I recently visited the National Museum for African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C. and I felt so proud that our story has been captured for all the world to see and for our youth to be inspired.

The thought of someone like Donald Trump having the possibility of becoming President in my lifetime is truly scary. We have come so far and I see votes for Donald Trump as an indication of how many bigots, chauvinists, and sexist people we have in this country. he National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and Howard University, announced the results of the 2016 Howard University/NNPA National Black Voter Poll. Nearly 90 percent of Black voters plan to cast ballots for Hillary Clinton and two percent plan to vote for Donald Trump, according to the poll.

The HU/NNPA national polling center, located on the campus of Howard University, made over 21,200 telephone calls across the United States from October 23, 2016 to October 30, 2016.

The HU/NNPA National Black Voter Poll revealed that the top issues influencing Black voters included the economy and jobs, income inequality, race and race relations, college affordability and high quality education in pre-kindergarten.

Howard University faculty and students from multiple departments and disciplines including economics, political science, sociology, communications and media studies, were represented in the coordinated effort.

“This multi-disciplinary team has drawn on its expertise to develop a comprehensive

polling instrument designed to assess the opinions of Black Americans on the presidential candidates and other important issues facing the Black community and the nation,” said Terri Adams-Fuller, the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University.

Highlights from the HU/ NNPA National Black Voter Poll: • 94% of those polled plan to vote in the upcoming election Of those who plan to vote: • 89.8% for Clinton • 2% for Trump • 0% for Johnson • 0% for Stein • 7.2% for another candidate The respondents also identified their party affiliations: • 82 % Identify as Democrat • 2% Identify as Republican • 9% Identify as Independent (67% normally vote for Democrats, 5% normally vote Republican, 28% normally don’t vote for either major party) • 7% Identify as Other “As a result of this poll, candidates and those who will

be successful in occupying the White House and controlling Congress will know the prioritized issues and nuanced concerns of the Black community,” said Rubin Patterson, the chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

“We hope that these findings will shape their policy and legislative agendas starting next year.”

Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., the president and CEO of the NNPA said that the NNPA-HU National Black Voter Poll is timely and very significant for Black America.

“The fact that 94 percent of Black Americans polled indicated that they intend to vote on November 8, or have already voted during the early voting period is indicative of the importance of the right to vote in Black America at a time when there has been inaccurate speculation about how Blacks in United States view the 2016 national elections,” said Chavis.

Chavis added: “This poll provides clarity on the national issues and the candidates for President of the United States.

The poll verifies that Hillary Clinton is the overwhelming favorite of Black American

voters over Donald Trump.”

Mother Africa: My Home celebrates the hustle, vitality and energetic atmosphere of everyday life in a South African

township. A diverse cast of 26 acrobats, musicians and dancers from different countries throughout the African continent transform the New Victory stage into a bustling marketplace filled with breathtaking feats, exuberant afro-beats and a swirl of colorful bazin and kitenge fabrics. The rare Icarian Games from Ethiopia--in which foot jugglers toss fellow cast mates into the air--appear alongside a body-bending contortionist, an African Gumboot dance and more than a dozen awe-inspiring acts. Throughout the show, a live band keeps the party going with every strike of the congas and strum of the

kora, showcasing Africa’s expressive dance culture.

Rich in rhythm and robust in song, Mother Africa has earned rave reviews around the globe and has performed for millions worldwide since the company’s debut in 2006. A portion of the company’s profits benefit charities in Khayelitsha, including organizations engaging HIV-positive children with circus arts.

The performers of Mother Africa received their training at director Winston Ruddle’s African Acrobatic Academy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Young people who exhibit significant talent are invited to study a

VICTORIA MORALES Born in 1961, Victoria Morales is a product of Spanish Harlem, also known as Dz El Barrio.

Dz began drawing at the age of nine and was introduced to oil painting at eighteen. The vibrant colors and rhythms that surrounded her growing up became an integral part of her artistic vision, an approach that she further refined as a student at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York City.

HUBERT WILLIAMS As an artist/photographer, I have a passion for creating extremely unique images that will magnify any space in time. Since 1978, I’ve captured images that capture the viewer’s imagination. Spontaneity and perfect timing are the key ingredients for the timeless image... My passion for photography has taken me on an endless journey. It ignites my love for Jazz, theater and opera. I try to capture the spirit and expression in a moment that will last and last....

BYRON MCCRAY “My artwork submissions are intended to capture the energy of the trains that take so many people to Harlem, USA. My artistic goal is to share the story of the African Diaspora.

Through combination of acrylic paint, layers of collage, and found objects, I discover more about my history and the origins of my community.”

PAUL DEO Spinning inspirational stories visually allows for an inclusive experience. This allows everyone to access the power of imagination. I create art that evokes the collective in order to establish a space for communal dialogue.

Flu season is here; Get your flu shot today

on’t look now, but Mother Nature has changed the seasons.

Though fall is a wonderful time of year, it signals something less pleasant – flu season.

Flu, or influenza, is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalizations, severe health complications and even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu-related deaths during a given season can number as high as 49,000. Also, flu has a significant impact on the economy. A new study from Health Affairs reports that flu costs in the United States last year for adults reached $5.8 billion in medical visits, medication and lost productivity.

So what can you do?

The best way to reduce your chances of getting the flu is to get a flu shot.

According to the CDC, everyone who is at least 6 months old should get a flu vaccine. Getting vaccinated is especially important for people who have certain medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or chronic lung disease; and for pregnant women, young children and people 65 and older.

Influenza does not discriminate against age or health habits. Just because you’re young or don’t typically get sick doesn’t mean you can’t catch the flu. Since a person can be contagious before symptoms develop, you can catch the flu from

ach year, parents send their sons and daughters off to college with high hopes that in four years – give or take – they will earn a degree and embark on successful ca-

reers.

But while moms and dads may fret most about grades and study habits, they can give their offspring a real boost if they also insist the students carry

some of the financial burden for college, says Matt Stewart, an entrepreneur and co-founder of College Works Painting (www. collegeworks.com/about), an internship program that pro-

vides practical business experience for college students.

That means getting a job – either during the school year or over the summer break, or both.

“College students are much more invested in the experience if they have to help pay for college, rather than have mom and dad take care of everything for them,” Stewart says. “There’s a natural tendency to work a little harder on classwork when at least a part of the tuition or dorm room costs come out of your own pocket.”

But beyond that personal-responsibility aspect, it’s worth noting that businesses are seeking job candidates with real-world work experience.

“Those on-the-job lessons are invaluable,” Stewart says.

For example, interns with College Works Painting operate their own house-painting business with hands-on guidance from mentors.

The benefits for students of working their way through college include: • A regular paycheck. The rising cost of higher education has put paying the full price of college out of reach for many parents, and scholarships and grants often provide only a small percentage of the costs. The more students can pay themselves, the lower their student-loan debt will be when they enter the workforce.

• Practical experience.

Nothing prepares you for work like work, Stewart says.

A classroom can train students on certain skills necessary for their career choice, but onthe-job experience is just as valuable. Even if a part-time

job is unrelated to career aspirations, a student might learn such skills as collaboration, time management and customer relations.

• Resume enhancement.

One of the weaknesses recent college graduates sometimes have is their resumes can be skimpy. A few summer jobs can help tremendously, Stewart says, giving managers who might consider hiring you more confidence that you have experience beyond listening to professorial lectures and cramming for final exams.

• Additional references.

Hiring managers want to talk with people who know your work habits, and while it’s nice that a favorite professor or a high school football coach is willing to say good things, it’s even better to have references who can discuss relevant job skills.

“Having any job can be beneficial, but if you can you should try to land an especially challenging job or internship,” Stewart says. “When you graduate, you’re going to face stiff competition in the job market.

The more you’ve been able to stretch yourself past your comfort zone and develop new skills, the greater the odds are that you’ll be the one picked out of all the applications that come pouring in.”

H

ippocrates has long been considered the “Father of Medicine.” The Hippocratic Oath is an ethical code that each new physician pledges to uphold in tribute to the spirit of the founding father. Scientific research now shows that the origin of the recorded history of medicine can be dated over one thousand years before Hippocrates was born.

There are about eight major ancient medical papyri that show the scientific approach to medicine in ancient Egypt. The Edwin Smith papyrus for example entails details focused on

surgery, a medical practice that early European religious political laws considered a crime.

The discovery of these ancient Egyptian texts written on papyrus gave details on medical knowledge in the areas such as surgery, dentistry, gynecological conditions and migraines.

The first recorded founder of Egyptian medicine was Imhotep, also known as the Prince of Peace.

Imhotep was not only considered the father of medicine but he was also an astrologer and chief Vizier to the Pharaoh. Imhotep was also the father of Egyptian architecture. He built Egypt’s first pyramid.

The Djoser Step Pyramid in Saqqara Egypt still stands and is considered to be the world’s first monumental stone.

An illustration taken from the Physician’s Tomb that is also in Saqqara shows practitioners using the therapeutic benefits of foot and hand manipulation; (what we now call reflexology or chunsoo Ki treatments). This was more than 4,000 years ago. Ann Gillanders has a picture of this illustration in her book “The Joy of Reflexology.”

The practitioners were dark skin with short wooly textured hair.

Imhotep used medicine from plants and herbs,

practiced meditation, energy healing techniques, and diagnosed and treated over 200 diseases 2,000 years before Hippocrates was born. The early Greek temples dedicated to Imhotep, whom they called “Imouthes,” were centers of medical teachings. History also tells us that the Third Dynasty and the court of Pharaoh Zoser were Nubian decedents from the Kingdom of Kush; this was the time of Imhotep, a high priest and the advisor to the Pharaoh.

The true father of medicine was a “Black Man,” yet when we think of brilliant medical professionals many do not see a person of African descent, although there are many. There is a

strange and sad story about a leading African-American surgeon who was rushed to a southern hospital’s emergency room in the mid1950s due to a heart attack.

When word that this famous doctor was in the hospital’s emergency room, the operating room was set up with the hospital’s best doctors ready to go.

Two attendants were sent to bring this famous doctor to the operating room; they found two patients; one a well-dressed Black man and a white homeless drunk. Guess who they brought up to the operating room first? As we move into this current time of change, it is important to understand many of the things we have been programed to believe

about ourselves and others are illusionary.

Holistic and natural wellness options like energy treatments and movement exercises are now becoming accepted options in many of today’s medical communities, yet the true father of medicine and inspiration to Hippocrates understood their benefits thousands of years ago.

I wonder where the world would be today if the advanced science and technology practiced during the time of Imhotep could have proceeded and advanced uninterrupted. I have no doubt that there is a reason for this cycle of re-learning during this current stage of the human evolutionary journey.

The concert, titled “A Rebuilding of Christ’s House” brought many gospel artists and groups to the celebration.

“Tales of the Talented Tenth: Bessie Stringfield”

I

REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor adult, she traveled across the U.S. eight times. She did “Penny Tours” by dropping a coin on a map for her next destination. Married six times, she was more in love with the road than she was with any man but there was one thing that baffled Bessie: the South.

Unused to Jim Crow laws, Bessie learned to take care of herself with speed and tricky maneuvers on her bike. Those fancy moves helped her get jobs with sideshows where she became The Motorcycle Queen of Miami; she entered races, and got work with a courier service during World War II. And

when that was over, she traveled around the world before settling down to teach.

“Man,” says author Joel Christian Gill, “she was something!” And he’s right: “Tales of the Talented Tenth: Bessie Stringfield” is a pretty amazing story.

Set at a time when women (Black women in particular) had few rights, this book tells the true tale of a pioneer on two wheels.

What makes it so appealing is that it’s entirely illustrated and formatted like comic books of yore, which enhances the story and its teen-friendliness.

Young readers get a great sense

of Stringfield’s importance in history and if they want more information, Gill helpfully offers websites and further information at the end of this book.

This is a great biography for readers 12 and up, and could be a good gift for a Motorcycle Mama of a higher age. For them, or for anyone who wants to learn about an interesting, little-known story, “Tales of the Talented Tenth: Bessie Smith” is the book to see.

So many things to see, so many places to visit. You can find pictures of those spots, but photos aren’t enough. You want more, and you aim to touch as much of the world as you can. It’s a common desire and, as in “Tales of the Talented Tenth: Bessie Stringfield” by Joel Christian Gill, you might make history while you’re doing it.

Bessie Stringfield didn’t remember much of her childhood.

She did, however, recall how her father saved to bring Bessie and her mother to America. They boarded a big ship for the journey from Jamaica to Massachusetts and for the whole trip, Bessie’s mother was ill. Once they reached Boston, her mother died; overwhelmed, Bessie’s father abandoned his little girl.

Taken to an orphanage, Bessie was cared for by kindly nuns but she longed for a family of her own. She was still a young girl when she was adopted by a white lady who gave her a good home and a fine education.

Bessie grew to be a proper young lady but she had one desire that was unusual for girls then: she wanted a motorcycle. She’d seen boys on bikes and she wanted to be “free and happy” like them.

On her birthday one year, her mother had a surprise for her…

the same time frame.” This is relevant since according to the Department of Health and Human Services, 5% of the overall population accounted for 50% of healthcare spending annually in 2010.

Physical comfort: choose a comfortable space where your environment is peaceful and undisturbed – even if just for 5 or 10 minutes.

Breath Control: Basically involves deepening the breath as you focus your mind. It is important to be

consistent with your breath, meaning whether you breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth or the reverse or both inhale/ exhale through your nose or mouth. Decide on which and keep it consistent. Also, try to stick to a regular pattern or rhythm of breathing (Example: breathe in for count of 6, hold for count of 2, and breathe out for count of 8).

Consistency: Finally, try to practice meditating at a consistent time and place each day for a specified amount of time in order to establish a good, healthy habit that will serve you well for a lifetime.
