TEXILES RESTORERS’ GUILD NEWARK-ON-TRENT, UK Based in the home of the largest antique market in Europe, Newark-on-Trent, the Textiles Restorers’ guild is a space where professional textile restorers can restore museum quality textiles, and a space where everyday people can learn how to mend their clothes.

The project is a retrofit & extension to the Corn Exchange, a Grade II listed building, first constructed in 1848, with an Italian Baroque facade. The building has a direct connection to landmarks of Newark, such as the River Trent, the high street and Newark Market.

Throughout the building, textiles are celebrated, with tapestries being hung throughout the building. The facade allows fabrics to be switched out from the inside and outside of the building depending on aesthetic and environmental purposes.

Some of the key considerations of the design included restoring the existing building, creating a connection from the high street to the river, and translating the theme of old &

I was playing around with the heights of the extension, but decided that they shouldn’t tower over and overshadow the existing building.

lighting strategy diagram of central space In the heart of the existing building, I wanted to create a flexible space that can be used for clothes restoration classes, and can be transformed into a fashion runway in which people and local designers can showcase their work. The frosted glass runway is the focal point of the space, and helps allow some light into the basement.

facade construction diagrams The lighting and atmospheric conditions of the exhibition space can be changed by adding or removing curtains from the timber mullions on the facade.

The mullions on the facade also have steel connections so that curtains, or even artwork/tapestries can be attached to the facade.

When looking at the site and the existing building, I realised that there is no step free entry to the building, which I wanted to resolve through the extension. The extension also acts as a bridge from the street to the river, a space to view the castle and the river, a space to exhibit hanging textiles.

CO-HOUSING FOR THE VISUALLY/ HEARING IMPAIRED SHEFFIELD, UK Located along London Road, Sheffield, the cohousing scheme is designed for families with visual and/or hearing impairments alongside residents without sensory impairments. Sensory design was central to the project, with elements such as tactile finishes and a scented garden for wayfinding.

The project encourages community building through the cohousing model and interacting with the broader neighbourhood through the Common House, which includes a public nursery and study spaces in which members of the wider community can visit.

Alongside the cohousing scheme, I also introduced different neighbourhood interventions to create a tighter communitiy. This included changing the park North of the site into a community garden and playground. I also introduced more pedestrian crossings which allows for safer crossing for residents with visual impairments.

Natural, north facing light was key for this project, as the more diffused light is better suited to those with visual impairments. Therefore I designed the pitch of the roof to capture north facing light, and situated bedrooms towards the north.

Reflecting on the sensory design principles I had established early on the project, I used them to inform the design the nursery in the common house.

THE APIARY & URBAN FARM REYKJAVIK, ICELAND In recent years, bee keeping has become more popular in Iceland, with over 100 bee-keepers in the country. Based in Reykjavik is an indoor farm and apiary which aims to introduce bees to the high street’s ecosystem with local birds and bees. Another aim of the building is educate people on hydroponic farming, a way to harvest food indoors in Iceland’s harsh considitions. The farm grows strawberries, a staple in Icelandic desserts and cuisine.

The project is based along Reykjavik’s high street, laugaveguer St, which is home to many bakeries. The space will also include a bakery where baked goods can be sold and paired up with the honey and strawberries harvested.

The building includes a lift, in which a bee hive is transported from the indoor farm to the rooftop garden during summer. The building adapts with the seasons, by providing shelter in winter & outdoor spaces in spring/summer such as the bee keeping roof.

During spring and summer is peak outdoor beekeeping. During these months, the rooftop garden and the surrounding area is populated by bees.

The tower of the building also encourages more biodiversity to the site, as it includes a biodiveristy habitiat that encourages native birds to visit.

The summer is when the high street, Laugevegur St, is the most active with festivitives and parades taking place on the street. Therefore, I have designed balconies and outdoor spaces within the building to celebrate the festival culture in Iceland.

This disseration assessed Al Asmarat, a national slum relocation and evaluated its effectiveness on the 3 principles of the Egyptain Revolution- opportunity, freedom and social equality.
