Concert Promoters’ Group Listening Panel Any artist or ensemble can apply to be included in this guide. We aim to consider listener reports on performances by everyone who makes a request for inclusion and who provides appropriate concert details. The Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists The Award for Young Concert Artists celebrates the best of the UK’s young musical talent, at the same time as providing Making Music member groups with an affordable way of booking top-flight soloists for their 4

concert series. Each year the award is presented to some of the UK’s brightest young classical musicians. Making Music then offers these artists a number of subsidised engagements with member groups, which pay the artist (and the accompanist where appropriate) a set fee of £250 each and claim £150 in subsidy for a solo artist or £250 where an accompanist is required. The award was created in 1961 and has helped to launch the careers of dozens of young musicians including Steven Isserlis, Elizabeth Banks and Craig Ogden. It is made possible by the generosity of the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, which promotes young artists and composers. www.makingmusic.org.uk/ayca

St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition Run in partnership with Making Music, this competition awards an outstanding young ensemble with performance opportunities in London’s prestigious St Martin-in-the-Fields, as well as in other venues around the UK. www.makingmusic.org.uk/smitf

Trumpet recitals Engaging and highly entertaining presentations of some of the most beautiful music from the classical repertoire presented by the trumpet soloist, lecturer and founder of Chaconne Brass, Mark Kesel. Through these performances, Mark explores the world of the trumpet and trumpet playing. In the popular lecture recital The Square on the Hippopotamus (Trumpet & Piano) there are demonstrations and explanations of a huge range of brass instruments, their history and development, from the flugel horn to the piccolo trumpet and the peashooter to the pocket trumpet. The intimate concert performance entitled ‘Soiree Musicale – Baroque Masterpieces for Trumpet’ features enticing 18th Century works for trumpet and strings given in period costume and provides a dramatic insight into the life of the Court musician. New for 2015, ‘The Lyric Trumpet’ a selection of some of the most popular and beautiful melodies from Mozart, Elgar, Handel and Faure, displaying the trumpet in a whole new light.

‘Mark Kesel warmed our Teesside audience on a cold January evening with a superb exhibition of trumpet playing. In journeying from the baroque through Classical to Latin and Jazz styles he demonstrated the versatility of the trumpet family and gave us a unique history lesson at the same time. The Square on the Hippopotamus was decidedly unsquare as an evening’s enlightened entertainment.’ ‘A cocktail of lyrical trumpet playing and delightful anecdotes...beautifully presented’ For bookings contact: Mark Kesel 0118 975 5621 or email markkesel@btinternet.com www.markkesel.co.uk Concerts from £500-£1500

Colleges and conservatoires

Financial support

The main conservatoires offer advanced students for concerts, either as soloists or ensembles.

Another way of reducing costs is by applying to trusts for funding. This is not always easy and may be time consuming but is often worth the effort.

Help Musicians UK

Help Musicians UK is here for musicians throughout their careers. Since 1921, it has helped thousands of musicians establish themselves in the music business, get through a serious crisis, cope with long term difficulties and enjoy retirement. As well as providing advice and guidance, it gives financial and emotional support. It's hard to get started as a musician. Training is time-consuming and expensive and there's intense competition for those all-important opportunities that open up a career. The Help Musicians UK Talent Programme helps to launch hundreds of musicians' careers by offering

targeted financial support and opportunities. Whether they are in the final stages of advanced training or in the early years of a promising career, it invests in talented young artists to help them thrive. Many of the artists featured in this brochure have been helped through music college by Help Musicians UK. To find out more about the artists the charity has supported, visit helpmusicians.org.uk/ourartists. If you are interested in getting in touch with any of our musicians with a view to booking them for a recital or soloist opportunity, email talent@helpmusicians.org.uk
