rom a very young age, I understood that being a mom was one of life’s most important and admirable roles. I couldn’t wait to become one myself. At age 3, I would spend hours pushing my two Siamese cats up and down the sidewalk in a baby stroller. I was a mom in training.

As I got older (and the cats became less cooperative), I moved on to stuffed animals and baby dolls.

Then in my teen years, I became an aunt and also began babysitting for neighbors. At 26, I thought I was ready to become a mother. But nothing could have prepared me for the moment the nurse placed my newborn son in my arms. It was love at first sight—the deepest, most unconditional love I had ever known.

A couple of years later, my twin daughters were born. My heart felt so full, I thought it might burst.

My hands were full too—juggling diapers, bottles, car seats and sleepless nights. There were times, especially during the “terrible twos” and teenage years, when motherhood felt exhausting and thankless.

I know my own mom felt that way, too. As a teenager, I often looked at her with disdain, convinced she didn’t understand me or

the world I lived in. I was so wrong.

Luckily, she became wise again the moment I became a mother myself.

She was there for me, and loved my children as deeply as I did. No matter what I needed, she was always willing to listen and lend a hand.

Now, 30 years later, my father has passed, and she found herself alone for the first time. It’s been a year and a half since then, and I’ve spent nearly every day with her since. I hope she knows I have her back now—just as she always had mine.

As I care for my mom, I’ve watched my daughters step up with love and thoughtfulness in ways that are new and deeply moving.

And just like that, the circle continues.

Joni Mitchell said it best in “The Circle Game:” And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return, we can only look behind From where we came And go 'round and 'round and 'round In the circle game A mother’s love. A child's love.

Life’s greatest gifts—treasure them.

Marmora ShopRite lands on Cheerios box after raising $11,000 to fight hunger

T

he ShopRite of Marmora has earned a sweet spot on your breakfast table this spring. After raising an impressive $11,000 during ShopRite’s annual “Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest,” the Marmora team secured a coveted feature on a limited-edition Cheerios box, honoring their efforts in the fight against hunger.

Owned and operated by Village Super Market and the Sumas family, ShopRite of Marmora is one of just 47 stores recognized in this friendly fundraising competition among nearly 270 ShopRite locations. Held in partnership with General Mills during Hunger Action Month in September, this annual initiative empowers ShopRite stores to raise money for local food banks and hunger-fighting organizations in their areas.

According to Feeding America, more than 34 million people in the United States – including 9 million children – are food insecure. That means millions of families are unsure of where their next meal will come

from, often forced to choose between food and other basic needs like rent or medicine.

While this issue may feel overwhelming, programs like the “ShopRite Partners In Caring” initiative prove that local action can have a powerful impact. Every dollar raised during the contest helps stock the shelves of food banks and pantries in the communities these stores serve.

In Marmora, that means directly supporting neighbors and families in Cape May and Atlantic Counties who need it most.

This yearly fundraising campaign shows that fighting hunger is something ShopRite takes personally. Since the program’s founding in 1999, “Partners In Caring” has raised over $65 million for hunger-fighting organizations. This year alone, more than $1.3 million was raised across all participating locations.

A friendly competition for a good cause, with a fun twist for the winners, makes it easy for stores to rally their teams year after year.

“Being recognized as one of the top fundraising stores is a tremendous honor for the entire ShopRite of Marmora team,” said the Marmora staff. “It reflects the store’s strong commitment to giving back and the overwhelming support from associates and customers alike.”

A lot of planning and community involvement went into raising the $11,000 this year. The Marmora team hosted a children’s face painting event, numerous bake sales, and community car washes, along with pretzel and hot dog sales offered outside the store for shoppers to enjoy. It was a true group effort and one that clearly paid off.

“The families that own and operate ShopRite stores live and work in the neighborhoods they serve,” the ShopRite team added. “They care about their community and share a commitment to investing in the future and helping those suffering from food insecurity.”

In addition to being featured on a special-edition Cheerios box this spring, the Marmora store will also make a special donation to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, South Jersey branch.

“The Community FoodBank of New Jersey – South is a trusted and impactful partner in the fight against hunger,” the ShopRite team shared.

“The ShopRite of Marmora is proud to support them and help make an

immediate and meaningful impact on neighbors in need.”

To celebrate this impactful contribution to fighting hunger in our local community, and to honor the efforts of the ShopRite of Marmora staff, an in-store celebration was hosted on Wednesday, April 23 at noon. Here, they unveiled the limited-edition Cheerios box featuring the store associates and formally presented the donation to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey – South.

The event fostered camaraderie and recognized both the hard work of each employee and the generosity of the store’s customers who helped make this campaign a success.

While the goal of this annual fundraising initiative is, of course, to raise money for food-insecure families in each participating ShopRite community, there is also hope that others will see, hear, and be inspired to help out in their own ways.

“We hope that our customers see the power of community action,” the ShopRite team reflected. “Every donation, no matter how small, adds up to something greater. We want our customers to feel proud of the role they played and to understand that they helped put food on the table for someone in need.”

In the end, it’s not just about a box of cereal. It’s about what that box represents: compassion, teamwork, and the power of a community that cares. Thanks to the team at ShopRite of Marmora, that message will now sit proudly on shelves and in homes, reminding us all that hunger is everyone’s fight and, together, we can win.

Petty gets taste of majors

They grow up yearning to reach the pinnacle of their respective sport, to stand on the pitcher’s mound in a major league ballpark, to swish a jumper in an NBA arena, to cross the goal line in an NFL stadium.

A few local standouts have done it. Most recently, Millville’s Mike Trout has won three American League MVP awards while playing for the Los Angeles Angels. Cedar Creek High School graduate Bo Melton caught a touchdown pass for the Green Bay Packers in an NFL playoff game. St. Augustine Prep product Pops Mensu-Bonsu spent parts of four seasons in the NBA. Last week, it was Chase Petty’s turn.

Morgan switched to basketball and spent the 2019-20 season at Division II Goldey-Beacon College in Delaware, but the school was forced to cancel the 20-21 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Former Absegami High School quarterback Mike Isgro, then a Delaware Valley assistant football coach, convinced him to trade in his basketball sneakers for football cleats again.

He played two seasons for Delaware Valley, sat out a year due to an eligibility issue, then returned last fall to finish his career.

“I’ve definitely been overlooked a lot,” Morgan told The Press of Atlantic City.

“So many times, I could have said no, but I said yes.”

Much of his motivation stemmed from becoming a father.

Nahsir Jr. was born on May 14, 2023. Amar Haseem arrived three months ago.

“They gave me all the motivation in the world to keep going,” he said.

“It gave me strength.”

Morgan wasn’t signed by the Eagles after the minicamp, but still could merit an invitation to training

camp for them or some other team.

He has all the traits - size, speed (4.49 in the 40-yard dash) and athleticism - that make NFL scouts drool.

“Hopefully, I get a call back and after that I’m praying for another call back,” he said. “I’m taking it day by day, step by step.“

Boxing back in A.C. Saturday

Professional boxing returns to the boardwalk Saturday when promoter Alex Barbosa of R&B Promotions stages a card at Hard Rock Atlantic City.

Nine bouts are scheduled, including a six-round bout featuring unbeaten super-welterweight Oluwafemi Oyeleye (16-0, 10 KOs) of Philadelphia.

Businesses big and small are growing in Absecon

A

bsecon is experiencing some tremendous growth with activity at the Marketplace of Absecon and even downtown.

The White Horse Wine and Spirits store moved out of the Marketplace in December 2023 to their own free-standing, 25,000-square-foot building. They are now located at Absecon Crossing, 410 White Horse Pike.

However, instead of panicking, the owners of the Marketplace went on a mission to locate a replacement tenant, and that they did. They hit a home run by securing an Aldi grocery store for the vacant 20,996-squarefoot space. It was a win-win for both retail centers.

In this day and age of the contracting retail sector, Aldi is one retail chain that is expanding at a strategic,

South Jersey especially is expe-

riencing the positive effects of this growth pattern, with stores located in Egg Harbor Township, Rio Grande, now Absecon and soon in Somers Point. The company claims that 25% of all households shop at an Aldi store on average nationwide.

The public is invited to a grand opening at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, May 15. To celebrate, the first 100 customers will receive a gift bag with a sampling of Aldi-exclusive products and a gift card as part of an Aldi Golden Ticket giveaway program. Shoppers can also enter a sweepstakes for a $500 Aldi gift card through opening weekend.

Sarah is originally from Absecon, but moved to Key Largo, Fla., where the family had a successful floral shop. However, she missed South Jersey. When she realized there wasn’t a flower and gift shop in Absecon, Sarah and her family decided to give it a try last year. It has been growing ever since. No pun intended.

She said she loves the hometown feel of Absecon.

he South Jersey Field of Dreams is celebrating three new wheelchair-accessible picnic benches along the third baseline, thanks to the hard work of a local scout.

JT Schenker, a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 77 in Smithville, designed the benches to accommodate two wheelchairs on either end and lower seats for children who use crutches.

to installation. He enlisted the help of friends, family and fellow scouts and reached out to local businesses for donated materials.

Schenker, who is passionate about woodshop and hopes to pursue a career in carpentry, said the toughest part wasn't building the benches — it was stepping back and leading the process.

"I'm a very hands-on person, and this is something I was really invested in. So, it was hard not to do the work," he explained. "I felt really accomplished, not only for myself being able to get closer to the milestone of Eagle but also to help these guys out and provide a nice area for families to sit."

The benches were installed in April, just in time for South Jersey Field of Dreams' upcoming baseball season. The Absecon-based field provides a place for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities to play baseball.

Established in 2003, the organization was born from an idea Chairman Barry Hackett's wife brought home. Hackett explained that the organization’s core board members have worked together for over 50 years, bringing the Special Olympics to South Jersey in the 1970s and supporting children with disabilities through a range of projects and fund-

"One day, my wife came home with a magazine about The Miracle League in Atlanta, Georgia, and she said, 'You guys do so much. Do you think we could do this here?'" said Hackett, explaining that their interest was also personal, as Hackett's grandson, Jacob, has cerebral palsy, and they were interested in starting something for children.

"Here we are. Her idea, our work and 22 years later, we're playing," he said.

Over the years, the organization

has seen steady support from the surrounding community, whether through generous local donors and sponsors or helping hands from first responders, schools, residents and scouts like Schenker, among many others.

Today, the complex features a concession stand, a covered picnic area, an accessible playground, a souvenir shop and a miniature golf course and is supported through volunteers — a far cry from what Chuck Dhyne, founder and games director, remembers of the field’s early days.

"None of this was here when we were given the field," said Dhyne, referring to when the city first donated the baseball field at the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreation Park. “It was just a dirt infield a backstop and dugouts."

The program now serves more than 300 players from 33 cities across seven counties in the southern third of the state.

"We just had 45 brand-new registrations just this spring," said Dhyne, noting that the league isn't just for children. Some players are in their 30s and 40s, with the official sign-up age ranging from 6 to 35.

Notably, the organization doesn't charge registration fees, and every player receives a uniform at no cost.

Even food at the concession stand is free.

"There's no way a child is turned away here because they can't afford to be here," emphasized Hackett.

With the help of volunteers who assist the players on the field, parents get a chance to relax and fully enjoy watching their children play.

Hackett said the parking lot is often overflowing on game days, and the stands are "packed" with cheering families. For many parents, it's the first time they've seen their child participate in an organized sport.

"That's really important," said Hackett. "We like to say that baseball is the vehicle to get the kids here, but it's the socialization that happens once they're here and they're with their buddies."

However, the founders stress that the field is a place that the community can enjoy, and they encourage all to attend one of their games, especially those who may not have heard of the organization.

he City of Ventnor is thrilled to announce the return of its highly anticipated Annual Block Party, taking place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year’s event promises a day of fun for residents and visitors alike.

Event details:

The block party will span Ventnor Avenue, from Portland Avenue to Troy Avenue. Attendees can expect a festive atmosphere with live entertainment, food vendors, arts and crafts, games and much more. It’s a celebration of the community, and everyone is invited to come out, enjoy and connect!

Important traffic and parking information:

To ensure the safety and smooth flow of the event, Ventnor City Police Department will be implementing no parking zones and traffic detours throughout the day. These measures will help accommodate the large crowds and keep traffic moving efficiently.

As for what’s next, Garrabrant says he’s excited for the journey ahead, both personally and through the Navy ROTC program.

“I want to continue helping others and keep growing as a person,” he said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, traveling, and learning.

With the Navy, I know I’ll get to see a lot of the world and gain experiences that will shape who I become.”

housands gathered in downtown Ocean City on Saturday, May 3, for one of the resort’s most beloved traditions—the annual Spring Block Party. Despite a brief spell of morning clouds and showers, the skies soon cleared, giving way to a perfect spring day filled with sunshine, shopping, and smiles.

The block party stretched along Asbury Avenue from 5th to 14th streets, welcoming more than 350 crafters and vendors offering handmade goods, art, and early summer discounts. Visitors browsed booths overflowing with colorful wares while enjoying the sounds of live music echoing through the streets.

Lovely ways to enjoy your lilacs

I

f you walk through a garden this time of year and become entranced by a wonderful scent wafting through the air, chances are you have happened upon lilacs.

Their fragrance can fill an entire garden with heavenly perfume. Though the beautiful clusters of flowers only last for a short time, lilac bushes have been known to live over 100 years.

Though lilacs can grow in partial shade, they need full sun for the best blooms. They prefer fertile, welldrained soil that is slightly alkaline to neutral. Our South Jersey weather provides the perfect conditions for lilacs since they need a period of cold dormancy to trigger flowering, and full sun in spring.

To promote blooms for the following year, prune spent flowers immediately after they have finished blooming, since they begin to form next year’s flower buds shortly after the flowers fade. If you wait too long,

you may accidentally sacrifice next year’s flowers. Thinning out branches will improve air circulation. Prune out any dead or damaged branches as well as those that are crossing or rubbing. After removing the oldest stems, allow some of the strongest suckers to grow and eventually replace these main branches. But do not allow too many suckers to remain, as this will draw strength away from the plant. If you are able to remove suckers with roots attached, these can be planted as a way to propagate new plants.

Even though lilac bushes have a long lifespan, over time, mature lilacs will produce fewer flowers and will probably need a refresh. As these older lilacs show signs of their age, they may need to be pruned more aggressively than just a light pruning. In order to minimize stress to the plant, you can accomplish this refresh with a process covering a three-year period. In this method, you remove one-third of the oldest, thickest stems down to the ground each year for three years. This method is best for an overgrown lilac and after three years you should have a healthy plant with mostly new shoots.

Of course, the best way to enjoy lilacs is up close and personal as cut flowers that you can bring indoors.

You may have received a vase of freshly cut fragrant lilacs from a friend, only to have them wilt or go

limp. Fortunately, we have a trick for that. Because lilacs have woody stems, it is difficult for them to absorb water and stay hydrated. One solution is to lightly pound the bottom of the stem with a hammer to open up the stem, allowing the flowers to take up water more easily. You can also cut a one-inch slit up the stem. Be sure to immediately place the stems in a vase of water and change the water frequently. This same method can be used for other flowers with woody stems, such as hydrangeas.

Did you know that lilac flowers are edible? That’s right, you can eat the flowers of the common lilac (Syringa vulgaris). The best way to enjoy lilac flowers for consumption is to use them to infuse sugar, sugar water, or honey. You can also steep lilac blossoms to make lilac lemonade or tea. The flowers can also be used as a lovely garnish for salads, desserts, or beverages. Some other ways to enjoy lilac flowers: lilac jelly, lilac ice cream, lilac fritters, and candied lilacs. Let your culinary creativity guide you, and soon you will have visions of sugared lilacs dancing in your heads.

Colony Club of Ocean City to celebrate 75th anniversary with scholarship fundraiser

he Colony Club of Ocean City, New Jersey, will mark its 75th anniversary with a special evening of celebration, service and scholarship on Thursday, June 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point.

The milestone event will feature dinner, a cash bar, and a fashion

show presented by She’z the Boss.

Attendees can also participate in a variety of raffles, including a 50/50, mystery raffle, and lottery hat raffle, along with door prizes and themed basket raffles.

In 2024, the Colony Club provided over $12,000 in educational support to the Ocean City community. In addition to scholarships, the organization contributes to numerous nonprofit groups including CASA, OCNJ Cares, CARA , and the Ocean City Historical Museum.

Family business brings hearing loss awareness to the shore while donating to charity

ucked away among a slew of local vendors in Stainton’s on Asbury in Ocean City, some unique magnets and signs lay in wait.

Like many typical shore town wares, some of these decorations are adorned with shells while others spell out the town’s name, proudly proclaiming “OCNJ.” But unlike most others, these ones are depicted in American Sign Language (ASL).

Even more special, approximately 10% of the proceeds go toward charities, including to an organization that helps families with hearing loss access hearing aids.

Formerly known as the Logie Shop, the business is in the process of changing its name to Logie & Co.,

named after Allison and Spencer Rutt’s sons, Logan and Cohen.

As of March this year, the small shop has donated $12,000 to charity.

Logan’s hearing loss sparked the idea for Logie & Co. According to their website, their mission is to help others find joy in their hearing loss journey.

Logie & Co. donates to charity:water, which provides safe drinking water to people in developing countries; and the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which funds hearing aids for those with hearing loss.

While many of their products feature ASL, their shop also sells handmade jewelry and magnets without sign language imagery. Some of their magnets for sale feature a miniature diorama of a stack of books and a cup of coffee. “Vent clips” are also for sale, with faux flowers on them that adorn car vents and function as air fresheners.

Logan, age 8, and his brother also have their own affiliated shop, “Logie & Co. Jr.” that sells the kind of toys that they are passionate about, including foldable ramps for toy cars and play cutting boards.

Mothers' group builds community on the trail Family Tides

very other week, rain or shine, a group of local moms can be found trekking into the forest with kids in tow and babies snug to their chests. For Pineys at Play, a nature-based playgroup, these hikes are often more than just a chance to get little ones outside and exploring — they're about building connection and community, too.

Felicia Lisitski, the group’s founder, started the playgroup last June after the birth of her second daughter, seeking a way to connect with others while exploring the outdoors.

“I was kicking around the idea of: I am going on trails. I’m hiking anyway.

I’m teaching my kids about the Pinelands and about our environment,” she explained. “I wanted to do that not by myself. And motherhood, when you just start out, can be pretty lonely with just your kids.”

After pitching the idea to a few local mom-oriented Facebook groups, Lisitski received an overwhelmingly positive response. She launched the Facebook group Pineys at Play - A Forest Playgroup, which grew quickly.

Today, the group has over 300 members.

“Our first hike, we had over 50 people on the trail, which was just incredible — all these tiny little legs and so many incredible moms that were just ready,” said Lisitski. “Cars just kept coming, and it was so cool just to see, like, what I thought was a little idea and a need for me is actually a need for a lot more people than I even realized.”

The group hikes year-round, exploring trails throughout Atlantic County with about 20 moms regularly joining each outing.

Each excursion begins with about a mile-long hike, followed by a kid-friendly activity like games, stories, climbing trees, making mud pies, scavenger hunts or experiments, such as testing if acorns float. Lisitski also provides snacks for everyone.

“Most of our group is rather young, so it’s just to get them started and curious,” she said. “Then they begin to kind of explore on their own and ask their own questions.”

The playgroup hasn’t just been a valuable resource for getting kids outside and socializing through activities, but it’s also been a resource for mothers, too.

The focus is not only for the kids — it’s to create those relationships and build your own village,” said Lisitski.

“I joke with a lot of the moms like, ‘Hey, if you think hiking in the woods with a toddler sounds like a good idea, then we’re going to agree on multiple things.’”

Lisitski said many members have formed close friendships, with some setting up playdates or even forming homeschool groups together. Others have stepped up to offer babysitting help or even brought each other's kids to hike to support members during illness or postpartum recovery.

Lisitski said that one of her goals was to make the group accessible and explained that while there are plenty of forest schools and similar resources in the area, some come at a high cost.

“Another reason it’s a free activity is I’m momming at the same time,” she said, noting that it’s “simple play outside" and not “super structured."

“Parents like that. It’s kind of prompted play, and then the kids kind of create and see things we don’t see. They’re their own eyes and their own imagination — that’s been really cool to see and watch our kids grow together and learn together,” said Lisitski.

She encourages moms to show up just as they are — messy mornings and all.

“Most of the time, the kids are in rain boots because toddlers love rain boots. It’s so impractical, but they love rain boots. Or we’re in our pajamas, and our hair isn’t brushed, and so when moms reach out to me, I always say, ‘Listen, it’s a judgment-free zone.

“We give a little grace period with our arrival time because it's hard to get out of the door and on time.”

And no matter how moms get there or what kind of day they’re having, whether they’re toting toys along the trail or wrangling fussy kids, it’s not about showing up perfectly — it’s about getting outside together.

“The point is we all got outside.

We all got to be outside in the forest and enjoying each other, and everyone feels better after,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how ridiculous it is that you're carrying an RC car on the hike because you feel better after. I can be a better mom after I go and do this. It’s like a reset button.”

Lisitski understands how intimidating and overwhelming it can be to join a new group, but she encourages anyone interested to give it a shot.

“I want you to come. If you're feeling nervous, send me a message. We can talk. We can hang out prior,” she said. “It’s so nerve-wracking to try and put yourself out there, but it’s so worth it.”

Assessing the impact of a downsized NOAA

C

onsider 164 endangered or threatened species conserved and recovered, 47 rebuilt fish stocks since 2000 and 1.5 million forecasts and warnings each year – that’s just some of the scope of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is part of the United States Department of Commerce.

Between layoffs, buyouts and early retirements, over 2,400 NOAA employees have departed from the agency since February. It represents a combined 27,000 years of experience, according to DaNa Carlis, director at NOAA. This is part of the fallout from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)’s cost-cutting crusade.

I’ve been asked more than a few times what my thoughts are on this.

I don’t work for NOAA, I never have.

However, I have friends that do, mainly at the National Weather Service, probably the most popular arm of NOAA. Two friends no longer work for NOAA as a result of what has happened over the past few months.

There’s also the elephant in the room – the politics. I ask you to ask yourselves, how would you feel if Kamala Harris, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., or Joe Biden had done this? I also remind you that Congress, not the president, is given the power of the purse.

Like climate change, there are questions about the facts, and then there are questions about how to feel or not feel about them. I do the first part. You all motivate me to talk and write about the weather every single day. It’s tremendous.

With all of that being said, let’s break it down.

The facts

Roughly 20% of NOAA's nearly 13,000 employees have left since the end of February. That breaks down to the following: About 1,000 probationary employees – those who held their current job for less than two years, per USA Today. That also includes those who

worked with NOAA for decades, but just earned a promotion; 500 employees who took a voluntary buyout, per The New York Times, and an additional 1,029 workers in mid-March, according to USA Today.

Our local National Weather Service office, which is located in Mount Holly, Burlington County, and was located at Atlantic City International Airport as recently as the mid-1990s, did not have layoffs. They provide us with human-curated forecasts, public outreach and, perhaps most importantly, weather watches, warnings as well as advisories.

In offices where there have been reductions, there have been fewer public outreach events. There has been less ability to conduct meteorological research outside of forecasting and, in a worst-case scenario, the Goodland, Kansas National Weather Service office temporarily stepped away from 24-hour coverage.

Around-the-clock coverage is crucial. Even on “quiet” weather days, something like wildfire, air pollution, tornadoes, or tsunamis may occur.

In the United States, and our territories, weather balloon launches have been suspended in Kotzebue, Alaska; Omaha, Neb.; Rapid City, S.D.; Albany, N.Y. and Gray, Maine. Weather balloons are our eyes in the sky, providing crucial data up to 50,000 feet high. Launched twice daily, they collect data too high to be observed by weather stations. Temperatures, dew point, pressure, wind speed and wind direction are all included in this.

This is still a small percentage of the balloon launches. However, every single forecast weather model is only as good as the data being put into it.

High-resolution balloon launches are a key part of this. Compared to last year, there is a large coverage gap in the Northern Great Plains and New England.

The National Aeronautical and Space Administration, which needs highly accurate and precise weather forecasts for launching rockets into space, says that 18% of their observations come from weather balloon launches.

Hurricane season starts June 1.

The National Hurricane Center, a division of the National Weather Service in Miami, Fla., just set a new record for prediction accuracy from 12 hours out, down to 5 days out. Staff involved in the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System, critical for improving track and intensity forecasts, were cut. A few hurricane hunter crew members were impacted, too.

The entire external affairs team for NOAA was laid off. They are the people I speak with for interviews, data and more. Scientists working on artificial intelligence climate prediction were also let go. That includes Zack Labe, who is a good follow on social media.

The forecast

In fiscal year 2024, NOAA had a $6.8 billion budget. The proposed 2025 Trump administration NOAA budget is down to $6.6 billion, and the administration proposes a reduction of $1.67 billion in NOAA’s fiscal year 2026 budget. Funding from NOAA ultimately trickles down to the National Weather Service budget.

The administration’s proposal suggests ending a variety of research grants to individuals, organizations and data related to climate. Cuts to grants such as “Policy Experience in Equity, Climate and Health,” are mentioned, too. This also asks for a $8 billion cut to the satellite program.

If you read the full description of cuts, it doesn’t specifically mention cuts to weather operations. While

climate and weather are separate, they are under the same umbrella, no pun intended. It’s like how you need flour and water, two different items, to make bread. To get our clearest possible understanding of the environment, you need both.

According to NOAA’s “passback” document from a few weeks ago, funding for the National Weather Service would revert back to 2024’s level. The proposal calls for moving the Space Weather Prediction Center to the Department of Homeland Security. They are the ones that provide data on the aurora borealis, including the serene scene we had at the Jersey Shore from the Northern Lights last October.

Outside of the National Weather Service, but within NOAA, no funding would be provided for Coastal Zone Management Grants, which helps coastal towns and nonprofits address coastal flooding and erosion.

The National Coastal Resilience Fund would be eliminated, which supports the restoration and enhancement of natural infrastructure to protect our shore.

The next generation of weather satellites, named Geostationary Extended Observers (GenXO), would be cancelled. However, the document does maintain that a new upgrade to satellites is needed in the 2030s. An

increase of $46.5 million is proposed to fund low earth orbit satellites, such as the ones that collect weather data at the Earth’s poles.

This is the Trump administration proposal. Congress will then review this and make adjustments that work for Congress and the president.

The NWS has been understaffed for years. Even before 2025, the National Weather Service offices had a number of vacancies across the United States. Now, roughly 50% of the 122 weather forecasts are at least 20% short of fully being staffed.

The National Weather Service has reorganized before, most recently in the 1990s. That moved the local office at Atlantic City International Airport to its current location in Mt. Holly.

You can make the argument that the NWS, and its parent NOAA reorganization, need cuts to reduce the federal debt, which stands at $36.8 trillion on May 5. You can make the argument that if the government needs to conduct reductions in force and that there should be a master plan to account for this.

You can make the argument that NOAA needed to stay at its current levels or maybe even double in size.

That’s not the purpose of this column.

However, saying “my phone app tells me the weather so we don’t need NOAA” is not an answer. As Marshall Shepherd, former president of the American Meteorological Society wrote in Forbes, that’s like saying you don’t need potato farmers because you can get french fries from McDonald’s. NOAA is the source that provides data to weather apps, and to your friendly, local meteorologists, too.

Furthermore, the argument that AI advances mean we don’t need all of these NOAA jobs is not true either. AI can’t conserve endangered species, or rebuild fish stocks on their own. They certainly don’t have the internal knowledge the Mt. Holly office has of our coastline as they issue weather alerts.

The reduction in force at NOAA is a decision based around dollars and power.

Stockton sophomore Nastasya Boyko named 2025 HERO of the Year

O

ne of the first things Nastasya “Annie” Boyko saw when she made her way down Vera King Farris Drive as a first-year Stockton University student was the LED screen displaying the smiling face of Ensign John R. Elliott, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate whose tragic death has inspired the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers.

For 15 years, the campaign has partnered with Stockton University to select a student who embodies the same responsibility and compassion that Elliott exemplified during his life. Elliott was hit and killed by a drunk driver on his way home for his mother's birthday in 2000. That same year, his family founded the John R. Elliott Foundation and the HERO Campaign. The student selected is featured on signage around campus and on a billboard on the Atlantic City Expressway promoting the HERO Campaign’s message of safe driving.

NAACP honors Henderson for ‘throwing parties’ that impact Atlantic City

Jon Henderson doesn’t do anything halfway.

Whether it’s driving his motorcycle to Alaska, growing a handlebar mustache or collecting pinball machines and reptiles, Henderson always pushes the limits.

The same applies to the way he handles business.

or bringing little people to throw each other around a wrestling ring, Henderson has set the standard in the Atlantic City area on how to run successful events.

When he started Good Time Tricycle about 20 years ago, it would be a cliché to say he never imagined what it would become. But knowing Henderson, that would also probably not be true. Henderson thinks big. He always has.

So, the fact that the Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival — which will turn 20 years old next year — his Downbeach Seafood Festival, Witch-Craft, Knee High Knuckle Buster Micro Wrestling, Atlantic City Tattoo Expo and other lifestyle-driven events that he has created have attracted more than 1 million people to the area was likely something he would very much imagine achieving.

His list of achievements is impressive, and you can add being named the 2025 “Business Honoree” by the Atlantic City NAACP at their 51st Annual Freedom Fund Gala to that list.

And that one really hit him in the heart.

“This carries a bunch of weight,” Henderson told the impressive audience at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on April 26. “An award like this is very meaningful, and I am grateful.”

Henderson, who is never short on words, actually said he was speechless at the end of his relatively short address to the gala crowd.

And for those who know Henderson, that should demonstrate how

touched he really was.

Kaleem Shabazz, the 3rd Ward Atlantic City Councilman and Branch President, said the honor was well deserved after longtime Henderson friend, colleague and Atlantic City School Board Member Geoff Dorsey nominated Henderson and eventually presented the award to him at the event.

“One of the elements that makes Atlantic City — or any city — a good community is business support,” Shabazz said. “In our minds, he was advocating for good business in Atlantic City. Many people know about his activities and events that he brings to Atlantic City and how they bring positive attention to Atlantic City and help Atlantic City grow, not just for tourists to come here but for locals to attend, as well. So, we thought he would make a great honoree, and we were proven right. We know he will continue working in Atlantic City and we salute him.”

Henderson, who also received the Spirit of Hospitality Award from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority a few years ago, certainly deserves the salute.

Moving to Atlantic City from the Scranton, Pa., area in 1996, Henderson found himself in the casino world working in player development for Resorts Casino Hotel — where he met his wife and business partner Carol — and Harrah’s Resort before eventually running events for Caesars Entertainment, which also included Caesars Atlantic City and Showboat at that time.

The Seed beer launch honors Heart of Surfing Tune In, Turn On With Doug Deutsch

his was an event we couldn’t resist: Checking out Atlantic City’s premiere craft brewery, The Seed: A Living Beer Project, which last Saturday

hosted a terrific event for The Heart of Surfing, a nonprofit organization founded by Bob and Cindy Fertsch, publisher and editor respectively, of Shore Local newsmagazine, which offers free surfing and skateboarding lessons for families with autism or other developmental disabilities.

A full house of friends and craft beer enthusiasts gathered at The Seed’s cool, almost-bohemian location off Baltic Avenue to honor and support Heart of Surfing, with the launch of their IPA brew Heart Swell, which featured the artwork of Jamie

“This is the second year in a row we have brewed Heart Swell, a hazy New England style IPA, for our Heart of Surfing event,” said Sean Towers, who owns The Seed along with Amanda Cardinali.

“Last year, we were unable to can the batch due to scheduling constraints. We have since purchased our own canning line and were excited to get this beer in cans for folks to take home with them.

“When speaking with Cindy (Fertsch) about the (beer’s) label art, she graciously shared a couple of beautiful works of art that Jamie had done and we settled on using an image that he drew of him surfing with his dog,” Towers continued. “It is the perfect label art to help embody not just the beer, but what the entire community surrounding Heart of Surfing is about.”

We have also been hearing about the bi-weekly jam sessions The Seed was hosting, and asked Sean about that.

“Our dear friend CJ Sooy hosts our open jam session twice monthly (on the second and the final Thursday of each month), said Towers.

“Signups begin around 5 p.m. and the open jam begins at 6 p.m. Our friends from Mortal Minds Coffee Roasters also set up shop at each of these sessions.

“These nights have certainly gained popularity and traction, attracting an incredible and diverse mix of insane local talent. It really is an amazing space to come and listen to a wide array of local musicians spanning multiple genres and styles. All are welcome to join and sign up!”

On Saturday, May 10, Grateful Dead tribute Crickets and Cicadas perform at The Seed starting at 3

p.m. (free).

“These shows always pack out and are a great time, and bring such fun vibes to the brewery,” he said.

Also in May, they’ll celebrate the release of their newest batch of Poetry in Motion, where Allison Stella will be leading a spoken word and poetry evening, with music interludes while tasting and releasing Poetry in Motion Blend 4. Folks can stay up to date on brewery happenings by following their social media accounts @theseedbeer.

We’re always interested in new talent; the Lizzie Rose Room in Tuckerton hosts the Kelli Baker Band Friday, May 10. We asked who influenced her strong, soulful vocal style.

“A large part of my singing is influenced by gospel. I grew up singing in the church choir like so many did,” said Baker. “The voice I have now is not the voice I had then, or even five years ago. What comes out of me now is some control from my vocal coach, which allows me to keep my voice, but other than that, it’s raw emotion.”

Ocean goes big for seventh anniversary celebration

s Jason Alexander playing George Costanza on “Seinfeld” would have put it, get ready for the Summer of Ocean.

Ocean Casino-Resort has unveiled plans for its “Lucky Summer of Sevens,” a season-long schedule of promotions, sweepstakes, special events, restaurant openings and new attractions to celebrate the posh pleasure dome’s seventh birthday (which is June 28).

The idea, said Ocean General Manager Bill Callahan, is to showcase “everything this property has to offer.”

Arguably, the biggest news coming out of the Boardwalk’s easternmost gambling den is that Philadelphia-based master-of-therestaurant-universe Stephen Starr is planning to open a pair of eateries there. While details are scarce, it is known that one will be French-lean-

This is significant because Starr, one of the world’s leading restaurateurs, has, technically, never operated under an Atlantic City casino roof: In 2006, he opened outposts of his popular Philly joints, Buddakan and Continental, at the Pier Shops at Caesars, but they were separated from the midtown gaming hall by the Boardwalk.

Perhaps even more important, the planting of Starr’s flag in Ocean appears to validate the opinion of many observers of the local gaming industry that the casino is now our town’s hottest, hippest and mostluxe adult playpen.

However, Starr’s projects are but the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

Below is a look at some of what else is happening at Ocean this summer.

A new face (and hair) in ‘The Hook’

The newest cast member of “The Hook” at Caesars Atlantic City is “hair suspensionist” Miranda Menzies.

The Edinburgh, Scotland native is an aerialist who performs contortions while suspended in the air by her hair.

Cheers to Mom! Drink Up!

n May 10, 1913, the House of Represent atives passed a resolution requiring all federal employees, including the president, to wear a white carnation the next day in honor of mothers. May 11 was the second Sunday in May that year. The following year, Congress requested that President Wilson declare the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Initially, Wilson commemorated this as a day to honor the mothers of fallen soldiers. Later, the holiday was extended to include mothers and maternal bonds in general, including aunts, daughters, and other women who serve a maternal role in the family.

In 2025, Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 11. Although flowers are often associated with the day, many women we celebrate may also en-

joy a bottle of wine on their day of (hopefully) relaxation. I don’t typically encourage you to judge a wine by its label, but each of the wines I’ll recommend today is both lovely and delicious.

Let’s begin with a wine from Spain, called Evodia. This red wine has the classic aroma profile of the varietal — cherries and violets — and the flavor is equally lovely. The tannins are soft, and the palate is long-lasting. The 100% Garnacha grapes used in making this wine are organically grown with no chemical herbicides or pesticides. There are fewer than 100 parts per million of sulfites in this wine, as no sulfites are added to those naturally occurring in the grapes. The label itself is absolutely lovely, making this wine a total winner for your Mother’s Day gift. As a long-time business professor, I always told students to strive for the win-win scenario. The Evodia Garnacha is the win-win-win wine scenario.

Moving on to Italy, the Allumea wines might make you mom’s favorite. These wines have become incredibly popular and feature labels that make the recipient feel like they’ve received a bouquet of flowers. Allumea is derived from the

Port Republic hosts successful citywide cleanup

n Saturday, May 3, the city of Port Republic hosted a successful citywide cleanup event that brought together residents of the community in an effort to revitalize the town. The event is funded through a state grant from the New Jersey Clean Communities Program, which provides volunteer work for community members. Since its establishment in 1986, the Clean Communities Program has promoted volunteer cleanup of public lands and reduced litter through education and volunteerism. The Atlantic County Utilities Authority, or ACUA, has managed the program for Atlantic County since 2005 and plays a key role in coordinating county events and distributing supplies.

This year, Port Republic had a turnout of over a dozen communi-

ty members volunteering to clean up trash throughout the town. The program supplies volunteers with safety shirts, gloves, trash bags and pickup tools to ensure a safe and effective event. Delegation of roads and areas is left to volunteers, with many choosing to clean around their own streets first. For safety reasons, children are assigned to less hazardous areas such as the Harry Bowen Memorial Park and the Port Beach.

They participate in supervised activities such as picking up litter from the city’s shoreline, playground, and other open green spaces like the baseball field. Meanwhile, the adult volunteers take on the main roads such as Pitney and Old New York Road.

Multiple families showed up for the event on Saturday, eager to contribute their time to the cleanup initiative. Brandy Blevin, city hall municipal clerk and Port Republic representative, showed excitement for the program’s turnout and success.

“Usually, we get a lot of young kids and families, which is nice because the kids love it,” Blevin said.

It’s a great way for children to start volunteering and hopefully

foster their desire to participate in other local volunteer programs as well. Their excitement not only creates a fun atmosphere but also brings parents and other community members out as well. It’s a shared sense of community responsibility that motivates residents to take part in the cleanup. Of course, the free lunch provided afterward is just an extra incentive and a kind way to say thanks.

This annual event not only helps preserve Port Republic but also creates and fosters a strong sense of neighborhood pride, environmental education and responsibility.

Throughout the years, Port Republic has noticed an increase in litter, finding discarded waste such as plastic materials, cigarettes, and even miniature liquor bottles along the city’s streets and municipal fields.

The cleanup initiative is a reliable and efficient way for the community to dispose of litter of that kind. The event aims to enhance and restore Port Republic’s beauty and maintain environmental standards. Mayor Niki Giberson participated in Saturday’s event, stating the reason for this great turnout is town pride and respect for Port Republic.

“It’s a unique town, you know, there's nothing quite like it. People want to preserve that. Programs like these give them a sense of community responsibility,” Giberson said.

Resident Jessica Lock volunteered to bring the town back to life. She was inspired by other town cleanups and decided to show up for her community by cleaning the roads with other participants.

“I was inspired by a cleanup my girlfriend went to in Delaware. She cleaned up Slaughter Beach and had the best time, so it made me want to do my own,” Lock said. Lock and other volunteers participated in cleaning the Mill Pond Trails and Riverside Drive on the other side of the beach.

After 24 years of the city-wide cleanup, originally started by Doris Bugdon, Port Republic managed to host another successful event this past weekend while bringing together members of the community once again.

Gone are the days when seeing a therapist meant driving across town, waiting in a reception room and trying to squeeze a 50-minute session into a busy schedule. One of the most exciting changes in recent years is how accessible therapy has become thanks to the rise of virtual platforms.

How can you play a role during Mental Health Awareness Month this May? You don’t need to be a professional or an expert to make a difference; you just need to be open and compassionate. Here are a few ideas to get started: Talk about it: Share your story or listen to someone else’s. Normalizing mental health struggles helps break the stigma.

Try something new: Download a mental wellness app, take a free mind-

fulness class, or explore resources you haven’t tried before.

Check in with others: Sometimes, asking, “How are you really doing?” opens the door to a meaningful conversation.

Appreciate the small stuff: Did you go for a walk today, take a screen break or meditate? Those small acts all make a difference.

While the path to mental wellness can be different for everyone, none of us has to walk it alone. So, take a moment to check in with yourself and with others. When Hugh Hefner came to Atlantic City

ugh Hefner and Atlantic City were made for each other, so it seemed.

As the founder of the Playboy empire, Hefner had been selling flesh, flash and glamour since he founded Playboy Magazine in December 1953. Seven years later, he founded the first Playboy Club in Chicago.

The clubs were private, requiring a $25-per-year membership. The first club, which became a template for most that followed, included a Living Room, Playmate Bar, dining room and club room. There was also live, name entertainment, often of the jazz variety.

What made the venue unique is that members and guests were served by the iconic, glamorous, costume-clad young women known as “Playboy Bunnies,” several of whom

had been featured in the magazine.

The Chicago club must have hit a nerve. By the end of 1961, it became the busiest nightclub in the world, with more than 132,000 visitors.

Hefner would have been foolish not to expand, so expand he did. By the 1980s, there were almost 30 Playboy Clubs operating in the United States. There were also clubs in Jamaica, Montreal, Manila and three in Japan.

Some of the venues were expanded beyond the simple club concept. A few, like the Playboy franchises in Las Vegas and in McAfee – New Jersey’s Great Gorge – were top-of-the-line resorts.

Most were successful. Several, like the locations in St. Petersburg and San Diego, didn’t last long. The idea of a Playboy Club was also proposed for Philadelphia as early as 1968, by Philadelphia entrepreneur and noted bad boy Harry Jay Katz.

But the ultra-conservative mayor at the time, James H.J. Tate, and Police Commissioner Frank L. Rizzo, shot it down. Their reasons? A Playboy Club would be “a den of iniquity.”

Hefner entered the legalized gambling fray with legalization of gaming in the United Kingdom in 1965. It’s

been said that by 1981, the London club was the most successful casino in the world. A year or two later, two more Playboy casinos opened in the U.K. Given Playboy’s successful track record in operating clubs, resorts and casinos, it was logical that the next step would be to expand to Atlantic City.

In 1981, Playboy opened a hotel and casino on the Boardwalk along with a partner, the Elsinore Corpo-

ration, an outfit that had long and successfully operated the Four Queens Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas. To Hefner’s everlasting credit, he hired a female CEO. Jeanne Hood, profiled recently in these pages by Chuck Darrow, oversaw the construction of an 800-seat theater, designed by Playboy’s Entertainment VP, Sam Distefano.

Hood also had to deal with the troubling fact that the property was initially granted a provisional license

because the New Jersey Casino Control Commission had issues with Playboy and Elsinore. Specifically, the NJCCC, which was quite strict in the early days of Atlantic City gaming, had concerns about how Playboy obtained its liquor license for its New York City club, as well as the corporation’s London operation.

Finally it granted Elsinore, not Playboy, a license. The Playboy name was removed from the property in 1984. Elsinore renamed it the Atlantis.

Whatever the name was, the property had a lot going for it.

Atlantis had a prime Boardwalk location, boasted 500 rooms, good restaurants, swinging lounges and a showroom that consistently booked name talent.

The property marketed aggressively to the afternoon day-trippers, and booked afternoon shows in the cabaret, often featuring the likes of Frank Sinatra Jr. and Charlie Prose, specifically geared to the bus trade.

In my musician guise back then, I worked in the lounges of Playboy and Atlantis for several seasons, and can attest that the staff was just wonderful. They liked people and that’s something you don’t forget.

Truthfully, having worked at most of the venues in operation at that time,

Playboy/Atlantis was my favorite. Atlantis had a lot of devoted customers; there were just not enough of them.

Unfortunately, Atlantis wasn’t successful. In retrospect, it’s been said that the multi-level casino – as opposed to just one, gigantic, gaming floor – wasn’t particularly user friendly and that the property’s layout was confusing. One building housed the hotel rooms, restaurants and various levels of the casino, while the other building was home to the showroom and shops. Both were connected via

skybridge. Note that it’s been said that the multi-level casino concept also contributed to the downfall of the Claridge as a casino, as well as the pre-Ocean Revel.

In 1985, Atlantis filed for bankruptcy, but continued to operate until 1989, when its gambling license was pulled. The casino closed in May, and less than one month later, Donald Trump swooped in to buy the property at a fire sale price of $63 million.

The Trump Regency operated until 1992, when ownership reverted

to mortgage holder Chemical Bank. Trump bought it back in June of 1995, this time for $60 million, invested a reported $48 million to renovate it, and then reopened it again as Trump World’s Fair at Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.

By then the whole enterprise was looked upon by hotel/casino experts as a white elephant.

The hotel/casino continued to be troubled and simply couldn’t turn a profit. It closed for good on Oct. 3, 1999, and the building was torn down a year later.

The Playboy/Atlantis/Trump venue on the Boardwalk at Florida Avenue boasted several firsts: It was the first hotel and casino to have a female CEO, among the first to aggressively and successfully market to day-trippers, and sadly, was the first casino in Atlantic City to go out of business.

It wasn’t the last.

Sisters launch mobile bookstore in Cape May County

n May 3, sisters and business partners Lauren Long and Megan Irwin attended their first event with their mobile bookstore, Ink & Ivy. Just eight weeks prior, they decided to set out on this business venture.

The concept came together quickly when Irwin sent Long a South Carolina-based bookstore’s Instagram post that showed its mobile book bus on Feb. 26.

Irwin simply asked, “Business idea?” alongside the post.

Long replied, “Absolutely,” thinking that the idea wouldn’t go any further than that conversation.

But it turned out that the message had actually set a business plan in motion.

“And then a couple days later, she said, ‘Alright, so we have the bus,’ and we just hit the ground running,” said Long.

At the time, their brother had a school bus he had intended to con-

vert into an RV, but never did. Seeing an opportunity, the sisters jumped on it. Within days, they had decided to buy the bus from him, registered as an LLC and began the work of transforming it into a mobile bookstore.

Originally a Ford E-450 mini school bus that had already seen partial RV renovations, the vehicle required significant stripping and reworking. The sisters removed existing fixtures like a couch, bed, shower, stove and kitchen counters. After ripping out the old flooring and walls, they installed subflooring, shelving platforms and storage to prepare the space for their carefully curated inventory.

Altogether, their startup costs came in around $14,000 — a relatively low investment for a fully mobile retail space. The sisters outfitted the bus with books from six main genres: romance, sci-fi, adventure, mystery, fantasy and thriller.

In order to make the bus appealing to younger readers and book club enthusiasts, most of the titles align with popular trends on social media — specifically BookTok, a subcommunity on TikTok that focuses on books and literature.

Events are central to the mobile bookstore’s business model.

Ink & Ivy made its debut at Ludlam Island Brewery’s Spring Vendor Show, and from there, the mobile bookstore already has more than a dozen events to attend through the summer.

The sisters are planning creative, themed events, including book-and-beverage pairings at local wineries and breweries, a book tattoo flash event at Perigee Moon Tattoo Parlor and a book bouquet workshop at Bad Cat Farm.

Long and Irwin envision the bus itself offering an inviting experience.

Outside, there will be café tables and seating areas, while the interior will display books and small gifts like bookmarks, stickers and locally crafted candles. Future plans include branded merchandise such as tote bags and T-shirts.

Though the idea originated with Irwin, a relatively new reader who only began reading regularly in the past year, Long, a longtime book lover, was immediately on board.

Together, they’re building something that blends their love of reading with a growing sense of community engagement. Both sisters work in education — Long as a teacher and Irwin as a teacher’s assistant — and hope to expand their reach through collaborations with local schools, businesses and artisans.

Currently focused on events in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, the sisters already have 12 events lined up for the summer and are open to partnerships and collaborations with other local creators and venues.

After all, croissants—like birth— are a labor of love. Sure, they take time and patience, but the payoff is golden, flaky perfection that’s more than worth the effort. And unlike the sleepless nights of motherhood, these croissants come with a happy ending… and plenty of butter.

Imagine serving these fresh, warm croissants with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, all while she relaxes in the comfort of her home. Whether you surprise her with breakfast in bed or serve them at a leisurely family brunch, homemade croissants are a thoughtful and indulgent way to show how much you care. With each delicate, buttery layer, you’ll remind her of how special she is and how much she deserves to be pampered on her day.

This recipe is perfect for advanced bakers or any beginner up for a challenge. Croissants put a new meaning on labor of love, and you’ll taste every succulent layer of it.

Ingredients: ● ⅓ cup of milk, room temperature ● ¼ cup of water, room temperature ● 1 tsp of honey ● 2 tsp of dry yeast ● 3 cups of butter, room temperature ● 2 tsp of salt ● 2 cups of all-purpose flour, sifted ● 2 tsp of white sugar Instructions: 1. Prepare the dough (Detrempe): ● In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast and salt. ● Pour the warm milk into the flour mixture and stir until combined. ● Add the melted butter and mix

Knead the dough for about 5–7 minutes on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth.

Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

2. Prepare the butter block (Beurrage): ● While the dough is rising, prepare the butter block. Take the cold butter and place it between two sheets of parchment paper or plastic wrap. ● Use a rolling pin to pound and roll the butter into a 7-inch square, making sure it’s evenly spread. ● Once the butter is rolled out, chill it in the fridge while the dough finishes rising.

3. Laminate the dough (rolling and folding): ● After the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle about 10 inches by 20 inches (25cm by 50cm). ● Place the chilled butter block in the center of the dough rectangle.

Fold the dough over the butter so that the butter is fully enclosed. ● Now, roll the dough out gently into a long rectangle, about 8 inches by 24 inches (20cm by 60cm). ● Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. This is called a "single fold."

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

8. Bake the croissants: ● Place the croissants in the preheated oven and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside. ● Rotate the pan halfway through baking to ensure even cooking.

Do dogs need to brush their teeth?

A

n often overlooked part of raising a puppy is training them to tolerate their teeth being checked and brushed by handling their mouths and checking their bites. Keeping teeth clean and plaque-free is an important part of a dog's overall health. Teaching a dog to at least tolerate their mouths being held and their teeth brushed should start before puppy teeth begin to fall out, which starts roughly at the end of three months old or the start of four months of age.

While you might not need to brush puppy teeth, you should frequently check the puppy teeth to make sure that teeth are falling out according to schedule. Dogs have 42 teeth in their mouths, consisting of the molars and premolars, which are used to chew, and the incisors and canines, which are used to hold and grab things. In

my experience, teething begins with the loss of the front incisors, which most puppies swallow. You may find the larger molars and premolars lying around, but certainly do not panic if you don’t. The last teeth to go are usually the canine teeth, and they are very important to keep an eye on.

It is fairly common in puppies for the adult canine teeth to come in while a puppy canine tooth does not fall out. This results in the puppy tooth basically being stuck in a small space meant for one tooth, and is the reason I suggest starting early to teach your puppy to tolerate their mouths being handled instead of waiting until their gums hurt from having two teeth occupying the same space, which can cause discomfort.

It is important that you not wait too long for the puppy canines to fall out if the adult canine is coming through and the teeth are pushing against each other. The space is tight and can cause the adult canine to grow incorrectly, which can result in the adult canine growing into the gum.

This is called having an in-standing canine and causes problems if the canine is constantly cutting into the gum. If at about six months of age you notice that your puppy has both

Gently taking hold of my puppy’s lower jaw and raising each side of their lips to check a dog's bite is a part of all my dogs’ training, since hopefully they will end up in the show ring where showing their bite is required. More importantly, I want to be able to hold my dogs’ muzzles for the course of their entire life so that I can brush their teeth. Most people overlook training their puppy or dog to tolerate their muzzles being held a bit firmly so that you can properly brush their teeth. I start with a light grasp and reward the puppy if they don’t swing their heads around and try to escape. I also pair a command with this process, like “show teeth.” My dogs know when I hold their bottom

jaw that their teeth will be inspected or brushed.

It may be helpful to watch a video of a dog show where the judge examines the dog's bite to see how to hold your dog's muzzle for checking and brushing teeth.

Watch out for this gold bar scam ●

his week, I want to bring to your attention an alarming scam that’s becoming increasingly common and sophisticated. It’s been widely reported in the news, and unfortunately, some individuals — particularly older adults — have fallen victim.

The news is calling this the “Gold Bar Scam.” You may have seen reports in the Washington Post, ABC News, or from organizations like AARP and the FBI warning about this. These scams are designed to be convincing, and, unfortunately, they’re resulting in significant financial losses for victims.

Here’s how the scam works:

It often starts with a pop-up or error message on your computer that looks like it’s from a trusted

source. The message urges you to call a phone number. On the other end, scammers pretend to be from government agencies like the FBI or FTC. They tell you that your identity or financial accounts are at risk, and to protect yourself, you should move your money into gold bars for safekeeping.

It sounds far-fetched, but it’s working. Once someone follows their instructions and buys gold, the scammers send someone to pick it up, posing as a courier. After that, both the gold and the scammer are gone.

Here are a few things to consider to ensure you’re staying alert.

You're asked to make a financial move quickly, without a clear or logical reason.

You're told not to speak with anyone about it.

Someone claims to be from a government agency and says you need to act immediately to protect your money.

You’re directed to contact someone from a pop-up or error message online.

Never call a number from a suspicious pop-up or email — these messages are often fake.

Always independently verify who you’re speaking to. Use company websites to find relevant contact information and never disclose financial information to any person or any institution you don’t already have a relationship with.

Talk to someone you trust, like me or a family member, before taking action on a request involving large

sums of money.

Be cautious with anyone asking for secrecy or urgency.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s OK to slow down and ask questions.

Scams like these are designed to make you panic. Taking a moment to check in with a trusted advisor can make all the difference.

t was just a few short weeks ago, after the frost of a long winter, that we saw the first signs of spring. Crocus flowers began to emerge from the ground, in the signature variety of bright colors – shades of yellow, purple, lavender, blue, cream and white. This started the cycle of beauty that we so long for each year, giving us hope and promise of a new beginning.

Next, we saw the lovely bright and cheery golden yellow and white daffodils fluttering and dancing in the breeze, and the yellow flowering forsythia shrubs and bushes which burst forth in full bloom. Everywhere we go now, we see the beautiful colors of spring; bright pink and red geraniums, too, which bring a smile, a happy memory, and warm my heart as this weekend is Mother’s Day weekend.

Many feel that because of all of its beauty, that this is the best time of the year to sell your home.

I am sure that you have heard the saying, “It is the first impression that counts the most.” It applies to home selling, too. When selling your home, it is what is on the outside that matters first. Buyers will be “judging your book by its cover.” In other words, curb appeal matters.

A National Association of Realtors survey of buyers that purchased their home last year indicated that a home with excellent curb appeal may increase its sales price by an extra 7% on average, and as much as a 14% in some cases. Wow.

Getting top dollar

First and foremost, keep your grass trimmed, neat, edged, crisp, sharp, watered and clean. Cut your grass – sell your home.

Second – green is good. Fertilize your lawn with pet-safe products of course.

Third – keep your flower beds free from all weeds.

Fourth – be sure to replenish your gardens and flower beds with fresh, brown mulch or root mulch. It lasts longer than black or red mulch, which is dyed.

Fifth – neatly trim your hedges and flowering trees.

Sixth – plant vibrant, colorful, hearty primrose and/or purple and yellow pansies in gardens, along entrance walkways, or in decorative flower pots on your front porch for a warm, inviting appeal. A variety of color is pleasing to the eyes. Think of your landscaping as the frame on the picture around your beautiful home.

Seventh – freshly paint your front door. Choose an accent color that makes a clean, bright statement such as red, black, turquoise, or yellow.

Eighth – place a decorative wreath on your front door in floral or in patriotic red, white and blue.

Ninth – proudly install and fly an American flag on your home in support of our military, and to show your love of our own United States of America.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms, mothers, mommies, mums, grandmothers, fur baby moms and all of the angel moms, too, that continue to inspire each and every one of us every day.
