AR’RAQQA DAM THE REJUVENATION OF THE EUPHRATES RIVER, SYRIA

The ecological ramifications of the war in Syria pose a devastating threat to the Syrian landscape. Chemical attacks have left the country exposed to the toxic footprint of the conflict, embodied in the contamination of the soil and water supply of Ar Raqqa’s threatened regions. The severity of these chemicals was realized when lethal levels of chlorine was detected in water streams, irrigation systems and water management facilities of strategic targets adjacent to the Euphrates River, rendering the valuable water incapable of sustaining life.

Our proposal takes on the framework of a post-war remediation process. It aims to implement a filtration system to the west of the Euphrates dam in order to control the levels of chemical contaminants which reach both Syrian and Iraqi agricultural lands.

The school acts as an inventory that collects, archives and distributes all matters that are involved in the learning process of the student. The accessibility of this inventory is, however, negotiated by the school as a mechanism of introducing the students to a new method of learning which prioritises the engagement with previous works and existing resources.

This negotiation is facilitated by the inversion of the traditional space of circulation, or the corridor, with the conventional space of learning, the classroom.

Therefore, the classroom, or what has been newly defined as the space of accessing resources, becomes a series of interconnected courtyards.

The continuity of these courtyards throughout the school is reiterated through a single surface that weaves between all spaces of the school.

This surface begins to operate as a platform for documenting the use and manipulation of given resources. The surface itself hence begins to transform and adapt to the students’ working methods.

Ultimately, the surface will break away from the rigid and systematic way in which resources are provided in the school.

The inventory, within the school, acts as a memory store that collects, archives and distributes all matters that are involved in the learning process of the student. From research, to discussion, to iteration and to fabrication; all stages of the learning process are documented and curated in the inventory as resources.

The distribution of these resources is operated by a retrieval system that comprises of three different types of columns; equipment, multimedia, and written documents.

The accessibility of these resources is therefore governed through the placement of the classroom. Each classroom is located in the school depending on the resources it needs; with direct access to two types of columns.

HABITS OF DISOBEDIENCE EXPLORATION OF A PRE-EXISTING STATE OF POLITICAL PROTEST IN SYDNEY

Spaces of disobedience accomodate for the expression of individual and collective desires that are contradictory of societal norms, therefore exposing the flaws in the political structures which uphold these biased morals.

HABITS OF DISOBEDIENCE THE MODES OF CONSTITUTING THE CITY ARE SO WELL CODED AND PLANNED THAT THEY INDUCE ADVANCED INSTRUCTIONS FOR ITS PROPER USAGE. SPACES IN THE CITY HAVE BEEN DICTATED BY LAWS AND REGULATIONS THAT OPERATE AS DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND ARE INTOLERANT TOWARDS THEIR CHANGE OR TRANSFORMATION. THESE LAWS AND REGULATIONS CANNOT BE DERIVED FROM INDIVIDUAL MORAL IDEALS ALONE, HENCE ARE JUSTIFIED THROUGH ALL INHERENT VALUES OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND SECURITY THAT ARE SPATIALISED AS THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE HOSPITAL, THE SCHOOL, THE DOMESTIC RESIDENCE, AND THE CHURCH. HOWEVER, SUBMISSION TO THE MECHANISMS OF AUTHORITY AND POWER DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE EXCEPT THOSE WHO SERVE AS VEHICLES FOR THE POLITICAL NARRATIVE. SPACES OF DISOBEDIENCE ACCOMODATE FOR THE EXPRESSION OF INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE DESIRES THAT ARE CONTRADICTORY OF SOCIETAL NORMS, THEREFORE EXPOSING THE FLAWS IN THE POLITICAL STRUCTURES WHICH UPHOLD THESE BIASED MORALS. ALTHOUGH APPEARING DIVORCED FROM MORAL CONSIDERATIONS, THE CITY OF SYDNEY’S DISCOURSES OF URBAN PLANNING HAVE TENDED TO PRIVILEGE HETEROSEXUAL, MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIPS. THIS IS REFLECTED IN THE MANIFESTATION OF URBAN LANDSCAPES WHICH NORMALISE THE HETEROSEXUAL, DOMESTIC FAMILY, SUGGESTING THAT COMMERCIAL SEX IS SOMETHING THAT THREATENS BOTH PUBLIC HEALTH AND MORALITY WHEN PLACED WITHIN PUBLIC VIEW. THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THOSE WHO CONTROL URBAN SPACE AND THE SEXUALISATION OF THE CITY LIES IN THE WAY COMMERCIAL SEX PREMISES OCCUPY, REUSE, AND TRANSFORM THE CONVENTIONAL DOMESTIC SPACE. IN A SIMILAR WAY, SYDNEY’S GAY BATHHOUSES BREACH THE IDEAL OF URBAN ORDER THROUGH SEMI-PUBLIC SITES OF CONGREGATION THAT PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN ALTERNATIVE SOCIALISATION AND SEXUAL EXPLORATION. ALTHOUGH THESE SPACES OF DISOBEDIENCE DO NOT DIRECTLY ATTACK OR CRITICISE CHERISHED BELIEFS OR INSTITUTIONS, THEY CULTIVATE AN AVERSION TO A STANDARDISED POLITICAL IMAGE. THEY PROCEED BY EXPANDING AND EVOLVING WITHOUT BEING DIRECTED TOWARDS A CULMINATING OR CONCRETE POINT. THE PRINCIPLES THAT EXIST WITHIN THESE SPACES DO NOT SEEK TO BE RIGHT BUT EXIST AS AN EXPRESSION OF A CHANGE OF STATE ULTIMATELY CULTIVATING A FEAR OF EXPOSING THE FLAWS IN THE POLITICAL SYSTEM.

SEXUALISATION OF SYDNEY Although appearing divorced from moral considerations, the City of Sydney’s discourses of urban planning have tended to privilege heterosexual, monogamous relationships. This is reflected in the manifestation of urban landscapes which normalise the heterosexual, domestic family, suggesting that commercial sex is something that threatens both public health and morality when placed within public view.

Despite these spaces of disobedience not directly attacking or criticising cherished beliefs or institutions, they cultivate an aversion to a standardised political image. They proceed by expanding and evolving without being directed towards a culminating point. The principles that exist within these spaces do not seek to be right but exist as an expression of a change of state, ultimately cultivating a fear of exposing the flaws in the political system.

T H E E X C L AV E REDEVELOPMENT OF SYDNEY’S CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

EXCLAVE: /noun/ A portion of territory of one state completely surrounded by territory of another or others, as viewed by the home territory.

In 2018, Sydney was in a state of political catastrophe. The citizens of this city were being slowly restrained via policy change and social conditioning into moralistic and political ideologies over which they had no control.

Fragmented conditions were, however, already working against this quiet order. The citizenry who saddled the border of legality, the resistant and the disobedient, were already manipulating the framework. It was the concentration of these separate forces that created this new nation.

The Exclave is a society within and throughout the existing condition. It is coordinated and occupied for and by those in search of total emancipation.

THE ARCHIVE THE ‘RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION’ OF THE EXCLAVE

The Archive acts as a mediator between the laws of the Exclave and its citizens.Through acting as an epicentre

for the Exclave’s values and its people, it reinforces its ideologies.

This is achieved through implementing a repentance program which involves a system of re-interpreting the rules and policies that are set out by the Exclave’s parliament. This allows the institution to create an outreach program that involves all forms of political engagement as it invites the citizens to create their own interpretation of the way in which the law is applied.

Therefore, the Archive it acts as an outreach program to those whose form of political engagement is not as evident as the majority.

This project responds to the Council’s adopted vision for the Sydnenham St. Creative Hub and their intentions for re-envisioning the area as a vibrant public entertainment and employment precinct.

The current perception of public space refers to an open, publicly owned, democratic and accessible space. However, this definition does not manifest to its full potential. Public space in Sydney is a tenuous condition rather than a concrete reality. The confined experiences of the space, as well as laws and barriers, can limit the experience of a place. In order to establish a diversity in people’s experiences in public spaces, especially music venues, these spaces shouldn’t feel defined or controlled. The project therefore critiques the governance over public space by designing a performance space that offers a variety of atmospheric conditions that will give higher levels of autonomy for the users. As this would establish a new identity for Marrickville and fulfil the council’s vision of the area being NORTH WESTERN AXONOMETRIC a 24-hour thriving destination for live music and creative industries.

THREE DWELLINGS 36 MALVINA ST. RYDE

The project involves the redesign of an existing dwelling.

The main aim was to design a house that improves the environmental performance of the site through equally ventilated and illuminated spaces.

This was achieved by replacing the house with three smaller dwellings which would then correspond with the lower occupancy levels of each house. By detaching the house from the neighbouring duplex, multiple houses can then replace the duplex and therefore allow the space to be utilised to its full extent. By doing so, the Southern side of the house/s will then have higher access to solar radiation and ventilation which will hence improve the thermal qualities of the space while also minimising the amount of unused space.
