5770: May You Be Written As the pages of the book recording 5769 closes, completion of this past problematic year, punctured (not a mistake) by difficulty and distress, angst and adjudication, scandal and sadness, is considered by many to be a relief. uring this troubled year, we as a community, as a people collectively lived through personal and public tragedies. In New Jersey, a young child, virtually an infant lost his life under the wheels of a car. We quoted the words of a local rabbi who memorialized him as “a sacrifice for all of us.” As an international community of Jews, we close the year mourning, weeping with Rona Ramon, the widow of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, who now faces life without her first born, Assaf. The young IDF pilot dedicated his life to the protection of the State of Israel - and of each of us. His sacrifice takes from all; the example of his life and deeds shines as stars in the heavens. G-d saved Isaac in the wilderness. Who can understand the death of these children – of any child? Who can fathom the workings of G-d? Ours are souls on loan. Each of us, someday, must return the principal to its source. No one can predict the “terms” of this loan. For all the days that are ours, we have an obligation, an opportunity, to enhance the value of the base, adding “interest” that makes our earth and the time we spend upon it, better, more valued and more valuable to those with whom we share humanity. As we recite the prayers of s’lihot, day by day coming ever closer to G-d, we look to quintessential new beginnings. We have an opportunity to participate in tikun olam, not only of the physical world, but of the world of the neshamah, the soul. As Rosh Hashanah draws near, we at The Jewish Voice quote the words of a dear one who begins 5770 as a new resident of Israel. “May you love and be loved. May you have the time and good health to enjoy and appreciate the important people in your life.” We add wishes each of us may follow the direction of the great Rabbi Hillel whose simple summary of Tanach “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” May we each of us, and all of the People Israel, find shalom bayit in each of our worldly homes, and add to the goodness of the world in which we live.
