Finance Committee tweaks 2019 budget proposal By Barbara Taormina Nobody came to the Finance Committee’s public hearing this week to speak either in favor or against the proposed 2019 city budget, but City Councillors have asked Mayor Gary Christenson for a few changes. “It’s disappointing that no one showed up to speak, said Finance Committee Chairman Paul Condon, who has been leading an in-depth review of a nearly $178 million budget for the past several weeks. But with a 3.3 percent increase slated for the School Department and an overall 1 percent decrease in spending from last year, there hasn’t been much controversy with the numbers that have been proposed. Committee members were
taken off guard by an eleventhhour request from City Clerk Tom Brennan for $120,000 for new voting machine calculators. “The machines we have now are 21 years old, and replacement parts are no longer available, said Brennan, who is concerned that the equipment could fail during an election. The city has 17 voting machine calculators, one for each of Malden’s eight precincts, and one back-up machine in case of problems. “It’s prudent that you bring this up; I’m just surprised it’s coming at this point in the budget cycle, said Ward 5 Councillor Barbara Murphy. Brennan said the machines should make it through this year, but he worried about

he good news is that students feel safe in Malden schools, but the unexpected update is that they were a little surprised that someone took time to ask. Those were the reactions of several teens who turned out for a panel discussion on gun violence, school safety and civic engagement last week at the Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC). Organized by the YWCA’s peer Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge (TASK) program and cohosted by MTEC, the discussion covered a range of related topics, such as gun control, violenceprevention and the power of teens stepping up and working for change. “It’s interesting that the community actually cared enough about this to set this up and try to get teens involved, said Josh, a Malden High sophomore. Anthony, a MHS junior, said the panel touched on a lot of issues going around school, and he was glad to see an open discussion that involved students.
YWCA Teen Services Coordinator Chris Murphy said the Peer TASK program received a mini-grant from the United Way to keep a community conversation on school violence, safety and civic engagement moving forward. The TASK program focuses on helping young women develop leadership skills to address community problems and to promote cooperation and change. Recent peer TASK team projects include public awareness
