HOW TO GET AROUND In New York, public transportation is the most common method of getting around. There is no need for a car, which can be expensive. Subways and buses offer common routes throughout all five boroughs, and yellow cabs can be hailed from just about anywhere. Uber offers a quick fix for last-minute trips in the area, and car-sharing services like Cars2Go and ZipCar cater to those who want to drive. If you wish to take a trip out of the city, or if you live on Long Island, you can use the Long Island Railroad, affordable long-distance bus and rail options, or a daily car rental service. WHERE YOU’LL LIVE Many students and graduates choose to stay in New York, and there are a myriad of neighborhoods to fit their personal styles. The Bronx offers vibrant Latin and hip-hop culture. Harlem has history stemming from the Harlem Renaissance. Fancy museums and sweeping views of Central Park are highlights of upper Manhattan, while cobblestone streets filled with designer shops, hot-spot restaurants, and parks define lower Manhattan. Queens has the up-and-coming neighborhood of Astoria, and Brooklyn

make-up artistry.

FUNDING YOUR DREAMS There’s no getting around it, New York is expensive! It is important for any incoming student to prepare financially to study and live in this city. Do some research so you have a good understanding of the cost breakdown for school, housing, transportation, and living. If you plan on relocating to New York, you’ll need to set a realistic goal for savings and a plan of action to be financially stable. Most of our students recommend saving in advance to decrease the amount of debt incurred. It’s also a good idea to create a budget for yourself. MUD graduate Amanda Hess suggests, “Make a monthly budget including paying for a dorm or apartment rent. Add food, travel, and activities so you'll always have money for the necessities.” Insider tip: Though the cost of living is high, there are plenty of free and affordable activities to keep yourself

GET INSPIRED BY NYC

Nazarie, MUD graduate Few places on the planet offer as much vibrancy, activity, culture, and opportunity for up-and-coming make-up artists as New York City. MUD graduate Tamia Haddock says it best, “This place truly cultivates the artist, the creative, the individual. There is inspiration everywhere and so many communities and hubs to support the arts—from MUD to the Film Academy.” Ready to be a part of it? Bring your big dreams to the Big Apple, and get inspired by all the city has to offer.

AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO NYC: 12 TIPS FOR EXPLORING THE BEST OF THE BIG APPLE

01

To feed your inner fashion mogul go window shopping

on Madison Avenue, explore the cobblestone side streets in SoHo, or find the perfect jacket at a vintage shop.

02

Get away from the hustle and bustle by visiting Governor’s

Island in the summer to ride bikes, play on the giant playground, visit the free art galleries, and enjoy some of the best food truck cuisine in New York.

03

Eat brunch at any of the Instagram-famous hot spots

in SoHo. Afterwards, grab a cupcake at Sprinkles or a frozen s’more at Dominique Ansel Bakery.

04

Set a goal to find the city’s best ice cream at shops

like Wowfuls, New Territory, and Soft Swerve.

05

Listen to musicians play at Washington Square Park. Then

catch a show at the Comedy Cellar.

06

At the Chelsea Market, you can grab a bite to eat plus a

small gift for someone back home.

20

07

Head up to the High Line for views of the Hudson River, local

artists’ goods, and a beautifully renovated garden along the old subway line.

08

Hunt for the perfect vintage outfit or score a rare comic

book at a flea market.

09

Become part of the fashion scene by joining a team of

make-up artists at a runway show.

10

Take in the Manhattan skyline by walking over the Brooklyn

Bridge, and catch up with friends on a picnic at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

11

Mix nature and city life as you kayak the East River and enjoy

stunning views.

12

Get in the holiday spirit with the Christmas Village and ice

skating at Bryant Park.

It’s possible to spend a lifetime exploring all the colorful shops, cafés, restaurants, markets, museums, pop-up stores, and events the Big Apple offers. Whether you want to join the pulsating crowds at an electrifying concert or cozy up in a café and people-watch, New York has it all.

Get to know MUD’s Los Angeles campus

Learning in La-La Land Los Angeles has long been the heart of the entertainment industry and the birthplace of modern film. The start of Universal Studios in 1912, Paramount Studios in 1914, and Warner Brothers Entertainment in 1923 helped to shape L.A. and continues to influence film and entertainment today. It’s no wonder that twenty years ago MUD began in the very same city. Our students come to study for a variety of reasons, from cosmetic sales to weddings and entertainment, but film and television are in the backdrop of all we do.

22

HOW TO GET AROUND Although L.A. is best navigated by car, many new students arrive without a vehicle. Don’t fret! You can easily stay close to school and walk to class or use public transportation. L.A.’s Metro system is growing immensely with new

13 million people, Burbank somehow feels like a small town. The Downtown District on San Fernando Boulevard has movie theaters, boutique shops, restaurants, and nightlife. MUD’s flagship location was a car dealership almost a century ago, but today it’s a modern retail and learning space. The campus has nine remodeled classrooms, a full retail store, professional photo studio, sink room, and a learning resource center. The best view is from the street—where curious folks can peek in through the windows to see teachers doing workshops or MUD Shop employees giving free makeovers.

have a job, using their spare time to practice make-up. For those that do work, evening and weekend gigs are normally all the school schedule will allow for. After graduation, students can choose to work in a more traditional environment such as retail, freelance for film & TV, special events and weddings. Or you can do all of the above. All areas of employment are competitive, however, what really makes the difference is hard work. You should be working every day. Work might mean, being on set or behind a counter. Work might mean working on your resume and online presence, searching for jobs, or working with career services. If you are starting out in film and TV, take every job, no matter how low the pay, until your experience allows you get better jobs with bigger productions.

LEVEL I MAKE-UP ARTIST Beauty Essentials was written as an introduction to beauty make-up. These first 84-hours should be viewed as the bare minimum to learn beauty makeup. In this intensive course, students learn how to properly apply beauty make-up and understand the fundamental theory behind it.

LEVEL II MAKE-UP ARTIST After completing Level I, the student may progress into more advanced areas of make-up. At this level, students will be exposed to areas of fashion, print, film, television, and bridal make-up applications. The completion of the Level II Make-up Artist Certification allows students to transfer to one of our main campuses and bypass Beauty 101: Fundamentals of Make-up in any of our programs.

LEVEL III MAKE-UP ARTIST Once a student completes Level I and Level II, they may continue their education with an in-depth course on hairstyling and begin the process of building their professional portfolio. The completion of the Level III Make-up Artist Certification is designed to prepare students with real world experiences and a well-rounded education that prepares them for a career as a make-up artist.

THE

ART

OF

ILLUSION Why make-up artists are an essential part of movie magic Actor: Jure Henigman Photograper: Peter Giodani Make-up Artist: Vanja Djuran @ MUD Europe

Filmmaking combines different art forms to create a single illusion. Whether a film is set in the past or present, a distant location or imaginary place, its creative team must come together to bring the vision to life. Moviemaking includes a host of disciplines, from directing and acting to scenography, cinematography, costumes, dialogue, music, special effects, and more. Along with the director, cinematographer, and production designer, the make-up artist helps create the world portrayed in the film. While actors bring the screenplay to life, it is the make-up artist who supports their physical transformation from actor to character. If a script requires actors to look beautiful, make-up artists make it so. If the movie asks for ragged characters, youthful or elderly individuals, or even monsters and fantastical beings, the make-up artists work behind the scenes to craft these personas. Make-up helps audiences believe that what they see on the screen is real. 54

Movie make-up is a combination of art, technology, research, craft, and plain old hard work. It is corrective, covering flaws, pores, and wrinkles while emphasizing attractive features. It is also creative, enabling actors to inhabit almost any type of character. Make-up and hairstyles must look convincing and effortless yet be durable enough to last long hours on set. No matter the creation, movie make-up must withstand close scrutiny when magnified on screen. A movie tells a story in about two hours, but the making of it lasts many months. Scenes that follow each other might be shot days or months apart. Make-up artists are challenged to use their skills to maintain the continuity of the character, no matter how much time passes between shooting the same look. 56

MAKE-UP HELPS AUDIENCES BELIEVE THAT WHAT THEY SEE ON THE SCREEN IS REAL.

ENGAGE THE AUDIENCE EMOTIONALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY TO MAINTAIN THE ILLUSION CREATED BY THE FILM.

58

The endless possibilities in film require the make-up artist to be ready for anything with a range of tools and techniques. Beauty make-up employs cosmetics such as foundation, contour powders, lip and cheek color, and mascara to enhance or correct an actor’s features. Character make-up transforms actors with color, prosthetic appliances, contact lenses, hair pieces, and false teeth. Realistic blood, knife or bullet wounds, and other grisly effects are all in a day's work. Special make-up effects uses advanced techniques to create elaborate, realistic characters. To breathe life into imaginary creatures, monsters, and otherworldly beings, special make-up effects artists use mechanical devices, prosthetics, and computer graphics. Artists might also create convincing diseases and deformities that thrill and disgust audiences at the same time. Period films may require a combination of beauty make-up, character makeup, and special make-up effects to create authentic historical looks. Make-up artists are an essential part of any movie production. They help engage the audience emotionally and psychologically to maintain the illusion created by the film—from the realistic to the fantastical. This type of make-up artistry is often challenging and labor intensive, but playing a role in movie magic can also be incredibly rewarding. 60

Fresh Ideas and Hot New Products from MUD Cosmetics 2017 was a year of sustainability, innovation, and artistry for MUD Cosmetics. We continued to lessen our imprint on the environment by implementing refillable containers and eliminating many of our single-use compacts. We reduced our reliance on animal products by moving entirely to new high-performing synthetic fibers for our brush line. In the coming year, brow creams and a new stackable palette system will join our line, and unique original artwork will adorn our product collections.

These lashes are slightly angled towards the outer corners for creating seductive eyes.

Short flare lashes are perfect for a natural lift to the outer corners of the eyes. Flares can also be added to sparse areas to create fuller, thicker lashes.

Achieve a dramatic look with these strip lashes.

Make your eyes stand out in the crowd using these thick dramatic strip lashes.

Medium flare lashes are used to create fullness and length to the natural lash line. Adding flares to the outer corners of the eyes gives a "cat eye" effect and adds a touch of drama to the eyes.

These long thick eyelashes are all about drama. They are rich and voluminous for those who really want to make a statement.

Natural looking lash strips give the eyes subtle enhancement for everyday use or any special occasions.

107

Perfect for adding drama to any natural look, these lashes add length and fullness and can be used to create bolder eyelashes. Combine with a thick layer of mascara to really stand out.

Not just an urban landscape, New York is a stage for all the extra and ordinary individuals that form the wonderful cacophony of its dwellers. NYC feels like a set managed by the best scenographers, light technicians, stylists, and cast managers. With this mixture of unprecedented content and form, you can never expect what combination awaits you around the next corner. I was never too keen on street photography. On some level I always found it a bit boring in its esthetics. Obviously I hadn't been to New York. •

Graduate Spotlight In the 20 years Make-up Designory has been teaching students, numerous graduates have gone on to achieve prosperous careers. Meet three graduates who have taken the knowledge they gained into different thriving directions. Lora Arellano graduated from MUD in July of 2006. She has since started her own cosmetic line, Melt Cosmetics, with her business partner, Dana Bomar. Lora also has a successful career as a celebrity make-up artist, working with Rihanna, Iggy Azalea, and Serena Williams to name a few. Angel Radefeld-Wright, one of MUD’s first graduates from 1999, has built a flourishing career in the film and television industry with over 50 credits to her name, including the largely successful film, La La Land. She is currently the Department Head on Showtime’s Ray Donovan. Nicole Faulkner, who graduated in August of 2010, has quickly made a name for herself in the beauty and entertainment industries, working with Jeffree Star, Pentatonix, Def Leppard, and more. Earlier this year she was nominated for an Emmy Award, and is currently touring the world teaching master classes on her “Lipsticknick Beauty Tour.” These graduates prove that with passion and drive you can make your own mark in the world of make-up.

His makeup artistry has appeared in national and international publications like Rolling Stones Italia, Playboy, and Cosmo. You may have seen his handiwork in music videos and commercials on MTV, VH1, or HBO. If that wasn’t enough, JSterling’s stellar career also includes teaching aspiring make-up artists at MUD New York. I think that change in technology really helped me, because it forced me to adapt much faster than people who were older and more entrenched in the business than I was.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE MAKE-UP INDUSTRY? I love that we make people feel good about themselves, but I think it’s more than that. What we do for a living as make-up artists is sometimes trivialized, but I believe we move people in a specific way. It doesn’t matter if they’re a housewife, a bride, a celebrity, a model, or a musician. When people get up in the morning and get ready to leave the house—maybe they put on full war paint or just a little bit of lip gloss—they choose how the world sees them. In our roles as make-up artists, we see highprofile actors, models, and singers with no make-up and without their hair done. These are people who make a living based on how they look, and they allow us to be free). In the back was an ad for a school

even some odd little things. If you see beauty in things that most people don’t find beautiful, then that’s where your creativity and your power lies. For example, an oil spill is awful, but if you really look the iridescences caused by it are amazing. Growing up in nature was also a big inspiration. I was a bit of a loaner and I spent a lot of time by myself, so nature was almost like a friend. If you observe the world around you, you cannot help but be inspired. Now I live in New York, but I still get out of the city on a regular basis to proverbially stop and smell the roses.

WHAT CALLED YOU TO TEACH? When I first went to beauty school, not too many people were interested in what went on behind the scenes. Then this really great shift happened, and hair and make-up people became celebrities in their own right. Kevin Aucoin is a great example of this, along with Frederick Fekkai and Oribe. What really got to me were the interviews I saw with make-up artists. Not many could

spectacles of the fashion industry. These events take place in capital cities throughout Europe and give fashion designers a chance to

establish their brands and connect with customers and business partners. Again, MUD participated in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Ljubljana, Slovenia, an up-and-coming city on the world’s fashion stage. This was the fifth time a team of MUD make-up artists led by instructor Vanja Djuran provided the make-up at the MercedezBenz Fashion Week Ljubljana. The most recent event took place in October 2017 and included sixteen fashion shows featuring

recognized foreign and domestic designers. Each designer had unique requirements for the MUD team. It was a challenge to develop a strong strategy and stay versatile to execute the varied looks. One show required make-up artists, Tinka Pobalinka and Dominika Monte, to apply bald caps to twenty-eight models in a very short time. It was not a simple process. The artists used a specific procedure to apply special-effects latex and achieve a convincing look. Once the caps were on, MUD team had to create make-up that was consistent with the models skin tone to the bald caps. For another show, the MUD team created the make-up for successful mature models who were representing a designer’s clothes. The audience was delighted by the performance. It is an honor to work for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and MUD is proud to have a constant presence at an event of this caliber. • Fashion designers: Akultura, Arnoldo Battois, Cliche, Draz, Ivanman, Izadora Verlic, Milica Vukadinovic, Natasa Persuh, Peter Movrin, Sari Valencui for Andraz, Sens, Sofia Nogard, Susnyara, Tanja Zorn, D'Alpaos. In Memory of

David Langford 1960 - 2017 An inspirational make-up artist, mentor, educator, and friend that touched the lives and careers of so many young aspiring artists. His enthusiasm and love for life was contagious and brought smiles to faces of everyone he worked with. During his thirty plus years as a freelance make-up artist, David helped bring the iconic “Elvira: Mistress of the Dark” character to life, worked as a department head at Paramount, was a Senior Make-up Consultant at Walt Disney Studios, and a member of I.A.S.T.E. Local 706 - the Make-up Artists and Hairstylists Guild. David began his teaching career at Joe Blasco Makeup Training Center and spent the last seven years as an instructor for Make-up Designory. Recognized on campus for his infectious laugh and generosity to those he mentored, his memory will live on in the artists that he trained and inspired. He will be remembered and missed by all, and thought of often. From all of us in the make-up community, “We will miss you, David.”

It’s been almost two years since MUD Studio opened in Vienna. MUD Studio Vienna educates up to sixteen students at once in a private atmosphere. The classroom is on a separate level from the shop to keep it special and private. The store customers are not disturbed by students and vice versa. The students get to know make-up in a pleasant environment with the latest resources. •

Berlin seeFASHION MUD Studio Berlin’s students and graduates teamed up again with one of the most prestigious fashion and art schools in Berlin. Every year, the Department of Fashion Design at “Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin” presents their current graduate collections and design projects in a big show called SeeFASHION. For the second year in a row MUD was invited to provide the make-up and hair services at this high-profile event. SeeFASHION brings together eighty designers and forty models for a three-hour runway show. You can imagine the buzz and high-energy vibes happening backstage. For many of the MUD students, this is their first experience in a real-life work situation. It’s a dramatic change from the classroom. Everything happens so fast! Models arrive late, designers change their minds about looks, and students have to change the lipstick color at the last minute. The atmosphere at SeeFASHION can be intense. Thanks to the guidance of our senior team members, everyone pulls together to finish the task. All the hard work pays off when the students get to stand next to the runway and see their creations for the first time on such a big stage. •
