granite blocks at the end of Wyllis Avenue, said Mayor Carlo DeMaria. “This work was done without the proper permits and no prior notice to city officials. Rather than building backdoors through our neighborhoods, National Grid needs to reconvene with United Steelworkers Locals 12003 and 12012-04 immediately, and reach a final agreement with new labor contracts. National Grid has stated that the path was created for an electrical contractor making improvements at substation. Since June 24, 1,250 National Grid employees across the state have been locked out by National Grid after contract negotiations failed after months of contentious bargaining. The week prior, the two unions voted to authorize a strike, but stated that they would be willing to keep working under the old contract. The company rejected the proposal and took what it described
Page 17 as a “preemptive action to prevent interruptions in service. National Grid has brought in temporary workers from out of state, often referred to by workers and labor organizers as “scabs. Controversially, the company cut off health insurance for the locked-out workers and their families on July 1, placing several with chronic or life-threatening conditions – at least one person with cancer, even – in a dangerous position as they scramble to pay for treatment without health insurance. The union has also stated that the lockout has created a number of safety hazards are less-experienced contractors and management attempt to perform dangerous and complicated jobs typically performed by experienced union workers. Negotiation sessions between National Grid and the unions are expected to resume on July 17.
