Kimo’s Faces Fire, But Will Return By Katie McFadden

Just less than two years after opening as a much-welcomed addition to Rockaway’s Restaurant Row, Kimo’s Kitchen was impacted by a fire on Sunday night. While extensive damage may require months of repair, owners Mike Adil and Javed Rambaran say there’s no doubt, Kimo’s will be back. Shortly before 11 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, just about an hour after Mike Adil had closed up for the night, an accidental, electrical fire broke out in the back prep area of the restaurant, out of the reach of the restaurant’s Ansul system, meant to extinguish fires. However, with FDNY Engine 266 and Battalion 47 just two doors down from the restaurant at 92-16 Rockaway Beach Blvd., help quickly arrived. Within 20 minutes, the fire was declared under control, but the damage had been done. Adil, and later Rambaran, arrived during the early morning

hours to survey the damage. With smoke-tinged windows, scorched walls, and melted light fixtures, plus broken windows and water damage that occurred while the fire was extinguished, Rambaran says the restaurant will require a “total rebuild.” However, both Adil and Rambaran are glad that it wasn’t more serious. “It could be worse. When I heard Kimo’s was on fire, I was expecting a whole charred building. It could be better, but it could be worse,” Rambaran said. Most importantly, everyone is safe. Tenants living in the apartment upstairs were able to evacuate the building unharmed, despite there being a lot of smoke. “They have a young baby. If I came here and found that something happened to the family, that would have killed me,” Adil said. “But everyone is ok. We’ll be ok.” There’s no doubt that Adil and Rambaran will repair and rebuild the new Mediterranean

restaurant that became a quick big hit since it opened in June 2019. Upon hearing the news of the fire, locals were eager to offer help by starting an online fundraiser for Kimo’s, but the owners humbly declined. “I wouldn’t want part in that, and neither would Mike,” Rambaran said. “If you’re going to give, give to families in need. We’re ok,” Adil, who has spent several weeks donating food to

those in need throughout the pandemic, said. By Monday morning, Adil said he had already filed a claim with his insurance company so they can hopefully start the process of rebuilding soon. Having overcome another restaurant fire in the past, and quickly rebounding after an exorbitant rent hike forced him out of his original Rockaway restaurant, Paninico, Adil is no stranger to overcoming adversity and he says Kimo’s will be no different. “We are resilient, and we’ll rebuild stronger,” Adil said. Rambaran, who is optimistic that they’ll reopen before January agreed. “Every time something like this happens, we always come back stronger,” Rambaran said. And it helps to have eager customers who are already saying they’ll be at the door waiting for Kimo’s falafel, gyros and more once they reopen. “This is the best community ever,” Adil said. “I love Rockaway.”

46. Part of you is pissed, part of you—should know— you got lucky. So, what is that? Justice by karma? It’s like the Billy Joel concert. Basically, we were doing 46 miles an hour. We weren’t head banging at CBGBs or acting like this was ten-cent beer night in Cleveland. We were just kind of dancing around, trying to get the crowd around us to feel the vodka vibe like we were. We weren’t killing people, we were just evading taxes. This was Oakland, California in the late ‘70s. Which was a pretty hardcore place. But the problem was, the crowd that night was one you’d expect at The Carpenters or Cowsills. No one was pushing you into a mosh pit or stabbing you with a hypodermic needle for laughs. You did run the risk of getting harshly shushed by parents with kids. When Mr. Joel sang it was 9 o’clock on a Saturday, we did the pogo, while the rest of the crowd rocked back and forth like it was a campfire song. Security arrived.

It Was Nine O’Clock On A Saturday Some people will mark the Sandy anniversary next week, I’ll mark the time a buddy and I got kicked out of a Billy Joel concert. There should be a word for getting busted on something that’s a lot less egregious than a previous offence. Something a little less than Caponed. As you know, Al Capone was a bootlegger who killed people, had people killed, and was Public Enemy Number One. They

got him on tax evasion. He got Caponed. I believe my legal eagle friends call that justice by proxy. Everybody knew he was guilty of vicious crimes so getting him one way or the other seemed reasonable. Few could argue, he got what he deserved. In most cases, not everyone knows your crimes or transgressions. Say you were speeding on the Belt, doing 80. You get off on Flatbush Avenue and you get a speeding ticket doing

Page 5 They told us they were moving us closer to a section where we wouldn’t bother people and we’d be with others having the same kind of fun. I believed them. And then I couldn’t believe it when they showed us through a door and we found ourselves, alone, in the parking lot. Like Al Capone, we got what we deserved. We’d gotten away with so many other things during our wayward youth, so it was time for some divine justice, which, all things considered was a pretty light sentence. Although it didn’t end with us being bounced. Unlike Al Capone we didn’t get syphilis, but we did fall asleep on a subway car and ended up in an Oakland railyard. Who knew subways didn’t run all night long? Not us. I got in touch with my buddy to remind him of the anniversary and right off he was stunned. He apparently had more vodka than me that night. Billy Joel? I thought we got kicked out of Simon and Garfunkel.

Proposed Zoning For Resilience City Planning Commission (CPC) Chair Marisa Lago announced the start of public review for Zoning for Coastal Flood Resiliency (ZCFR), newly proposed citywide zoning rules that would result in buildings that are better able to withstand and recover from major disasters and sea level rise and which will also translate to lower flood insurance costs. In a statement Lago said, “As we near its eight-year anniversary, Hurricane Sandy continues to serve as a painful reminder that we must continue to adapt to the ever-so-real threats of climate change. This includes updating our zoning to help New Yorkers build, and rebuild, more resiliently. This new zoning makes floodproofing in New York City’s neighborhoods much easier, whether you’re building a new

home or apartment building, expanding your business, or simply elevating your boiler.” Currently, buildings are restricted by zoning regulations that do not take resiliency into account and thus force New Yorkers to choose between interior space and resiliency improvements. ZCFR will make it easier for buildings to meet or exceed modern resiliency codes without sacrificing their basement, for example, by adding some much-needed zoning flexibility. The proposal will limit construction of new nursing homes in high-risk areas because of their vulnerable residents. Because the proposal is a citywide text amendment, all 59 community boards and all five borough presidents are required to weigh in on the proposal.

***** Summer lovin’? Under the boardwalk? Actor Elliot Gould was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning. He said he was “conceived” in Far Rockaway and grew up in Brooklyn. The late great comedian, George Carlin used to say he was conceived in Curley’s Hotel on Beach 116th Street but grew up in Manhattan. ***** According to a listing on Century 21, the 101 Deli and building are for sale. The deli on 101st Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard has been an iconic mainstay for decades. The listing, for $2.2 million, says the building can be delivered vacant, presumably for developers. Just across the street, a residential building is going up where the Irish Circle and Community House used to be.

***** And that seems like a bargain! A home on Beach 146th Street in Neponsit was recently listed for $6.25 million! ***** Participatory budgeting allows each city councilmember to allocate money to proposals voted on by residents of their district. This has been a popular and effective way to get local, smallish, projects done. Pandemics and budget cuts tend to put a quash on such things and it looks like participatory budgeting will remain on hold for… who knows. ***** Politics, politics, politics. A couple of guest columnists in The New York Times did a study and found that 85 percent of people just follow politics “casually.” Of the 15 percent who follow closely, 45 percent of those share their views on social media. Treats, chalk art, costumes strongly encouraged, earn Community Service hours Children must be accompanied by an adult, please wear a mask and we will social distance. ***** DIY voter integrity idea. Don't know any judges or others running for some position? Write YOUR NAME in and then check with the NYC Board of Elections

a few weeks later and ask to see results. Your name should be listed, If not, why not? ***** Best wishes to Chef Mike Adil as he puts Kimo’s Kitchen back in order after a devastating fire earlier this week. Mike used to run Paninico on 116th Street and then moved to Beach 92nd and RBB just a little more than a year ago. Mike’s a fighter and he’ll get it done. ***** With the Governor strongly discouraging travel to New Jersey and Pennsylvania, we are concerned that more restrictions are just ahead. Barges That Won’t Budge Leave a Sinking Feeling By Katie McFadden

For several years, barges, some containing tall cranes, others, garbage, and some that have been there for so long, that several trees have been growing out of them—have sat seemingly abandoned and neglected in Vernon Basin, a body of water off Beach 75th Street and the bay. Some have asked what’s up with them. No one has more interest in an answer than the new property owner of the lot that has water rights to this area as the barges have become baggage that won’t seem to budge. Growing frustrated with a lack of action over the removal of the barges, the new owners, Smiley’s One LLC, reached out to The Rockaway Times to bring some awareness to their plight. John and Johann Smiley, of Smiley One LLC, say they bought the bayside property, 75-00 Amstel Blvd. on March 10, 2020, however they cannot move forward with any plans, as their water access is blocked by sev-

eral abandoned barges that may potentially create a dangerous situation. Two barges illegally tied to the outskirts of his property are only attached by weathered rope. John Smiley says he fears that they will either sink or break loose and float down the basin, causing damage to property and vessels in surrounding marinas or blocking further water access. Some of the barges have already sunk. Smiley says one barge

directly in front of the property, named “Uncle Leo,” sank at least eight years ago. The barge is blocking water access to his land. “I don’t know how deep it is, but you will wreck your boat if you try to come in here,” Smiley said. The barge also carries a towering crane, which Smiley fears may fall and create further problems. “Those cables are going to rot away and drop that crane into the water. God forbid somebody is there when it hap-

pens,” he said. Smiley is hoping that the barges will be removed before any of these issues arise, but the question of who is responsible for them, has become a headache in itself. According to Smiley, the six barges were owned by a neighboring company called Pile Foundation. After reaching out to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), Smiley was told that the Pile Foundation, originally owned by Anthony Rivara Sr., is now defunct, yet Rivara's son, Anthony Rivara, Jr. allegedly took over, changing the name to A Rivara Contracting LLC. The company has allegedly been awarded a contract for a project on the Macombs Dam Bridge in Manhattan, resulting in them moving two of the barges that were blocking Smiley’s water rights, one in September, and another on October 8. However, the old, neglected barges remain. “They are not claiming Continued on page 14

BARGES THAT WON’T BUDGE Continued from Page 12 any responsibility for the other four barges,” Smiley said. “If you have a stolen car in front of your house, you call 311, they come down, sanitation puts a sticker on it and they tow it away within a few days. What do you do here?” Smiley asked. Smiley says he has reached out to just about everyone for assistance in the matter, but to no avail. “The Coast Guard and the New York State DEC are both aware of the situation with the barges and refuse to do anything about them,” Smiley alleged. “The Coast Guard is claiming if there is no immediate threat or emergency, then it is not in their jurisdiction. The NYS DEC was also notified and they claim they are looking into the matter. The DEC knew about the barge with the crane, when it initially sank close to eight years ago, and did nothing about it.” Smiley says he has also reached out to every local elect-

ed official, with little response. “Rep. Meeks responded and someone was supposed to contact me, but never did. The councilman pushed me off on him. The only person that came out to see what was going on was a woman from Senator Sanders’ office, who took pictures and said she would get back to me, but I haven’t heard anything,” Smiley said. “Nobody cares.” The Rockaway Times reached out to some of the agencies that might have jurisdiction over the matter, asking who Smiley would need to contact to resolve this issue, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the NYS DEC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has previously helped with barge removal projects around New York. A spokesperson from the U.S. Coast Guard responded they would forward our request to a local public affairs team, but we did not receive a response. A representative from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers responded that they forwarded our request to the NYS DEC. “They would be

the agency with the primary jurisdiction in this case,” the Army Corps rep said. As for the DEC? They say they’re on it. “DEC is investigating this situation and working to identify potential enforcement options to address the illegal and dangerous conditions created by abandoned barges in this area of Queens in order to ensure protection of public health and the environment,” a NYS DEC spokesperson said. However, after so many months of waiting, Smiley is losing faith. “DEC says they’re looking into it. They’re not looking into it, they’re lying. I’ve been dealing with them and they don’t get back to me,” Smiley claims. DEC’s alleged slow action isn’t the only bone Smiley has to pick with the agency. Due to DEC regulations on developing waterfront property, Smiley says the agency will only allow him to build a 6,000 square foot building on the 28,000 square foot property. “How is it that they can enforce these rules and guidelines at the exact

The Rockaway Times same site that they are allowing these barges to destroy the ecosystem, wetlands, wildlife and the environment of Jamaica Bay and the Vernon Basin Canal?” Smiley said. Smiley says his two-front battle with the DEC is keeping him from moving forward with any plans for the property. “I’m trying to push for a 10,000 square foot building. It would either be a warehouse or small, individual rentable spots for different stores but I’m not sure what I’m doing here yet. It will depend on how big they’ll let me go. And because of this view, I’d like to build a second-floor restaurant and I can put up to a 110-foot dock in the water, but I can’t access it because of the barges,” he said. Moving forward, will depend on if anyone is willing to help. “We are trying to get someone to care about this situation as much as we do,” Smiley said. “We’d like to see if there is anything we can do together to resolve this issue and clean up the basin and make it safe for the environment and community,” Smiley said.

Rockaway Republican Club Hosts Meet the Candidates Night By Katie McFadden

On Tuesday, October 20, the Rockaway Republican Club invited the community for a meet the candidates night. A small group gathered at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club to meet the republican candidates challenging local democrat leaders in local political races, for positions such as State Senator in District 15, Assembly in District 23, Queens Borough President and Supreme Court Justice for Queens County. Rockaway Republican Club President Jerry Sullivan kicked the night off with the Pledge of Allegiance before introducing each candidate, who each took a few minutes to speak about who they are and what they stand for. First up was John Spataro, running for Supreme Court Justice for Queens County. The lifelong Queens resident, now re-

siding in Broad Channel, spoke about his 20 years of experience in the insurance defense field, acting as a personal injury lawyer on the defense side. Spataro spoke about his community involvement, from serving as president of his civic association, and serving on his parish council and the 100th Precinct Community Council. Despite running on the republican/ conservative ticket, Spataro explained his view on the role of a judge. “A judge is not supposed to tell you what their beliefs are and not to use those beliefs in deciding cases. My philosophy

is that a judge is there to listen to the evidence and apply the law as written to the evidence that’s put before them to render a decision. Sometimes that decision may not be what the judge likes personally but that doesn’t matter. What matters is the law as written,” Spataro said. Joseph Kasper, running for Supreme Court Justice for Queens County as a republican for the second time, expressed similar sentiments. A graduate of St. John’s Law School, the former prosecutor worked in the inspector general’s office for the NYC Dept. of Health and had been in practice as the staff counsel to the Municipal Credit Union. Kasper is familiar with the Rockaway peninsula as he served as a district leader for Assembly District 31 on the eastern end. Having experience in several matters of the law, Kasper believe he would be a “well rounded” candidate

for the job if elected. Peter Hatzipetros, a 33-yearold former defense attorney from Howard Beach, is challenging Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato for her seat. “I am not a politician, which can be a breath of fresh air for a lot of people,” he said. Hatzipetros spoke about his support for the NYPD, FDNY, public school teachers and nurses and what he would do if elected. “Some of the first things I’ll do when I’m your assemblyman is basically knock down a lot of the bills that are being introduced by our current incumbent, Stacey Amato,” he said. Among these, he said, are a bill to lower the voting age to 16, a bill to raise the gambling age to 21 and a bill that would prevent the NYPD from using facial recognition technology during investigations. CLUB HOSTS 14 Continued from Page 15 petros said that he would be a candidate for all. “I want to make it clear that my loyalty is not to a party, it’s to the people. I would never vote in favor of a bill that my community does not want me to support, he said. Tom Sullivan of Breezy Point is challenging longtime State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. for the second time. “On one hand you have an 18-year career politician that was handed down from his father, and on the other hand, you have someone who's worked in the private sector and financial industry for 27 years, he said. Sullivan spoke of his leadership roles, helping clients navigate through financial struggles from the housing crisis of 2008 to the coronavirus pandemic. He spoke of working for a firm at the World Trade Center and having to step up in leadership roles after losing 107 co-workers on September 11, 2001. Sullivan has served in the military for 28 years, having done combat tours in Kuwait, Iraq and

Afghanistan. “I understand a lot of the issues that the government is facing on a global scale, he said. Sullivan also spent 10 years as a restaurant owner until deployments made it impossible to continue. He also served on a board for the Breezy Point Coop through Hurricane Sandy, assisting neighbors through their struggle of losing their homes to flood and fires. “Again, that tested my leadership. I want to take all of that to Albany and fiscal responsibility. Without managing a budget, schools, hospitals. infrastructure, law enforcement, emergency services, won’t get funded and I point those out because those are the core government services that I believe in, he said. Sullivan spokes of the exodus of New Yorkers to states down south, resulting in city-earned pensions being spent in other places. “How is that good for New York? he asked. With a democratic governor, mayor, state senate, assembly, and a majority of democrat city council members at the helm of New York government, Sullivan said it’s time for a

change. “Help us get elected and turn this around, he said. Joann Ariola, challenging City Councilman Donovan Richards for the role of Queens Borough President, explained that she’s a wife, mother, grandmother, a community board member and a civic president who works for a large healthcare network in Queens. “I’ve been very concerned about what is happening in our borough and our city, she said. She spoke of the increase in crime and shootings across Queens, and how she stands against the closing of Rikers Island and defunding of police. She spoke out against homeless shelters, halfway houses and community prisons being placed in communities. “They want to destroy our public safety because without public safety, we are nothing, she said. “The platform of this campaign is public safety and common sense. It is two things that are lacking in this borough, and if we took Donovan Richards and put him at Borough Hall, it would be like putting de Blasio at Borough Hall, she said. “Un-

Page 17 less we make the change at the voting booth, then we will have to move. Our way of life will no longer be what we know it as. People are voting with their feet, they’re going to other states. But I think Queens is worth fighting for and I will fight for it, she said. On the matter of Land Use issues, which Borough Presidents have a say in, Ariola says she will make community input a priority. “You need to be what your constituents need you to be. After a while, I think elected officials begin to think that they know what’s better for you and that’s wrong. You hire us and it’s what you want, what the community wants, she said. Jerry Sullivan reminded everyone that early voting begins this Saturday, October 24. “Get people out to the polls that typically don’t get out and vote. I told my children that I want them to stay in Breezy Point. That’s our roots and we love it down here and the only way to keep the sanity is not to change ourselves, but to change the government, he said.

From Signs to Siller By Katie McFadden

September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten. Especially in Rockaway. On Tuesday, October 20, the ladies behind 2Twins Digital Printing, who created the “We Will Never Forget 9-11-01” lawn signs, presented the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation with a giant check made possible through sales of the sign and extra donations from local residents. Back in August when news swirled that the annual 9/11 Tribute Lights were being canceled and the reading of the names as well, due to Covid concerns, some feared the day was in danger of being forgotten. Soon after, the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation announced that they would step up to the plate and ensure that both traditions continued. Meanwhile, Gina Bruno and Joanne Albarano of 2Twins Printing, as well as Rocka-

way’s Elizabeth Hanna, who had worked with them to sell lawn signs supporting essential workers throughout the coronavirus pandemic, also decided to step up to the plate to make sure that a community that was so deeply impacted by loss on 9/11, would be able to show their support in their own way. The ladies behind 2Twins Printing came up with a design for a sign and agreed to donate some of the proceeds. Hanna came up with the idea of donating to none other than the Siller Foundation.

In a last-minute effort before September 11 this year, over the course of a few days, more than 250 signs were sold from Breezy Point to Rockway and Broad Channel, resulting in $1,550 in funds to be donated. But one Rockaway resident took it a step further. A woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, made a matching donation. On Tuesday, the ladies of 2Twins Printing went to the Stephen Siller Foundation headquarters in Staten Island to present a check for $3,100

to Chairman/CEO Frank Siller and Executive Vice President Matt Mahoney. “They were thrilled. We brought them a giant check and one of the signs and magnets to show them what we did, and their faces dropped. They were overwhelmed that during Covid, we were able to pull something off like this in five days’ time. We told them next year, we’re going to start well in advance and raise even bigger funds,” Bruno said. Due to a scheduling conflict, Hanna was unable to join them, but was overjoyed by the effort to give back to the organization. “I think the Siller Foundation is one of the better organizations out there. They do so much, and it was an amazing thing that they were willing to take over the 9/11 ceremonies because we have so many family members in this community who were upset by the cancellations. For them to step up Continued on page 19

FROM SIGNS TO SILLER Continued from Page 18 and be like nope, we’re doing it, was a really extraordinary thing,” Hanna said. Although she couldn’t be there to present the check, the ladies of 2Twins Printing say the effort would not have been possible without Hanna’s help. “Liz is always giving back and she doesn’t take a dime for it. She does it all out of the goodness of her heart. She’ll travel anywhere to deliver signs, she would come to Staten Island sometimes five days a week to pick them up. She goes above and beyond what anybody would expect or do, and she knocks us off our feet,” Bruno said. When delivering the check, Bruno and Albarano asked that the donation be split up between the Siller Foundation’s various programs. Among some of the things the organization does are help build smart homes for disabled veterans; help pay off mortgages for the families of fallen first

responders; provide mortgage-free homes for surviving spouses of fallen military members and their children, and more. Of Rockaway’s support and willingness to purchase the lawn signs, even with limited time to do so, and a local’s matching donation, the ladies called the effort nothing short of amazing. “I was so happy that so many people in this community were willing to purchase them. It’s phenomenal and it goes to show what a tightknit community we are and that everybody in Rockaway really wants to give back. The fact that some-

one made a matching donation…I don’t have words for it. It was really generous,” Hanna said. The ladies of 2Twins Printing hope to do even more. “It was amazing, but I wish it could’ve been more. I think if we had more time and had known earlier about these ceremonies potentially being cancelled, we would have done this much earlier and made a lot more money for them, but now we know, so next year’s going to be a whole other animal,” Albarano said. 2Twins Printing plans to work much closer with the Siller Foundation going for-

Page 19 ward. In addition to continuing the fundraiser and going bigger next year, there may be a potential partnership in the works for the organization and the Staten Island-based printing company, which launched this January. “We told them that we’ll help with whatever they need and will do whatever we can to keep prices low to help the foundation,” Bruno said. “We’re going to do their first banner for free for their next function and hopefully we’ll do more with them,” Albarano said. They also look forward to working more with Rockaway. “We know there are printers in Rockaway and it is a tightknit community, so the fact that Rockaway works with us is an honor,” Bruno said. “We would do anything for anybody in Rockaway. It’s very special to us. I don’t think we’d be where we were today without Rockaway,” Albarano said. “The people there have boosted our morale very high and we look forward to our next project.”

Discover New York By Lou Pastina

I have written about the potential decline of New York City recently, with great sadness, I might add. But today I write to tell you that news of NYC’s death has been greatly exaggerated. I have been a tourist in our own home city because the city holds great hidden secrets and no one who lives here really both-

ers to look for them. If you were on vacation, especially overseas, you might not think twice about booking a tour of the city. But few residents would ever do so in their own city. I have also written in the past about the off-the-grid tour group NYC Discovery Tours. I have found them to be excellent sources of tours around Manhattan. So, I was delightfully surprised when I received their email saying

A Yankee Doodle Dandy from Yorkville.

that they were open for business again. I immediately contacted them and booked a private tour for members of the family. The price was eminently affordable, and the location was Yorkville, on the very Upper East Side of Manhattan. The gods were smiling on us Saturday, because after two days of torrential rain, a cool

autumn breeze blew in and the Fall sun provided perfect walking weather. I was further surprised to find that our guide was none other than the guide we had on two other tours. I found him to be knowledgeable, respectful, and full of fun facts. In chatting with him during the tour, I came Continued on page 26

LAZER SPEAKS Continued from Page 22 to realize that their business, like many, had been severely impacted by the pandemic, but they were looking to start again. In addition to being a tour guide, his main gig was teaching college courses in one of the boroughs, but even that had been affected by the pandemic. So, we were happy to help get them going again. Yorkville has a history of being a German enclave of Manhattan, but I didn’t know why the German immigrants settled there. Our guide told the harrowing story of the tragic General Slocum ferry that caught fire in the East River and was responsible for the loss of life of over a thousand family members back in 1904. The boat, mostly filled with women and children, left from the lower east side, where the Germans had originally settled. But the loss was so great that almost the entire German community moved uptown because the sadness was tre-

mendous. What was ironic about the move was that the boat actually sunk not far from Yorkville, in an area in the East River just south of the Triboro Bridge, across from where Astoria and Roosevelt Island face each other. The German Church that sponsored the trip eventually merged with a Church uptown in Yorkville, and our guide brought us to the site.

The rest of the tour was not as tragic, as we passed the birthplaces of Lou Gehrig, James Cagney, the Church where Pope Benedict visited and said Mass, the former home of President Barack Obama when he was attending Columbia and many other landmarks. Speaking of the former President, our guide brought us to a very exclusive building, where the Board refused a request from President Obama to live after he left the Presidency! Can you imagine having to deliver that message? One of the things people don’t realize about the upper part of Manhattan is that it is extremely hilly! It must have been extraordinarily beautiful back in the day, with the East River connecting the Long Island Sound to the Atlantic Ocean and multiple streams and rivers running down to it. We also got to visit the outside of Gracie Mansion, and heard how the Gracie family built their home and fortune. The first mayor to live

The Rockaway Times in Gracie Mansion was Mayor LaGuardia, who made a deal with the Museum of the City of New York, the managers of the property back then. Mayor LaGuardia gave them the site they have now on Fifth Avenue. The only mayor not to live there was Mayor Bloomberg. He already had a pretty nice place on the east side!! No comment about the current resident! The tour ended on 2nd Avenue and 91st Street, and the seven of us strolled over to the Milton restaurant and sat out in the street for a few refreshments and dinner. We all agreed that our guide was special, and the tour gave us the feeling that New York will never be defeated. New York Discovery Tours does not have a website, they operate by emailing a newsletter to subscribers. There is no cost to subscribe. They have over 100 tours in NYC and also do tours in three other cities. If you are interested, I will be happy to share the email. New York is still the place to be!

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

The Eyes Have It The human eye is an amazing and complicated organ. To fully understand it requires some understanding of the physics of light, aka optics. For example, when light travels through a lens, the beams of light are bent by the curvature of the lens. The beams of light meet at a point known as the focal point. The focal point is where an image is at its sharpest. An image before or after the focal point will be blurry. When you look at an image through a magnifying glass, you move the glass up and down until the image becomes sharp. When the image is sharp you have found the focal point. The further an object is

from the lens, the longer the distance to the focal point will be. The outer clear part of the eye is the cornea. Light travelling through the cornea, which is a lens, is bent, and then bent again by the eye’s internal lens. A person with perfect vision will have the light beams passing through the eye meet directly at the retina, where cells convert the light to electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. Those signals are then interpreted by the brain as images. A person who is myopic, or nearsighted, has their focal point in front of the retina making distant images blurry. Someone with

They count on you...

hyperopia, or farsightedness, has their focal point behind the eye making close objects blurry. Astigmatism, where the eye is irregularly shaped, makes all objects blurry. Age-related loss of near vision is called presbyopia, a condition that requires reading glasses to make near objects clear. The most common procedure to correct these vision issues is LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. In LASIK, an ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea. A small flap is made in the upper cornea, then the flap is lifted. The surgeon then uses to laser to reshape the deeper cornea by removing precise amounts of tissue. The goal of the procedure varies depending on the condition being corrected. If the person is nearsighted, the goal is to flatten the cornea by removing tissue from the center. If farsightedness is being corrected, the goal is to steepen the cornea by removing tissue from the outer edges. LASIK can also correct astigmatism by reshaping the cornea into a more symmetric, spherical shape. While

Page 29 presbyopia cannot be reversed with LASIK, a procedure called monovision can be performed. This corrects one eye for distance and the other for near. LASIK is a quick procedure (often less than 15 minutes) that requires only numbing drops with no need for general anesthesia, stitches, or bandaging. Complications from LASIK are rare. Some patients experience dryness, glare, light sensitivity, and halos around lights, although these tend to disappear over time in most people. Not everyone will have 20/20 vision after the procedure, but 95% of people are satisfied with its outcome. Some patients will require a touch-up treatment, called an enhancement, to make additional improvements, and others may still need glasses for activities such as reading. Rarely, some may find no vision improvement from the procedure. For more information go to: www.medlineplus.gov/lasereyesurgery.html Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

The Rest I Make Up Maria Irene Fornes was a famous Cuban born playwright. She passed away on October 30, 2018. I was unaware of who she was until someone mentioned, “The Rest I Make Up, referring to a beautiful documentary about her wonderful life. She taught writers how to become unstuck when they experienced writer’s block. She encouraged people to be who they are and go with the flow of their lives, not to be afraid to make mistakes and have courage and believe in themselves. She never cared what the critics wrote. “I am myself. Being an artist is

not a way of earning a living but rather a way of living a life. Maria liked to be called Irene. In the documentary, she is being filmed in the midst of dementia, but she proudly announces, “I am who I am. Imagine a world where we accepted each other for exactly who we are. The clothes we choose to wear are not fashion-driven but rather personal preference. We didn’t plug into social media on a daily basis to check in. We choose to have the freedom to be who we are. Feelings of insecurity are non-existent because we support one another for our uniqueness.

Our goal in life is to be happy and content, living from a place of gratitude for all that we have. What if we decided to live from our heart’s desire and let go of what others think we should be? You don’t have to be an artist to be creative. You just have to be yourself. So often we are revealing only a small part of our precious lives because we are afraid of what someone thinks about us. Life is meant to be fully lived. No regrets. Let go of what you think your life should be. Just live your life and flow effortlessly. Many of us are not able to live fully with the growing concerns of Covid but perhaps we learn to live with more simply. Less traveling, less socialization, less of everything! Be present in the now. Cultivate a new relationship with your inner life. The landscape is vast and expansive. When we work from the inside out we feel grounded and supported. We let go of expectations and judgments being able to connect to something higher than ourselves. I love the title of the documentary, “The Rest I Make Up. Of-

The Rockaway Times ten, we do that in life itself. We have a plan and then we suddenly begin to make it up as we go along. For example, in our yoga classes, we have learned to teach livestream with our students on the iPad screen. Never in a million years would I have thought we would implement this plan, but it was necessary to stay connected to our students. We developed a logical plan to hold classes for our community. We typically flow with the energy in the room but we would learn to adapt with our new teaching platform. It is not a performance but rather a practice of connecting to one another and helping people stay grounded and positive. Learning to teach people to become unstuck in their bodies, minds and spirits. Do not try to change who you are rather embrace your spirit. Laugh often, be kind, be free, be you! It is liberating and authentic. I beg you to live a life worth living. Do not let anyone judge you and tell you how to live your life. You have one crazy life to live. Live it well.

Don’t Be SAD Dear Enchantress, I like to call BS on seasonal affective disorder, and I, grrrrrr, think I have it. It’s all funny, but literally I don’t want to get out of bed. It’s like I’m paralyzed, and I don’t get motivated until like 5 p.m. I’m doing things, but it’s like it takes every ounce of me to do the thing, and I’m cursing in my head the whole time. It could be by myself or with others, I’m bitter. I get this every year, but because of Covid it’s worse than ever. I do not want to take drugs, but it’s not even winter and I’m already suffering. What the hell are we going

to do this winter?!? Oh man. Any advice to help is appreciated. Dear S.A.D. Sally, It’s real, and regardless of a label and or diagnosis. You’re right about wanting to feel better, and different than you are right now. Transitions in general are hard and especially now, and especially Summer to Fall. So! Here are some practical tips, and as far as meds, I would suggest looking up St. John’s wort and Rhodiola Rosea. I take them, and I’m no doctor, these are both herbs.

As tough as it is for me to say this... having a self-care (specific) schedule is so key. Midday around 3 p.m. have a oneto three-song dance break, even if you don’t feel like it. The mind is not your friend here. The natural chemicals in the mind and body need to be shook up, literally. So shaking like crazy for one minute, can change a whole mood, having big gaps of time can be your worst enemy, so make plans to check in with people who love you, watch a movie together, start or join a book club. Making plans and showing up are crucial. Drink tons of water, it may seem simple, and it’s not always easy, especially if you don’t feel like moving. Use a straw, have a pretty glass bottle and entice the inner child in you that wants to whine “leave me alone.” The biggest tip that can always be a constant, is having a gratitude journal and practice. Gratitude can act like medicine for your brain, when feeling bad and sad, the mind can get into victim mode, and

see the world as a mean horrible place. And these days, you can build a whole case study on that. If you choose your focus to be what specifically you’re grateful for, that will be the lens at which you see the world through. Even if you poo poo the practice, do it anyway! Be curious if you can move through winter differently than a) in the past and b) as you are projecting. Join your tribe in the Awkward Enchanted Coven on Facebook, for magically creative women just like you! To submit a question to the Enchantress please email her at support@enchantedembodiment.com

Modern cars are a complex web of computer controlled electronics combined with a heavy-handed helping of E.P.A. regulatory gadgets with a dash of modern cosmetic amenities. Suffice to say that our modern modes of transportation are nothing more than black, white and maybe dark gray shapeless containers, created to get people like us from point A to point B with minimal issues. Unless you intend to ‘break the bank’ on acquiring an ultra-expensive ride, there is a bland taste to most modern-day automobiles. However, those of us who own classic automobiles are not looking for the I.I.H.S top safety pick or the car with auto-pilot, heated seats or the

best cargo space. Rather, most

VINTAGE CAR Continued from Page 36 sets of the classic car hobby, ranging from purists who are always looking to keep their car absolutely stock and factory equipped, to hot-rodders and resto-modders who are always looking to continually upgrade their rides. From the newest technology and tweaks of Detroit’s originals, one thing all car guys and girls universally have in common is the fact that we strive to move away from the mundane driving experience and maintain our own little pieces of moving art. On a spectacular Sunday, October 18 a multitude of Rockaway vintage car enthusiasts convened in the parking lot of the Harbor Optics Family Eye Car Center, to once again, show off their vintage rides and modern muscle cars and talk about their love for all things automobile. While our first meet hosted approximately 25 cars, this meet packed the entire parking lot and the adjacent street parking spaces

with a huge variety of vintage wheels. While we did have a solid group of Chevies, Chryslers and Fords, the beauty of this show was in the diversity of the classic cars that proudly presented themselves at this meet-up. Some of the eyebrow raisers included a 1928 Humpmobile, a 1930 Model Ford T-2 Door Phaeton, a 1959 Ford Edsel 4 Door Ranger, a 1969 ‘ModTop’ Barracuda’s and a 1974 Pontiac GTO. Aside from the usual conviviality between all of the attendees, one of the more notable aspects of this corral was that local parents brought their kids to experience this unique lo-

cal exhibition. In an age where people generally don’t know the number of cylinders that are in their engine, it was wonderful to see parents bring-

Page 37 ing their kids out to see these eye-catching and beautiful vehicles. Hopefully, some of these future wrenchers will be doodling in their marble notebooks their respective versions of a Dodge Charger, Ford Mustang of Chevy Camaro. Once again, we would not have been able to bring this together without the kindness and generosity of Carol and Scott DeNaro of Harbor Optics, the attendance of the N. Y. C. Mopar Club and of course, the classic car enthusiasts of the Rockaways. Hope to see you again soon.

Wrestle Talk CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT By Eric Jayden

Results from the WWE Raw Show on October 19, 2020 from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida: Kevin Owens defeated Aleister Black. AJ Styles defeated Jeff Hardy and Seth Rollins. Mandy Rose/Dana Brooke defeated Natalia/Lana. Angel Garza defeated Andrade. The New Day defeated Dolph Ziggler/Robert Roode. Ricochet defeated Cedric Alexander. Lana won the Dual Brand Women's Battle Royal. The Match of the Night was Kevin Owens vs Aleister Black. This was a hard-fought match, Owens and Black work very well together. This should put Kevin Owens in the WWE Univer-

sal Championship picture and hopefully the WWE realizes this and set the wheels in motion. As for Aleister Black, the WWE needs to continue keeping him strong in future storylines. There comes a moment in a potential young wrestler's life where he/she has to decide what type of character will I be? What type of character do I want to portray, a superhero or an evil villain? What would my character wear and how will my character act? These are all very important questions that go into the making of a Wrestler's Character, which would eventually lead to that wrestler potentially getting booked. When a promotion, especially the Wrestling Booker is looking for new talent, one of the main aspects they look for is the character of the wrestler. Can the promotion

invest into the character, is the character entertaining, can the wrestler portray the character he has created? All very important and potentially career-changing questions and aspects of a wrestler's future. A wrestler’s character can be an extension of his/her personal life and it should be something that they feel comfortable doing. The character should be able to talk to and relate to the viewing audience. If the wrestling character is believable, it should allow the wrestling fan to emerge themselves into the character and suspend disbelief so they can live and enjoy every moment through that character. Whatever path a wrestler follows, he or she must always keep evolving the character because in the end, it's the character that will determine his or her future in the wrestling

business. The question of the week comes from Matt R. in Breezy Point and he said, "I've heard possible rumors of Ronda Rousey returning back to the WWE, is this true?" Good question Matt. The last time we saw a Ronda Rousey was after WrestleMania 35 and there are rumors reportedly that Vince McMahon wants Ronda Rousey to return to the WWE and face off against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 37. There are reports that Ronda Rousey has been training with former Impact Wrestling Star James Storm but there are no indications that she wants to make a return to the WWE at this time. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
