HOUR OF CODE | FROM PAGE 2 created yet,” she said. However, the demand for computer science professionals continues to grow. According to Code.org, there are 19,479 computer science jobs available in Massachusetts that pay an average of $103,278 per year – $41,168 more than the state’s average salary in other professions. Yet, there are only 1,953 individuals in the Commonwealth who hold degrees in computer science. In addition, Perkins said there is currently one computer science section at the high school. She said that during the last course selection, 90 students submitted requests
to take computer science and 24 of them were chosen. Sophomore Nicholas Orlando, who volunteered to assist at Summer Street, said he was one of those 90 students. “I tried to get into it this year and I couldn’t,” he said. “The foundation is computer science; it’s in very high demand.” Code.org launched the first Hour of Code in 2013. Since then the event has been held during Computer Science Education Week, which runs from Dec. 3-9. The last day of Computer Science Week honors the birthday of the late Grace Hopper, a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and one of the nation’s first computer programmers.
Members of the Middlesex County Deputy Sheriffs Association prepare to serve residents at the Lynnfield Housing Authority’s Colonial Gardens holiday luncheon. MarketStreet announces return of New Year’s Eve Family Block Party
F
rom holiday shopping to ice skating to New Year’s Eve festivities, MarketStreet Lynnfield is the best place to celebrate the season in December. The outdoor shopping destination announces that its beloved New Year’s Eve Family Block Party will return – this year as a 60s theme party that invites the entire family to groove into the New Year. Packed with music, entertainment and giveaways, the MarketStreet New Year’s Eve Family Block Party is free and open to the public. It will be held directly outside the MarketStreet Rink on Dec. 31 from 5-7 p.m. Giving families a way to enjoy a Christmas Break outdoors, the rink will also offer extended hours. “Between our shops, restaurants, skating rink and New Year’s Eve Family Block Party, MarketStreet Lynnfield could not be a better place to find that holiday cheer and to spend the last weeks of 2018,” said General Manager Lauren Taylor. “We are so proud to give families the opportunity to celebrate the season together and to host events that bring the North Shore community together.” The M ar ketStreet New Year’s Eve Family Block Party is one of the North Shore’s most popular events. To create a 60s theme, MarketStreet will bring a VW photo bus to
the property, DJ Rick DeSanctis will spin the beats and mystical performers will entertain. Capping off the festivities, MarketStreet will countdown to 7 p.m. and shower crowds with a colorful burst of 50 pounds of confetti. Those dressed in costume will be entered to win a MarketStreet prize. The MarketStreet rink , which is sponsored by Lahey Health, is better than ever this year thanks to a new Warming
Tent that houses skate rentals and ensures skaters and spectators stay toasty in even the chilliest of weather.
