All the artists are available to Making Music members at fees specially negotiated by the CPG.

Where do the artists in this guide come from?
Concert Promoters’ Group Listening Panel Any artist or ensemble can apply to be included in this guide. We aim to consider listener reports on performances by everyone who makes a request for inclusion and who provides appropriate concert details. In February or March of the following year, the Concert Promoters’ Group reviews all the reports and undertakes the selection process. To apply, email George Wolfe at cpg@makingmusic.org.uk.
Jazz Services ensemble selection Jazz Services is the UK’s charitable organisation for jazz, promoting its growth and development. The jazz ensembles in this brochure are recommended by Jazz Services to Making Music members. www.jazzservices.org.uk
The Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists The Award for Young Concert Artists celebrates the best of the UK’s young musical talent, at the same time as providing Making Music member groups with an affordable way of booking top-flight soloists for their 4
concert series. Each year the award is presented to some of the UK’s brightest young classical musicians. Making Music then offers these artists a number of subsidised engagements with member groups, which pay the artist (and the accompanist where appropriate) a set fee of £250 each and claim £150 in subsidy for a solo artist or £250 where an accompanist is required. The award was created in 1961 and has helped to launch the careers of dozens of young musicians including Steven Isserlis, Elizabeth Banks and Craig Ogden. It is made possible by the generosity of the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, which promotes young artists and composers. www.makingmusic.org.uk/ayca
St Martin’s Chamber Music Competition Run in partnership with Making Music, this competition awards an outstanding young ensemble with performance opportunities in London’s prestigious St Martin-in-the-Fields, as well as in other venues around the UK. www.makingmusic.org.uk/smitf
How to book Concert Promoters’ Group Artists (purple pages) Choose an artist. Speak to them or their contact to make a provisional booking or a definite one if the date and fee are acceptable. Artists do have other commitments, so have a few dates in mind when trying to make a booking. Ask for sample programmes. Some artists have set programmes, others will be open to negotiation in terms of repertoire; check this when you make a preliminary enquiry. Once the booking has been confirmed, send two copies of the contract to the artist(s) stating the date, fee and venue, How to book Young Artists (orange pages) Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists (AYCA) winners: Choose an artist. Contact them to make a booking as with any other artist. In the case of AYCA musicians, however, Making Music members can apply for a subsidy of £150 towards the solo artist’s fixed fee of £250. Where an accompanist is needed there is a further subsidy of £100 towards the accompanist’s £250 fee. The Acacia Duo was formed at the Royal Academy of Music in 2008 by two awardwinning musicians, Samantha Pearce and Heather Wrighton. Formed by four MA students at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2011, the Alauda Quartet was awarded a Junior Fellowship in Chamber Music from the Royal Academy of Music and is a Park Lane Group Artist for 2015, through which it had its Purcell Room debut. The members of the quartet completed their masters at the Hochschule Hannover in 2014 and also studied at IMS Prussia Cove, Accademia Musicale Chigiana Siena and ProQuartet. In 2015 the Alauda Quartet recorded its first CD for Brilliant Classics.
Alauda Quartet likes to explore and broaden its contemporary music repertoire. It particularly enjoys playing John Corigliano (Farewell, 1995, Snapshot circa 1909). Mishka Rushdie Momen studied with Joan Havill and Imogen Cooper at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has also periodically studied with Richard Goode. She was unanimously voted the First Prize Winner of the Dudley International Piano Competition 2014 and won Second Prize at the Cologne International Piano Competition 2014. Taking its name from Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831), the Pleyel Ensemble was formed in 2011 by some of the UK’s finest and most experienced performers who, like its namesake, share a passion for innovative chamber music. Programmes are presented in an entertaining and informal way, exploring works from the Classical period which the ensemble believes have been unjustly neglected, alongside well-known classics, while always looking to include a work by a British composer.

The Roger Beaujolais Quartet features four of the foremost jazz musicians in the UK. They have been playing together as a unit for over 15 years and, individually, the members have played with all the current greats on the UK jazz scene, as well as many visiting Americans. The repertoire is wide and varied, with arrangements that are tight and punchy with plenty of space for improvisation and interplay. Despite a modern free-flowing approach, the quartet has its roots in swing and blues.
The Roger Beaujolais Quartet plays many original compositions. Improvisation (an essential part of the Quartet’s work) is spontaneous composition, which is about as contemporary as you can get! Charlotte is in her final year at the Royal Academy of Music, supported by the Jo Weinberg Award. She recently won the 2015 Royal Over-Seas League Wind, Brass and Percussion category, and has given recitals in venues across the country, such as the Wigmore Hall and Bristol’s Colston Hall. She has played with the CBSO and WNO, and is currently on trial with the Hallé and for Principal Flute of Birmingham Royal Ballet. She is a member of wind quintet Notus Winds, which won the Academy’s Patrons’ Award 2014. In 2016 Charlotte was appointed principal flute of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Savitri Grier is currently studying with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music. She made her Royal Albert Hall debut in 2012 and in 2013 was featured on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, playing the 1666 ‘Serdet’ Stradivarius violin. Winner of the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition 2010, Savitri has attended festivals across Europe and is regularly invited to the IMS Prussia Cove masterclasses and Open Chamber Music. She has performed across the UK and internationally as a recitalist and chamber musician and in 2014 Savitri graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, with First Class Honours.

Apart from this guide there are also other organisations that do the listening for you and recommend artists or provide financial support towards their fees. The Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) chooses some of the best young players around. The fees for artists new to the scheme are often very reasonable and you are guaranteed excellent musicians. www.ycat.co.uk Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition takes place every three years and the prize-winners are worth booking before they become famous (see ‘Competitions’ link). www.wigmore-hall.org.uk The Royal Over-Seas League is worth checking out for the latest prize-winners. www.rosl.org.uk/page. php/43/ROSL-ARTS.html The Live Music Now scheme is worth considering, especially if you are interested in hosting a concert in an unusual venue. The Tillett Trust chooses a small number of artists (usually three soloists or ensembles) and offers a good grant on their normal fees (see ‘Young Artists Platform’ and listings under ‘current/previous winners’). www.thetilletttrust.org.uk The Countess of Munster Musical Trust chooses a number of young artists who are available, often with an accompanist, for only £100 inclusive of travel, although large ensembles are more expensive.
