 billion. Lansdorp, in his CNN interview,

would not say how much they had raised, but only that it was over $200,000.

However, reality TV was one possibility floating around. Since a lot of the footage will be very unique which will hopefully have a lot of value. Media coverage is extremely important for the project to “get off the ground.”

While no one knows what the future holds, it seems that the trip to Mars is becoming more and more of a reality. This trip would be a momentous step in space exploration and in the direction of population control. Whatever occurs it is sure to be an important part in our near future.

Boston Inaugurates New Mayor “You are making your voices heard... I am listening — and I always will. I will listen. I will learn. I will lead.”

After the leave of popular mayor of Boston Thomas M. Menino, a new elected official has taken the seat. Mayor Martin “Marty” Walsh took the election and was sworn in on Jan. 6, 2014. He is vocal about his plans to reduce crime and enhance public education in the city of Boston.

• Several parents, teachers and staff of Malden Public Schools speak to the council about a recent controversial policy on holiday vacation days, specifically on Good Friday.

• 7th- and 8th-graders at Forestdale School gets the O.K. to continue a 7-year tradition of visiting Washington D.C. • Possible extension of the Forestdale School is discussed • This was the final meeting for Jennyfer Cabral (Ward 1), Maria DeMaria (Ward 3) and Stephen Winslow (Ward 6).

January 14, 2014 • Malden Reads approached the school committee to reveal their new book selections. They have selected the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot.

• New initiative in progress to enhance schools’ coverage of entry-level jobs in Malden and improve both intellectual drive and economic growth. This involves a “Birth-to-Grade Three” strategy that will improve preschool education.

• The Early Learning Center has had a signifigant impact on young non-native speakers in Malden; 368 students are currently enrolled with 39% on an Individual Education Plan.

• Opportunity in the works for Salem State to partner with Malden High School and create a satellite campus at MHS.

2014 COLBY-SAWYER Scholarships Bobby Madden

A

longside with other scholarships, Bobby Madden was awarded the Colby-Sawyer Progressive Scholarship. The Progressive Scholar Program was built for students who owned leadership positions in their high school and community. They are recognized for their devotion to greatness and academic engagements.

This scholarship was a great opportunity for Madden since it eases the financial burden of college for his family. Also, Madden chose this school specifically because ColbySawyer held a very strong program in his intended field of study. Once hearing about the scholarship, Madden was advised by his mother to reach out and apply for this scholarship. Along with his mother’s advice, Madden also had friends who attended Colby-Sawyer who believe it was a perfect match for him.

After visiting Colby-Sawyer for the first time, Madden expressed that “[he] really felt at home,” when visiting. Besides the eye-catching campus, Madden knew exactly what

he plans on accomplishing while attending at Colby-Sawyer. Madden plans on majoring in exercise science. Alongside his major, he will also be completing the requirements for the pre-med program, which will include additional chemistry and biology. Madden confessed that he loves learning about the human body and how it functions.

The application process was very similar to a regular college application, besides the personal interview with a junior in college, who is also a Progressive Scholar. Madden mentioned, “[Erin] Craven was a huge help in terms of assisting me with getting my application done on time and [Carol] Mastromauro also provided me with an extraordinary recommendation letter.”

Besides his outstanding academic grades, Madden is a part of many different clubs and sports teams within Malden High School.

Madden started playing baseball at the age of eight and plans to continue his career while attending Colby-Sawyer College. While juggling baseball and school, Madden is also an active participant in Captains Council, Unified Sports, Helping Hands, and Malden against Cancer.

Throughout his last year at MHS, Madden hopes to “have a positive impact on the MHS community although I just joined the MHS family as a transfer student.” His long term goal includes prospering a professional degree and becoming a physician or physician’s assistant, hoping to specialize in orthopedics.

Through his four years of high school, Madden advises underclassmen to get involved and stay on top of their grades: “you get out of high school what you put into it, make the most out of it.”

olby-Sawyer Progressive Scholarship is a grant that offers full tuition to students that have leadership traits to Colby-Sawyer College.

The scholarship is aimed towards low income students that have the

mong the four winners for the Colby-Sawyer Progressive Scholarship, Eumie Rosiclair had the honor of being one of them. The Colby-Sawyer Progressive program look for students who have leadership qualities and are determined to excel in their future. Rosiclair has specific qualities that helped her become a Colby-Sawyer Progressive scholar.

Rosiclair decided to apply for the scholarship because of her visit to Colby-Sawyer College. The college stood out to Rosiclair and she confessed that it pushed her comfort zone in a positive way. Rosiclair stated that by being a part of a small campus, she would be able to become an active participant within her community.

The most influential person that Rosiclair looked up to was her older sister. Rosiclair’s sister encouraged her to apply for the scholarship. “It would be a great opportunity to become integrated in a small community,” stated Rosiclair.

In fact, Rosiclair’s older sister is actually a junior in the Progressive Scholars program. When Rosiclair heard her sister talk more about all

the opportunities there were, Rosiclair could not say no.

Since Colby-Sawyer College is a much smaller campus than a regular college campus, Rosiclair appreciates the less populated campus. Rosiclair expressed it is one of the beneficial aspects of attending Colby-Sawyer. In the four years Rosiclair will be attending the college, she already would “have created relationships with both [her] professors and peers.” While attending Colby-Sawyer, Rosiclair hopes to major in business administration and minor in legal studies. Rosiclair intends to be able to pursue business law.

The process of applying to this scholarship was nerve-wracking to Rosiclair. The only impression that the admissions officer had of her was determined in a forty minute interview. After that, Rosiclair submitted her application. Although Rosiclair was very successful, she knew she could not have accomplish all this without the support that she had. “[She] would definitely say that [she] was borderline harassing Victoria Lipinski, Jennifer Clapp and Natalia Santiago,” expressed Rosiclair.

Rosiclair was apart of the track team her freshman and sophomore year. Although Rosiclair had to stop to focus on her studies, she enjoyed it. While attending college, Rosiclair wants to take classes and travel. In the future, Rosiclair hopes to graduate from Colby-Sawyer where she will receive her master’s degree in business then go to law school. Then Rosiclair hopes to be able to practice someday.

After her experience of applying to college, Rosiclair advised next year’s senior “to start everything early.” The application process is tedious and very stressful. Rosiclair admitted that “procrastination is the root of your stress senior year.”

Brito explained that the interview was the most nerve-wracking, especially because it was so short and she had felt nervous that it had not gone well, but “apparently [it] did.” Brito is still astonished and “it [does not] seem real.” She describes the feeling of being accepted by the Colby Sawyer Scholarship as a “bittersweet victory.” Colby-Sawyer’s aim is to add diversity within the student body, and see what other students may bring to the school.

Brito plans to major in psychology, and “focus on children, especially [children] that face traumas or illnesses.” Brito expressed her tour on campus as beautiful through the view she had seen. Although it was a cold and rainy day, Brito described the campus as “warm and friendly,” thanks to the professors and students that guided her through the college. Brito “[was] amazed [at] how peaceful it was there.” The campus, she claims, was a “little

heaven on earth.” Brito wishes to carry on “[Malden High School’s] love for diversity and culture,” and to grow as much as she can as a person and student, similar to the way she did at MHS. She also added that she will not forget the lessons she has learned at the school, which lead to the “best four years of [her] life.”

Brito is a down to earth person and cares for others. She not only juggles work and school, but she is constantly involved in her community and her school, a perfect scholar for Colby-Sawyer. She has worked at the YWCA for two years, and she is now raising awareness for causes in the community that many people have been tackling.

Brito has contributed immensely to her school work and her help to the community. She hopes that people will continue the work “[she] left behind,” such as the child mentoring program (L.M.C), and to inspire underclassmen to “believe in themselves and never give up.”

The student must attain a 3.0 to a 4.0 G.P.A during high school to be qualified, and must also be involved in their community or other activities. Senior Kelly Brito was given the scholarship and is now is one step closer to reaching her goals.

Brito addressed that she has received words of guidance from her teachers as well as other influential individuals in her life. Questbridge Scholarship Awarded To Moore Julie Lam Managing Editor of Local

A

s we are nearing the halfway point of the year, the seniors are almost one step closer to their future. Among all of them, Malden High School senior Courtney Moore was on pace with her preparations for college. Moore was proudly awarded the QuestBridge Scholarship to Davidson College for her outstanding qualities as a student.

The QuestBridge Program selects a handful amount of students from all over the country who are talented, low-income students.

These bright students have the opportunity to be awarded with a full four year scholarship to schools in partnership with Questbridge that include Brown University, Yale University, Dartmouth College, Emory University, and so on. To be awarded as a QuestBridge Scholar among the aggressive competition is a remarkable accomplishment.

Moore described the application for QuestBridge as a very long process. In the first round, Moore originally chose seven different schools that interested her. After applying, Moore waited until she heard back. After she found out

that she was a finalist for the QuestBridge Scholarship, Moore decided to narrow her choices down to five schools since she only had about one week to submit all their work.

Finally, within those five schools, Moore was proudly matched with Davidson College.

Moore expressed that “[she admired QuestBridge’s goal] of allowing high-achieving, low-income students to apply to the country’s best colleges.” It was during her sophomore year when Moore was introduced to the QuestBridge Scholarship. Moore was intrigued instantly with the fact that she was able to receive a full ride to college.

It was something that meant a lot

to herself and also her family. “The scholarship is incredibly competitive, and that was one of the hardest things to come to terms with,” mentioned Moore. Only 10% from the entire pool of applicants were selected. Moore was among the 10% who was a finalist.

With the support of her family and the help of her teachers, Moore was able to complete the application process. “I also have to give a very special thank you to [Brian] Morrison, [Berenice] Diaz, and [Susan] Lessard,” said Moore.

As of right now, Moore is not sure of what she will major in Davidson College. She mentioned her love for science and interest in go-

ing towards that path, but it is not guaranteed. At MHS, Moore stated that her favorite subject is physics, but she does not know if that will be what she studies at college.

Some of the careers that Moore has in mind include becoming a teacher, an emergency room physician, or a veterinarian.

Moore advises underclassmen to start their college applications as soon as possible. There will be people who encourage and also discourage you through the college process. “Ultimately, it comes down to what you want,” expressed Moore. It was a very bittersweet journey for Moore, but “[it] was definitely worth it though.”

he Internet has opened up so many different forms of communication throughout the years, bringing more benefits through a computer as each day goes by. First came instant messaging, and then came social media, where everyone could connect in all different kinds of ways.

Although the web has brought many upsides to communication with others, it is also possible that the web can be used in negative

ways. The topic of the risks within the computer screen and what is really behind it became the discussion that speakers Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Chief of the Cyber Protection Unit, David Solet, talked about to the freshman class on Dec. 13, 2013.

After Principal Dana Brown finalized his introduction of the first speaker, Ryan, she stepped onto the stage, prepared to lecture the new students of Malden High School on the dangers of the internet. Ryan proceeded to name a few examples of the many cases where people trusted those they found on social media.

dent where someone who pretended to be a 15-year-old girl turned out to be a 35-year-old man. Discussion during the presentation centered around the risk of not knowing who was really creating the words in the message, and not truly knowing the person you may message.

Finished with the examples she brought forth, Ryan introduced Solet, who covered the further details into the dangers of the web.

He covered all kinds of situations, ranging from people hiding behind the picture of another person, or situations where one would find someone through the information they give through the computer.

Solet emphasized the importance of being careful: “[It is] very natural to feel like you know this person.” Through extensive work on Internet-related cases, he noticed that “one of the things [he sees] most often are chat transcripts that later led to crimes” involved the phrases “‘I feel like I’ve known you forever...I feel like we’re best friends.’” Although some people “who have never had these connections themselves” may detect the ridiculousness in these words, it is still very common.

Another topic that came up was cyberbullying, which has had a rising rate as each year goes by. As communication through the web

becomes more advanced, from texts to social media, to pictures, new opportunities constantly open up to those who aim to verbally attack others. The speakers spent time explaining how important it is to tell someone about cyber bullying, or to not do it, for cyber bullying has been a problematic issue: children and teenagers have resorted to taking their own life to end the stress.

POETRY OUT LOUD MAKES MHS PROUD! Sumya Mohiuddin Head of Local

ecember was once a festive month where Malden High School students looked forward to the long- awaited vacation, but before they can start to celebrate, all students from grades 9 to 12 had to perform one poem in front of their class for Poetry Out Loud (POL).

When teachers mention POL for the first time of the year, students already know what to expect. Memorizing poems, practicing them, and reciting them for days might turn into weeks, and for some, into months.

Running through the familiar POL website, students choose the best poem for them out of hundreds, and begin their path to another year of POL. Poetry Out Loud was recently named a national competition, where high school students across the United States memorize and recite a poem to various audiences. Malden High School began this tradition only years ago, and each and every student has been doing it since.

Although several high schools across the nation participate in POL, MHS is the only one that proudly requires all students to participate. The performances vary, but all students have the opportunity to “master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage” through reciting poetry, as stated by the POL website.

Students who are typically quiet have the chance to learn how to express themselves through words that carry a deeper meaning. Peers, as well as teachers, may be surprised at the potential one can have within the recitation of their poem.

Many teachers find the POL competition important towards the progress of the student’s academic career. Although it does not seem evident at first, POL is a way for a student to bring out their inner performer.

The first POL performances of 2013-2014 were done just at the beginning of December. Poems are chosen after individual requirements are given by each teacher. After weeks of preparation, students can flaunt their talent to the class, and maybe move on to the semi- finals, where each class winner competes against other winner from the same period in the Jenkins auditorium. From there, two students from each period competition, which add up to a total of 14, move forward to the school finals, held on Jan. 28, 2014. Here, one student will move on to regionals.

While sophomores and beyond have been through the process of Poetry Out Loud before, this is completely new to the freshmen. Junior Heresa Guerrier advises future performers “to have fun while [they] are performing; [she thinks] that is key to a great performance!”

Although many students are nervous before their recitation, a lot of them learn key skills that are important for their futures. Some learn more about themselves through the meaning behind their poems, which is what makes POL such a great experience for high school students.

A

s students hungrily awaited the holiday break, an important Malden High School tradition is the winter holiday concert. On Dec. 18, 2013, the Jenkins auditorium was filled with people eager to enjoy the show, which was performed by the MHS choral arts society and concert band at the direction of Todd Cole and John Natelli, respectively.

The concert began with a performance of “Happy Christmas (War is Over)”, originally written and performed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The show continued with many other winter classics, such as “Last Christmas” by George Michael and the traditional German Christmas tree anthem, “O Tannenbaum,” accompanied by MHS junior Sebastian Patino’s narration.

The band’s performance was applauded and admired by everyone watching. Senior student conductor Winnie Chen stated that “it is [incredible] to watch each other grow, to be role models for one another, and most importantly, [what sets us apart is] we are a group of kids that push each other to achieve our own potentials.”

This is Natelli’s first winter holiday concert at MHS, as he has been

a replacement for previous band director Matthew Tavares for only a short amount of time. Chen stated that due to the sudden change, the band is still in “a transition phase.”

She added that, “as time goes on, we will recreate this bond with this new director and cherish what we had with the last!” Fittingly, at the end of the concert, the senior members

Next, the madrigals, containing mostly MHS seniors, performed several more carols along with another John Lennon standby, “Imagine,” which is an MHS tradition has performed it several times before.

would enjoy.”

Other songs by the concert choir included “The Chanukah Song (We Are Lights),” with solo performances by Patricia Seun and Jules Skiffington, and “Do You Hear What I Hear,” as well as “O, Holy Night,” which featured soloists Stephanie Joseph and Ramy Neves Riviere. This song ended the night with a strong performance.

Senior Patricia Seun, choir manager, stated that as a whole, “chorus is filled with so many different characters...that gathering everyone’s attention to focus sometimes is tough. But at the end of the day...we [are] able to pull it together the night our efforts matter the most.” Seun also added that at the end of the performances, “the flowers made my last winter concert so very special because it was so unexpected. I’m surrounded by so many of these wonderful people on a daily basis and those flowers just reminded me that I’m incredibly grateful for a number of those choir members.”

The seniors from both the concert band and concert choir were honored during their last MHS winter concert ever. They will surely be remembered throughout the hallways of the school as well as during the concerts of years to come.

Celebrating the one year anniversary of the TEEN ENRICHMENT Center Sumya Mohiuddin Head of Local

he future of the city of Malden changed when proud leaders came together and outlined their plan for a new development in the city: the Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC).

MTEC Coordinator Catherine MacMullin initially worked with Marie Brown to begin a new chapter in our proud city.

What started out as an idea transformed into a successful development.

MTEC Coordinator MacMullin and Brown visited the YMCA, where Debbie Amaral, Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA, agreed to give free space to the students every other Friday night; afterwards, volunteers and donations poured in. After experiencing the success at the YMCA, Principal Dana Brown, Beth Rosa, a member of the Malden Redevelopment Authority, and Gary Christenson, before he was elected Mayor, took time to help with the new plans. These plans included creating an area where students had access to recreation and education help daily.

Gregory Lucey, a retiree from the city council, was also asked for help when MacMullin wanted to achieve

her dream of bringing a teen center to Malden. Because of all the endless support, it was finally possible. After several donations from trusted foundations, the possibilities were endless. The center was well on its way to becoming a dream come true.

Televisions and pool tables decorated the place. The interior design, created by Molly Pidgeon, successfully fulfilled the vision of the MTEC. Although the structure of the place stayed the same, the center gained a tutoring and leadership program over the course of the year.

Overall, there are ups and downs to working virtually anywhere, including MacMullin’s job at the MTEC. However, she mentioned how “there is no more frustration after 2 p.m.,” when around 120 students come in daily.

The MTEC celebrated their one year anniversary on Dec. 12, 2013. The staff helped plan the event; the board of directors were invited, and around 180 students participated as well.

With a peak of 550 Malden teens as members of the center, the potential of the center only increases.

Martha Coakley Visits Malden High School Sumya Mohiuddin Head of Local

T

o honor Computer Science Education Week, (Dec. 9-15), math and computer programming teacher Paul Marques and his students invited Attorney General Martha Coakley to teach an “Hour of Code”, which is a session demonstrated nationwide.

Coakley, who is currently campaigning for a position as governor, has a busy past that involves bringing justice to those who needed it, and creating prevention programs, relating to drugs and alcohol, in schools and communities. She wants to become a leader for the people and protect them from injustice.

The purpose of the week was to “emphasize computer science” and increase the number of students nationwide. Currently, 60 percent of highlevel jobs involve computer science. Also, there is a wide gap in the male to female ratio of those working in computer science.

Around 15 of Marques’ students were in attendance. Sophomore Mohsin Qureshi expressed

his joy when many people attended and “[liked] the activities that were available through the website.”

They spent an hour on Dec. 13, 2013 learning code.

Students, such as Qureshi himself, sophomore Efran Himel, and senior Nidal Hishmeh, helped plan and execute the session. Qureshi took a large part in planning the event and “making sure everything went well.”

After Coakley assisted the group of students and talked to them about the importance of computer science, Qureshi assessed that “she seemed genuinely interested” in the students and their work.

Overall, because people use technology everyday, computer science has an impact on our lives either directly or indirectly. Qureshi believes that “[it comes] down to how [computer science] changes the way [someone thinks]. [It helps someone] break problems down and think logically and in steps.”

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE REVIEW “This [movie] is on fire!”

T

he Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is the second installment in The Hunger Games series, based off of Suzanne Collins’ novels. Directed

by Francis Lawrence, this movie follows Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) in her struggle against the treacherous Capital City.

As far as this movie’s cast goes, it has a few heavy hitters. The lead actress Jennifer Lawrence is of course the star of the movie, and her acting has improved greatly since the last Hunger Games, and it shows in the movie. Among others, Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth are two other well known actors.

But it is not the stars that make a movie of course, it is the acting that they put forward. From Jennifer Lawrence’s performance, down to the uncredited extras, the acting is an overall improvement since the last installment in the Hunger Games series, and it is felt through both the characters shown, and the viewers of the movie. As far as Jennifer Lawrence’s part goes, she plays Katniss Everdeen and she pulls the character off well. You really feel everything given out by her, whether its small flickers of emotion in her face, or erratic screams of rage.

Of course Woody Harrelson plays a fantastic broken, drunk man as Haymitch, and Josh Hutcherson really brings his role together as Peeta. As a viewer I felt that some of the exchanges between characters were just plain awkward in the first installment, and awkward was not the intended feeling. However, the chemistry between many characters

in the movie is a whole lot smoother, and at times you almost get lost in the conversations, immersing yourself into the world of Panem. When there are conversations between rivals you can really feel the uneasy tension in the air, as well as the bitter anger in each character’s eyes.

Speaking of uneasy, the strong loveplot in the movie feels much more real than in the past installment and is much more believable as well as relatable.

The special effects and camera work were put to an impressive use in this film, showing us a much broader and beautiful view of the forests and ruins of Panem. While special effects were always great since the first installment, they are definitely an improvement, and there a couple of moments in the film that are worth a loud “WOAH.” The camerawork is also great, using angles and elevation that show what you want to see of the movie. I am extremely happy to say that this movie is NOT an offender of the

now popular “shaky camera” style, and manages to get your attention without making you motion-sick.

The audio experience goes hand-in-hand with the video, and makes sure you are affected by what you hear, whether its the deafening roar of a gong or the quiet sound of snapping sticks. Audio quality is more important than most people realize, and it meshes pretty fluently with the tone and visuals of the flick.

Speaking of tone, this movie has a dark one. While this is still a PG-13 rated movie, it is a serious jump from the last one. While teenagers murdering each other in a twisted gladiator ring is dark enough, this movie adds all kinds of feelings that make you sink further back into your seat, and grip tightly onto your armrests. The tone comes in a form of certain seriousness.

Events and characters are thrown together, and at times it hits you hard. You really get a good taste of the “this is it” mentality. Of course the tone is effective, but not to the

point where you walk out with your view on all of life changed and you jump around, glad that you are alive.

Then of course comes the all-important question. “Is it true to the novels?!” Being a reader of the novels myself, I have to say that for the most part yes, the movie is accurate. As any other movie adaptation of a novel will have, Catching Fire does cut out a few scenes and lines from the novels, but rest assured it is nothing too major. Really, the only way the movie does not seem to be true to the novels, is in the form of conveniences. While the novel may explain a more in-depth plan or a character’s reasons and thoughts for an action, the movie displays it in a more subtle way.

You can tell Katniss is figuring out a problem by the expression on her face, rather than a train of thought. Again this just makes it seem like there are a lot of conveniences that come together in the movie that are not explained, but this is the only real detour from the novel I picked up on with the movie.

So, in conclusion The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is definitely a movie worth seeing, fan or not of the original novels. The acting is spot on, camera-work and visuals work well with the audio, and tone grabs you and only slightly loosens until the movie ends. For diehard fans of the novels, it is a must-see, for the average person, it is a good time out.

It is safe to say that you will have a lot of fun with this movie.

Resolutions...We All Have Tried Them Remember when keeping resolutions...

- Pinpoint your most realistic resolutions (focus on one resolution to be able to keep it) - Write it down (sticky note, journal, agenda) - Estimate a time frame to see change (review your progress) - Reward yourself (indulge in something you like/buy something you’ve held off on) Casey Lyons Head of Entertainment, Style, & Lifestyle

Every year it seems only logical to make new resolutions and commit to them but does the attempt to fulfill them ever get fully accomplished? If you are guilty of abandoning resolutions shortly after establishing them, make 2014 the year to achieve them. Resolutions may be cliche or sound like a waste of time but give them a try and make an effort to improve the new year from the last. Resolutions can easily make the year more smooth and less stressful. Of course, it is not simple to remain consistent and adjust to your newfound commitment but it could be less challenging if you narrow your resolutions to one or two that you know that you can commit to.

Start off by pin-pointing resolutions that are the most realistic, attainable, and beneficial for you. The most realistic resolutions will evidently be the most rewarding in the end because you know that it is the most attainable for you. For instance, if your resolution is to become more healthy or organized both will only improve your health and well-being -they are essentially achievable and beneficial.

After deciding upon a resolution make sure to keep a record of it. Write it down somewhere you know that you will be constantly reminded so you will be more motivated to pursue your resolution. A sticky note on your computer, bulletin board, or some place obvious (where you know you will see it at least once a day) will help keep it enveloped in your mind. Or write it down in places like a journal or agenda to have a daily reminder. Overall, you want a constant reminder because no one besides yourself can encourage you to reach your goal.

You will then want to set an estimated date that you think that you will be able to achieve your resolution. There will be no immediate results so give yourself a reasonable time gap to see changes. Consider the extent of the goal and measure out how long it will take to significant change. Also create checkpoints in between to keep track of your progress. Mark certain dates that you can check off your progress and where you are in achieving your goal. It will help you determine if you should apply yourself more or if you are in a good shape.

Finally, reward yourself -afterall you deserve it. Indulge in a guilty pleasure to remind yourself of all the hard work you did to earn it. For instance, buy something you have been holding off on or treat yourself to a personal day and do things that is rewarding for you.

Change is hard to accomdate to but with a little encouragement and determination resolutions can be achieved. It may be hard to at first but seeing progress will make it easier to strive on. Do not give up on your resolutions because 2014 can be the year of postive change and acomplishment.

A New Wave Of Music: Deadmau5

In this generation that is dominated by rap, hip-hop, pop, and r&b, not many other genres receive the love and recognition that they deserve.

One such genre which is slowly being more and more recognized is Electronic Dance Music (EDM), which houses the more mainstream subgenre of dubstep.

Artists of this genre are referred to as EDM producers. Though many confuse the profession with those of Disc Jockeys, EDM producers are not all DJs necessarily.

One such artist who’s at the forefront of the EDM genre’s wave of popularity is Joel Thomas Zimmerman, better known by his alias, Deadmau5 (pronounced ‘dead·mouse’).

Zimmerman was born on January 5, 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. From a young age Zimmerman was creating all sorts of sounds that evolved into now what is loved by many. Deadmau5 is well-known for his rather large headdress, known as the mau5head. Its design is based on the artist’s logo and Zimmerman was inspired to wear a real-life version of the design by his friend, industrial metal musician Jay Gordon. With the flamboyance of the mau5head, it has become a sort of icon, and a trend, as many fans who attend his concerts show love and support by wearing their own version of the mau5head in an assortment of colors.

Deadmau5 has been creating music since 1998, but only put out his first single in 2001, and became known recently. Zimmerman established his own record label in 2007, called Mau5trap, which features fellow EDM artists. He currently has released 6 official studio albums, but has many more discs such as 3 self-released albums, 5 mix albums, 3 remix albums, 5 extended plays, 2 live albums, as well a compilation one and an album featuring of his labelmates’ music.

Throughout his career as an EDM producer, Deadmau5 has been nominated an extraordinary 24 whole times, winning 11 of those nominations. From the Beatport Music Awards, Zimmerman received 6 nominations, and missed winning only one. He was even nominated for a Grammy 5 times, though unfortunately, he didn’t take home an award. At the International Dance Music Awards, Deadmau5 was nominated 4 more times and took home 3 awards.

Zimmerman also was nominated 6 more times for the Juno Awards and

won half those nominations. Some prestigious awards Deadmau5 was nominated for and/or won were the ‘Dance Recording Of The Year’ for 3 straight years (2008-2010), ‘Best Dance/Electronica Album’, ‘Best Remix’, and ‘Best Progressive House Artist’ distinctions. Also, ever since 2008, Deadmau5 has had high ranks in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs list, a list recognizing the most popular DJs and producers of the EDM genre.

Deadmau5 has been 11th, 6th, 4th, 4th, 5th, and 12th places in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, respectively. Zimmerman has received his many awards, and as his popularity grows, so will the number of awards.

Zimmerman loves his job and states that while he wishes his genre could get more recognition for all the hard work producers put in, he’s not in the business for the cash anyways. “If I wanted to make money for the sake of making money, believe me, I would go into real estate long before EDM,” he laughed.

Striding Towards Victory Cassandra Reyes Reporter

assion and talent: the two qualities that have driven the Malden High School’s boys track team to have a successful season thus far. The early season defeats against Medford and Everett gave the boys an optimistic mindset for what they had ahead. Coaches David Londino, Jason Payeur, and Chris Kaulbfliesch are proud of what the boys have accomplished in just a little more than a month of training and practicing.

A team goal for every season is to get as many boys to qualify for states as possible and to win the Greater Boston League championship title.

and have brought them together.

Senior runner Daniel Gould says the new additions to the team have added “strength and depth to the team.” New runners who have displayed great talent have given the team just the right pieces needed to have a high chance of going undefeated the whole season.

In the beginning weeks of the season, there have been many Division 1 state qualifying individual and group performances. Junior Mark Ortiz has qualified in the shot put, along with senior David Kibazo in the 1000m, freshman Isaac Mukala in the 600m, senior Richard Mulo in the 55m, and the boys 4 by 400m relay which consists of Mukala, junior Kingdolphe Julien, junior Nahom Ghile, and Kibazo.

With the hardest part of the season approaching, having five meets over the span of thirteen days, all of the boys have been looking for ways to contribute their best to the team.

Photos by Cassandra Reyes top ten in his event, “has a pretty good shot at breaking the school’s 1000m record set by Yusuf Mohamed in 2011.” Londino also added that “[Mulo] puts a lot of work into his start and I think his best times will come in the next few weeks.” Mulo is also ranked top ten in the 55m, with a time of 6.69 seconds.

This year’s team has a strong group of seniors who are ready

to lead the underclassmen, by example, to a remarkably successful season and future seasons. The performances made by the boys track team have been very impressive.

With positive energy and talent in many different areas, the boys track team definitely has something to look forward to.

aking physical and mental improvements to have the best possible outcomes, the Malden High School’s girls track team is off to a great start. New strategies and workouts have the girls and coaches David Londino, Jason Payeur and Chris Kaulbfliesch feeling confident about defeating the other schools in the Greater Boston League and also having successful performances at invitationals.

With limited space on the team, this marks the second year that cuts have had to been made from the team. There was an excessive amount of talent in the gym on the day of tryouts and the coaches found it very difficult to have to make cuts.

Junior Victoria Hannafin says “all of the girls are working really hard to get better and it’s showing when it comes to meets,” which sounds accurate, since the girls have gone 2-0, with impressive wins against Medford who they tied last year, and Everett. Sophomore Deborah Kibazo has given her teammates a tip that will boost their confidence going into a meet: “It’s 10% athletic ability, and the rest is all mental.”

The hard work of the team has paid off, seeing that many of the girls have had Division 1 state meet qualifying performances. Among those qualifiers are Hannafin in the mile, junior Amalika Lucien in the 55m, sophomore Carine Exume also in the 55m, and sophomore Carly Amos in the shot put. Amos is ranked the top thrower among freshmen and sophomores in Division 1. With new throwing coach, Kaulbfliesch, Amos is sure to continue making improvements. Londino says that Hannafin “has shown versatility with strong performances in the 600m, 1000m, mile, and 2 mile.”

Leaving only two dual meets left in the chilly winter season, the girls have been assured by their coaches that they have the capability of going into those meets very well prepared. On top of those two meets against big competitors Cambridge and Somerville, there are three other invitationals which many of the girls will attend, all over a 13-day span.

With a great work ethic from the sprinters, throwers, and the distance runners, the team has really come together and has a common goal of wanting to be the GBL Champions.

MHS Boys Basketball PJ Montezuma Head of Sports

A

fter their last shot fell short last season and the loss of senior captains Rodney Morton and Tommy Steele, the Malden High School boys varsity basketball team looked forward to starting off where they last finished and have an even more successful season. Being lead by captains Seniors Bryan Mitchell and Loveng Francois and junior Anthony Gilardi, the team has started off the season going 4-3. The boys started off on a 3 game win streak, including an intense final second free throw shot in their home opener against Brighton beating them 6362. A huge surprise was the loss to MHS rival, Cambridge, by only one point 54-53. The team has a lot to look forward to this season like facing their major rival Everett.

After beating them at MHS with a buzzer beater last year, the suspense is unraveling.

I

mprovement. Defined as the act or process of making something better, everything can be improved. And for the Malden High School’s girls basketball team, improvement has come in their favor.

Lead by coach Lydia Coverdale, the MHS team is back and more ready than ever to make the most out of this winter season.

However with a few changes, the team is learning to adjust.

The team is lead by a single captain and junior Michaela Ilebode, due to the vote of only one captain from last year’s former senior captains Lisa DeLacey, Bridget Furlong, and Norma BourquePimentel. Although she believes “[that] a lot of responsibilities fall on [one’s] shoulders [when they are the only captain]” Ilebode is working to her potential, improving the team as well as herself.

Beginning the season with a rough start, the team is currently holding a record of 0-5. Losses included those against Georgetown, Lynnfield Swampscott, Wakefield, and fellow Greater Boston League rival Cambridge Rindge and Latin.

With only two seniors on the the team, Regine Exume and Blue and Gold member Kristen Leonard, the roster is a junior dominated team. As well as Ilebode, Jaime MacDonald, Shannon Gibson, Samantha Drapinski, Robyn Santo, and Dymond Jones are just some of the juniors. In addition, there are two sophomores, Janaya Walcott and Lea Haehnel, and only one freshman on the team, Hezel Haehnel. Haehnel “sees [herself] as just another player on the court” despite from the fact that she is the youngest on the team.

Despite the rocky start, the team hopes to improve as a team as well as individually throughout each practice and game. Both personal and team goals have been set and are ready to be accomplished. With about a month and a half left of the winter season, the girls have more than enough time to make this basketball season the best MHS has seen.

ith the cold winter temperatures comes a new season of gymnastics for the Malden High School team. One may expect to find them tumbling at the Salemwood School gym yet this would be incorrect. The team is experiencing some major changes as opposed to years past with a new facility being open. Next to the weight room at MHS, a room fully dedicated to gymnastics has been created. The team is unbelievably grateful for this new facility as, “it is more like the gym everyone on the team with gymnastics experience is used to,” says senior captain Justine Rose. This also gives newcomers a better learning environment where they can get a firmer understanding of the sport while improving their technique.

With better equipment and more space, as opposed to the cramped middle school gym, this new room gives the team an opportunity to reach their full potential.

A

s the days become shorter and the temperature drops, hours in the gym are spent by the Malden High School’s wrestling team, all with one goal in mind, the GBL title.

Led by coach Jeremiah Smith, time and patience is precious, as he believes those are the keys to success.

With the title in mind, each individual wrestler also hopes to place into the state tournament and advance well into the stages of it.

With a current record of 1-7, the team is doing everything possible to achieve their goal of winning the title. Senior captain Nidal Hishmeh hopes for the team to “continue the success” it has experienced. Hishmeh believes that it’s not always bad to lose a match “...as long as you are satisfied with the effort that you’ve put forward.”

This team is “really supportive of each other” says Smith. And Hishmeh agrees, “being in the same room for hours after school every day for months really builds a sense of brotherhood between members.”

by Hishmeh himself, senior co-captain Phillip West, junior Kelly Jean Charles, and others, brought happiness to the school. The Wakefield tournament was a good showing of what this team is capable of doing, with captain Hishmeh bringing home the gold, going 4-0 in the 160 pound weight class.

On Jan. 9, 2014, the team had an away match at Malden Catholic.

There were outstanding performances, for instance, one by junior Johnny Pierre, who won by points.

When a wrestler achieves 15 points, then their opponent automatically loses the match, and that is how a wrestler wins “by points”.

Learning from past experiences, each individual is striving to become more advanced and improve so wins can be later brought home.

As we host more matches, it is not only the coach but the players’ wish for more supporters.

MHS cheerleading dives into the winter season cheering on the boys basketball team.

inter sports at Malden High School begins and the cheerleading team moves from the football field to the gym. Starting off the new season, they are eager to improve as a team, welcome the new members, improve on their skills, and cheer for the boys basketball team.

The coach and captains are expecting many things out of both returning and new team members.

Co-captain and senior Cori Malone is "expecting a lot of excitement out of the freshmen girls this season," and for the returning members to "step up and help the new girls, be mature during games and set good examples not only for the new girls but for girls who want to cheer in the future." Coach Diana Buonopane is "very impressed with the incoming freshmen class," and says that, "there

are some talented young ladies that have added to the skills and success of both the junior varsity and varsity teams."

Buonopane, who has been coaching cheerleading at MHS for four years now, has set goals for her team this year, one being to "build on existing skills for the next competition season." According to Buonopane, the team has, "so many amazing personalities and talented young women amongst the team.

The team has been cheering on the boys at their basketball games this season, and have been working hard at both the games and practices. When asked if she had any words of wisdom to her team, Buonopane said, "always work hard and put forward your best effort."

alden High School’s swim team is taking their season by storm. Sporting a 3-0 record with their last victory against Medford, the team is riding on a wave of confidence. The success hasn’t gone to their heads; the team remains diligent and is making sure they do not lose their title of undefeated. Senior captain Bestine Cong even has “being undefeated this season,” on her list of goals for the team.

The team is still staying very humble, and they are always looking for ways to improve.

Cong describes her team as “pretty young...made up of mostly underclassmen,” and that her focus is to help build better bonds between the team members, even though “overall, [they are] pretty close.” Sophomore Alex Lombardi says jokingly that “a few more events outside the pool would help, because it’s really hard to talk underwater.”

Sophomore Samantha Forestier adds that the team could work on “their stroke [and] speed,” and admits that “there is always room for improvement.”

Another impressive feat continues to be the team’s undefeated status. After seizing victory in their last meet against Medford, this brings their record to 3-0. Lombardi enthusiastically includes that she believes this year’s team is “the best it has ever been!” Cong says that “the team is off to a strong start.” She compliments her teammates by saying that they “push themselves at every meet.”

Under the captaining of Cong, the MHS swim team has high expectations for the current, and already bright, season. Aside from retaining their undefeated label, they hope to win their GBL meet and become GBL champions this season, as well as, in Cong’s words, “sending a lot of swimmers to sectionals and state [meets].” Lombardi includes that the team “has the potential to

become GBL stars!”

In terms of physical work, the team has definitely peaked. They push harder and harder every practice, under the supervision of great captains and great coaches. With their goals clearly mapped out and their practices more intense than ever, the MHS swim team promises greatness.
