School Committee winds down superintendent Q&A sessions Finalist interviews slated for Saturday By Christopher Roberson

arents, teachers and administrators had the opportunity to hear from Paul Toner, a senior director at Teach Plus, and Thomas Flanagan, chief academic officer of the Providence Public Schools, just days before all four superintendent candidates are interviewed by the School Committee. During his December 5 question and answer session, Toner spoke about the importance of fusing vocational classes with traditional high school curriculum. “I’ve witnessed kids who are juniors and seniors in high school who would tell me they wanted to be engineers and architects,” he said. “When I would look at their transcripts, they hadn’t even taken Algebra I yet.” In addition, Toner said that earlier in the day he met a number of Everett High School students who, on average, work 30 hours per week in addition to going to school. He
cited merit in their decisions to take on afterschool jobs as it teaches them about taxes, paychecks and personal finance. Toner also spoke about the vital role of collaboration in a school district. “Any lasting change is something that’s built together,” he said. “The only way it’s going to work is if we build a vision together.” Regarding employee turnover, Toner said he would initiate a deep dive to uncover the real reasons why teachers choose to leave Everett. “I’m a solutions-oriented person; I’d really want to dig into that,” he said. Toner said that in addition to conducting climate surveys and exit interviews, he would also develop mentorship and orientation programs for new teachers. In addition, he said he would want principals to remain autonomous regarding curriculum implementation and staffing decisions. “Principals have
