House Approves History is Made in US Prison Reform Bill First Woman & First African
O
n Tuesday, May 22nd the U.S. House of Representatives passed the most substantial prison reform bill to date. H.R. 5682, FIRST STEP, (Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed, Safely Transitioning Every Person Act), is a bipartisan bill sponsored by by Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08)and Republican Congressman Doug Collins (GA-09). It is intended to propel formerly-incarcerated individuals toward success, while improving public safety and reducing recidivism. The bill authorizes $50 million annually for five years for new education, vocational training and mental health programs and passed with a 360-59 bipartisan vote. “Passage of the FIRST STEP Act is a victory for all Americans who believe in justice and the power of redemption,” said Jeffries. “It’s… the end of the beginning on a journey undertaken to eradicate our mass incarceration epidemic in America. Rep. Collins should be commended for his tremendous leadership in this critical effort.” Rep. Collins said: “This afternoon, my colleagues seized the opportunity to help men, women and their communities through federal prison reform. Finally, today’s vote answers a question in the House and asks one of the Senate: ‘Given the chance to accomplish good in this moment, will you act today or regret your inaction tomorrow?’ “ While the House celebrates a sweeping measure, some reform advocates would like the bill to remedy the racial injustice of the school-to-prison pipeline and to curtail Attorney General Jeff Sessions ramping up of the failed war on drugs. They feel that a bill without reform is a paper tiger and real lives remain at stake. Neither is overcrowding and lack of decent health care or educational opportunities behind bars remedied by this bill, which was drafted by Jared Kushner with the approval of the White House. Former Attorney General Eric Holder is critical of the bill and what it portends. “The Trump Administration is pushing a misguided legislative effort that threatens to derail momentum for sentencing reform,” he said.
Highlights of the bill include: Good Time Credit Fix: A provision ensuring incarcerated individuals can earn the 54 days of good time credit yearly that Congress intended, not just the 47 days that BOP currently allows. This retroactively applies to all who have earned credit for good behavior. It has been estimated by BOP and GAO estimates say this will lead to the release of roughly 4,000 prisoners and save $40 million the first fiscal year. The Establishment of a Risk-Reduction System: This is already used at the state level to match inmates to programs

The bill mandates statistical validation and evaluations to ensure it does not result in unwanted racial disparities while addressing concerns about prisoners of color being disproportionately impacted. Requirement to Move People Closer to Home: Visits to loved ones in prison can be extremely burdensome and cost-prohibitive, though contact with family reduces recidivism. The bill mandates that prisoners are placed within 500 driving miles of their families. Focus on Dignity for Women: Pregnancy during incarceration can be harrowing. There are far too few health and safety guarantees and no federal ban on shackling pregnant and post-partum women. This bill implements that ban from the confirmation of pregnancy to three months postpartum and requires BOP to provide free sanitary napkins and tampons.
Requirement for Provisions of IDs: Many formerly incarcerated individuals find themselves without the identification necessary to access essential services like housing or employment services. Accommodating them prior to release will allow a quicker integration back into society and create cost savings for BOP of approximately $19 million. Compassionate Release: The prison population is aging. This bill expands compassionate release through a 10-year requirement from the pilot program created by the Second Chance Act. It reduces the minimum age of eligibility from age 65 to 60, and minimum time served from 75% to 2/3. It also expands the program to all prisons and allows prisoners to seek relief directly from a court, reducing administrative hurdles to release. It moves to the Senate with the support of the White House.

“Ms. Eve, 53, a graduate of Harvard Law School, has worked for former Vice President Joseph R. Biden and Mrs. Clinton when they were in the Senate, and also served as a senior adviser to Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. From 2011 to 2013, she served as Mr. Cuomo’s deputy economic development secretary. “Ms. Eve said she planned to attend the state party’s convention this week, where she will seek the requisite 25 percent of delegate votes to ensure a ballot spot for September’s primary. If unsuccessful, she would secure a spot by collecting signatures from enrolled Democrats across the state. “The level of distrust about government and public service right now is at an alltime high,” she said. “If I don’t get the 25 percent this week, and wind up making my case directly to Democratic voters, that’s really not a bad place to be.”

getting her big political break — she became deputy city attorney in 2003, then state representative in 2006 — the Republican Party was bolstering its stranglehold on Georgia. Republicans not only hold a majority now but also are only one seat away from a supermajority, which means they could pass constitutional amendments without Abrams’ input or a single Democratic vote. For all her trophies, she can’t pass a progressive agenda. “She has almost a zero percent chance,” says Anthony Michael Kreis, who teaches political science at the University of Georgia. Since 2010, Stacey Abrams has led Georgia Democrats as the House Minority Leader. So, what can you actually do as a minority leader in a Republican-dominated state? Abrams has worked across the aisle to “mitigate the harm of what they were offering.” One of her well-it-could-be-worse successes: a $900 million state transportation bill passed last year, which had a handful of negatives in her book, including not enough money for transit and an inefficient increase in taxes. But, hey, she convinced Republicans to throw in $100 million to help fund bus and metro projects. And five years ago, Abrams co-signed a bill with Gov. Alaska Airlines’ first flight piloted by two African-American women earns round of applause ■■

assengers aboard an Alaska Airlines flight earlier this week became part of a landmark trip for the carrier, as it was the first of its flights to be piloted by two African-American women. Captain Tara Wright took to the intercom to make the announcement shortly be-fore takeoff on Sunday, telling passengers they were about to be part of “a pretty interesting piece of Alaska Airlines history.” In a Facebook post shared by Wright, the captain can be seen standing in front of the cockpit alongside First Officer Mallory Cave, addressing the cabin ahead of the flight from San Francisco to Portland, Ore. “Today is a fun day. We have Mother’s Day, and I’m sure there are plenty of mothers on board this morning,” Wright began. She then revealed that Sunday also marked her father’s 80th birthday, telling pas-sengers he was celebrating by “roaming the countryside in Spain this morning.” But Wright’s most exciting news was yet to come. “And finally…you’re sharing a pretty interesting piece of Alaska Airlines history this morning,” she told travelers. You’ll be piloted by two African-American fe-male pilots for the first time in Alaska Airlines history. “You’re making [history] this morning, whether you’re awake or not,” joked Wright, as passengers began to applaud. The two pilots were then asked by a passenger to pose for a picture, and gladly complied. A representative for Alaska Airlines was not immediately available to comment, though the airline did share Wright’s post to its Facebook page. “History in the flying,” the airline captioned the post. The airline also made a ref-erence to Bessie Coleman, the first Black
woman to earn a pilot’s license and pilot a public flight. “What Bessie Coleman started in 1921, we continue here,” the airline wrote. Followers also joined in to congratulate the airline and pilots, though some wondered why the day didn't come sooner. Alaska Airlines’ milestone flight follows a similar milestone for Southwest Airlines in October, during which the airline celebrated its first “unmanned” flight — i.e., one with an all-female crew of pilots and attendants. News of Southwest’s landmark October flight was met with positive responses on

Her job is to make things more palatable for her constituents, whom she relates to from childhood as part of the — as her mom put it — “genteel poor.” The point now: “My job isn’t to win,” Abrams says. “It’s to lose well.” It’s a thankless task at times, always sticking her finger in the dam — and hoping to stave off disaster. Soon after Abrams took over, Republican Redistricting dropped her membership from about 68 members to 56. She later ran races to help steal back four districts, and in 2014, when giddy Republicans flooded statehouses nationwide, she brags that her state was one of the few where Democrats didn’t lose a single seat. For its part, the national party has noticed Abrams’ efforts. In fact, it was excited enough about Georgia’s prospects to have its National Convention in the state in 2014 because it believed the state would soon be purple. But the sweaty optimism of that summer bash quickly faded as Democrats got trounced. And Abrams ran into legal trouble over a “get out the vote” effort that Republicans said turned in fraudulent voter registration papers. (Abrams says only around 50 of the 86,000 forms turned in were ultimately deemed misleading.) The real takeaway, though, is that the change she was so sure was coming never quite did materialize. Today, at a French café in a diverse Atlanta neighborhood, Abrams keeps the faith. She pulls out pie — charts, that is, and three pages of them — plotting minority growth and increased turnout that would lead to a Democratic takeover by at least 2020. Abrams may lead that charge as a candidate atop the ticket; she won’t rule out that option. Right now, though, she’s eyeing the tables around us, pointing out the Asian couple, the white yuppies, the Black diners. “Just look around you,” she says. It’s clear that, for her, seeing the change she wants in the world has never been the issue
The Obamas Are Returning to Public Limelight through a Multi-Year Production Deal with Netflix ■■

t’s been roughly three years since the former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama left the White House. But their post-White House legacies continue growing by the day with the most recent being media moguls. CNN reports that Barack and Michelle Obama have landed a multi-year production deal with Netflix; something that will solidify their influential footprint. The unique pact was announced on Monday, and the first content from the Obamas will appear in 2019 at the earliest, according to sources involved in the deal. Netflix did not specify a timeline. But the company’s announcement of the deal said: “The Obamas will produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.” Some other sources stated that the former president and first lady would be on camera as hosts or moderators, and in other cases, they will stay behind the scenes as producers. Financial terms were not disclosed, but as it looks, the compensation will be quite significant given the 125 million members who have subscribed to the giant streaming service. “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who can promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples and help them share

The Obamas now plan to hire a team of producers to help them produce content for Netflix. This is a first-of-its-kind deal for a former U.S. president. The talks with Netflix were first reported back in March with the New York Times describing the two potential shows. In one, Mr. Obama could moderate conversations on topics that dominated his presidency, and in another show, Mrs.
Obama could talk about matters, like nutrition, that she championed in the White House. In the final days of the Obama Administration, there were reports that Obama was interested in pursuing digital media ventures after he left office. “Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world’s most respected and highly recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities…” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We are proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities.”

Eric Adams Yvette Clarke Tuesday for Governor. A former liberal statehouse leader, she is Georgia’s first Black nominee for Governor. Can a Black woman win in the Deep South? Harlem Democrats hosted a fundraiser for Brooklyn Congresswoman Yvette Clarke at Londel’s Restaurant, which was attended by most of the uptown political grandees. Yvette Clarke has been a member of Congress since 2007. Before that, she was a NYC Councilwoman. Her mom is Una Clarke. She faces a Primary challenger, Adem Bunkeddeko, who is a well-funded upstart with supporters like Vernon Jordan and former NYS Lieutenant Governor Richard Ravitch. Bunkeddeko is a Harvard B-school alum. More than 594 Black women are running for elective office this year, according to the Black Women in Politics organization, which published a recent report, “The Chisholm Effect: Black Women in Politics 2018.” Since 2013, eight Black women have been elected mayor in the 100 most populous U.S. markets in cities like Baltimore, Maryland; Washington, DC; Baton Rouge, La.; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, Georgia; and New Orleans. Black women make up 3.6% of the US Congress. HARLEM gentrification and its discontents: Three African-American women were racially profiled at the Angel of Harlem Bistro, located at 2272 Frederick Douglass Boulevard, in February. The manager accused the women of frequenting the site a week earlier and leaving before paying the bill. The women denied any wrongdoing, admitting that evening was their first time there. Manager pulled out video on his phone to prove that the women were the ones on his screen. After viewing cell phone video, the women said that there was no resemblance between them and the offenders. They told the white manager that “we do not all look alike.” He got testier, snatched menus from them and pushed one of the women outside. Last month, the NY Daily News reported that the three women filed a lawsuit against the establishment. When asked to comment about the incident, owner Anahi Angelone would only say “there

The advanced calculator covers almost
all areas, including Analysis, linear algebra, number theory, 2D and 3D graphs, probability, statistics, arithmetic networks, error correction codes. The software is tailor-made for high school and higher education students. It is free and Mr. Seck, a doctoral student, says it will remain so. Professor Seck currently teaches mathematics at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar. His specialties: coding, cryptology, algebra, and applications.

He is survived by his wife Karen, nine children and close to 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have been finalized. The Viewing will be held on Friday, May 25th from 4 pm to 7 pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 26th at 10 am. Both will be held at Mt. Young Brooklyn Sages Honor Civil Rights Memories of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church

ast Thursday, Mr. Armond Bragg, a Guide for the Tour Ministry of The 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, was effusive in his praise of the "brilliant" young tour goers of the Brooklyn Anti-Violence Rediscovering Lost Values Tour. Mr. Bragg is a long-time member of the church, which is considered a significant landmark in Civil Rights, known for its positioning as a reminder of the violence that rocked the Civil Rights Movement. On Sunday, September 13, 1963, four young girls were killed in an act of terrorism. Members of the Ku Klux Klan planted at least 15 sticks of dynamite attached to a timing device beneath the steps located on the church’s east side. Mr. Bragg, a member of the church for many years, joined the Tour Ministry, a little over a year ago. The tour included Mr. Bragg’s

BlackTech Weekend held talks and workshops on building tech ecosystems, STEAM educator resources, customer acquisition and growth, startup financial management, sales, marketing, resources for investors and more. In addition to hosting workshops and special events,
Etsy held a session sourcing and interviewing talented Black professionals for positions. Etsy is a global e-commerce website that sells unique, handmade, and vintage goods. This year, Brooklyn resident Edith W. Cooper, a former executive vice

The event, sponsored by Amalgamated Bank in partnership with A Greater Good NYC, will take place at 820 Hancock Street, Brooklyn, NY and includes fun games and activities for the kids, an abundance of information from city agencies and local community stakeholders. Students are asking the community at-large to support them by purchasing a new book from its bookstore or bringing

All books donated will go towards helping students build a library at a local shelter in the community. In addition to the festive book drive and the community opening of the bookstore, the students and faculty of PS 5 will host a special garden dedication to local community weekly newspaper Our Time Press. “Our Time Press continues to help our community grow with grace by giving our neighborhood a voice,” stated PS 5 Principal Lena Gates. “What better way to honor their commitment than by planting a rose bush in their honor.” Statistics show that a healthy home environment can have a powerful effect
on a child’s learning. However, access to books is a challenge for students living in the shelter system. As of March 2018, the New York City Department of Homeless Services reported over 23,000 children living in shelters. Over the past few years, School District 16 has shown a large spike in its transient student population (children whose parents do not have a permanent home address). Judges Announced for District 16 STEM May 31st Science Fair at Madiba Prep

udges for the District 16 STEM Science Fair, to take place Thursday, May 31st at Madiba Prep Middle School, 1014 Lafayette Avenue, 2:30 - 6:30pm, have been announced, says Anne-Marie Malcolm, founder of the event, now in its third successful year. The event is open to the public from 4:30 - 6:30pm and includes science projects from nearly every school in the district, including public and charter elementary, middle and high schools. This year’s event is expected to have 65 projects judged by professionals from various fields including the sciences, media, community service, politics and more. Their selection was based on their proven respective interests and shared enthusiasm in motivating Brooklyn youth in the academics and to activate their dreams. Added to the STEM Fair this year is the interactive Bio Bus, where students discover the excitement of hands-on science aboard a Mobile Labs, equipped with a $75,000 microscope and staffed by scientists. lack America is having a very difficult time producing a unified sentiment to express for the Royal Wedding. Arguments are compelling from all sides, making it difficult to commit to one feeling or another. Are we excited that a Black woman has joined the ranks of the Royals? Do we ignore the murderous history of the slave trade that was largely led by the English? Is the Duchess of Sussex worthy of the title "Black Woman," or has she forfeited the right to boast about half her heritage due to her affinity for white men? What has she done for Black people? What will she do for Black people? What CAN she do for Black people? Does she owe us anything at all? Facebook is abuzz with the heated debate that has no resolution in sight! What say ye, Black people?! It may come as a shock to the congregation of Blackness that all of our opinions are equally valid, and do not need to be forced into an umbrella of Group Think. I, for one, sat with my wife and ogled over every moment of the ceremony. We prepared by studying the history of the monarchy and the traditions of the wedding ceremony, where the Duke and Duchess's children will fall into the line of succession, their dating history and any philanthropic platforms they may share in their celebrity. And now that the event has passed, what cannot be denied is the Black American culture that permeated the entire ceremony, the thousand-year English traditions that bent the knee to the Duchess Meghan's demands and the stunning display of love from the bride and groom throughout the courtship! You see, I come from a family and church life that adores pomp and circumstance. This was a pinnacle event for people who appreciate such things and value the history involved. This is my story and reasoning for wanting to bear witness. I am not right or wrong, have pledged no allegiance to Crown and Country, nor have I renounced allegiance to my Blackness. I enjoyed seeing a Black woman happy, assuming a seat amongst the royalty that once captured and enslaved her ancestors. Not out of some great need to make amends or prove that they don't hate Blacks, but out of the pure love for one another, history and traditions be damned. Do I have questions for those that are staunchly against the marriage or its importance? Yes. But I know that their opinions stem from a life of experience and education all their own. We may struggle back and forth for understanding, but we do not have to agree on finite details. The myth of a single Black opinion is not completely our fault, but in instances such as this, we put too much effort into trying to convert Black belief into a single breath. This does a disservice to the African Diaspora from which we all descend. We deserve to feel, think and do as we please, respectfully, without being apologetic or submissive to anyone. If we put less effort into forcing ourselves into a tiny box of belief, we may find energy to find our own love so that we can appreciate the peace it brings to ourselves and everyone around us! Long live ALL of the Kings and Queens struggling to find their royalty in this world. May your self-worth guide you into your eternal happiness!

“The Power of Love”
he Address by The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church in the U.S., delivered at the Wedding Ceremony in Windsor, Great Britain of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. May 18, 2018. And now in the name of our loving, liberating and life-giving God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen. From the Song of Solomon in the Bible: “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it out.” The late Dr Martin Luther King once said, and I quote: “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. For love, love is the only way.” There’s power in love. Don’t underestimate it. Don’t even over-sentimentalize it. There’s power, power in love. If you don’t believe me, think about a time when you first fell in love. The whole world seemed to center around you and your beloved. Oh there’s power, power in love, not just in its romantic forms, but any form, any shape of love. There’s a certain sense in which when you are loved, and you know it, when someone cares for you, and you know it, when you love and you show it, it actually feels right. There’s something right about it. And there’s a reason for it. The reason has to do with the source. We were made by a power of love. And our lives were meant and are meant to be lived in that love. That’s why we are here. Ultimately the source of love is God Himself. The source of all our lives. There’s an old medieval poem that says: “Where true love is found, God himself is there.” The New Testament says it this way: “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; And those who love are born of God and know God. Those who do not love do not know God.” Why? For God is love. There’s power in love. There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There’s power in love to show us the way to live. “Set me as a seal on your heart, a seal on your arm, for love it is as strong as death.” But love is not only about a young couple. No, the power of love is demonstrated
by the fact that we’re all here. Two young people fell in love and we all showed up. But it’s not for and about a young couple who we rejoice with. It’s more than that. Jesus of Nazareth on one occasion was asked by a lawyer to sum up the essence of the teachings of Moses and he went back and reached back into the Hebrew scriptures to Deuteronomy and Leviticus and he said. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Then in Matthew’s version he added, he said, on these two - love of God and love of neighbor hang all the law, all the prophets, everything that Moses wrote, everything in the holy prophets, everything in the scriptures, everything that God has been trying to tell the world – love God, love your neighbor. And while you’re at it, love yourself. You know, someone once said that Jesus began the most revolutionary movement in all of human history. A movement grounded in the unconditional love of God for the world and a movement mandating people to live that love and in so doing to change not only their lives but the very life of the world itself. I am talking about power, real power, power to change the world. If you don’t believe me, well, there were some old slaves in America’s antebellum south who explained the dynamic power of love and why it has the power to transform. They explained it this way, they sang a spiritual, even in the midst of their captivity. It’s one that says “There is a balm in Gilead”. A healing balm. Something that can make this right. “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.” One of the stanzas explains why, “If you cannot preach like Peter, and you cannot pray like Paul, you just tell the love

of Jesus, how he died to save us all.” Oh that’s the balm in Gilead. This way of love it is the way of life. They got it. He died to save us all. He didn’t die for anything he could get out of it. Jesus did not get an honorary doctorate for dying. He didn’t get anything out of it. He gave up his life, he sacrificed his life for the good of others, for the good of the other, for the well-being of the world, for us. That’s what love is. Love is not selfish and self-centered. Love can be sacrificial, and in so doing, becomes redemptive. And that way of unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive love changes lives. And it can change this world. If you don’t believe me, just stop and think and imagine. Think and imagine. Well. Think and imagine a world where love is the way. Imagine our homes and families when love is the way. Imagine neighborhoods and communities where love is the way. Imagine governments and nations where love is the way. Imagine business and commerce when love is the way. Imagine this tired old world when love is the way, when love is the way, unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive, when love is the way, then no child will go to bed hungry in this world ever again when love is the way. We will let justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an ever-flowing brook. When love is the way poverty will become history. When love is the way the earth will be a sanctuary. When love is the way we will lay down our swords and shields down by the river side to study war no more. When love is the way, there’s plenty good room, plenty good room for all of God’s children. Because when love is the way we actually treat each other, well, like we are actually family. When love is the way we know that God is the source of us all and we are brothers and sisters, children of God. My brothers and sisters, that’s a new heaven, a new earth, a new world, a new human family. And let me tell you something, old Solomon was right in the Old Testament, that’s a fire. Teilhard de Chardin ... and with this I’ll sit down. We’ve gotta get y’all married. French Jesuit Teilhard de Chardin was arguably one of the great minds, great spirits of the twentieth century. Jesuit, Roman catholic priest, scientist, a scholar, a mystic. In some of his writings he said from his scientific background as well as his theological one, in some of his writings he said, as others have, that the discovery or invention or harnessing of fire was one of the great scientific and technological discoveries in all of human history. Nod your head if you did, I’m guessing - I know there were some carriages. But those of us who came in cars, fire, the controlled, harnessed fire made that possible. I know that the Bible says, and I
believe it, that Jesus walked on the water. But I have to tell you that I didn’t walk across the Atlantic Ocean to get here. Controlled fire in that plane got me here. Fire makes it possible for us to text and tweet and email and Instagram and Facebook and socially be dysfunctional with each other. Fire makes all of that possible. Fire made it possible to heat, warm environments and thereby made human migration around the world a possibility, even into colder climates. Fire made it possible, there was no
ever harnesses the energy of fire again, if humanity ever captures the energy of love, it will be the second time in history that we have discovered fire. Dr. King was right. “We must discover love the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world.” My brother, my sister, God love you. God bless you. And may God hold us all in those almighty hands of love.
