Music is a major part of our First Fridays events, and we realize that behind the artists are amazing track mixers and beat masters. The event will be hosted by Harlem’s own Dhalimu from Dhali’s Closet .With our extended hours, explore our pop-up exhibition, Black Power 50, as DJ Sylk spins unforgettable tunes created by the top producers of all time in our Langston Hughes Lobby and American Negro Theatre. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the discovery of the African Burial Ground (ABG), Columbia sociologist Alondra Nelson, Howard University biologist Fatimah Jackson, City University of New York anthropologist Leith Mullings, Connecticut State University anthropologist Warren Perry, and Michael

Blakey, anthropologist and a National Endowment for the Humanities professor at the College of William & Mary, where he directs the Institute for Historical Biology, will discuss the significance of the ABG, and the new research in ethnohistory, anthropology, genetic ancestry testing, and archeology that help provide a better understanding of the lives of enslaved men, women, and children. Nov 10 6:30pm Black Power 50 Films: “¡Palante, Siempre Palante!” In the midst of the Black Power Movement, liberation was sought by communities across the globe. In the U.S., Puerto Rican and Latino/a communities fought for economic, racial and social justice. The Young Lords emerged as a powerful voice for the independence of Puerto Rico, empowerment and improved living conditions in America. ¡Palante, Siempre Palante!, directed by Iris Morales, a grassroots activist who was the first woman to join the East Harlem branch of the Young Lords, features interviews with activists. After the screening, Morales will join three former Young Lords-Martha Arguello, Carlos Aponte, and Carlos Rovira --for a talkback with Johanna Fernandez, PhD, professor of History, Department

Vintage Black Glamour: Gentlemen’s Quarters is the anticipated follow-up to Nichelle Gainer’s Vintage Black Glamour, a popular collection of photographs and profiles of world-renowned black stars. Gentlemen’s Quarters contains biographies and images of lesser-known but hugely influential artists, alongside stars such as Duke Ellington and Muhammed Ali. Men like pioneering photographer Charles ‘Teenie’ Harris and fashion designer Willi Smith are among those profiled. Gainer will be in conversation with Emil Wilbekin when she hosts this New York book launch conversation and signing at the Schomburg. Wilbekin is a Creative and Strategic Media, Marketing and Branding Professional and On-Air TV personality living in New York City.
