ֹ ׁ ֹ ׁ ׁ זֶ ה יִ ּ ְתנ ּו ָּכל ָהע ֵבר ַעל ַה ּ ְפ ֻק ִדים ַמ ֲח ִצית ַה ּ ֶש ֶקל ְ ּב ֶש ֶקל ַה ּק ֶדש וגו’ ָל ֵתת ֶאת ּ ְתר ּו ַמת ה’ ְלכַ ּ ֵפר ֹ ׁ ) יג–טו, (ל:ַעל נַ ְפש ֵתיכֶ ם This is what they shall give, all who are counted: half a shekel of a holy shekel… to give Hashem’s donation, to atone for their souls. (30:13-15) “This is what they shall give” – Hakadosh Baruch Hu showed Moshe a sort of coin of fire, and its weight was half a shekel, and said to him, “They shall give one like this.” (Rashi ad loc) It is a wondrous thing, as the Commentators have already pointed out, that a mere half a shekel can atone for the soul. They explain it literally. Even
if Heaven has decreed that a person should die, the small sum of half a shekel given by him as tzedakah has the power to affect atonement and save his life.
