Causes and effects of plastic surgery A makeover or a make under?

To operate or not to operate? One of the medical specialties concerned with the "correction" or restoration of form and function is referred to plastic surgery. It is one of the oldest healing arts. Other forms of plastic surgery which have been developing throughout time are cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. Plastic surgery didn’t start until World War 1. In that time, soldiers were coming back from the war deformed.

They all had serious injuries in their faces and bodies as well. But for people nowadays trying to fix each and every minor mistake in their faces or their bodies that doesn’t harm them physically or medically is just over reaction. Walter Yeo, a sailor injured at the Battle of Jutland, is assumed to be the first person to receive plastic surgery in 1917.

God has created each and every person in a different and unique way. People should be recognized by their own features, not by how alike they look to someone they idolize or look up to. The causes of plastic surgery would include cosmetic reasons and treatment of injuries, and for the effects it would involve both psychological and physical.

First of all, plastic surgery is used to treat injuries. People who have been in severe accidents usually have marks and scars that may be permanent, and those scars can only be treated through plastic surgery. Especially for people who tend to have scars 2|Page

on their faces, they are usually the ones with very low self confidence due to how the society reacts towards them. To avoid plastic surgeries, early diagnosis can also help.

Meanwhile, people with severe injuries need to treat, and reconstruct the affected areas. Birth defects and birthmarks can cause severe damage. For instance, skeletal deformities, cleft lips, and ear deformities can cause serious emotional and physical handicap. A child born with physical handicaps can be assigned for reconstructive surgery to modify the physical anomalies. Plastic surgery is used for treating cancer.

For example, a huge amount of women undergo a mastectomy, which is referred to the removal of breast, either fully or partially. After undergoing mastectomy, women require too got through reconstructive surgeries to fix their defects.

Secondly, cosmetic reasons are another cause of plastic surgery. Some plastic surgeries make people feel better about them, and can also boost their self-esteem. As women begin to age, they usually start to pay more attention to their physical appearance, and tend to worry about wrinkles. So to look young and beautiful again, women undergo cosmetic surgeries to remove those wrinkles. After a massive weight loss, there will be excessive skin all over the body in such places as the arms, thighs, tummy, and chest, and to remove that, cosmetic surgery is performed. Women that have very large breast suffer from shoulder, back, and neck pain. They usually seek 3|Page

breast reduction for relief, and are not comfortable with the size of their breast. Surprisingly, men who have enlarged breasts can also be candidates for breast reduction surgeries. However, men who usually intake excessive alcohol, usage of marijuana, or anabolic steroids may cause a disease named gynecomastia. Furthermore, men who continue to use these products are not recommended to undergo breast reduction surgeries. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 70,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery in 1999, while fewer than 40,000 women had the procedure performed in 1992. Breast reduction surgery is becoming more common each year. Women most likely to undergo breast reduction range in age from 19 to 50. Additionally, breast reduction may be needed after reconstructive surgery following the surgical removal of cancerous breast tissue (mastectomy), to make the breasts more symmetric.

Furthermore, the causes of plastic surgery are cosmetic reasons, and treatment of injuries; in addition, the effects of plastic surgery which are psychological and physical.

Third of all, plastic surgery can cause psychological effects. One of the most important affect of plastic surgery is increasing self-esteem. When a person improves their physical appearance, many other factors change, such as: promoting happiness, self-esteem, and self-confidence. At the same time, not all surgeries take the right turn, and not all results are satisfying. When a plastic surgery is gone wrong, many emotions start to appear, such as; depression, and disappointment. Moving on to dangerous actions, when a patient isn’t satisfied with the result of the surgery; the effect of this on the patient can be deadly, and lead to suicidal. Another effect of plastic surgery is when things get out of hand, and addiction happens. In other words, as a 4|Page

patient undergoes plastic surgery for the first time with excellent results, they desire to fix more of their appearance. This addiction can be severely harmful to one’s health. The more you damage your skin, the more you increase the risks of deformation, because not all surgeries go right.

Finally, plastic surgeries do not only cause psychological effects, but also play a huge role in ones physical effects. Before undergoing plastic surgery, an individual must go through a full medical exam to determine whether he or she is ready for the surgery, in order to avoid future harm to the body. People that will be highly affected after plastic surgeries are the ones that have low health statuses. Especially people that suffer from diabetes, they are at greater risk of complications than any other.

In conclusion, plastic surgery can either make your life better or worse. But just like any other process, it has its ups, and downs. For a person to undergo plastic surgery, he or she must always think of the benefits, and consequences of it. And always remember; do not put your hopes up very high, because the results are either with or against you. Each and every individual is unique in their own way; undergoing plastic surgery must only be for necessary cases.

Always make your flaw unique, because each and every person is beautiful in their own way.
