MESSAGE FROM REGINA AKOTH OMBAM, PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, STATE

DEPARTMENT FOR TRADE

I take this opportunity on behalf of the Government of Kenya to sincerely thank the Government and People of the United Republic of Tanzania for the invitation to participate in this noble annual event which seeks to strengthen our EAC regional integration agenda.

I note with appreciation the theme of the Fair ‘Pride of Tanzania’ which strives to promote made in Tanzania and captures the developmental aspirations of the host country’s industrial initiatives to promote their products within the region. As Kenya continues to strive to industrialize and achieve Vision 2030 goals, the EAC market offers the necessary impetus towards realization of this aspiration. We therefore view DITF 2025 as a platform to share and learn from each other, undertake test-marketing, promote made in Kenya products, launch new products and services as well as enhance brand and corporate image of our products and enterprises, respectively.

Intra-regional trade is now a central pillar in integrating the economies of the EAC Partner States, in an effort to create wealth and improve the lives of the people of the region mainly due to close proximity, similar tastes and preferences including cultures. It is for this reason that Kenya has been participating in this fair for over two decades which has come along way in securing a stronger position with new products and further strengthening her position in the EAC common market. This fair continues to serve an important marketing link and an excellent showcase for new and existing goods and services.

I therefore take this opportunity to welcome you all to visit the Kenya pavilion at the 49th edition of the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair that is scheduled to be held from 28th June to 13th July 2025 at Saba Saba grounds, Karume Hall to sample, appreciate and buy or order our high-

quality products on offer. This is also an important showcase for goods and services made in countries of the East African Community region and beyond.

Equally, a wide range of economic activities ranging from manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, mining and services will form the main stay of the show and will show the transition from rudimentary to more sophisticated value-added offerings.

This manifestation is particularly important to Kenya since it augments our efforts to consolidate the gains made and expand the market share for our goods and services into regional market in the spirit of good neighbourliness. Through this forum, enterprises will have an opportunity to create market linkages, build strategic alliances as well as identify partnerships with business partners from participating countries.

I wish to underscore the significance of SMEs’ contribution to their individual countries’ economies and the larger East African community. Strong policies

I congratulate the Government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania for the organization of this fair which has immensely contributed to our regional integration agenda. I, therefore, take this opportunity to urge and encourage the Kenyan business owners to take part in this event and other similar activities to strengthen our regional business relations. I further wish to encourage the business community from Tanzania to also participate in major trade fairs and exhibitions held in Kenya including the Nairobi International Trade Fair (NITF) organized annually and promote Tanzanian brands in Kenyan market to foster and expand bilateral trade.

Finally, I wish to encourage the Kenyan business community to take advantage of the opportunities availed by this forum to expand their business networks for increased trade and strengthening of regional business ties.

Thank you.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, KENYA EXPORT PROMOTION AND BRANDING AGENCY

The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) is once again coordinating Kenya’s participation in this 49th edition of Dar-es-Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) 2025 in partnership with the State Department for Trade & Enterprise Development, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Kenya is participating in the Fair, under the theme ‘Made in Kenya: From Kenya with Pride’ which resonates well with Kenya’s manufacturing agenda of offering high-value manufactured products both to the domestic and regional markets.

Kenya presents diverse offerings from key sectors of the economy such as the food and beverages (tea, milk, fruit juices), herbal & beauty care & hygiene products (household & industrial use), leather & leather related products, sugar and sugar by-products, pharmaceuticals devices, value addition machinery, commercial crafts, and services (standards, maritime, investment promotion, export promotion& branding, IT consulting & dairy) in this manifestation and hopes to interest buyers, establish distribution

networks to serve this market beyond this fair and attract investors alike into these sectors.

This manifestation will further enable our enterprises to identify export opportunities, and better understand the market dynamics which will inform the formulation of entry strategies such as market investigations into other towns in Tanzania like Dodoma, Mwanza, Moshi, Arusha, and Tanga respectively with the aim of presenting more offerings and enhancing the visibility of their brands and corporate identities, thus, fostering economic co-operation among industry captains in Kenya and Tanzania as well as within other EAC member countries.

The presence of many African countries is undoubtedly a clear indication that there is a growing need for fostering intra-African trade and enabling each country to address the production and supply challenges that have for a long time hindered the development of the export sector. This calls for Kenyan companies to position themselves to network with participants from AfCFTA member states and aggressively market their goods and services beyond EAC, and COMESA, in the spirit of embracing the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) ideals.

It is in the spirit of integrating production to markets that KEPROBA seeks to use this platform to present high-value Made in Kenya goods and services into this market to gauge the receptibility of their offerings and seek to present more in other jurisdictions within the continent owing to closer proximity, similar tastes and preferences, and cultures.

Let the outcome of this great event be a pointer to the future direction of trade in the region. I wish all the participants a successful trade fair and welcome you all to the Kenyan Pavilion to sample a variety of products on offer and share viable information and experiences with enterprises in furtherance of the economic aspirations of our two economies and the region at large.

KENYA-TANZANIA Trade Flow Analysis

May 2025

officially the Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It is bordered by Uganda to the northwest; Kenya to the northeast; the Indian Ocean to the east; Mozambique and Malawi to the south; Zambia to the southwest; and Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. According to the 2022 national census, Tanzania has a population of around 62 million (National Bureau of Statistics Tanzania).

Tanzania’s GDP growth is projected at 5.7% in 2024 and 6% 2025, driven by agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism and supported by public investments and reforms to improve the business environment. Inflation is projected to decline to 3.3% in 2024 and 3.4% in 2025, helped by stability in food and energy prices. The fiscal deficit, financed by domestic and external

borrowing, is expected to decline to 2.5% of GDP in 2023/24 and stabilize at that level in 2024/25, supported by improvements in revenue performance. The current account deficit, financed by external borrowing, is projected at 4.0% of GDP in 2024 and 4.2% in 2025, supported by merchandise exports and tourism receipts. The major downside risks to the outlook include spillovers from geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts, sluggish global growth, the narrow tax base, and climate shocks (African Development Bank).

Tanzania’s macroeconomic growth accelerated to 5.5% in 2024, promoted by expanding exports, a good agricultural season, and increased electricity supply. Higher global demand for Tanzanian goods like gold, tourism, and agricultural commodities improved the terms of trade. Tanzanian firms were able to meet additional demand thanks to improvements in

the business environment which have led to investments that increased their productive capacity. Tanzania’s current account deficit is estimated to have narrowed to 2.3% of GDP in 2024, a sustainable level in the long term given the increased levels of FDI and highly concessional finance that Tanzania attracts. This has also alleviated some tensions in foreign exchange markets caused by limited rate flexibility.

The fiscal deficit has been trending toward the regional benchmark of 3% of GDP recently despite an ambitious infrastructure agenda. Tax revenues at 13% of GDP in 2024 remain low compared to peers and needs. Public debt levels remain nevertheless contained at around half of GDP. Prudent fiscal policy combined with stringent monetary policy has kept inflation below the central bank’s 5% target (World Bank).

ESEN AFRICA

BRIEF HISTORY

Esen Africa is a Kenyan brand that was founded by Serah Njambi Kangethe in 2018. It started with importing clothes from Dubai which were mostly sold from the boot of my car/house until I opened a small store on Ngong road. In 2019, We added thrifted clothing into our collection and they were mostly sold at pop up markets around Nairobi. Soon after, my love for leather products gave birth to a leather line and the opening of a store in Westlands, Nairobi. Esen Africa was based there for a year+ then covid happened and we were forced to close down the store. This ordeal really affected the business and we had to re-strategize. Part of this included stocking our products in a few made in Kenya stores in Nairobi to maintain our visibility in the market while still participating in pop-up markets. Around this time, I made the decision to shift our focus on making all our products locally, making Esen Africa a made in Kenya brand. In 2022 we managed to open our own store in Gigiri, Nairobi and by this point we had really increased our product line, which led us to opening our own workshop in Kibera Nairobi, which we still operate from to-date.

OUR LEATHER PRODUCTS

Leather can be made from the hide of almost any animal including pigs, sheep, goat, crocodile and snakes. However, the most common hide used is that from a cow, which is what Esen Africa majorly uses. Our leather products are made from locally sourced leather and are designed inhouse.Esen Africa began producing into leather products in 2019. Kenya is among the largest producers of raw leather in Africa, making production easy and efficient. Our products come in different colors, with our best seller being Chestnut. Our designs are unique and handcrafted with bespoke workmanship. We have over 10 different products and plan is to add more designs in the near future. Our products include; Tote bags, handbags, Wallets, Toiletry bags, sunglass cases, laptop bags, sling bags and cross bags. Esen Africa leather bags are named using kikuyu words. Kikuyu is a Kenyan native language where I (the founder) comes from.
